Gnome won't start for regular user
I've got Xorg installed, and KDE. These both work fine for regular users. I decided to put Gnome on the box and play with it, and it loads fine for root. When I log in as a regular user and try to start Gnome, it comes up with an ugly desktop, a splash screen, then just an X for the mouse on the ugly desktop.
I'm assuming this must be a permissions problem, but I'm not sure what needs to be changed. I checked out the gnome and kde directories, and everything seems to be owned by root, so I know I'm missing something somewhere.
If permissions, what needs to be changed? If not, then what?
I've upgraded to gnome 2.12, it still doesn't load
As it _tries_ to load, it brings up a message box saying "gnome-settings-handler could not be started" or something to that effect, which basically means nothing can run.
I tried deleting /tmp, didn't work.
I'm getting _really_ frustrated
I dont want to go back to XFCE (I dont want to open another terminal just to eject my dvd drive ever again), and I'm getting insanely sick of KDE.. it's just un-usable..
Sorry if anyone out there likes KDE.. no offence.. but I just find it un-usable..

Safari Crash - Safari won't start for specific user
Hi all, for a specific user on the system Safari won't start, the crash report is pasted below. Safari starts up fine for the Guest account and admin accounts. The user in question has a network home folder mounted on our server using AFP - not sure this is relevant though really.
Can anyone decipher this crash report? Any clues?
Many thanks!

Safari starts up fine for the Guest account and admin accounts.
The user in question has a network home folder mounted on our server using AFP -
not sure this is relevant though really.
Very relevant, yes
Safari 4.1 & 5 appear to have a bug causing Safari to crash at startup for networked home users -
a good work-round is to disable webicons or create a local link to the file/folder, or to force Safari to store the icons locally...

GNOME won't start as a user !! but start's as root
Hello,
There's a funny problem goin on my system.
When I type xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session as root, it works fine (posting this as root).
But when I do it from user account, gnome starts and immediately quits.
I am on a custom compiled kernel. (Although the problem is the same on arch's official kernel).
What could be the problem ? I think its related to D-Bus.
Here's what xinit echoed on the ttt0 when executed as user:
http://dpaste.com/111771/
Last edited by nilesh (2009-10-25 17:35:06)Well, I've filed a bug on bugs.gnome.org, let's see what GNOME has to say for this.
I have observed something new-
If startx is run as root, the same behavior is found, but if xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session is run, it works.
What does this mean - GNOME buggy or X buggy ? any guesses ?

I'm running Vista and LR 3.2. I have multiple users accounts on the same computer (my family members). Everyone is able to use LR except one user. Whenever he trys to launch LR, he gets an error message that says:
"Lightroom - Opening Catalog: IMG_0154.JPG.lrcat"
Directly under that is the MS Windows dialog box that says "LR 64-bit has stopped working" and to look for an online solution and close the program.
I really don't want to reinstall LR again unless I can do so without losing the catalogs from all the other users. It would be best if we didn't lose the catalog from the user that can't start LR, too. It's lotsa work to redo... Help on what to do?
-Willcy-Don't have a clue what's happening, but workaround
should eb possible bu creating a ne catalog then importing original into
new. Steps required:
1. User opens their accoun on PC
2. Hold down Alt key when launching Lightroom. A dialog should open that will allow you to switch catlogs or create a new one
3. Choose Create New Catlog. Give it a name (e..g the Users name). and make sure that it is located within the Users account area on hard disk (same location as original is probably best).
4. When Lr opens go to File menu and choose Import from Catalog
5. A dialog will open. Locate the old catlog (i.e. the lrcat file) and select.
6. Hit Choose button
7. Lightroom will check integretity and contents of old catalog. A dialog will open. Make sure all folders are checked.
8. Hit Import button.
9. Close Lr when catlog import is complete.
10 Reopen Lightroom. The new catalog should open by default -
[SOLVED] GDM/Gnome won't start after update
Today after I run pacman -Suy, GDM/Gnome won't start anymore after reboot. The error message I get after GDM starts is:
Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator
Does anyone have any idea what happened and how can I recover the system?
Here is the complete log for the update:
http://bpaste.net/show/209520/
Here is the journalctl -u gdm log:

