Going from aperture to LR PROBLEMS!

So I just used a aperture to LR plug in, that is now bundled with today's version of LR update. It all seemed to go smoothly except now in my LR some images that were edited in aperture came across as unedited. Not all but it's 50/50. Which makes this plug in somewhat useless.
So more or less I have two versions of each image.. Original and edited one that had a star rating. So now in Lightroom both of those look the same (unedited) even the one which is tiff and clearly has the rating which should have been the edited image?
has anyone else had issues like this while migratin? Any help would be appriciated.
thx

The behavior sounds consistent, but you should learn what is going on in order to achieve the best desired outcome.
Adobe assumes you want to keep your masters, and nearly all of us do want to retain the masters.  Lightroom does not have code to interpret and apply Aperture adjustments, which is understandable.  So what Lightroom can take is your master images and adjusted previews from Apeture, along with the metadata.
What you're seeing are the masters (you refer to these as "unedited"), and Aperture previews (JPEG files you are calling "edited").  You may or may not want the previews, and you can select or deselect this option before running the plug-in.  Most of us will want the previews.  You can also choose to have the original and preview stacked, depending on the options you choose before you run the plug-in.
If you do want to migrate with previews, you will need to generate them first.  You likely want to regenerate them using the largest size possible.  Delete previews on images you don't want previews for (low-rated images or rejects).
Having said that, I've documented an issue in the forums where the plug-in does not copy all the previews available!  So you'll need to make a choice of whether to migrate now, or hope for an update that does copy all the previews.

  • When going from Aperture 2 to 3 and managed library to an existing Aperture 3 referenced

I am having to move several 2 TB Managed Aperture 2 Libraries to a new drive because the drives they are on are full and cannot be upgraded. I am copying them over to a new 4 TB drive and can either export the images out of the managed Aperture 2 Libraries or should I, once they are on the new drive, upgrade the "Managed" Libraries to Aperture 3 then export the images. I have been using Aperture 3 for about a year and have about 7 TB of images in an "unreferenced" Aperture 3 Library which is where ultimately I want to be able to access the old images.
Also what is the best way to export them out to maintain the integrity of the "Project/Folder/Album" structure I use.
And finally, is there a theoretical limit as to how large the Aperture 3 "Unreferenced" Library can be? My Unreferenced Aperture 3 Library is almost 200GB's. I have about another 6 TB's of images to add once upgraded.
    Thanks for your help!!

I have been using Aperture 3 for about a year and have about 7 TB of images in an "unreferenced" Aperture 3 Library which is where ultimately I want to be able to access the old images.
If I understand you correctly, you want to create a consolidated single aperture 3 library on your new 7TB drive.
And now you have a small aperture 3 library on that drive and want to add the images from several Aperture 2 libraries, that are now on a different drive, that is filling up, correct?
Also what is the best way to export them out to maintain the integrity of the "Project/Folder/Album" structure I use.
To keep the integrity of your old projectaa and albums, your edits and tags, without losing the lossless workflow, I suggest to import your old libraries as libraries and not to export the images from these libraries to reimport them.
I'd do the following for each of your Aperture 2 libraries:
Do you still have Aperture 2 running, along Aperture 3, or can you reinstall it? Then I'd run the Aperture First Aid Tools on each of your old libraries to rebuild them and to ensure that they are having no glitches. Do that in Aperture 2, if possible. To launch the First Aid hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click the Aperture 2 library. Then select "Rebuild".
Copy the rebuild library to your new drive.
Double click your Aperture 3 library to launch Aperture 3 on it and use the command "File > Import > LIbrary" to import the Aperture 2 library into the Aperture 3 library. This will maintain all your projects, albums, edits, metatdata tags.
Repeat for all your Aperture 2 libraries.
Before you delete any copy of your old libraries, check carefully, if they imported well.  And check, if your backup of the old libraries is current, before you do the rebuild in Aperture 2.

There is no limit to the size of an Aperture library, that I know of. For merging libraries by importng one into the other you will need plenty of free space.  See this: Aperture 3.4.3: Release notes
Scroll down to the paragraph "A note on upgrading your Aperture library" at the end of the document.
It might be better, to distribute your combined library over two drives. 6TB on a 7 TB drive might be problematic, because the OS may occasionally more free space to perform repairs and rebuilds.

  • Going from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 to a 2nd Mac?

I started with Aperture 2 installed from a DVD, then upgraded to 3 using a download and serial number.  Now that Aperture 3 is in the MacApp Store, I can't just sign in on a different mac and install Aperture.
Is there a way around this?
If so, can someone please help?
    Thanks!
    Matt

As hef_sf wrote the llicense for the boxed version of Aperture does not transfer to the Mac App Store so you can;t download from the MAS without paying for Aperture again.
What you can do is to download Aperture from this link Aperture 3.1 Trial and use your Aperture 2 and then 3 serial numbers to unlock it.
Post back if you have more questions.

