Going from Intel to AMD

Hi , ill go straight to the point , and i plz beg if someone can help me with this. As now , i have an
Intel p4 of 1.6 ghz (Intel D845WN motherboard)
MSI Geforce 4 ti 4600 of 128 megs (THE CARD IS 4X)
512 MB of Ram (SDRAM pc133 -DIMM)
SB LIVE 5.1!
20 GB HD
Well the point is i want to "migrate" to an AMD based system cause they tell me they perform games very well and are cheaper , but im kinda new on AMD info , and i want to know which MSI motherboard (model) would be the right choice(in other words i should buy) for an ATHLON 2200+ and if that motherboard accepts my old SDRAM memory.
Specially i wanted to put enphasis on these 3 models of MSI motherboards which are the ones available on my country (i live on peru):
- MSI KT33 ULTRADDR AGP ATX
- MSI KT33 ULTRA ARU DDR AGP ATX
- MSI KT400 ULTRA-ARU DDR AGP ATX
Well , so which of them is the most appropiate cause the sellsmen told me that i have to buy a kt400 in order to get "the best" from my 2200+ , cause if i get the kt33 it ll only perforom at 1800+ , but i found it kinda tricky , so i wanted to check that here. Also which of this motherboards support my 4x card? , and what kind of memory does they support , does any of them support my old SDRAM?if so is it recomendable for my new processor?

With SDRAM you're seriously limited to the boards you can use. PC-133 memory for an Athlon XP 2200+ would probably be best suited in a K7T-Turbo 2. Neither the KT266, KT3 series, or KT4 series will support SDRAM, since all are now DDR based. If you wish to use your SDRAM (which will seriously compromise performance, although it will still probably be faster than the P4) I'd recommend the MSI K7T-Turbo 2. I've run it for almost a year now in my old system (before upgrading to DDR with a KT4 Ultra). If you're looking for more performance, I'd invest in either a KT3 or KT4 (not many advantages to KT4 at this point, but offers more expandability for the future), and invest in some good quality DDR memory (PC2100 [266mhz], PC2700 [333mhz] or PC3200 [400mhz]).
Note- While the K7T Turbo 2 doesn't natively support the 2200+, it will with the most recent bios update- Information on K7T Turbo 2 Bios

Going from NVIDIA to AMD cards

My old 9800GT died and I decided to buy a R9 270x, but I'm not really sure how to switch drivers the correct way. Do I only remove everything related to NVIDIA, turn off my computer and install the AMD card, then turn my computer back on again and install the AMD driver? http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/d … x%20x86_64

I am very happy with my R9 270X using open source drivers playing Dota 2 and Left 4 Dead. I do have trouble with the DisplayPort where the EDID seems to be messed up and I have to manually set the resolution via xrandr, so I keep her hooked up with HDMI. I am hoping for a solution in a new kernel release.

Time Machine restore from Intel Macbook to G5 PPC 2.0ghz not working?

Not sure if it has to do with the fact that I'm going from Intel to PPC or if my MacBook had all the latest Apple updates and the PPC does not (no network connect at the moment.) It can see all the backups in my Time Machine drive when running the Time Machine app, but when I go to Restore From Time Machine Backup in the Utilities menu on the Leopard boot, or when I tried to create my user account for the first time in Leopard, it would not see my Time Machine backups on the other drive.
So am I thinking it's becuse I'm going from Intel to PPC or do I need the latest updates from Apple on my PPC or could it be something else?
I could just manually copy all the files over, but I'd like to avoid that, as I liked all my settings &tc. Thoughts?

Welcome to Apple Discussions:
AFAIK, you can only restore a TM backup onto an identical (or nearly so) computer. I don't think the Intel backup will work at all on a PPC. The drive partitions schemes are incompatible - GUID vs APM and none of the drivers or other hardware-related software components will work, not to mention many of the Intel-only apps.
The best you can do in install Leopard on the PPC and see if you can migrate from the TM backup.

