Going back to Leopard - OS X 10.5.8

All right, while my installation of Snow Leopard has been less fraught with misery than many of you who have been corresponding here, I'm not happy with how it's screwed up my CS4, TM and who knows what else that I haven't yet discovered. So my question is this: How do I go back to Leopard - OS X 10.5.8 where everything was running smoothly?

If you want to go back to Leopard, then you will need to do an erase and install (ignoring use of TM). I would first try the Leopard (i.e., 10.5) DVD. But, you may have to use the Snow Leopard (i.e., 10.6) DVD for the erase part. Let's assume the first for now. Startup from the DVD by holding down c when starting up. Next, when able, choose your language and stop. Then, using the menus at the top, select Disk Utility and erase you drive. Next, quit Disk Utility and continue the install. After the install is complete, insert your Leopard applications disk and install the programs you want. Now, you are done except for restoring you data, apps, and settings using whatever media are available to you.
In the other case, you will have to exit the installer after exiting Disk Utility. Next, you would startup with your Leopard DVD again by holding c down during startup. Now, after selecting your language again, just click install. After the installer is finished, install your applications as above.

  • Doubts about going back to Leopard because lion made the computer very slow

hi i bought a macbook  pro on 2009 it came with leopard operating system. When lion came into the market i installed it but since then the computer is very slow.
I took it to an apple sotre and they told me that the memory was almost full so i bought an external hard drive where i have now all my music, photos and documents. But the computers is still very slow.
So im thinking about going back to leopard but i have some questions. i hope someone here help me
    1. will i experience any problem synchronizing my iphone 5 or my ipad4?
    2. will i be able to update itunes to the last version?
    3. how shall make a backup of my computer
    4. What do i have to do to restore leopard into my computer
    thanks!

How much RAM does it have..?
To find out, go up on your menu bar to: Apple > About This Mac
If you have no other problems and plenty of free HDD space? Then 2GB of RAM will feel real slow running multiple Apps in Lion or Mountian Lion and you should try upgrading the RAM 4GB or more before moving back to Snow Leopard.

  • Going back to leopard from snow leopard Can I restore from Time machine

My Imac continues to lock up about three times a day since I went to Snow Leopard.
I want to go back to Leopard where I did not have these problems.
Can I reformat and do a clean install and then restore everything from time machine even though the back up is from Snow Leopard?

You can restore the system to any previous dated state shown in your Time Machine backups. However, this will not preserve anything you created after that date. You can also restore individual files & folders from later backups but you may or may not be able to use files you created using Snow Leopard while running Leopard, depending on the parent application & if it was updated to use a new file format with Snow Leopard.
It is generally much better to resolve the issues you have with Snow Leopard & continue using it than to try to do this. Most issues are fairly easy to resolve. If you want help with that, let us know.

  • Snow Leopard way to unstable for me, going back to Leopard

Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me.
I did a clean installation from Leopard, reformated my hard disk and started all new.
Since day one I had constant Kernel Panics, I have to hold de power button of my computer to boot up again. Sometimes the only thing running is Safari with two or three tabs open.
No idea what's causing the problem. Just now I was creating a DVD using iDVD, spent hours editing in iMovie then encoding the file when I had another **** kernel panic.
I am furious I lost all my work!!
This is the last report I sent to Apple, if someone could read it and find the cause I will be extremely grateful.

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • Going back to Snow Leopard

I'm very disapointed with Lion right now.  SInce I've downloaded it, my computer is running slower, I've lost programs and files.  It has been a pain.  I've gone in and fixed/repaired files to help make it faster, but it's slowing down again.  I've had to run the applications bundle install to get iphoto back, but some photos were gone.  I back up to a external drive using time machine, but I am wanting to revert back to snow leopard.  How do I go about doing this? I want to do this right, because I do not want to lose all of my stuff.  First, with my external hard drive I have everything saved in a Mac OS (journaled) format. Is that the right way things should be saved and is that the correct way to back up the macbook?  Secondly, what would I need to do to revert it back and ensure that I don't lose all of my files, music, photos, etc.?  Lastly, if Lion gets fixed up by apple, will I be able to re download it or would I have to purchase the software again?  I do not know how to fix up Lion to make it work better, so I am thinking that reverting back may be the best option for the time being.
I appreciate any help and please, make it simple.  I get lost with some of the computer technical terms. :/

  • Ibook g4 my screen is funny colored and some flashing sometimes goes back to normal anybody know whats wrong with it I just got it 2 weeks ago?

