Going Abroad

Hi guys, I'm going on holiday soon and planning to take my iPhone 3G with me. But I'm little confused. In the setting there's an option for Data Roming which says use to avoid additional charges, while travelling! Now what does this mean? The one thing I want to do is not use internet when i'm abroad.
Any suggestions?

Just got back from multiple countries and it works very well. I set dat roaming on when I wanted to get email and/or internet access turn it off if you don't want to use either. This allows you to only use phone service. You have to pay for international phone coverage from ATT and pay for data service. I paid for the 50 mb plan and it was more than adequate for limited internet and email use.
Good have good trip

  • Going Abroad - Question About Voltage Converter Stuff

Hello, so I am going abroad for a few months (the Netherlands), and I have a question about voltage converter stuff. All of the voltage converters I can find say powers heat-producing appliances rated 500-1600 and converts foreign voltage of 220-240 volts to U.S. voltage 110-120. However, it says not to use on appliances under 500 watts such as computers. So first, off does anyone know how many watts an ibook g4 14" puts off. Secondly, I read that laptops have a dual adapter and that they can work on the 220-240 volts converter. Does anyone have any ideas about these issues; any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Brandon,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Your iBook's power adapter is rated for 100-240v. All you need is an adapter for the plug so it will fit in a European outlet. You can find them at travel stores or online for a few dollars.

  • What happens if Skype TG number goes abroad

Hi guys, I can not find the anywhere. I am in UK and can call my friends STG (mobile) number in Poland without problems with correct charges. Question: If my friend will travel abroad can I still reach him on this phone and how much it costs? Thank you!

Hi there, einarparker!Welcome to the Skype Community! The cost to call your friend, who normally is reached in Poland, will depend on the destination he travels to, how he's going to receive the call and, depending on the decisions made, what's available in both ends.
Is your friend roaming? It may be one of the methods that will not cost you additional charges than you already pay, but it will cost him some more from roaming. If your friend pursues this, ensure he understands the roaming charges.
Is your friend going to get a foreign number? Check which country he is visiting. Then, you should check the rate and available subscription for that country. If you're willing to call that country, go ahead and refill with Skype Credit or subscribe to a subscription that enables calling to that country. You can check rates here. With this, you just have to add an additional number to dial and reach his foreign number. I hope this satisfactorily answers your question.
If you have another question, let us know!

  • Going abroad with Iphone4

I am going to Italy on monday and I want to use my phone4 however not come home to a nasty bill. I still want to be able to receive and send texts but that is all (if this means I also have to receive phone calls then so be it). I want all my internet/wifi etc. off so I am not charged.
    What is recommended?

So if all I want is to send texts I can leave airplane and wifi turned off? I do not need Internet or Imessages.
If you plan to use iMessages, you will need a data connection, either wifi or cellular.  So you could avoid roaming charges by turning on Airplane mode, then enabling wifi only and just use free wifi hot spots.
If you wish to send SMS text messages, you will have to pay for roaming - SMS messaging uses the cell phone voice channel, not the data channel.  Depedning on your carrier and your plan, and where you are, text-only roaming may be inexpensive or it may be very expensive.  You really need to ask your carrier about that sort of thing.

  • When going abroad can I use my inclusive minutes and texts or will I be charged?

Do I need to buy roaming add on?

That will depend on where you are going and your EE plan type.
If you are on an EE Extra plan than calls and texts whilst roaming anywhere within the EU are included in your plan.
If you are on a standard EE or or are travelling outside the EU then no sorry, calls and texts are not included.

Now the tel is longer than 2 years on contract, so i should be abl;e to do it easily,  Please let me know Thanks

  • Skype Number (#) - Receiving Calls Abroad

    Hi,
I live in NYC and bought a NYC #.
I'm traveling to Morocco soon and I can't seem to quite figure out whether I will be able to have people contact me on the NYC Skype Number I bought.
Basically, I am hoping that people in NYC that wish to call me when I'm in Morocco will be able to do so, and only pay the local NYC rates (i.e., they won't be surprised when their Verizon bill says they called Africa and not NYC when they were dialing a 347 #).
    Any advice?
    Thanks!!
    Danny

    1. I am going abroad and plan on buying a skype number. Do i need to have wi-fi access to be able to receive a call from a non skype user ( or come to that, a skype user)
assuming you have Skype on your smartphone, you do unless you want to incur huge roaming data charges from your cell carrier -- the same applies for outgoing Skype calls and Skype calls to landlines/mobiles
for Skype on other platforms, you need some sort of connection to the internet (WiFi, cablemodem, DSL, etc.)