  • Problem importing library from Aperture

After having imported my whole library from Aperture to Lightroom, I end up with 23000 photos, instead of 35000....

Could be a number of factors going on.  First, your library may have a large number of non-importable files, such as PNGs or MOVs.    Second, you may be looking at a view including versions in Aperture.  Do you use versions extensively?  There also could have been a problem during import, but that would require more information to troubleshoot.

  • Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date.  The files show up on the hard drive but many are not showing up in Aperture.

Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date.  The files show up on the hard drive with import date not created date, but many of these same files are not showing up in Aperture. Sometimes the clips actually show up with the current import but take on the video information from a previously imported file.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

  • Problem Importing Photos from Aperture 3 into iPhoto '11

I store my photos in Aperture 3, but import them into iPhoto to create calendars, cards, etc. I usually work with RAW or high resolution JPG images in Aperture. However, when I import these into the new iPhoto '11, it automatically converts my RAW images into very low resolution images (e.g., 100-200k instead of at least 1-2MB). I cannot seem to find an option to change this. This was not a problem with the old iPhoto. To import, I start in iPhoto, then click "Show Aperture Library", then drag my photos/folder. I would like to have an option to import images as RAW files, or just high res JPGs.
I know I can export my Aperture images to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto for a temporary fix, but that is such as hassle, especially since iPhoto and Aperture are supposed to work well together. Thanks for any suggestions!

Aperture creates preview images that contain all the adjustments you've made to the master image. These previews are what is shared with other apps such as iLife or if you drag and drop an image out of Aperture to another app or the Finder.
The size of the previews is controlled in Aperture Preferences. Open Aperture Preferences and click on the Previews icon at the top. In the bottom of this dialog there is a popup menu titled "Photo Preview". This is the setting that controls the size of the image Aperture shares with iPhoto. Change this setting to the size you want.
But wait, you're not done yet. Changing this setting does nothing until a new preview is created in Aperture. If you right click an image in Aperture there is a menu item near the bottom named "Update Preview". But what you really need is "Generate Preview". Right click the image and then hold down the option key and you'll see "Update Preview" change to "Generate Preview". Choose "Generate Preview" and a new preview will be created using the new size setting you made in Preferences. You need to do this for each and every image you wish to share at the larger size. You can select multiple images before selecting the "Generate Preview" command to speed things up.
Now when you share an image from Aperture to iPhoto the new larger file will be used. The advantage of smaller previews is your Aperture library will also be smaller but the trade off is what you get in other apps that are using your images.

  • Problem syncing photos to iPad from Aperture with a merged iPhoto/Aperture library

I recently 'upgraded' to us Aperture instead of iPhoto. One of the features of this was that I could continue to use the old iPhoto library in Aperture, and it automatically configures to Aperture settings - and it works great in Aperture.
The problem is that when I come to sync photos to my ipad, I have the drop down options for iPhoto and Aperture. The Aperture option shows zero photos, and the iPhoto option shows all the complete list of all my photo event/projects (from both my iPhoto days, and the more recent stuff in Aperture); but anything that I have created since moving to Aperture is greyed out and not accessible.
Any clues as to how I can sync the new photos as well as the old ones?
    Thanks

Have you enabled the sharing and creation of previews in Aperture? That is one big difference between Aperture and iPhoto - in iPhoto it is impossible to disable previews, but in Aperture you can create previews selectively, see: Working with Preview Images
Check Aperture's Preferences > Previews settings for "New Projects automatically create Previews".
Then select the images with missing previews in Aperture in the Browser and use the command "Photos > Update previews".
If that is not the problem, the iPod Photo Cache or the Aperture library may need repairing or rebuilding, see these documents on how to repair the Aperture Library:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
First try, if a simple repair of the Aperture library will suffice, then delete the iPod photo cache folder. Make sure, that the backup of your Aperture library is current, before try any of this.

