Going back to Mac OS 10.8.4 from Mac OS 10.8.5

Hi everyone,
I have a Mac Pro that I purchased with Mac OS 10.6 (with DVD instal), and I purchased Mac OS 10.8 a year ago. A few weeks ago, I upgraded to Mac OS 10.8.5.
Because of a bug with Avid Media Composer, I absolutely have to go back to 10.8.4.
I made a backup with Time Machine, erased my disk (once a year, a clean install doesn't hurt) and... and what can I do now ? When I launch the install of Mac OS 10.8, it automatically installs 10.8.5.
I tried to install the combo 10.8.4.dmg, but the Mac says it won't install a previous version of 10.8.5.
I also tried to go back to 10.6.8 and launch the combo 10.8.4.dmg, but then the Mac says Mac OS 10.8 lacks.
If anyone has an idea, it could be such a great help... thank you !
Cécile

You must erase the drive, reinstall 10.6.8, then upgrade to Mountain Lion. However, you will end up with 10.8.5, again. 10.8.4 or earlier are not available any longer. If you did not save the 10.8.4 system on a backup or save the 10.8 installer application, then you cannot downgrade 10.8.5.

can i upgrade to mac os x 10.8 from mac os x 10.6.8?

OS X 10.8 is not released yet so no one knows what the system requirements will be.
What model MacBook Pro do you have? To find out go to  > About this Mac, and click More Info... The model will appear under "hardware profile".
It is highly likely recent MacBook Pro models will be able to run OS X 10.8 just fine.
However, since the very early ones cannot run Lion, it is doubtful they will be able to run Mountain Lion. So the answer depends upon which model you have.

Can the Mac mini October 2012 boot from Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)?
It is needed to run applications that require Rosetta (Eudora e-mail, Palm Desktop PDA-PIM, Canvas drawing from ACDsee, etc). Thanks

Can the Mac mini October 2012 boot from Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)?
No. Your best option by far is to find updates or replacements for that long-obsolete software. In the long run, you'll have no other choice. As a last resort, you could do this:
Installing Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels
The instructions are slightly out of date. That's not a recommendation and I haven't tried it myself.

  • Because Firefox 4 has lost numerous bookmarks, including an entire folder, I need instructions for going back to 3.6.16 for American English, Mac OS X.

Firefox 4 has lost numerous bookmarks, including an entire folder, and because Organize Bookmarks has disappeared from the Bookmarks drop-down list, a requirement for restoring Bookmarks from my Profile (as I understand it), I would like to go back to 3.6.16. The one list I found has only 4.0 available as a download for American English, Mac OS X. How do I download 3.6.16?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Power Mac 7600 doesn't start from Mac OS 9.1 CD

I'm trying to boot from a Mac OS 9.1 CD on a Power Mac 7600 I'm trying to bring back to life
but it appears the blinking question mark. I've tried using the "C" command but it simply doesn't boot.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for any help

One of my favorite pre-G3 Macs! I have one that runs great.
---First, has anyone pulled/replaced/moved RAM modules? My experiences with several 7600's at work back in the 1990s was that the RAM needed to be matched in order in the slots and by size regardless of what the specs and several third-party tech reviews say.
There are eight RAM slots in two groups (of three and five slots) separated by an offset slot for a cache module You should see ID codes on the logic board by each slot: A1, A2, A3, A4; and B1, B2, B3, and B4. You want to load the slots in this order: A1, B1, A2, B2, etc, and match the module size so modules of the same size are paired. My 7600 has this pattern:
    A1: 128MB        B1: 128MB
    A2: 32MB          B2: 32MB
    A3: 16MB          B3: 16MB
    A4: 16MB          B3: 16MB
So, if modules don't match, match them and try again
Pairing RAM in this model gives a significant performance boost; the data path goes from 64-bit to 128-bit.
---Is the OS9 disk a full retail install disk or a gray one that came with a newer Mac? That could affect startup, Some disks for much newer Macs may not start a pre-G3 Mac.
---If the commuter has been off wall power for a long time the PRAM battery is likely deader than Yorick. That could affect startup from the hard drive but should not be at play when starting from a CD.
---Another issue  that affects old computers that have been stored and moved around is loose cards. Make sure all card and modules are fully seated, especially the processor card.
Anyway, those are some things to consider. Keep us posted!

