Going back in tutorial renders unanswered question slides void

Hi, I have looked through the last few months of questions and don't see exactly my issue.
I have a Captivate 4 project that is linear and has questions (no scores reported to LMS) throughout to reinforce learning.
When a learner gets to a quiz item in the series and wants to jump back to an earlier content slide (using TOC or back arrow on Nav bar--I don't have back arrow on Question slide itself.) they can't return to the question and take it. The question appears to be locked up and they get the error message below. This is a question they never tried.
I don't put a back button on the question because I don't like to encourage that, but I do have on the Quiz settings to "Allow backward movement". If that will fix the problem, then I'll add that button. Just wondering if there is another setting I can change.
The question settings are:

Yes, I had to do something, so I changed the number of attempts to unlimited. That did fix the problem. Guess if we aren't scoring the items, we need them guess as many times as they like. This automatically resets the question for reentry from anyplace.
Thanks.

  • Bring to front/back and rollover images on Question slides

    Hi All-
My feedback captions show through revealing the content underneath.  There is not an option to make them opaque.  Also, Captivate allows me to insert a rollover caption on a Question Slide (as opposed to a button which it does not allow) but the rollover doesn't work.  Suggestions? Please see me pdf attached.
    Thank you!
    Rita

All objects that are default to question slides (no separate timeline visible) are on top of the other objects. That has not changed.
I found some tweaking possibilities for shapes but that first rule is still valid: http://blog.lilybiri.com/want-a-button-on-question-slide-in-captivate

  • Cycle back to unanswered questions

I am using Captivate 4. I have created a quiz consisting of a few random question slides that take questions out of the same pool of even more questions. I have allowed users to skip questions till the end of the quiz. When they reach the end, I would like the quiz to cycle back to the first unanswered question without the result slide appearing, of course. Then, again, at the end of the quiz, cycle back again until all question are answered, then we can see the results page. I tried using advanced actions and particularly the cpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions system variable which I added to a "On slide enter" function of a blank slide before the results page so it can check if all questions have been answered, then proceed to the next slide which is the results page, a thing that for some reason it doesn't do. On the other side, if not all questions have been answered how can I track the first unanswered question in the quiz so I can send the playback there? Someone should have come across this scenario, I hope.
Also, I would like to ask of there is a way to customize the review questions proccess and instead of showing each question one at a time,  to list all questions at once with the correct answer and the answer the user chose.
    Thanks in advance.

This is why I put the bank slides set at a half-second each between each question slide. You can set an advanced action upon entrance of these slides. So my advanced action looks at the variable for the next slide and checks to see if the value is > 0. If it is, it jumps to the following slide (which is another blank slide and that one executes another version of the same command. In terms of the Submit button, what I meant to say is that I set the same (separate) advanced action no matter if the user gets the question right or wrong. This one changes the value of the variable associated with the slide from 0 to 1 and then advances to the next slide.
So in a 3-question quiz, it would look like this...
    Blank -> Slide 1 -> Blank -> Slide 2 ->
Slide 2 as the second-to-last question would have it own advanced action upon exit that looks to see if either slide has a value  > 0. If both are > 0, it jumps to the final question. If either has a value of 0, it jumps to slide that tells the user he or she has unanswered questions and gives them the opportunity to go back.
Once the user goes back, the blank slides SHOULD cycle past all completed slides (since they have a value > 0) and stop only on the uncompleted slides.
I am still working out the final details. And once I get them working this way, I would like to see if I could do it with a more elegant plan, using fewer variables and actions. But the basics are working for me right now.

  • How do I get my captivate lesson to back up through branching and Questions?

