Going beyond iMovie on iMac?

I am a fresh iMac user, and have tried iMovie a bit. I also tried working with a 3 min. testclip in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (trial), but gave it up, due to bad performance / result in encoding/rendering.
My goal is to capture 40 minutes DV from my Sony TRV80 MiniDV camera (PAL), and edit it on the iMac, then output to DVD with as high quality as possible.
How will my single HDD iMac perform with the encoding to DVD in iMovie or FC Express ? I suspect that pans and zooms may create artifacts ?
Will the programs perform good enough with an external scratch disk (Firewire 400), or should I leave it all on the internal HDD ?

Your Mac with specs as you listed will do absolutely fine with iMovie, iDVD and Final Cut Express (FCE). Pans and zooms, effects, filters, etc. should cause it no trouble. Adobe CS3, however, may have been pushing your particular machine too far.
Using your internal HDD will also be fine, however most FCE users prefer to use external Firewire drives for a number of reasons. FW400 is quite adequate for video although you will find that most new FireWire drives now support both FW400 and the faster FW800.
Regardless of which drive you use, you should always keep at least 15-20% free space on your system HDD - the system needs this space to operate well.
If you plan to purchase FCE, get the latest version (v 3.5) as it is the correct version for the Intel Macs and it fixes a number of video capture issues that arose when OSX 10.4.9 was released (which I see is the version you are running).

Thank you so much for your response. I had these photos backed up on iCloud but, had I not, its good to have an alternate solution as the one you suggested. Actually, I went to the Apple store today and yes, you are absolutely correct Restoring in iTunes will result in permanent loss of photos unless backed up somewhere such as iCloud or other solution. Well, what they did was restore the phone in itunes ( I did not have iTunes downloaded to my computer which is why it did not work when I went to do it myself, I needed to go to the iTunes site and go to the download iTunes button because my windows based HP laptop does not come with itunes already downloaded). This retoration process took a while and I was forced to upgrade to the latest 7.1 iOS software which I was not too happy about -sometimes you like the way things work now :-) Anyhow, they said this restoration request happens as a result of a software update (which I was NOT in progress of an update or doing an update) or sometimes when you remove the power cable too quickly from the iphone (which I do not recall doing this either but...). Since I had backed up on iCloud all of the photos were downloaded back on my iphone 4s. Best of all was that my phone was back up and runnning and there was NO CHARGE at the apple store for this service of restoring my phone. Well, I just wanted to share the results and I appreciate all the responses and support I received. Thank you kindly.

It goes on syncing forever, without actually doing anything. I have tried everything, wiped the phone numerous times, deleted all files from the laptop but still no resolution. As a result, the phone does not really synchronise.
This started somewhere in May 2011 when I upgraded what proved to be a problematic s/w version and the phone has not recovered since.
Now I cannot update the iPhone s/w any longer.
Any clue?

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

Content in my div goes beyond the width

I have created a <div> to put my main content into. I have given it a width of 810px. However when I type a really long line of text into the <div> then it is not autowrapping the text to the next line when it goes beyond a width of 810 px. What could be the problem? It even creates a horizontal scroll bar when I preview the long line in a web browser.

"Red eye correction" goes beyond the eyeball.

I'm using PSE 3.0, Windows XP Home. Occasionally, when I try to apply "red eye correction", the "darkening" effect is applied to areas of the cheeks, eye brow, or forehead (as well as the eye). My guess is: The subject's skin color or "cosmetic makeup color" is within the range of spectra that "red eye correction" is sensitive to and therefore interprets that it too, needs darkening. How can I "mask off" or otherwise prevent PSE from going beyond the eyes of the subject in it's quest to "eradicate red eye"?

I only have PSE 2 so I don't know how the red eye correction tool works in PSE 3, but I'm guessing you can select just the eye (and maybe feather 1 or 2 pixels) before applying the tool.
You just might skip the red eye tool and do this instead:
- Zoom in to large eye.
- Select the red area and feather.
- Add a Hue/Saturation layer. Select Reds from the Edit menu, move Saturation slider left.

