GNOME3 Output Volume Cap

In the Sound Settings, Output volume bar has a cap bar at 100%, is there a way to set this as the max volume on the sound panel applet and keyboard hotkeys? Right now if I max out the volume via panel or with keyboard it becomes distorted (since it's at a level like ~150%)
To be clear, I when I max out the volume on the sound panel app, or via keyboard hotkey, I want it to stop at the 100% line indicated in Sound Settings. If I want to go over 100% I have to manually increase it from the sound settings. This is how I'm used to it working in the past.

Just thought I'd update that I still have the same issue with sound clipping in gnome-control-center 3.0.1.1-1
Is this still occurring for anyone else?
EDIT: I should note I am no longer using the testing repo since GNOME3 hit extra, should a mod like to move the thread.

  • What determines the installation of a volume cap of 83% on my iPhone?

    european iPhones have a lower line-output volume than US iPhones. they're simply not as loud as they "should" be when i'm listening with my headphones. this restriction is bound to EU because of some laws i don't really know a lot about (google helps).
    by jailbreaking and modifying a certain file in the iOS, you can turn it up to 100% (or higher), and by entering this certain file (over iFile) there are a lot of abbreviations like DK, D, HN, F .. and so on, which are obvious european countries and all of them have this number of 0,82999999999999996 which stands for 0,83% of 1, so 83% from the normal 100% volume. when you change them all to 1 and reboot the iPhone, the volume output is much higher, the bass is better and it's simply how it should be and how i can imagine Apple wants the iPhones and the volume to be. it's easy, but i don't want to have my iPhone
    jailbroken .. i want to accomplish this by not jailbreaking.
    so i thougt a little bit about it and from my point of view there are just few possibilities:
    to clarify, i'm from austria and i bought a carrier free iPhone 4, it's never been locked, direct from Apple.
    1. iTunes knows where I am when activating the iPhone (hence being in the US = no cap) .. but .. what if I am abroad, let's say in Germany, and I have to reset and reactivate my iPhone .. it shouldn't be set then to the lower volume limit.
    so my second guess was..
    2. the limit is set by the SIM-card which activates the iPhone (US SIM-card = no cap) .. but .. what if I am abroad and have to reset an activate my iPhone  ... dadada.. same story.
    3. the limit is set by my iTunes account, third and to me the most plausible way, since it's not limited to where you are and what you do, and it's the only thing which is ment to persist (one iTunes account for life, but more than one iPhone or SIM-card..)
    4. (and for me the worst scenario) would be, that Apple is making different iPhones for different markets, but that's something i cannot imaging since it would be too complicated and to much work to do. almost all things at Apple and especially when we talk about the iPhone is automated. an example is that it shows you VPN or carrier settings to define only if your phone is locked, or for example it only shows you the option to use it as a mobile hotspot or make use of visual voicemail both only if your carrier supports these options.
    i know this because i work for two carriers here in austria, 3 and Orange, and i know a lot about these things. the same is with replacements: when you send an iPhone to be repaired and they return it, i often got back an unlocked iPhone and was wondering myself just like the customer was wondering .. but after 2, or 3 days it locked itself (it happened twice myself with my private iphone, one 3GS and an iPhone 4!), so my assumption is, that Apple simply produces iPhones and a lot of things are managed afterwards, over the air or over iTunes when first time connecting to it.
    also i cannot imagine, that for example if i'm from the US and i loose my iPhone in Germany, and i want to buy a new one there because i need it for my business, that i'm bound to this volume cap also if i'm not living there and return one week later to the US.
    so a lot of assumptions there, does anybody know exactly what defines it and what's required to "trick" the iPhone or iTunes into not setting this 83% volume limit cap except traveling to the US and buying an iPhone there??

  • 1.1 update = Horrible Output Volume

    Anyone else experiencing a MAJOR loss of output volume after the 1.1 software "update" as of Tuesday morning? Even with my volume set without a maximum volume limit, I suddenly have to turn my receiver WAY UP at the exact same settings as before the 1.1 update when using my ipod with an external audio source.
    Any ideas???

