Gnome3: "Disable touchpad while typing" delay

I've always used that option in Ubuntu before, but it is totally unusable in Gnome3 on my Arch test-setup, because the delay after typing before the touchpad is activated again is way to long. So when I type something and then try to move the mouse pointer or click on something, it stays frozen for about 3 seconds after typing, whereas it should be available instantly after typing without any noticeable delay.
Is there any way to configure that behavior?

Apologize for posting to an old thread. But I found a solution which seems to work. At least on my machine. I thought it may be helpful. I've never worked with the Arch wiki, so I was hoping someone can tell me how to add this to the wiki.
You can use syndaemon to add this functionality. First uncheck the option from the gnome-settings interface. Now read "man syndaemon" and change accordingly. The particular fix that I've been using is this:
syndaemon -d -k -i 0.2s
Hope this helps someone. I've added this as a script to gnome-session-properties, but I guess there must be a better way to do this (put this $HOME/.profile perhaps?).
I found this here, which may be more helpful: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Synaptics_Touchpad

  • How to enable touchpad while typing on IdeaPad U530

I want to be able to use the thouchpad while simultaneously using the keyboard, i.e be able to play games properly. If I am hitting a key I can no longer move the mouse. I cant figure out how to change that. Already spent around an hour searching the internet for a solution but none seem to have it for windows 8.1. Bummer. Anyone have any ideas? I've already gone to pc settings and turned the touchpad to the no delay setting and I've gone into the mouse settings under the control panel and turned palm tracking to minimum. All were suggestions I've found online but none have solved the issue. I just want to play Portal 2.... By the way the driver software for my touchpad is apparently called Elan, if that helps any. Thanks.

Okay guys and gals. With "newer" HP Laptops, in order for your mouse to be able to move while you are pressing a key on your keyboard is to disable "Smartsense" All you do is go to the control panel, mouse, clickpad settings tab, clickpad settings button, under "pointing" you will find "Smartsense". Click on the gear next to it to open the settings for it. Lastly, slide the slider all the way to the left until it says "off". There you go. That should do it. I searched and searched the internet for the answer for this and could not find one. So I figured it out and decided to post it.

  • L3000-N100 - Disable touchpad when typing?

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 with Windows Vista.  I want to disable the touchpad when using a USB mouse. The touchpad does not show up in the control panel under 'mouse'.  There is no button anywhere near the touchpad.  There is no function key with a mouse or touchpad symbol visible on it.  There are 4 buttons on the top right, 3 control volume, and the 4th one looks like an orange suitcase with a wrench, but it doesn't appear to do anything.  I've searched forums,  but can't find a solution.  Can anybody tell me how I can disable the touchpad to stop the cursor from jumping all over when I'm typing?  Thanks!!!

    Hi griffraser,
You should have a Synaptics touchpad.  Try going into Control Panel, Device Manager and at the top of the window, click view.  Then click "Show hidden devices".  Then click Mice and other pointing devices and see if the touchpad shows up in there. If it does, right click it and then click disable.
Do you not have an icon for the touchpad in your taskbar on the right side?
Edit:  If you don't, you should be able to go back into Control Panel and click Taskbar and Start Menu and then click Customize in the Notification area window. I always have the "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" checked, but if you don't, you can click on the "Show icon and notifications' to the right of the touchpad and the icon for the touchpad should show up in the taskbar.  It's easy  to disable it from the taskbar then.

    Dave

  • [SOLVED] Disable ps2 mouse while typing

I've seen multiple guides for disabling the touchpad while typing.  I've got an alps touchpad which still isn't recognized after trying out the 2 different alps drivers in the aur.
My problem is that I can't use synclient because the touchpad is not recognized as a synaptics device.  I can manually disable the touchpad using xinput.  How do I automatically disable it when I am typing?

The tool at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=96610 detects keyboard activity by looking at /proc/interrupts and can be used to disable or enable the touchpad.

  • The cursor jumps to wherever the pointer is while typing in text boxes.

While typing in a text box, the blinking cursor will jump to wherever the mouse pointer is and begin inserting the typing there. It happens both on external mouse and on touchpad. It's only on Firefox, I've tested IE and it's fine. Sometimes it is the ' that causes it (I read up on the "jump to find" bug), but it seems to be mostly the spacebar that sets it off. I've had it happen on various websites, blogs, emails, internal site mailboxes, seems to be everywhere. Sometimes a FF restart helps, sometimes a computer restart helps, sometimes nothing helps.
I've also had site pages jump "back" in the middle of typing in a text box as well. At first I thought I was hitting the touchpad while typing by mistake but it happens with the external mouse as well. I have the touchpad disabled while ext. mouse is used.
FF is Version 3.6.10, and I'm on laptop.
Plleeeeezzze don't tell me I have to go back to IE. ewwwww

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]<br />
    <br />
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Disable touchpad function keys not working Ideapad u410 Windows 8