"This camera is a lot of fun and when i connected it to iMovie 09 I, in the first case, had to go to File, Import Movies and navigate to the SD card and choose all the .mov files which then imported seamlessly. Was able to edit and share the movie no problem."

Are you looking in the Videos app? iMovie on the iPad? The Photos App? I don't use iMovie but those are the three places where you should look.

If no - why? I have paid for imovie while buying iMac so I should be free to use it on all my apple devices.

The iMac runs on totally different operating system than the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. You could not use the Mac version of iMove on an iDevice so you would have to purchase the app for the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

There isn't a Late 2007 21-inch iMac. I think you are referring to a Mid 2007 20-inch iMac, right?
In that case, you can't give him your iMac with OS X Lion. OS X Lion is registered to your Apple ID, and he won't be able to reinstall Lion unless you give him your Apple ID.
The best you can do is to give him the Mac with Snow Leopard installed, if you have the DVD. Follow these steps:
1. Insert the DVD and hold the C key while your computer is starting.
2. Choose your language, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility.
3. Choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
4. Close Disk Utility and reinstall Mac OS X. When the installation finishes, hold the mouse or trackpad to eject the disc and turn off the computer.
This is the most recommended way to do it and avoid problems. Anyway, if you insist on giving him the iMac with Lion, you just have to start in OS X Recovery (holding Comman and R keys while your computer is starting), use Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD as described above, and finally, reinstall Lion with your Apple ID

Top-left of the screen, just under the red circle that would normally close windows, do you see see "Show" with a triangle pointing to your right? If so, click it.

IMovie (and iMac) does not recognize device(s)

Hello and thanks for reading. I know this topic is like beating a dead horse but this one is unique. I'm a professional editor and I couldn't figure this out so any help would be appreciated. Here's the play by play:
I edit using FCP 5.1.4 and have for years. I've had the same set up running for years and do high volume editing.
I have a chain of 4 Lacie drives, all connected by firewire.
At the end of that string, I have my tape player for capturing footage, a Sony GV-HD700, which then goes on to the TVs, DVD players, etc.
Also the end of that string, I also have a disc burner for making DVDs.
So it goes: iMac > Lacie #1 > Lacie #2 > Lacie #3 > Lacie #4 > Sony tape player & DVD burner > TVs, VCRs, etc.
Yesterday, I was in a rush and the DVD burner was going slow so I unplugged it from the end of the string of Lacie drives and plugged it directly into the back of the computer to see if it would burn faster.
It didn't, so I plugged it back into the end of the Lacie string.
At that point, Lacie #4 became unrecognizable to the computer and therefore so was the tape player, which is further down the chain.
When I plugged the tape player high up the chain, into Lacie #3, it still was not recognized.
I plugged the tape player (Sony GV-HD700) directly into the back of the computer...still not recognized.
I took the Sony GV-HD700 into our other editing bay and it was still not recognized.
I pulled out my camera (Sony HDR-FX1000) and plugged it directly into the back of the original computer...recognized just fine.
I plugged Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into the back of Lacie #2...recognized just fine.
I took the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into our other editing bay...recognized just fine.
I have a big deadline so I said "Screw it." and was just going to capture from the camera for the time being.
I reset the Lacie drive chain, plugged the Camera into the back of Lacie #4 (just like the original setup) and BANG: Lacie #4 and the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera was not recognized.
I plugged the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera directly into the back of the computer...still not recognized.
I took the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into our other editing bay...still not recognized.
I thought it might be a Final Cut Pro issue so I pulled up iMovie and it does not recognize any device connected to the computer even though I'm looking directly at it plugged in.
The entire iMac has lost the ability to recognize devices that I've used for years. I've now lost the ability to capture footage and I'm running out of time. It's almost as if the devices were getting infected by one of the Lacie drives (I think Lacie #4). Is that even possible? Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I don't know if it's something I need to change on the iMac to recognize them again, or if it's a setting on the device to reset the connection, or if somehow the Lacie drive corrupted the devices and made them unrecognizable to iMacs.
It's very, very weird.