    Yeah, so I understand. However, the performance has definitely changed since the last software update, despite this sound limitation, which is pathetic.
    Now, I like to wear my ipod when mowing the lawn, amongst other activities - that's now not feasible because the mower drowns it out. In fact, passing cars in the street render the sound unlistenable on many quiet songs because of the sound cap.
    I hope there's going to be a fix for this somewhere out there because it's driving me barmy. Come on tech wizards, help us poor non-techie folk out. I only want to listen to AC/DC in the way they were meant to. i.e. LOUD!!!

  • Eu volume cap on dock line out

    This may have been answered before, but does anybody know for sure if the eu volume cap applies to the line out of the dock aswell as the headphone out?

    Cheers Jeff,
    I have the older 60gb iPod, but I don't believe goPod works with the latest firmware either. I have used goPod to try and uncap my iPod and although it says that it has uncapped, I noticed no difference in volume output. I even hooked my iPod up to my PC, then ran it through SoundForge to test the levels capped and uncapped and the results were identical.

  • IPod recall: US iPod sent off in the UK - Volume capped upon return?

    As the subject says, my iPod was purchased in the US and I am based in the UK and as I understand it if I send it off to be repaired I won't be getting the same one back so does that mean I'll be getting an EU volume capped one? Cus that would be sucky!

    https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa?view=overview
    Based on this link, Apple doesn't send anything automatically without it being requested.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/
    I can't find a phone number that relates to this directly, but you can try calling AppleCare to determine where to contact. If you didn't make a copy of the return info with the iPod's serial number at a minimum, you will probably have a hard time running this down.

  • Output volume on my MacBook Pro is not working

    My output volume on my MacBook Pro is not working. When I go to "Settings", then "Sounds", then "Output", I can not slide the volume bar at all, or change it in the menu bar?

  • Increasing Output Volume?

    Hello all,
    I have a 15" macbook pro that I purchased over the summer. I've noticed that my volume doesn't go nearly as high as my friend's macbook pro, and he has an 13" model that is older than mine. Is there any way I can increase my maximum output volume? I have already adjusted my sound settings in system preferences, but there is nothing to make it louder. Is there something I'm missing here?
    Thanks

    If it's iTunes you're listening to, make sure the volume slider in the iTunes window is turned up all the way, then use the master volume controls (the F10, F11 and F12 keys) to regulate the volume. If the iTunes slider isn't up all the way, it limits the maximum volume that you can get by turning the master volume up. At least this has been my experience.

  • Output volume

    I have to reset  the output volume in my System Preference whenever I restart my computer because it reverts back to some default setting whenever I restart. How do I change this setting?

    Thanks, your message did help and gave me a little bit more knowledge about the world of sound which is becoming more complex than I ever imagined.
    But I want more volume.....
    I have tried using the volume enhancer preset (hiFi) from the inserts of the output track and this has increased my volume, but my RMS is still only getting to around -14.
    Any ideas on how to get more volume anyone?
    And by the way, am I doing the right thing by using the output track to control my final volume output? I have found that the master volume fader on my TASCAM-428 will also define the final level of my mp3 bounces, and that they are basically interchangeable in terms of controlling output levels.
    e.g. if i have everything all the way up and then pump my master volume fader on the Tascam to full, my file will distort.
    Thanks in advance (hopefully).

  • Volume capped on ipod 5g in europe?

    All personal music players manufactured for sale in Europe have a volume cap applied. It's European law.
    You can get goPod here. It works.

  • Sound Output Volume Preference won't stick in newly reinstalled 10.6.8.

    I recently re-installed OS 10.6.8 (from the retail Snow Leopard Install DVD, followed by the 10.6.8 Combo Updater) to my 2006 iMac (version 6.1) 24". Ever since, whenever I re-boot, the output volume of the internal speakers is set to a reduced level. When I bring it up to the level I like - that's fine, but only for as long as the session. If I re-boot, the level is once again dropped down to the reduced level.
    I've reset the output level using the keyboard keys, and also in the System Preferences - nothing seems to stick. I've even plugged in a pair of headphones and set the output volume to be the same as my preferred speaker level, but still, nothing sticks.
    I can't find a preference file to delete that is specifically for Sound Preferences. I've used Cocktail to search for a corrupted preference file, but that finds nothing as well.
    How can I regain control of my volume setting so that it will survive a re-boot?