Here is tail -2000 /var/log/messages.log:
http://sprunge.us/ObWY
And here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
http://bpaste.net/show/209549/
I can't imagine any other log file that might help figure out what happened, let me know if there's anything else.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Edit: I stopped gdm, created a ~/.xinitrc and could successfully start Gnome with startx. The problem remains with GDM.
Edit: The last update solved my problem: http://sprunge.us/RKWA
Last edited by falmp (2014-04-22 20:38:20)I'm not sure my issue is really the same one, but am hoping for some guidance here if possible. Trying to start GDM gives me the same error message/screen. After tdm fails I can switch to a console,
sudo systemctl stop gdm.service
then
sudo systemctl start lightdm.service
and lightdm starts fine. However, trying to log in to gnome-session gives me the very same error as I had with GDM. I can log into XFCE just fine. Attempting to start gnome-ession via startx also gives me the error screen. Does anyone know how I can diagnose the problem? Thanks,

Premiere Elements Won't Start for a Particular User
If I try to start a new project or use an existing project then I get the message "Sorry, a serious error has occurred etc" and Elements closes.
This happens only with my main working user account (Windows XP) but not any other user accounts.
I have tried all the usual tips such as deleting the temp folder and deleting the preferences file in Docs and Settings.
I have checked the preferences folder security settings and they are the same for all users.
Any thoughts on what else I can do? I will try to write the next bit in as small a text size as I can .... I am using Elements 1.0
thanks in advance

I followed your suggestion regarding using Adobe Tech Support but others with similar problems report that Tech Support don't understand the problem and are likely to ask you to de-instal and re-install, defrag the disc
Have you uninstalled defragged, and reinstalled ? If not certainly worth doing. Install it from your problem users account. I suggest right-clicking the setup file and selecting 'Run as Administrator' - that's the Vista / W7 option - if I recall in XP you select 'Run as ...' and then select administrator.

AppV 5 HF5 packages using /appve fail for regular users on Win 7
Hello,
I've been struggling with some App-V packages that fail to start on Win 7 machines provided trough Xendesktop.
All packages in question make use of locally installed Internet Explorer 9 and /appve switch :
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" /appvve:D89030F5-436B-4A82-A104-A5E5E8089824_6C521CD6-5116-4587-B9E8-E386075F7A79
All other streamed apps can be started fine (the ones not using /appve switch)
If I run this package as a regular user I always get an error that "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and a error message in the application log:
Faulting application name: iexplore.exe, version: 9.0.8112.16599, time stamp: 0x5473964b
Faulting module name: AppVEntSubsystems32.dll, version: 5.0.3404.0, time stamp: 0x537e6b1f

Report Id: 6adc7087-a081-11e4-96bf-001dd8f22044
If I start the application on the same machine using a domain account user the app starts fine.
Internet explorer works fine for the regular users.
On a machine running Windows server 2008 R2 the same user can start the packages without any problems.
I've been looking at the permissions needed but can't seem to get to the end of this...
Has anyone seen the issue or has any clue what I can do?
Thanks! It looks like some others have had issues with the /appvve switch in Citrix environments too:
http://discussions.citrix.com/topic/348733-publishing-app-v-50-app-with-appvve-switch/
I wonder if you've approached Citrix about this? I would assume it's something about the way Citrix pass the command

IPhoto won't launch for a user
iPhoto (9.4.3) won't launch for one of the users on our iMac running OS X Lion 10.7.5
We have two user accounts both with Admin previleges. For one of the accounts, iPhoto works fine. For the other account, it just won't launch iphoto and we don't get any error message when launching it from the dock. However, when launching iPhoto from a terminal window (/Applications/iPhoto.app/Content/MacOS/iphoto) the error is:
illegal instruction: 4.
I've trashed the iphoto preference file...no joy. I've also tried launching iPhoto while holding down the option key...also no joy.
Any suggestions?I have removed everything from my user library and reinstalled InDesign. Now InDesign begins to launch, but then crashes when it gets to the 'Starting up Service Registry' line on the application screen. Any thoughts? My call to apple has yielded a 'we've done everything we can do' response.

Firefox won't install for all users in Windows 8.1; only installs for administrator
Since moving to Windows 8.1, I have been unable to install Firefox for multiple users on this laptop. Firefox installs only for the Administrator (me), and does not appear on any other user account. When I try installing from one of the other user accounts (after entering my administrator password), it simply won't install.
Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
* Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
* "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\). -
Installation requirements for regular user
Hi,
I'm building my first widget with Yahoo Widgets, Eclipse and the SAP Widget Foundation installed.
I've got my widget working on my pc and can export the widget. Data retrieval from SAP is showing in the widget.
I wonder what a regular user ( on an other pc) needs to install to use the widget? Only Yahoo widgets or more? Can he/she change the login settings?
Any help will be appreciated.
Regards,
BertHi Bert,
You should install Yahoo widget Engine,SAP widget Foundation individually.
My suggestion is you can install SAP widget foundation in one system and you can define the service provider in the same system so that it act as a server.
Then from another PC you need to install only yahoo widget engine and consume the defined services.
So this will be of client/server model....
please refer the below link for more details......I havent test the same scenario in case of firewalls...