  • Best Practice, Going from iPhoto to Aperture 3

I'm looking for advice on a best practice of moving from an iPhoto Library to Aperture 3. That is, if I even should do so.
I know that I can keep the photos in place (in iPhoto) and still access them from Aperture. (Or import just selected photos as needed.) Assuming disk space isn't an issue, would it not be better to import all of the iPhoto library into Aperture and only use Aperture going forward?
Is there a reason I might want to consider another path?
Any other setup advice for about to be first time users would be appreciated. Anything from your experiences you'd wish you had done differently etc.
    Thanks

Welcome to Aperture. The question of whether to use just one photo app be it iPhoto or Aperture or to try and use both has been covered here extensively.
The short answer is to pick one of the applications and commit to it. Trying to use both in some combination is at best going to make your life miserable and at worst, well whats worst than a miserable life?
I know that I can keep the photos in place (in iPhoto) and still access them from Aperture. (Or import just selected photos as needed.) Assuming disk space isn't an issue, would it not be better to import all of the iPhoto library into Aperture and only use Aperture going forward?
Yes you can keep the photos in iPhotos library, you can move them into Aperture library or you could move them to some other place on your disk and have Aperture access them from there. Again if your going to use Aperture then the best advice is to only use it.
Any other setup advice for about to be first time users would be appreciated. Anything from your experiences you'd wish you had done differently etc.
Take the time to become familiar with the different possible configurations of the Aperture library. The User manual is a good place to start, they did a good job explaining it all. And of course use this list, there are may good posts if you search for them, and many good people willing to offer advice.

Apart from the lock button problem in iphone 5 the display brightness suddenly goes blank and becomes normal after locking and unlocking the iphone. The Apple service centre in India is denying to service the iphone as it was purchase in USA even though the iphone is in warranty.

iPhones do not have an international warranty.  Warranty is valid only for the country of purchase.  This is most likely because different countries require different iPhone models.  Not reasonable to expect all countries to maintain stock for all models.

  • Going back/away from aperture

i have this problem with importing DNGs with all my settings (see my other post).
that made me think, what if in a year or two i decide to migrate away from aperture to another software (lightroom, captureone, unknown)?
is it possible to export your files/adjustment/settings and import them in another application?
i don't seem to be able to do it, as of now.
also, how do you make IVMP to read aperture adjustments? not keywords, image adjustments.
    thanks,
    @lberto

I'm not sure how helpful this will be Alberto, as your needs for metadata probably overshadow mine. Plus I have a RAW supported camera: key issue!!!
Prior to Aperture, I used PS CS2/ACR/Bridge combo. I set date/time in camera and diligently changed for time zones.
Import from CF card to "Unprocessed" folder under project/event under location under year folder structure
Rename in Finder using "Renamer4Mac" utility
    Save to DVD
Select in Bridge, open a select into ACR and save as PSD to "Part Processed" folder
Continue (hand notes for images processed I've done ... ugh) [BTW, comments/notes in Aperture has been requested by some folks and its a great idea in my mind]
Open each image in CS2 and adjust/crop/save ... as different versions for different print or crops. Save to "Processed" folder
    Burn folder to DVD
    Post-process in Pages, InDesign ...
With Aperture .... BTW: I do not generate Previews until I've completed the project
    Copy CF card to disk
    Burn DVD
Import from disk to new Project: name files using import naming options (I tend to use custom). Add Copyright and keywords (I tend to add a superset and then remove ad hoc later). Set auto-stack time to make as much sense as possible (adjust discrepancies manually later). Then import.
    First pass:
Scan images sequentially and reject, or mark as 1*, 3*, 5*. Note that Aperture caches the next/last images so this speeds up image "Loading" times considerably.
    Adjust any stack membership
    Second pass:
Adjust RAW settings ad hoc (for shadowy or very bright or shiny surface images I use different RAW presets)
Adjust for any exposure, levels, shadow/highlight, WB etc.
    Adjust straighten then dust
    Create different crop versions
Amend * ratings up/down and esp. for crop preferences
Alter keywords (delete or add additional if necessary)
Output to external editor (around 2% images) for filters or blemishes above/beyond spot/patch
    Set stack pick
Once this pass is complete, I generate full res. JPG's
    Back up to Vault
From that point I'm into post-process, and I'm doing the majority of that from Aperture direct into Pages and iWeb or from Aperture itself.
Except for panoramas, where I export TIF's to Calico, and re-import the new image, then manually stack with the original images, I hardly move out of Aperture. My use of CS2 has dropped from 100% to a couple of %, and those tend to be for soft filter actions applied to unmask, liquify filter or occasionally I'll use Nik plug-in's or clone stamp and healing brushes with pen sensitivity.
As I said up front, I'm not sure how useful this will be. I didn't feel a need for PhotoMechanic or iView, and my level of pain with Bridge/ACR/CS2 was easy for me to leave .... even Aperture 1.0 with less than ideal hardware was a significant productivity gain.
Working between Aperture and other apps. is likely to be tiresome. Working within Aperture becomes really smoooooth.
So, unless you absolutely must have can't live without the world will end some function of these, consider how you could make do with Aperture's nearest equivalent. Give a negative score to Aperture though. If a function is required, then can you export to/import from at a point in an Aperture centric workflow? If so, score as a negative to Aperture. (If you cannot see how to interface to Aperture, ask. If the answers still no, then you know.) Then, score the things that Aperture gives you as a benefit. If your tally is net positive (and I trust that it will), or a net negative, you've answered your question.