    Hi there
I'm on the verge of returning my new U410 which, despite reviews indicating the contrary, has a very frustrating touchpad that the palm sensitivity adjustor does not fix.  In fact I don't think it adjusts the sensitivity one iota.
So I've read that Fn+F6 or Fn+F8 should allow me to disable it while I'm writing, but they do nothing.  I'm working in Microsoft Word, if that matters (it shouldn't though, right?).  I'm on Win8, computer is brand new and I installed the latest touchpad driver but must say it never launched or I never saw it launch (I'm not sure it should, or if it should just be in the background).
Between that and the worst wireless problems ever, not to mention that the heavier graphics card apparently does nothing to improve video performance, I am tempted to return this.  So frustrating.  Please help if you know about the touchpad though, being able to disable it would go a long way!

    hi bwrightd,
    Regarding your concern:
    1. If you have the same keyboard layout like in this picture (hotkey mode disabled in the BIOS) then you just need to press the key below to enable/disable the touchpad.
Alternatively, you can also use Touchfreeze to automatically disable the Touchpad while typing.
    2. For the wireless issue, you may wanna check this thread as other users found it helpful to resolve the issue.
    3. For the video performance, try the following:
        a. Set the power settings to high performance (Link to picture)
        b. Configure Nvidia Control Panel's "Power management mode" from Adaptive to Maximum Performance - see this guide
        c. Follow this guide on how to add an app to use with the Nvidia Optimus Technology.
    Hope this helps

  • Satellite L450D: erratic cursor while typing

    Hi first post
I have recently taken delivery of Sat L450, as part of home access for our 11year daughter.
My problem is that while typing either on or off line the cursor is erratic.
It can jump into any other line and if you don't watch it constantly, it will screw up what you have typed.
I just completed a search for drivers and noticed there are two types of topuchpad drivers, so unsure if this would solve the problem or which one. (while typing this post the cursor has jumped back to previous lines 5 times)

    Hi
Please disable the touchpad while typing using the FN + F9 key combination.
I had the same issue some years ago and didnt notice that I touched the touchpad surface accidentally while typing!
I disabled touchpad and it was the solution

  • Disable the Check Spelling While Typing feature in Stickies permanently

hello. Each time I start up Stickies, I have to manually disable the Check Spelling While Typing feature anew. Stickies don't offer a preferences panel. Would there be any other way to permanently disable this?

If you are referring to the Calendar>Edit>"Show Spelling and Grammar" pane, you may also want to check your System Preferences...>Keyboard>Text>"Correct spelling automatically" setting.

Is it possible to disable the track pad while typing?

I don't believe there is a way to do it natively.
However there is an app called BetterTouchTool which enables you to fully customize the trackpad. You could increase the sensitivities so that it doesn't activate while your typing.
    Hope this helps.

  • Check spelling while typing feature (in iCal) disables itself continuously

    Hi there,
We use the iCal regularly to do write-ups for each appointment everyday. The past month or so I've noticed that everyday that I go into iCal, I have to re-check off the "Check spelling while typing" preference. Every day, I check it and then for some reason, it goes back to "correct spelling automatically" by some sort of possible default. We've never had that problem before.
Any ideas on a fix for this?
    Thanks!

  • Satellite A100-165; while typing cursor jumps to other location

    Hi,
When i write with the keyboard sometimes the cursor jumps to another location,
Just right now it jumped to the "subject" input of the thread.
    It's pretty random where it jumps but very annoying, i am running a Toshiba satellite a100 165;
Anyone got any ideas what this could be?

    Hi
    I had the same issue
I didnt notice that I touched the touchpad surface accidently while typing.
This was the reason why the cursor jumped.
You can disable the touchpad using the key combination FN+F9
Furthermore the BIOS update would be advisable too.

  • Cursor pauses/skips while typing

    hi
i am using win 8. for last 15 days i  facing  a problem that while typing either in word  or  anywhere  the blinking line typing automatically disappears for a while and reappears and  typings remains paused durig that dissapearing
    moment.
as   i have a habit of typing while seeing  the keyboard.  so  problem arise when like  i have to  write "  i am facing the typing problem "   after  typing the  whole sentence  when i look
up at monitor there it  would be " i am facithe typoblem "
not only this i  have to rename a folder  with name " hollywood movies"  some times it got renamed as "holly"  ror " hollywoo"  or '"hol"   like this  i got the right name after a
lot of try.  as  you can see while cursor pauses it automatically saves the name  i.e. it works like a left click while pausing.
another problem arise  when  like  if i selec some file with left click and waiting for a moment  when cursor automtically pauses it deselects the  file  like nothing has been selected.
pls suggest the solution for thid problem as soon as possible.

pls suggest the solution for thid problem as soon as possible.
If this is on a laptop with a Touchpad under the keyboard you should try to find a way to conveniently toggle off your Touchpad while you are typing.  Otherwise disable the Touchpad completely and get a real mouse which can not be affected by the motion
of your hands while you type.