    I have a problem with a apple ibook g4 I bought 2 weeks ago
from ebay. It had tiger and I installed leopard on it and it had been
working perfectly for about a 2 weeks. There was nothing wrong using
tiger except it did not remember my settings. I would have set up my
email or itunes everytime the computer started. I wanted the updated
leopard so I installed that and it fixed the memory problems. After
that it worked great with no problems at all for a week, until now. Here is my problem when I start my
ibook it starts up with a blue screen instead of the grey screen. This all started when I closed the top and
put it in sleep mode when I opened it back up when it came out of
sleep mode the screen looked funny colored and a little
fuzzy. I have shut the top down and opened it hours later and it never did this before. Sometimes it will flash in and out of the funny colors to normal
look and other times it will stay that weird fuzzy off looking color. And it will start and sometimes flash between funny
looking to normal and then switch to normal color. I had no problems
with it doing this until 2 days ago. I am sending you
this email using my ibook g4 and it looks normal right now for a few seconds then it flashs a little and goes back to that weird screen. This
morning when I first started it up it went weird colored a little then
back to normal and stayed normal for about 1 minute. Yesterday when I was using it I saw
a quick blue colored flash once in a while as it looked normal other then the flash then went to the strange colors. It has never done this
before either until 2 days ago. My battery does not set
flush in the case but I don't think that would be a problem. My Ibook
is the 14" version with 1.42 Ghz  PPC 7450 chip and 1 Gb memory. This
is my 1st apple and not as familiar with it as windows. What do you
think is wrong with it? It worked so good up until now. I would hate
to just junk it I just bought it. I have heard it coulod be the logic board. Does anybody have a clue what is wrong? Any help would be VERY much appreciated. Thank You, Jim

It does sound like the logic board. It's not uncommon for an iBook with a faulty logic board to work intermittently. You can't count on it, though. It could fail completely at any time.
DT&T Computer Services in Fremont, California has the best deal I've found on logic board replacements. They do free diagnostics, so they would make sure that's what you need, and there is a six-month warranty on the repair.
    http://www.dttservice.com/ibookg4.html
I'm always a little sad that people are basing their opinions of Macs on these older iBooks. Yours is the newest iBook in existence, but it's still over five years old — ancient in computer terms.

  • When deleting a message in mail, how do you get it to advance to the next message? whenever i delete a message it goes back to the previous message.

when trying to delete a message in mail, i would prefer to advance to the next message. i delete a message and the curser goes back to an earlier message. i usually delete the most recent messages first.

First of all, you've posted in the Snow Leopard forum, but your profile says you're running Leopard, not Snow Leopard. What version of Mac OS X are you really running? You should always be sure that your profile matches the forum you're posting in, otherwise the "solution" to your problem may be totally ineffective.
Part of your problem is that deleting Mail messages depends on how you have them ordered. If they are listed in Descending Date order (most recent at the top), and you want to delete a series of consecutive emails from an earlier time, you should select the last one in that group and press the Delete key; with each one that's deleted, the selection will move to the next one up the list. You could also select the first one in the group, then Shift-click on the last one in the group and press Delete to get rid of them in one step.
If you have them listed in Date Ascending order (most recent at the bottom), you would have to select the oldest message(s) you want to delete and select it (or them) and press the Delete key, and the selection would move down the list to the next most recent message in the window.

  • Why does safari reload page from beginning when going back in history

This behavior in safari is driving me nuts, i'm using mountain lion 10.8.1 and everytime i swipe two fingers to the left after having left a page to checksomething, safari goes back to the page and starts me in a different place (usually very beginning) than where i was when i navigated away from the page.  i mean what the ****? this gets very infuriating pretty quickly, especially on really long pages that i now have to navigate to the same section i was when i navigated away from the page.
example, i was reading about the samsung apple verdict on cnet, and i was reading i dont know, the 30th or so comment in:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57500273-37/apple-v-samsung-the-infringing-dev ice-scorecard/
I then navigated away from the page to look for a tangent the comments made me think of, and when i swiped two fingers to the left, low and behold, i am now at the top of the page and have to figure out what comment i was up to.. what.. the.. heck man?? am i doing something wrong? is there a way to 'fix' this behavior?
I remember on snow leopard i could go back and forth between pages w/o the page having to reload/leave me at the top..
another example is newegg.com, i was looking at monitors and playing with the differnet choices when clicking 'more choices':
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=20&name=LCD-Monitors
scroll down to where it says options on the left pane, the page displays drop downs, i select a few, click on Search, and when i two-finger swipe to the left to get back, the drop downs are now gone!! that was the "last state" of the page, so why does the page have to get entirely reloaded?? It SHOULD still be in my cache and viewable in the exact same way as when i left the page..
    someone please help!