    I should have added that resetting the P-Ram didn't help, neither did an SMC Reset.

  • Audio output volume setting

    I'm trying this for the first time. I want to be able to record voice and instruments through a mic. When I open a new track, the output volume slider is 'greyed out", and I can't adjust it. I've maxed every other volume control I can find, but the output is muted when I play it back. Anyone else had this problem?

    I want to be able to record voice and instruments through a mic.
    if it's a regular mic plugged into the computer:

    the output volume slider is 'greyed out"
    what "output" slider are you talking about?

  • Applescript output volume consistently "missing value"

    It seems that the output volume returned by the "get volume settings" applescript call is consistently the "missing value".  Setting the output volume to a different value "works" -- that is, the effective volume is set to the value I specify -- but the value returned by applescript is still "missing value".
    For example, the following script
    display dialog "output volume = " & (get output volume of (get volume settings))
    set volume output volume 50
    display dialog "output volume = " & (get output volume of (get volume settings))
    gives me this dialog both times
    What's up with that?
    This is on Mavericks 10.9.0

    Yes, I discovered much the same thing.  If I have my system/default output device set to my headset, then I get the behavior I described.
    However, I also find that while the output device is "missing value" the other values, including muted, have proper values.
    There is also no way to set the output device via Applescript (except by the distasteful method of poking they System Preferences GUI settings).  So there is no proper way of really controlling sound output via applescript.
    But thanks for the prompt response.  If only the Applescript documentation were complete in this respect (unless I missed it somehow).

  • I cannot access my output volume!!

    When i go to system prefrences the whole output volume is gray, it only works with speakers. please help im very frustrated!  Mac.OS.X version 10.6.8 it stopped working after i went on a plane ride and listened to music though headphones for 2 hours...please help and tell me how to fix it

  • Microphone.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA) Causes output volume to decrease

    I would like to record sound from the microphone in AIR.
    This is working, except that while recording, AIR reduces the volume of all playing sounds.
    This volume reduction is triggered by
    microphone.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA, myFunction);
    It should be noted that myFunction() can be completely empty. The output volume is still reduced.
    How to reproduce:
    // Start playing a sound
    var url:String = "100Hz_44100Hz_16bit_30sec.mp3";
    var urlRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
    var isound:Sound = new Sound();
    isound.load(urlRequest);
    isound.play();
    // Set up the microphone
    var microphone = Microphone.getMicrophone();
    microphone.setUseEchoSuppression(false); // I have tried both ways.
    microphone.setLoopBack(false); // I have tried both ways.
    microphone.rate = 44;
    // Start recording
    microphone.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA, gotMicData);
    // The volume of 'isound' will now be reduced until the microphone listener is removed.
    // Once the listener is removed, the volume of 'isound' returns to normal.
    I do NOT want the volume of other playing sounds to be reduced while recording. How might I do this?
    Note: I am using Windows 7.

    I believe reducing volume on mic record is a Windows 7 feature and nothing to do with Air.
    To disable this, take the following steps:
    Click Windows button
    Choose Control Panel
    Choose "Hardware and Sound"
    Choose "Manage audio devices" under the "Sound" heading
    Goto the "Communications" tab
    Set "When windows detects communications activity" to "Do Nothing"
    Even though that setting says it's supposed to adjust volume when placing telephone calls using you computer, I have had it reduce volume in some programs when i activate the microphone.
    Let me know if that works for you.
    Edit:  Heh, was reading some other recent forum posts to see if there was anything else I could help with.  The thread "2 flash instances & Windows 7" currently a few below this one on the front page mentions this Windows 7 Feature, although it's causing a different issue for him.

  • Output Volume for recording

    I'm having trouble getting enough volume in headphones while recording. I have the output volume on my interface (M-Audio Fasttrack pro) all the way up, but when I adjust the mix on the interface to hear a good mix of both recorded tracks, and what is being recorded, the volume is too low to hear anything. The outputs on Logic are set as high as possible without clipping. I've even tried a separate headphone amp and its not enough. Its not like I'm hard of hearing, either... :. any suggestions?

    You need a dedicated mixing console to blend the incoming overdubs with Logic's playback.
    What model? What price? You decide this.