  • Upgrading to Mac OS 10.4.X  from Mac OS 10.3.9

    Hi,
I just finally gave in and ordered my Mac OS 10.4 full retail install (CD-ROM) for my eMac USB 2.0.
First, this is an odd upgrade set containing Mac OS 10.4, and it's on CDs not DVDs?
Isn't this quite odd or what? Maybe it was a odd-lot made by Apple? Or was it a special CD-ROM package for CD based educational eMacs?
Anyway, I just wanted to get some replies on this so I know what is what.
It's supposed to be for any eMac. I just wanted a full install for the added benefits of being up-to-date with browsers and archive and install without having
to go through a odd process of fully installing Panther again with only upgrade install of Tiger.
    Here's the link:
    http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=104
For now I'll be cleaning house and getting my eMac ready.
    Thanks for any replies
    Cheers!

    eww,
The term "Clean install" and "Erase and install" appear to be used interchangeably quite a bit on these boards.
It appears people are just using the term for it's definition and it's quite clear
    what they mean.
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=c177&search=Go&q=clean+install
I don't mean to drag this on, but there's a lot of terms that people 'just know' exactly what you're talking about and there's no confusion going on.
Not always do people have to check Mac Help for every thing they want to know about Mac OS X and using it, they just know what you're talking about.
I think what I'm getting at here is, "Clean install" implies starting out new, by performing an erase and install - starting out fresh with a new installation
    of Mac OS X.
However, I agree very much that "Erase and install" is the proper term to use and
in the future that's the term I'll use to avoid any confusion.
    Anyhoo...
    Cheers and thank you!

  • Upgrading to Mac OS 10.4.10 from Mac OS 10.3.9....

    Hello all,
I finally broke down and purchased my first ipod and also an airport express with itunes. My bright idea was to play music from my ibook through the airport wirelessly to my stereo. Of course, on trying to set up both the ipod and the airport on the ibook I found out that they both require a minimum OS of 10.4.10
My questions - How hard is it to upgrade to this new operating system? How expensive is it? And what other surprises am I in store for?
    Thanks for all your help.
    -w

I recently updated my iBook G4 1GHz and a Blue & White G3 updated with a G4 ZIF using a 10.4 upgrade DVD from FastMac for $79.95. These disks were used to upgrade Macs after the introduction of 10.4. As long as you have 10.3.9 installed, the disk works just fine. It took about 45 minutes to upgrade, plus another hour or so to download (via DSL) all of the updates using Software Update. (If you don't have high-speed internet, FastMac also makes a disk with all of these available for an extra $5.00.) After all this, you'll be running OS X 10.4.11.
The updates went smoothly, and have been very stable so far. My only issue was that after the final .11 update, my FireWire drive wouldn't mount to the desktop. This was solved by removing the battery for at least 30 minutes, then reinstalling it and rebooting. Voila!
Other online Mac stores (Other World Computing, MegaMacs, etc.) sell full installs of 10.4 for anywhere between $99-129, but this worked for me. YMMV.
    Best of luck!

    Reset your computer’s PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
Note: To print these instructions, open theHelp Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) and choosePrint.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • Thanks to all, but giving up on Mac and going back to windows. Had enough!!

Thanks to all who have tried to assist with my issues with Mac movie and burning.
In short, I have made a 105 minute movie which includes photos with transitions, video, some titles and backing track, music. When I "share" the movie to Quicktime, it plays just fine. When I create a DVD in IDVD and then burn to a blank DVD, it does not play correctly on DVD players.
Specifically, the sound track is erratic in volume, cuts out in parts, or the DVD crackles up and is jolty.
ALTHOUGH it does play just fine in the Mac DVD player (not much good to those smart people that don't have a Mac).
Based on a lot of feedback on this forum I have tried:
    - creating disk image (works fine) but has same issue during play back on standard DVD
    - using verbatim quality disks
    - using professional quality in project properties
    - Simplifying the menu option
    - Ensuring I avoid drop zones when putting movie into IDVD
    - Ensuring I have minimum 25GB of free hard disk space (actually have over 140GB)
    - and most recently, changing the BURN SPEED to 1X.
Changing the burn speed to 1X did actually mean that the DVD played back fine on one of our DVD players. ALthough subsequent copies have cracked up a bit towards the end of the DVD.
When we try it in different DVD players, we tend to get different issues!!!!
Given that we are wanting to distribute the DVD to other families, we do not know what they are going to get. ie. it plays back differently on each DVD player we try.
Never used to have same issues with windows, plus find IMovie very limited in what you can do.
Back to windows for the next DVD, write this one of as a bad experience and a waste of money buying the IMac. Will NOT be recommending Mac at all.

How new is your iMac? I wonder if you have a bad burner. What you describe in terms of different players playing discs differently is really odd. I have authored over 40 DVDs of family stuff, DVDs for the soccer team I coach, etc. all on the Mac and without any problems with any player I've tried, and family members have used them as well without problems.
If you just bought the iMac you might consider seeing if they will replace the superdrive, though it sounds like you have made the decision to go back to Windows. From everything I hear (and no, not just from Mac people), Windows software is very challenging to use and yields very limited results - but good luck to you if you go that route.
