Going from a PPC to an Intel Mac

Will OS 10.8 Mountain Lion support PPC apps (those I've been running on OS 10.3 up to 10.5.8 Leopard)? I think they will run also on OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, but can't confirm until I have an Intel Mac (needed to run OS 10.6). If OS 10.8 will not support them, will OS 10.7 Lion? I Know that 10.9 Maverick will not.

Thanks, Lyssa for your reply
A good portion of the software you're running probably has an Intel-compatible version at this point.
That's true, except for one really important CAD app I need. My CAD app (Canvas X) was no longer upgraded for Mac starting about 2007. It has been upgraded only for Windows. I think this is about the same time that Mac completed its switch from PPC to Intel, which most likely explains the unwillingness of my CAD company to upgrade. I'm reluctant to attempt running a Windows CAD app on a Mac, using Bootcamp or Parallels.
Much better I think is to get the latest MacBook that will run OS 10.6
Try running Canvas X in Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels for use in Mavericks.
Here is Adobe CS2 Photoshop (PowerPC) running in SLS in Parallels:

  • Opening PPC songs on Intel macs

    Hi everyone,
anyone had problems when opening PPC songs on Intel macs? specialy large music scores causes intel logic to crash...
    best.
    intel imac 20   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2Gb RAM
    Powerbook 17 1.33 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1Gb RAM

hi andre, look up this topic here. justin c, has written about it, i think.
he recommends "rebuilding your autoload" for starters.
if these songs crash logic, you might have to do a fresh autoload and import all the files and start from scratch. bad, i know.
file corruption seems to be at the bottom of it all.
i have trouble just editing something in 7.2, and then running it in 7.1.1.! and i'm using the same mac for both.

  • Music library from Mini (windows formatted) to Intel Mac Book

My daughter's windows computer crashed hard the other day. She has all her music on her mini and we want to transfer the music from the mini to the Intel MacBook. I've been unable to find any software that does this transfer. There are lots that will move from a Mac formatted mini to a Mac computer, or from a Windows formatted mini to a Windows-based computer, but none that I've found that will do the transfer from Windows to Mac directly.
    Any suggestions?

  • Logic Pro 8 PPC Songfiles on Intel Macs?

    Dear fellow board members,
did anyone experiance problems with a Logic 8 Song file, that was created and saved with Logic 8 on a PPC-Mac, and which has then been opened on Logic 8 on an Intel-Mac? Would I be save to create my Logic 8 Autoload Song (With Plug-Ins, Instruments, Busses, Aux', etc.) on my G5 PPC now, and later import it to a MacPro, when I would switch to an Intel MacPro?
I would be happy if you want to share your ideas or experiances!

  • Possible to move a virtual PC from VirtualPC to Tiger on Intel Mac?

I am migrating from a G5 running Panther to an Intel Mac running Tiger. I've got VirtualPC on the G5, and a virtual machine all set up. I know there are several possible solutions for running WinXP stuff on the Intel Mac. Is there any way, other than starting from scratch, to move this virtual XP machine from the G5 to have it run on the Intel (whether with or without VirtualPC)? If not, what's the easiest way to set up a WinXP environment on my Intel Mac (I have a couple of PC-only applications I need to run)?
    Mike

Let us know how you make out.
the good news is that it worked flawlessly - in about 15 minutes, my VPC .vhd file was automatically converted by "Transporter" (part of Parallels) into a valid virtual machine that ran just like it used to, on my new Mac Pro. Cool. The bad news is that it's now saying that since the "hardware" has changed, it wants me to authorize/authenticate/activate the XP installation. It says I have 3 days to do it. I see some posts on-line about converting the original VPC CD-ROM set into something that can be installed into a brand new Parallels virtual machine, but in my case, I already have one and I don't have a real PC on which to do the steps they suggest. So, I haven't quite figured out what to do about this issue yet...

