Going From G4s to Duo 2 Core Questions

I'm going from 2 G4's to Duo 2 Cores (shipment to arrive early next week). Three questions to those who have already done it, to avoid problems:
1) I will import my data from the G4s to the new Macs via Target Disk Mode (no Migration to avoid bringing something over that might muck up the works).
Which computer should I boot into Target Disk Mode - the source (G4) or destination (Duo 2 Core)?
Should I boot into Target Disk Mode and then firewire connect, or firewire connect and then boot into TDM?
2) I currently use Office X (Word and Entourage) as my data staple; am upgrading with the purchase of the Duo 2 Cores to Office 2004.
How do I get my Office X Word and Entourage preferences (Normal Template; Address Book, etc) into Office 2004 once 2004 is loaded? Should I install the 2004 appliication onto the Duo 2 Cores, then copy over my Microsoft User Date from Office X (from the G4's to the new computers), then launch Office 2004 on the new computers and somehow import my prefernces; if so, how? If not, what's the best procedure?
3) I use Firefox as my main browser. I do a lot of public records research. Most public records are in PDF format. I currently use the PDF Browser Plug-in (private edition) for viewing. Is that a safe option for Intel Macs? If not, any alternatives suggested?
Lots of questions, but thanks in advance for any input and assistance!
Any other suggestions on a smooth transition will also be most appreciated!
Again - Thanks and Cheers!
iMac Flat Panel Mac OS X (10.4.8)
iMac CDRW

1) I connected my new MacBook to my turned of PowerBook while the MacBook was on. Then I turned on the PowerBook booting into FireWire Target Disk Mode. BTW, I copied Library folder from my PowerBook onto the MacBook's desktop. The rest I just copied directly into my new MacBook personal directory. IOW I opened up both Document folders and copied from PowerBook to MacBook. I was more careful about what I copied from the old Library folder and I did just a little at a time so if trouble developed I could remember what I'd just copied in and remove it. This minimized the number of programs I had to reserialize and configure.
2) This is a good question - I bought MacOffice and used it with the PowerBook. I don't remember the process of moving in - whether it was done automatically or whether I was prompted for where to import files from. I just remember it being pretty painless. Perhaps the safest method would be to install Office on the old G4 first and get it all sorted out there first.
3) There's an Intel updated version of the plug-in available - I'm using it.

Apple consider this product vintage so they won't perform any hardware service on it. You may have to look towards 3rd parties.

  • Question re. Ethernet cable going from HH3 to Mode...

    Guys,
Do any of you know whether you can use any Cat5e ethernet cable from the Red Infinity socket on the HH3 to the LAN1 port on the Openreach modem as opposed to the one with the red terminals provided by BT? I only ask as like most of you I'm sure, my HH3 and modem are no more than about 20cm apart so I'd prefer to use a much shorter cable than the one supplied.
And does that also apply to the RJ11 going from the Master Socket to the DSL port on the modem (i.e. will any RJ11 do)?
    Cheers in advance.

from the homehub to modem, any decent cat5/cat5a/cat6 cable will do. as for the rj11 cable to phone socket, if you know a good i.t. guru, he could knock you up a cat5 cable with rj11 connectors at each end to your specific length, or, if you don't know an i.t. guru, you could scout the net for the cable. I use such a cable and it is far superior to the one supplied by bt.
Also, if you feel competent & have the tools, you could do it yourself. i posted howto do this previously, so a quick search with my moniker should find it
    free your computer, use opensource
i'm a linux user & very happy about it

  • Question??  Backup Assistant - Going from BlackBerry to Droid

I am going from a BlackBerry Curve to a Droid X.  Do I need to use the Backup Assistant or can I connect the information on my Gmail account (Contacts etc) to the Droid X.
I have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and use this to backup my phone...do I really need to do anything or can I activate my new Droids?
    Thanks, Tim

I would think you have your contacts already on your online account. If yes then do this.....
    1. Go to Verizon Wireless and log into My Verizon.  If you do not already have a My Verizon login and password select the “register” link.
    2. On the My Verizon landing page select either “My Contacts” from the account actions on  the right side of the page, or the “Contacts” button at the top of the page..
    3. Export the .csv file:
    a. Select the contacts that you want to export. If you want to export the entire list use "Select All".
    b. Select the "Export Contacts" function.
    c. Select the option to export contacts in "CV (Outlook)" format.
    4. Save the exported .csv file to your computer.
    5. Go to mail.google.com and log in. You will need to register for an account if you do not already have one.
    6. Select “Contacts” from the menu on the left side of the screen. Once on the contact page select “Import” in the upper right hand corner.
    7. Follow system prompts to import your .csv file.
    8. Activate your Android device.
    9. Sign into your Gmail account on your DROID. Contacts will sync automatically over the air.