    2. If they are calling me from a mobile  ( non skype) and have free minutes left on their calling plan am i correct in thinking that they wont have to pay for the call ( as long as they are in the same country to which i have registered my skype number)
that is correct, but in reality they need to be close enough that the call to your Skype Number is a 'local' call (I presume you are in North America) -- being in the same country is not necessarily enough

  • Connecting From Abroad

Will I be able to connect to my iMac  when going abroad if I will live it on Sleep Mode?
    Thanks,
    Amnon

Before you leave, you need to test this from a neighbors, family members house, or other WiFi hotspot to make sure it does what you want.
Wake on Network Access ONLY works if you can send a Wake-On-LAN packet to the Mac, and that needs to be done from the same subnet.
There are routers that will setup a Sleep-Proxy for ports that were active before the Mac goes to sleep. If something attempts to connect to that port while the Mac is asleep, the router will send the needed Walk-On-LAN packet and then forward the message to the now awake Mac.
The Apple Airport Extreme WiFi base station routers will provide the Sleep-Proxy service.  You need to check the specs of other routers to see if they also provide this service.
    That is part 1.
Part 2.  You also need to make sure you Mac is able to actuallly talk to you remotely.  And you need test this from a nearby outside location as well.
    iCloud Back-to-My-Mac is one option.
TeamViewer.com is another free for personal use option (along with LogMeIn.com, and others).
Another approach is to forward ports in your router to your Mac that allows screen sharing (5900) and file sharing (548) <http://PortForward.com>.  If using this approach, also get a free dynamic DNS name and run a dynamic DNS updating utility on the home Mac.  <http://No-IP.com> or <DynDNS.org>

  • Using my Blackberry Abroad by WIFI only... HELP!

I've been researching this topic and speaking to people from Vodafone customer services and I seem to be getting different answers!
I'm going abroad for 6 month and want to use my Blackberry for WIFI only to avoid any overseas charges. I was planning on turning the mobile network off - this means I won't be able to send/recieve calls, SMS etc. right? Then I was going to leave data services on but off whilst roaming and turn on the WIFI. I did this and tested it out at home and it connected fine. However, I've been told that I need to turn data services off otherwise I will incur charges from GPRS, do they mean data services off and off whilst roaming? Because I did this and tried to connect via WIFI and it didn't work, or do they just mean turn data services off whilst roaming?!

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro Screen Blinks

Hello, the evening before going abroad, my MBP screen began to blink on and off to a black screen before returning to a temporary normal state. I have tried a PRAM reset and noticed that the boot screen runs fine with no flicker, but both the login and desktop screens blink? The battery is due for replacing soon, but I don't see the this having any impact on the screen blinking? I have searched for an appropriate EFI update but have not seen one
Has anyone come across this before on the 13"? Or has anyone got suggestions to resolve this issue?
    Many Thanks in Advance!!!

I have the same problem with my late 2011 MBP 15
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/t/160161/apples-2011-macbook-pro-lineup-suffering -from-sporadic-gpu-failures
It seems to be a common problem, and a pretty expensive one to fix. I am hoping to be able to use the consumer rights we have in Sweden to get it fixed for free.

  • Family leaving in less than a week for Cancun - What do I do for older teens who still want to text?

    All,
I have nowhere else to go but this forum.  I have called Verizon asked them about upgrading to the Global Plan (which I plan on getting) but no one can seem to answer the one question I need answered.  Is there any way to avoid the 50 cent charge per text to send and the 5 cent charge per text to receive?  I do not want to block their text messages as I was hoping to be able to text them down there so we could stay connected.  We have approximately 22 family members going 12 of which are older teenagers and some in early 20s. I am trying to avoid coming home to a $1000 dollar bill from Verizon but still allowing our kids to have fun texting their friends in the US.
As large as Verizon is, I am absolutely shocked that there is no international type of service you can purchase.  Or for that matter someone who actually knows what they are talking about when it comes to texting, calling, snap chatting, twittering overseas. Me, my sister and my sister in law have all called Verizon and each were told three different things!
I know they said we should be on Wi-Fi as much as possible but at the same time I was told most resorts in Cancun will make you pay for Wi-Fi!  I feel like I am banging my head up against the wall.
All the teenagers have at least an IPhone 4 or above and all are smart phones. Can someone please tell me if there is an APP or something that I am not aware of that can be used for these teenagers while we are in Cancun?
Any help or any guidance as to what I need to do would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind I am a little bit computer savvy, but I am not phone savvy at all.  So the more it is spelled out, step by step on what we need to do, the better I will be able to understand it.
    Thank you for your time
    Lotton

Unfortunately, when you go on vacation, you have expenses. If you increase the things you want to do while on vacation, that will increase your expenses. That would include using your smartphones while abroad. It used to be when going abroad, keeping in touch with home was an expensive proposition. It still is, except it is NOW more convenient. If you want to do so, it is going to cost you.
You say you are shocked Verizon does not have some sort of "international type of service" while in the previous paragraph you were looking for ways to avoid paying the charges Verizon has for just such a service. Verizon DOES have an "international type of service", it appears you are simply not happy with the price of such a service.
Use the interactive trip planner. The prices you previously stated are the prices Verizon has for the service you want. Those with 4G LTE phones may be able to get cheaper service simply by purchasing a local SIM card when you arrive at your location. Of course, that would mean having a local number in Mexico and the people from home would not be able to contact you unless you were to give them the new number. Those with only an iPhone 4, unfortunately, would not be able to do so as those have no SIM card to change. Those with an iPhone 4S, could call Verizon to have their phones unlocked and then be able to switch SIM cards for cheaper service. Those with 4G LTE phones should just be able to switch the SIM card as they are already unlocked for such a switch.