  • HELP WITH TRANSFER FROM IBOOK G4 TO NEW INTEL MAC

    HI
I just got a new intel mac and want to transfer all my stuff from my ibook G4 ... I tried the migration assistant, I plugged in the fire wire and turned on my ibook whilst pressing the T down. I get the firewire icon on my old machine but the new one still says 'waiting for old machine to restart' It just wont do anything when it gets to that point.
I dont think I'm doing anything wrong but the thing is gettting me aggravated to say the least.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Karen can't help there but wanted to warn you.
I did the same thing--iBook G4 to intel iMac, did a "transfer all my stuff" and had problems. At least one G4 program caused my iMac to crash at start-up (it was a special anti-virus program). Also some messy things like the iMac though it was on a wireless network after the copy (like my iBook was) when it was, in fact, on a wired internet connection (it still worked but I got errors in the console log). Just messy.
Once you get your problem sorted out I'd be careful about which programs I transfered over.

  • Move pair of 1 TB HDs from G5 PPC to new INTEL Machine?

I have had a workhorse PPC G5 for many years, but software upgrades demand I graduate to an Intel-based machine. Can I simply move the two 1TB Hard Drives from the old machine to a new one or are they incompatible? They are both about a year old.

They are compatible, but the partitioning map or tables (Apple PM) are not and need to be reformatted to GUID is all.
Better in FW case until you copy files you need and reformat before using internally. With 4 internal bays, you'll still have one free.
And skip Applications during Setup (or Migration) Assistant step and you should be fine, and then do fresh installs and avoid having to redo later.

  • Problems backing up then booting from a firewire drive on Intel Macs

    Hi
I wanted to help a friend back up his Macbook and then install Bootcamp.
I took over my trusty external firewire drive (Makeytec MHD-25 Combo enclosure + Samsung 80Gb HDD).
    So... I ran Disk Utility
Highlighted the firewire drive, clicked Partitions, named it "Backup". Clicked Options -> GUID -> Partition
I backed up his computer with SuperDuper onto Backup. SuperDuper automatically makes the drive bootable. At the end Backup was mounted on the desktop and all files are there.
But Backup wouldn't boot the computer. Instead I got a grey screen for a long time, then the Apple logo with the spinning cog, then after a few more minutes a circle with a bar through it (like a no smoking sign minus the cigarette)
    Things I tried after this....
Partitioned the drive again, double checking that I had selected GUID
Erased the drive zeroing out all the data
Backing up using CCC (with make drive bootable option checked) instead of SuperDuper
Could not get this drive to boot his computer.
Then took the drive back home. Tried doing it with my MacMini (same problem)
Then plugged it into my Powerbook, Partitioned it as Apple Partition Map, ran SuperDuper, rebooted from it fine.
My conclusion: The drive will boot a G4 just fine, but not an Intel based Mac.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    A workaround:
The drive enclosure also has support for USB "1.1/2.0", including the ever important cable.
I reconnected it to the Macbook, partitioned the drive back to GUID, then I used super duper to back the Macbook drive (again!). I used firewire (only because it was much quicker - 6Mb/s vs 2.8Mb/s)
Once I did the backup, I ejected the external drive, disconnected it, then plugged it back in with USB, then selected it as the start up disk, then hit restart. Machine rebooted just fine although very slowly.
Still doesn't answer the question of why booting via the firewire port works fine with a G4 mac but not Intel.

  • Power Managment in PPC vs. Intel Mac

I had a question about power management. Previously I have used a Mac Mini PPC for a home server. Everytime my power would flicker, the Mac Mini would bring itself back up.. (I had marked Power up after power failure in System Prefs). But now, since I have had the new Intel mini.. if the power flickers, it may, or may not come back up.. depending if the power flickers quickly. I am guessing this is b/c the BIOS is different in the new Intel Minis... but I would figure Apple would have it behave the same... but it flat out doesn't.
    Any suggestions?

Well, I was just presenting a single case. We actually have 100s of these mac minis in the field that we do not have physical access to. A UPS would solve one of the problems, but not all. The solution that Apple previously had in place where the Mini would start up whenever power was applied worked great for us. But in this case we need to get something that would either do that, or allow us/user to turn on the mini without physical access to it (its locked up). Any other suggestions?