  • Problem with importing videos from Aperture

I was able to import videos from Aperture within FCPX.  However, when I tried to import some older videos, the following error message appeared:
    "No importable files
None of the selected files or folders can be imported.  Change the selection and try again."
I noticed that all the video files older than about three months didn't work, and all the newer files worked, regardless what camera it was from (D800, iPhone, m4/3 camera)
I opened up the aperture library package and compared the permission for one video file that I could import, and one that I couldn't.  They have the same permissions, so it isn't a permission issue.  I tried exporting the problem video from Aperture and importing it into FCPX, and it accepted it.
The other thing I've noticed that is for the files that I imported from Aperture library, the video files in the Original Media folder are only around 250 KB.  It seems that they are only aliases.  All the more reason I need to find a way to drag videos from Aperture into FCPX, as the files aren't duplicated.
Does anybody know a solution to this problem?
    Thanks a lot!

Aperture drag'n'drop export only creates reference movies (which can break!)
    Background of your issue:
If you simply drag your video file(s) from the Aperture window to the Desktop (in my case a MP4 from my Galaxy Nexus, the original having 70 MB), Aperture does not copy the master or the version file, but instead it creates a reference movie file, which is a very small video container file (in my case: MP4, 26 KB) with no AV-content but only a reference to your master video file in your Aperture library, ~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Masters/YYYY/MM/DD/YYYYMMDD-hhmmss/filename.
So by principle it acts like an "alias", but technically it is not a filesystem alias (filepath, ID within filesystem (inode), metadata), but a so called reference movie. If you meanwhile deleted/manipulated the master file from the Aperture Library, or changed something from the filepath (volume name, home directory name, etc) import in Final Cut Pro will fail of course, as it loads a mere reference movie, and fails to load the AV-content, as the master movie file cannot be found at the given filepath anymore.
Solution 1 (for the "tidy" users):
Make sure the filepath to your Aperture Library does not change (volume name, user name, custom library name), and hopefully Apple does not change their Aperture Library filepath scheme in future updates. Then the reference movie will remain pointing to a valid master file.
    Solution 2:
    In Aperture, select the file(s)
    File > Export Master (CMD-SHIFT-S)
Save file(s) to your desired destination
Import them into within Final Cut Pro
Of course this creates unnecessary duplicate content, which is specially painful with video files, which tend to be large.
    Solution 3 (advanced users):
Locate the master file (within the Aperture Library.aplibrary bundle) and import that in Final Cut Pro.
The import dialogue of many Mac OS X apps does not allow browsing into bundles.
A possible work around is to open the bundle in Finder (right click > Show package contents), locate the file, and then drag'n'drop it onto the import dialogue of Final Cut Pro.

  • Problems Uploading Book from Aperture

I am trying to upload a book from Aperture. It takes quite a while and then it just gives me an error message - A Connection Could Not Be Established At This Time.
My Internet connection is fine so I wondered if this was a problem with Apple's servers - is anyone else seeing the same?
    Thx

Working now. Must have been a problem with Apple over the weekend.

I just switched from Aperture to LR and PS CC.  My exported images suffer color loss?  How do I correct the issue?
I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark III in Adobe 1998 Color Space.  I've been exporting JPEGS for web with Color Space sRGB.

Does your issue have anything to do with switching from Aperture?
In other words, if you take a new photograph with your camera, and import it in Lightroom, then export it, is there still a problem?
Or is the problem somehow tied to transition from Aperture, or photos migrated from Aperture...?
I'm guessing the reason you brought up Aperture is that you did not have export "color loss" issues in Aperture, like you are having in Lightroom, but since you didn't say... (just want to be sure).

This support community is a bit new for me. Have read some old entries with the same problem but couldnt see any solutions. Libray shows all the songs ( over 2500) but I cant play any of them. Message is that itunes cant find the original.   ???? only difference is going from xp to windows 7 . can I put the songs from my ipod back on my computer maybe?

Go into windows explorer and find out where the music is now located - in Windows 7 you have libraries for documents, music, photos and video.
    iTunes is located:
    Music
    itunes
    iTunes Media
    music
If all the files are in that place it may just be that you have to amend a preference in iTunes:
    Edit
    Preferences
    Advanced
ensure   Keep itunes Media organised and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library are both ticked
Once ticked you will have a bit of a wait while iTunes re-organises the library but then your songs should all be playable again.