I have a course of 60 lesson slides with question slides appearing throughout the lesson. It also uses branching. Our legal department wants the user to be able to back up through the entire lesson but I have encountered the following problems:
    - When I use the skin to create a navigation bar the back up buttons won't follow the branched section the user followed but instead simply back up to the previous slide number.
    - When I created my own back up bottons, which can be set to jump to the branched slides, I discovered that I can't add them to the question slides.
    - When I tried a combination of my own buttons for the lesson slides and the back button, that is an option within the question slide properties, I discovered that once the user clicks this back up button on the question slide (and then comes forward to that question slide again) he/she is stuck and can't proceed past the question slide. The slide remembers the previous question response (the radio button selected previously is still black) and not even the skip button will allow the user to advance.
I'm hoping someone else has encountered this type of problem and can help me with a solution. I currently have both captivate 3.0 and 4.0.
Any help at all would be appreciated a lot.
    Kevin Martin

    Here's something to try...
Remove the skin so users must use the buttons you add, which will work with the branching. Add a menu to the project and strategically pick the slides that are included in the drop-down. I'm pretty sure you could have the menu go to quiz slides. I use lesson dividers as the options in the menu so users can go to the beginning of a section.
I will warn you that many folks have experienced quiz slides locking up if the user goes backwards through the module at any time. When they get to any quiz slide, there will be a caption that says "You did not answer the question completely" and the user cannot continue.
To avoid this glitch, I re-created quiz slides from scratch using click boxes and text entry boxes. This gives you a little more control over things, but you can't replicate every type of quiz question CP has.
Hope this helps...I'm no expert, but I've dealt with the same issues. Good luck!

  • Matching Question Slides

    Help
I am creating a matching questions slide with 6 selections.
Everytime I try to drag the last selection a box (similar to the
    submit box) appears.

Not enough information, my friend, though I appreciate the
offer of a beer. What might be "similar to the submit box"? Does it
have text on it? What does it say? Where does it appear? - in the
air above the monitor? - in the leaves in a teacup? Okay, I'm
really just kidding, as you can tell ... but you will have to throw
us a bone and try to better describe your problem.
Based on what you said here, the only thing that comes to
mind is to go back and edit the "Matching" question slide to make
sure you have at least one match on the right side for each on the
left side. Not two, not zero, just a single one for each.
P.S. Welcome to the Captivate User Community!! I like your
screen name. Is your real name Icarus? Just wondered...

If you are absolutely positively sure that the password you are typing in is your Apple ID password, I would try once more to enter the password. Be real careful as you type and make sure that Autocorrect is not changing what you are typing.
If no luck try to proceed without entering the password. If you can get the iPad functional go into
Settings > ITunes and App Store and log in there.
If you can log into to your Apple ID there you will also need to go to
Settings > Messages > Send and Receive and enter or check the email at which you want to receive messages,
    Also
Settings > FaceTime > check or enter the email address you want to be reached by FaceTime.

  • Captivate 5 - Move to non-quiz slide sets remaining unanswered questions as skipped

I have a captivate 5 project where all of the first slides are general content prior to the quiz questions at the end.
Just before the quiz, I have a slide that summarizes all the answers. Each quiz question is given 4 attempts to
answer them correctly. If tester exceeds 4 attempts, I do a jump to the slide that is a summary (ahead of the
question slides). When the test is stepped into, it correctly keeps the questions that were answered but then
has set all questions after the jump back slide to 'skipped'.
    Any way around this?
    Thanx.

Continue button on the Score slide will execute the actions you specify in Quiz, Preferences for Pass/Fail. Question Question Slides in Captivate - Captivate blog has more details on functionality of question/score slides.
If you are on CP6 or later, you can add shape buttons on question/score slide: Buttons on Question/Score Slides in Captivate 6? - Captivate blog  has some more details about that feature.

  • Going back to a completed question

    Hi,
I have a Captivate 8 project where there are several sections with review questions at the end of each section. I am using the table of contents to allow users to move around the whole project, and have enabled the move backwards option on the quiz. Submit is the only button I am showing on the quiz page.
The problem is that if someone goes backwards via the TOC to an earlier section, and moves forward throught the section into the following review questions, the question has already been answered, and they cannot move on (they have to use TOC to get off the question slide)
Is there any way to use actions to show a button to move forward if the question is already answered, or to just move to the next slide somehow?
Alternatively, (since I don't have my review questions on the TOC) is there a way to hide the "review" button if the associated review questions have been completed.
I've dug around in the advanced actions, but can't see any built-in variables which seem to identify if the question has been answered or not. Is the only solution to create custom variables as well to hold that information?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Normally you should provide the Next button to be able to move, but you only kept the Submit button.
There is no system quizzing variable that stores if a question is answered, bit logical since CP should have to create as many of those variables as there are questions. There is a system variable for attempts, but only on Quiz level and same for Review mode. The only solution would be indeed to store the status of each slide in a user variable, check that variable and show a shape button if the question is answered.
Buttons on Question/Score Slides in Captivate 6? - Captivate blog
I don't understand the sentence about the 'review', maybe a terminology problem. Review for me is the status that question slides get only when the Review button on the Score slide is clicked: correct answer and given answers will appear on the question slides. AFAIK there is not a possibility to do this with the TOC.