  • PPC software on Intel Macs

I have a copy of Photoshop Elements 2 from 2003. On the CD there are Windows and Mac versions. The Windows version works well on my WIndows machine.
I tried to install the Mac version on my Macbook but it wouldn't work. I thought there was a converter built-into OSX to make it work. How do I do this or would I be better with a new version (Photoshop Elements 6)?

Photoshop Elements 4 is the earliest version that will run on 10.5 - and there are reports of oddities with that. v6 works perfectly well on 10.5.

  • Moving from Leopard (PPC) to Leopard (Intel)

Is there any documentation for migration of server hardware. I have Leopard 10.5.2 server running on a PowerMac G5 and I'd like to move it to newer MacPro hardware. It's currently the OD Master, and it's running AFP, Netboot, Update Server, and it's currently bound to an AD domain. I use Workgroup Manager to set policies for about 50 Clients, as well as ARD.
I see a lot of posts, and documentation for Migrating from one version to another (i.e. Tiger to Leopard), but I'm having difficulty finding documentation regarding moving Data, Settings, and Services over to newer hardware.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    HI,
How much free space on your startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*
Check 3rd party vendor sites for 10.6 compatibility.
*I have never used Force Quit so often, and it amazes me that I have had to use it with Safari, Mail and System Preferences.*
Go here for help with Safari Maintenance
For Mac Mail. From the Menu Bar, click Mailbox/Rebuild. This can take several minutes.
If Mac Mail continues to freeze, open the Mac Mail application. From the Menu Bar, click Mail/Preferences. Make note of the preferences. Quit Mac Mail. Locate this file.
~/Library/Preferences. Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac. Try Mac Mail...
Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. If you have 3rd party plugins in your user account, they are likely incompatible with 10.6. Move them to the Trash.
You didn't mention maintenance ... try Mac OS X - Maintenance
*Why, for example, is Bridge, which came with Photoshop Elements a year ago, only loading intermittently?*
Check the Adobe site for 10.6 compatible updates.
Make sure your system software is up to date.
Click the Apple Menu  / Software Updates.
*Some days I cannot get a connection. Or I get a connection and things are suspiciously slow - and yes, then I find that once again the connection has dropped.*
    Try Open DNS
Click the computer icon and follow the instructions...
Upgrading from one OS to another can be daunting at times... hope something I've suggested helps.