Aero is activated on my Windows 2008 R2 server, but can only be selected by the Administrator user through RDP, for a regular user through RDP, aero themes are greyed out! The GP to allow composition is enabled.
Where is the option that blocks this? I checked the domain policies, but did not find anything.
Thanks, DominicHi,
You can enable below policy setting for allowing desktop composition for rd session.
Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment
Allow desktop composition for remote desktop sessions
On Windows 2008 R2 server, after Aero Glass remoting is enabled, any new user connecting remotely with the proper client settings will automatically get Aero Glass in the remote session.
Existing users on the server will need to manually change the theme in the remote session once by selecting the Windows 7 Aero theme in desktop personalization. Subsequent connections will automatically get the Aero theme in the remote session.
Please check below article for more detail.
Aero Glass Remoting in Windows Server 2008 R2

Hope it helps!
Thanks.

One application won't open for one user
We are doing a rollout of Macbook Pros to a group of people. We have used migration assistant for 20 computers. One application will not open for one user on each of the computers. The applicaiton will open for users that are added, but not the admin user that the application was originally installed. We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application with the same results. The one user can not log in. The permissions look right for all files.
How about clarifying some things for me? Does each machine have a different admin user? What user installed the application that won't open (you say there is only one?) How many users on each machine - one or many? How many admin users are there? How many users are Standard or Managed users? What user "can not log in?" Is this on one machine or all machines? Which is the application that won't open, where is it installed, what are the permissions for the application, what are the permissions for the folder in which it's installed?
Are these computers on a network or operating standalone or does each person in the group have their own separate machine?
From where did you migrate for these 20 computers and why did you use Migration Assistant? MA is not the correct tool for doing a multi-system configuration. This is usually done using a net-based installation from a machine running OS X Server or from an XServe or by creating a standard system DVD and installing via ASR. -
Openoffice won't start as normal user --SOLVED--
If you've installed openoffice or openoffice2 and can run:
/opt/openoffice[2]/program/soffice as *root* fine, but as a normal user, experience:
"the application cannot be started. An internal error has occured" or a similar message, then look into the permissions.
I noticed my /opt/openoffice2 directory was owned by some strange user and group # (perhaps the maintainers UID??) and not root.users as it should be. So execute:
for openoffice1 users
cd /opt/
chown -R root.users openoffice/
& for openoffice2 users
cd /opt/
chown -R root.users openoffice/
hope this helps. Forget about the DRI stuff if that wasn't it
Brice
[/code]I tried it and also got this error.
I removed the .openoffice.org2 and OpenOffice.org1.1.5 directories from my home, ran /opt/openoffice/program/soffice and it worked.
The file .openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings_Linux_x86.xml in my home directory had root ownership. It might have caused this error. :? -
[SOLVED ]Automatic Xsession starting for two users not working
Trying to have two Xsession running in the same time, started automatically after login on two consoles. When I start the second manually at tty8, it is running flawless. When trying to do the same with .xinitrc, it is completelly ignored and still talks bullshit about Xsession running for display 0.
Make me feel there is some configuration file somewhere where it should not definitelly exist which takes controll everytime but when starting Xsession manually…

Yep exactly, computer for lames, the second user is just for english-speaking, first one will be for native Czech. As soon as this will work, I will even set automatic logon with mingetty for both users.
karol wrote:
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4 -- :1 tty7
For the second user change this to
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4 -- :0 tty8
:0 instead of :1 (or you can use :2 etc.)
I think I've already tried, tried again now and still the same result.

Safari stopped opening after I had to crash-restart my computer today. It still works if I create a new user so I guess it's only related to something on my user. Deleting ~/Library/Safari and the other ~/Library/... stuff related to Safari(got rid of everything I could find with Safari in the name) hasn't worked. For the hey of it I reinstalled Safari from the latest mac update but that didn't work as I expected.
What else do I need to delete that'll totally refresh Safari into the state it's in on a newly created user?
Thanks for any help.Well I found out the update I reinstalled Safari from(the latest combo update) wasn't working because it was installing an incomplete copy of the application. My friend sent me his copy of Safari and it worked again so my issue is solved. It had to have been user-specific because Safari still worked for other users but in the process of removing my user's Safari related things I probably went too far and that's why I messed it up further. Copying his Safari into my apps folder(and fixing the accounts in its privileges) has solved my problems for that.