  • Captivate 8 Retake Quiz button - back to the wrong question slide

    Hi
I still haven't fixed my retake quiz button problem. I have a project with several non-graded practice questions (hot spot, drag n drop, 2 multiple choice/multiple answer) followed by 9 "real" test questions. I want the students to go back to the "real" test questions when they click the retake quiz button. Now, the retake quiz button takes me back to the first multiple choice question in the practice section - not the first "real" test question.
In Advanced Interactions for the first multiple choice question (and the 2nd as well), I see that nothing is listed in Include in Quiz col and Report Answers = NO. But an entry appears in Objective ID and Interaction ID. I can't see this ID information anywhere in the QUIZ tab - I'm wondering if this is what's driving the retake quiz button to this slide.
    Attempted Fix:
I saw Lilybiri's answer to "Captivate 8 Retake Quiz" entry. This sounded like the perfect solution to my problem. So I created a conditional Advanced Action:
If cpQuizInfoAttempts is greater than 1    Jump to (1st "real" test slide #)    Else Continue
On the 1st "real" test slide I put this conditional action On Enter.
It didn't work. Please help me determine what I'm doing wrong and how to fix this retake quiz problem. MANY MANY THANKS!!! I'm getting desperate!
    Smiles
    Susann

You must have read my answer wrongly. Condition is OK, but you have to trigger it On Enter for the first practice question, not on the first real question slide. Since the Retake button will take the user to that first practice question slide, that action will be evaluated and the jump to the first real question slide will occur. Supposed is here that all practice slides are before all question slides.

Hi - My sons ipod touch keeps coming up with three security questions when trying to conect to apple store. We try to answer or set up but it just goes back to the begining and asks again . can anyone help ?

If you get an error that says can't backup, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location and thry again. again. You can find the location of the backup file here:

  • Question slide then back then stuck

This is a pretty simple problem to explain:
If you go to a question slide, then go back, you cannot go
forward again to the question slide. Pressing forward on the slide
right before the question slide that you've already seen does
    absolutely nothing.
What's the deal? Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi again
Are you using a skin control bar to navigate or your own
    buttons?
If your own buttons, are the properties set up correctly for
the "forward" button on the slide before question 1?
Secondly, and here is where it starts getting messy, what are
your quizz settings? I know you are allowing backwards movement,
but are you allowing users to review the quizz and are you
    displaying results at the end?
Lastly, are you running on an LMS or not?
Sorry for all the questions, but they all could have an
impact on the problem, so let me know and we'll see what can be
    done
    Cheers

  • Branching quiz based on unanswered questions

I'm using Captivate 5.5 to design an awareness module that contains 2 short knowledge checks at key points in the module (around 5-6 questions for each). The knowledge checks aren't compulsory and learners can move freely backwards and forwards through the module, and therefore can skip questions.
We want to encourage them to answer all the questions (but not force them to if they don't want to). I've thought of branching the module at the end, with uncompleted questions branching to a reminder slide, and all questions completed going to a summary of the module.
The way I've tried to do this is to use an Advanced Action with the CpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions variable to trigger the branching. This works okay if the learner doesn't move backwards. Once they go backwards past a question they haven't answered yet it will be counted as unanswered a second time. This means that there is no way they can ever get the variable to 0 and then move to the summary slide.
Is there any way to use the CpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions variable to get it counting the unanswered questions correctly?
The other way I had thought of doing it was to add another variable that changes when the branching/reminder slide is visited the first time, and having the Advanced Action check the variable to see if the slide has been visited before and if it has then it forces the slide to be skipped. This would assume that the learner went back and found and answered all the questions they missed or decided not to answer them all.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

My latest blog post has a work flow, not totally the same because it is meant for Review status, but can easily be translated to make your last scenario possible.