  • Please verify core duo vs. core 2 duo speed comparison

    Hi,
I was looking for RAM to upgrade my MacBook CoreDuo 512mb to 2gb, and found this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/MacBook/Testing/Memory_Benchmarks
If you go down, there is performance comparisons b/t core duo and core 2 duo, and between different size of rams. I am looking at photoshop result. Notice C2D 1gb is FASTER than CD 2gb.
Since I will be using Photo Editing Apps. to process RAW files, speed is my primary concern. Could you please verify this data? If this is true, I am going to consider selling my current MB and getting a new one with C2D.
    Thanks!

Performance comparisons vary from tests to tests. And even if you test the same machine 10 times, you will get 10 different results. But from looking at the data, it seems though that the differences are very minute.
Selling your CD MB to get a C2D MB would not be a smart investment for that small improvement in performance, but the decision is up to you. If you decide to upgrade since speed is your primary concern, why not opt for Macbook Pro?

  • Intel Core 2 Duo or Core Duo???

Greetings! I have a 17" MacBook Pro that I purchased last August 2006. How can I tell if it has the Intel Core 2 Duo or Core Duo processor?? Apparently, there is a difference in the maximum memory that can be installed: 3 GB for the Core 2 Duo and only 2 GB for the Core Duo. Any know how to determine the processor type?
    Thanks & God Bless!
    Rick

i was only half serious about the rumour sites thing.. actually you're the perfect example of someone that has the right attitude to making a computer purchase. you understand that all manufacturers including apple aren't about to start yelling from the rooftops that a machine will be replaced with a faster one coming up in a couple of weeks. it just makes no sense to freeze the sales of the current machine prematurely, and people know they can always pick up remaining stock of the outgoing model at a reduced price after the new one is announced. you've also stated that while the new machines seem a little faster (well duh what's new under the sun?), you're happy with the performance of the one you have, and it does what you need it to do.
I think it's only ever a good idea to keep the most casual eye on the rumour sites, just to get an inkling of any possible new developments. but it's pretty much a dumb idea to base your shopping on what they say. in my case, I waited for the core 2 duo machine because I happened to be looking to buy one literally just when is started making the tech news that the core 2 duo chips for laptops were making their way into machines, and some PC laptops were already shipping with them. it seemed the sensible thing to do to wait a couple of weeks before placing my order, and I was in a position where I could wait anyway. i also knew that I'd be waiting at least a couple of weeks if not more for any machine I ordered to be shipped because I was always going to order a custom configuration anyway. so in my case it paid off.
but I read a lot of people putting off buying a machine for frankly silly reasons, fed by the rumour sites. a lot of audio pro logic users (like myself) are fixated on the idea of waiting for the next generation intel portable chips because of a combination of some kind of power **** fed by the rumour sites. and also a lot of them are also PC users, and so they are terrified that whatever they buy now might be a bad choice because leopard is around the corner and it might change the ballgame, causing problems with machines bought earlier.. it can all be quite misleading and make you wait without a machine for no good reason. and then when you look at the intel info on what the next series of C2D chips will be, it's only a speed bump to 2.4Ghz above the 2.33 that it currently tops out at. I'm sure there are other enhancements too, but it's hardly earth-shattering. and then on top of that, there's just no way that leopard is going to have any issues at all, esp compared to vista, with recent machines, and probably not even much older ones too. in fact, sometimes it's a bad idea to buy a machine that comes pre-installed with the latest OSX because it has been the case in the past that the firmware on these machines doesn't allow them to retrograde to work with a previous OS version. this can be a big issue for some users! for example if you are an audio pro, and you use digidesign hardware, they are notorious for taking a long time to release drivers for new OS versions, and not only that, their previous drivers often just won't work at all with newer OS's until they release their newest driver, unlike other manufacturers whose drivers often survive the transition without requiring an update just to stay functional. so in cases like this, listening to the rumours too much and holding off on buying can actually be totally the wrong thing to do.
anyway, I've just had a little rant haven't I? glad you're happy with your machine, and for anyone else reading, I hope I've given a little perspective on the matter.

  • Java Development issue/differences between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo (??)

    Hi Everyone,
I am a Java developer that uses my 17" MBP Core Duo for all of my development. Lately, I've been trying to use both the Glassfish Application Server V2 (from Sun) and Maven 2.09 from the Apache project. I have configured identical scenarios on my MBP Core Duo and on a 15" MBP Core 2 Duo.
The scenario involves compiling and running some webservices (at least on the Core 2 Duo) in a local development environment. Both machines use the default JDK 1.5.0_13 installed on the machine.
On the 17" Core Duo, issuing a "mvn install" command produces the following error:

I have installed the same software versions and have the same configuration on a Windows desktop running XP SP2 and get the same successful result.
Is this an issue between the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo? I can't see that it is since I don't believe the hardware influences the software to that degree. However, I am at a loss for what is causing the issue and the Apache Maven list insists that there are developers that are using Maven successfully on OS X.
I really need to get past this issue, but I am at a loss. Please help.
    Thanks,

  • Why does my screen goes from bright (normal) to dim?