  • Someone tell me why is it so difficult to print from my Intel Mac Mini

I'm so frusrated at this Intel Mac Mini of mine. I wish honest to God that I never bought this evil little machine.
    I have the following printers:
    HP Photosmart 7550
    HP Laserjet 1012
    Canon MP830
I can't get anything to print! It so **** frustrating. I switched my wife from her WinXP to a Intel Mac Mini (10.4.6). She hates the Mac Mini because she can't print anything.
Why is it so difficult? Please someone enlighten me.
After months (not kidding) of searching on the web I was able to get the Photosmart 7550 to print using one of the gimp drivers, but I couldn't get it to change the paper type or quality. So that tells me I can't print any photos from my Mac. Need to use the WinXP box.
Then I was able to get the 1012 printing by selecting "open using rosetta" for the Printer Setup Utility, and selecting the "HP LaserJet 4 series - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2". So now I could at least print BW docs. Great the Mac Mini is not a total waste. Then I updated software, which include the Mac mini SMC Firmware Update. I don't know what did it, but now I can't print to the 1012 anymore. ARGHH!
I tried deleting the Library/Printer/HP directory, Reseting the Printing System, Restarting the CUPs, Installing PDDs, Installing the gimp drivers. What the ****! Why do I need to do any of this? I thought the Mac was suppose to be so easy. With all those **** commercials talking about how the Mac can do anything a PC can do, you would think one of those things is being able to print.
Those people making those commericals should try using the "Printer Setup Utility" program. That will change their tune. First you have to search for your printer, then pick the Printer Model, and then pick the specific model. And God forbid you click to fast, oops you've now picked a generic printer, needs to start all over again. There's no back button. You've already committed to the generic printer type. Now you have to open the Printer Setup Utility again and delete the generic printer and go search for your printer again. Lame.
Don't get me started with the Canon MP 830. I thought, ok maybe its because the 1012 and 7550 are older printers. I'll go buy a new printer - they must have current drivers for that. Canon tells me that the MP 830 is only a single OS machine, meaning you can only connect it to a windows machine and only other windows machines can print from it, or connect it to a Mac, and only other Macs can use it - Again, Lame.
Really I wanted to love the Mac OS. When I first got it, I was loving it. But what good is it if I can't print. I searched the web and it seems I'm not the only person having issues with printing.
I hate this Intel Mac Mini with every fiber of my being. Ok, maybe my printing woes are only because it's a Intel chip, and the PPC macs are golden. But come on, if you can't print from a computer, what good is it?
Please, someone help me. Otherwise, anybody want to buy a Intel dual core Mac Mini?
mac mini duo core Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You have two different issues: HP and Canon.
I don't know if I believe the Canon people. Windows XP has lots of different print options. Try installing Bonjour on Windows and then setting up a networked, Color Apple Laserwriter PS printer using "http://macmini.local:631" (assuming macmini is the name of your Mac). I have done this before (though not on a Canon). I am sure Canon will only support a standard configuration and this is not quite standard. Give it a try. It doesn't sound like it can hurt anything in your current setup.
For the HP, you might have to just wait for an updated driver from HP. HP has always had this problem. They are a huge printer company and I'm sure they get Apple hardware and OS versions before anybody else in the world. And yet, it seems as if they don't even begin working on their drivers until Apple officially releases a new OS. HP drivers are always the last to show up for a new OS and the first to break. If you get it working under MacOS 10.4.6, and then upgrade to 10.4.7, it is very likely that the HP drivers will stop working.
Unlike some of the other big companies, HP seems to have made the transition from Classic MacOS to MacOS X seamlessly. Their printer driver software works just as well on MacOS X as it did under MacOS.

  • Problem with Java app on Mac OS X... works fine in PPC, not on Intel

    Hi all,
I'm at a loss... I've always been under the impression that java is the same no matter where it's running, but I've come across something that surely counters that line of thought. At work, we use a java application from DTI to publish our newspaper. This app works just fine on Mac OS X 10.4.x on PPC Macs, but the same application doesn't work on Intel Macs, also 10.4.x.
The app launches and appears to be working fine, but there's a point where it must download some support files from the server. This is where it breaks with the error:
    java.io.IOException: null, com.dtint.macutils.AppFile.decode

I've got no clue why this wouldn't work across platforms unless it was compiled for the PPC processor or something, but then wouldn't it either launch in Rosetta or not at all on the Intel? I'm a systems admin, not a programmer, so I've really no idea where to start looking.
What I have done to this point is made sure I'm on the latest Apple-released Java, as well as copied the Java files from the PPC to the Intel to see if there was something there. Nothing makes any difference.
This would be a major coup if I could get this working... does anyone have any thoughts or ideas about getting this to work?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Migrating from 1.25Ghz G4 to Intel iMac problem

    Hi there!
    Question in brief:
Can I install old (non-universal) software (such as IDCS2 and Qk6.5) on a new Intel iMac?
    Question at length:
Just got a new iMac here, and wanteed to do a migration (which I've done problem-free between PCC Macs) and have hit upon a problem. The new iMac will not see the old Mac (connections/cables/old mac have been tested). New man just says "Waiting for your old mac to restart"
I came here looking for an answer, and fount this post
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4753948&#4753948
So it looks like it's going to be a LONG job. Can I just reinstall non-universal 3rd party apps from original CDs? We have NO universal software at all.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kappy
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not being clear enough – ou see I'm not exactly sure of what migration assistant is capable of.
I know that when you connect the two macs MA Upon start up (Migration Assistant) can copy the user settings. I presumed it could do this because it was copying over the newer mac's user settings at a point where the newer mac a total access to the drive. I therefore presumed that if (instead) the iMac had been started up, and then I ran MA, it would not be able to replace the user data, because it is in use.
That link I put in the original post said that I shouldn't do applications via MA from a PPC to an Intel one. So I'll have to reinstall those from the original disks. That's O.K., right?
    Thanks again ;0)