Jesus H Christ this is still driving me up the wall, i can't believe everyone is just accepting this.  Isn't there a way to fix this?  Can we at least have an option to turn this OFF?? Reloading a page everytime i go back is such a waste of time/bandwidth/my nerves when i am in the middle of a page

  • My macbook wakes up and then goes back to standy even when the lid is open.

so my macbook turns on and then the screen stays on for like 2 seconds then goes back to standby. it does not shut down because when i wake it up again by pressning any button, it is where i was before. Also when it is in standy even when the lid is on, the standby light blinks as if the lid is closed. i can never use it because the screen only stays on for 2 seconds then turns off going to stand by. does anyone have a similar problem or know how to fix this?
    thanks in advance!

now, in Lion, when you open the lid, it automatically detects that you opened and it turns on macbooks display

  • Fed up of Lion problems I want to go back to Leopard

I have installed Lion and I am not happy with it. Main reason it has slowed my MBP 2010 and worst battery life.
I want to go back to Leopard but I have doubt that do I need to install my paid application again? Or all the Lion applications will be available in Leopard.
    Please guide.

See Kappy's going back to SL from Lion guide.

  • Uninstalled snow leopard and went back to leopard.  happy again!!!!!

battery life is much better. macbook not getting hot and fan doesnt come on anymore. no more spinning wheel.
dont think i will be updating to snow leopard in a while

I had a MBP and iMac running Leopard and after upgrading to SL I too am have a litany of problems (it's not in my imagination and I'm not interested in trying a bunch of different things to try to fix them; doing so may only create more problems as new updates come out to fix those... then I have to potentially unfix my fixes to let Apple's fix fix things, get it?) and I would like to go back to Leopard.
I have Time Machine backups for both systems (MBP on 10.6 and iMac on 10.6.1) from BEFORE the upgrade to SL. I have backups on the TMs AFTER the upgrade to SL. I have no other backups (no bootable images.)
So, my actual question is: has anyone been in a similar position and successfully gone back to Leopard AND restored the TM backup to get them (at least from a user-data perspective) back to a current state?
I know I can't completely restore a post-upgrade backup (that would bring me back to SL), but I would like to go back to Leopard and get back all user data (email, itunes, iphoto, browser settings/bookmarks, etc.)
Has anyone actually done this and can recommend a path of least resistance to get there?
My wife, who was just about sold on going all-out Mac is now considering going back to WinXP and this is screwing with my grand all-Mac strategy... (I was very happy with the stability and trouble-free nature of OS X... not now)

  • Using time capsule for months but time machine only goes back to yesterday!

    Topic says it all.
I'm in a bind and I need something that might have been on my hard drive a month or so ago.
Anyway, I click time machine because that's the whole point of having a backup app, and to my suprise, the bar on the right only goes back to yesterday at 2am.
What the ****?? Is there some way of opening my time capsule bundle package file thing or what.
    Thanks
Running leopard, time capsule is 500gb and set to only take my pictures, music and a couple other folders.
    Thanks

Did anything change on your computer just before today? If you look at your Time Capsule's "Data" disk, how many "sparsebundle" files do you see?
If you see more than one (assuming you're only using it to back up one computer), Time Machine may have decided to start a new backup set. in that case you can probably access the old data if you click-and-hold (or control-click) on the Time Machine icon in the Dock and choose "Browse Other Time Machine disks".

  • Going back to SL without losing Lion license...

Hey everyone, is there a way to going back to Snow Leopard without losing my Lion license?
Lion is a piece of crap these days... I think I'll come back later, when the WIFI issue is solved.
My problem is that I installed Lion in 2 computers with my same account.
I read once that you could only use the same copy for 2 computers.
Thanks a lot for your help!

If you've downloaded Lion from the App Store then you can install or reinstall it on all the computers you own. There is no limit, and I have no idea where you got the 2 computer limit from as there is no such thing for OS X.
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Installed Vista on Black Macbook, but can't get back to Leopard! :(

I opened bootcamp on leopard, created partition etc. and then installed vista etc. Then on the vista installation partition screen, i clicked my partition, and it said somethig about it having to be NTFS, so I formatted the partition and installed vista fine. But now I am stuck on Vista, I only boot onto vista, If i turn on, it automatically goes into vista, and if I put in my Leopard disk, it just ejects it after a couple of minutes, when I boot the macbook, it does the boot sound, then just a white screen with no apple logo.
I'm new to mac, I actually just got this mac today.
But anyway, please help me get back to Leopard , i probably sound completely stupid, but hey I'm new!

    Hi Bassy,
while in OSX goto System Preferences - Startup Disk and set your OSX partition as the default startup disk.
On your next reboot your Mac should startup into OSX automatically.

    Stefan