I hope someone can help.  My screen keeps going from bright (normal) to dim then back to normal .

It could be a short in your power adaptor cable, break or crack in the power jack that the power adaptor plugs into, a failing power inverter (small long thin circuit board in the screen that converts DC back to AC) or some unusual setting in the power setting for the laptop. I have no idea what that last one actual is but I am guessing. Look at the notebook and note which lights are on when it is bright. See if the external power light goes out when it goes dim. This happens when you go from plugged power to battery.  Try to run the notebook with the battery out of the system for a day and see if you still have the problem. Maybe the battery is starting to short out.

  • Going from 256GB to 80GB SSD

    Hello,
I'm going from my 256GB to an 80GB SSD, and I'll use an external for my file store. When I restore using time machine, do I have the option to pick and choose what I want to restore?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That depends on what you want to do. You have 4 options:
Restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Install OSX, then restore your settings, apps, users, and/or data via +Setup Assistant.+ See #19 in the FAQ Tip. Then download and install the "combo" update to get back to 10.5.8. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
Install OSX, set up one user and install the "combo" as above. Then use +Migration Assistant,+ per this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3322
Install OSX, set up one user and install the "combo" as above, then restore selected items from Time Machine. See #15 in the FAQ tip.
Without knowing just what you want to do, we can only advise that usually your best bet is to do the full system restore, then delete anything you don't want, rather than trying to pick and choose what you do want, especially with applications.

  • Going from EHP3 to EHP4

    Experts,
We already have ECC6.0Ehp3.  After installing  EHp3, we activated 2 business function sets in SFW5 and followed the normal processes to get this moved into the other clients.  No problem!
That was many months ago.  now, we are ready to do Ehp4 and that is my question.
Knowing that we are already on EhP3 and have already activated business function sets, eg ISU_UTIL_1 / ISU_UTIL_WASTE, etc.
So once we finished the install of EhP4 via the Enhancement Pack installer, will we need to go back to SFW5 and activate business function sets again?  We already have all the functionality we need from when we did the SFW5 after EHP3 install, I don't want to activate anything new, but I wonder if that is a requirement when going from one EHP to a new one?  If so, how do we keep from overwriting the config we already have?
I have fully read the following guides:
Note 337623 - Customizing after installation or upgrade
The specified item was not found.

But I still don't have an answer from these.  Any insite would be much appeciated.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hey Sunny,
Thanks again for following up, but I have seen this and fully read the note.  Let me be more specific:
Is there any one out there who has applied a previous ECC Enhancement Pack (like EHP3, then activated a business function set in SFW5 (like IS-util), then copied the customization to all clients....and THEN at a later date applied EHP4 ???
If so, after applying EHP4, did you AGAIN have to go into SFW5?  If not SFW5, did you have to use SCU0 to find additional features from existing business sets in client 000 and again copy that into the productive clients?
I know what the ambiguous documentation says, but when it comes down to REALLY doing this, I am still not clear.  Please don't bother cutting/pasting sections from the tech guide and SAP note I have already referenced in a previous post.  I have ready them....
    Maybe I'm over-thinking this.....
Also, what if I wanted to activate a complely new business function set?  After activating in SFW5, has anyone done this in a way that copies the new functionality in 000 but does not stomp on the previous customization from other activations?

  • U460 Brightness Control Issues (Only goes from Brightest to Darkest)

My Ideapad U460 is having problems with the brightness level. It will only switch from the Brightest to Darkest brightness level...meaning it's either too bright or too dim. I've tried switching my power options too but everytime i try to adjust the brightness either by just clicking the "Fn" button to adjust the brightness or changing it on the Control Panel's Brightnes Options by moving the cursor down the brighness scale (it STILL only goes from the lowest to highest in brightness).
Please help! This is quite frustrating since it goes from being WAY TOO BRIGHT to WAY TOO DARK. Also, I recently had my screen changed because it was malfunctioning. Everything is fine in terms of my memory and just the laptop itself but the brightness issues are becoming unbearable. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR THE HELP

BT Hub broad band light goes from blue to amber whenever phone rings and temporarily drops internet.  After a short period of time it resets itself.  I use a VPN to work from home into office and it drops this as well which is very frustrating when on conference calls.
Spoke to BT last year and advised fit a high grade ADSL filter which we did and problem still exists
    Any ideas??

is there any reason you started a new subject for what appears to be the same problem a previous posts.  from previous the line is ok and broadband ok as long as you are not using VPN when phone rings - is that correct?