Going from G4 to Intel

I am going from a G4 machine to a new macbook. Will my microsoft office 04' for Mac software work on the intel machine or do I need new software?

i know for a fact that office 04 will work on a macbook since it is the very version that i am using on both intel and ppc machines. so no, you dont need new software. but it is highly recommended that when switching from ppc to intel that you reinstall things like office and any other third party software just incase they have an intel native version mainly because ppc versions will use more ram because they also require the use of a program called rosetta to run them on intel.

Can't print from Intel Mac w/Snow Leopard to HP 2600

Can't print from Intel Mac w/Snow Leopard to HP 2600. Upgraded from OS 10.4 and printer showed on printer list along with an Epson scanner. but continually shows printer as offline. I finally deleted the HP Color Laserjet 2600n from the printer list. When I attempted to re-install it, it doesn't find the printer at all. I haven't attempted to use the scanner. I also went to HP and downloaded the driver, no luck. I've restarted the computer multiple times, tried it with the printer on, and printer off, as well as pulled the usb cable in and out both ends. No error message on the printer display and it gpes through normal warmup until it shows the green light. I run software update and it shows no updates needed. Help!

When you press print the first window is pretty basic.
When you select print on that the next window should have an advanced option.
Click that and see if any of the options in the 3rd dropdown box allow you to specify the 'paper tray'.

In this new windaow, click "advanced", go to "paper type/quality" and choose " best" and a photo paper. Then you will be able to choose a paper source (photo tray).
Once you have these settings, under presets do "save as", and you can choose the preset instead of going to advanced.
If you have the latest software and drivers downloaded from HP, this will work.

Linux on Intel vs AMD

Gurus,
Have a question regarding running 64 bit oracle on intel vs amd (RHEL). We are currently running on AMD and have been happy. We are seeing a hardware switch away from amd in my co. Does anyone know if the performance of the Xeon 64bit oracle is on par with AMD. I thought the intel had "extensions" that did not have the same performance in what is seen from amd. We are planning to move to quad core blades for a grid env.

I don't think the "pureness" of AMD's quad core is an issue. The shared cache in the Intel chips is only an issue if it becomes a problem -and I've not seen that happen. Intel chips scale just fine to the high levels I've needed them (I don't claim that's as high as others might need them to go).
On the other hand, I have seen the integrated memory controller (which makes the AMD chips true NUMA processors) be the source of massive problems for Oracle software (which includes new NUMA-optimised tweaks... and thus a slew of new bugs). In particular, 64-bit Oracle on NUMA AMD chips forgot to cache data in a manner accessible by all CPUs, so performance took a complete dive: it was as though you had a db_cache_size of 0. Then you couldn't lock the SGA into real memory: trying to do so locked up the entire server for minutes at a time.
True enough, those bugs were for AMD chips and Windows 2003, so it might be irrelevant for a Linux deployment, but still: nasty tastes linger.
Personally, unless I was forced to, I wouldn't touch an AMD chip these days. The Core 2 architecture scales and performs much better than anything AMD has got.

Repeated error from Intel integrated Graphics card in my brand-new B320

Hi
I am getting repeated errors from the Intel Integrated Graphics card (on the Intel i3 chip as I understand it) in my brand-new B320.
I checked via a tool from Intel that my drivers were up-to-date (version 15.22.1.2361).
I checked via Device Manager Update Drivers that my driver was up-to-date.
I attempted to uninstall and re-install my driver BUT the uninstall reverted me to a VGA Adapter (so my screen was then running in a low res 800x600 mode!) and I could not even then see the Intel Integrated Graphics card in Device Manager to be able to re-install the driver against (even if I ran scan for new hardware): I had to restore to a System Restore Point - so the problem has of course come back.
I have even had one error where the screen then went completely blank and nothing would bring it back: I had to power off the PC (Ouch!)
PLEASE advise how I rectify this incredibly frustrating problem step-by-step.

And could not find any driver with the version 15.22.1.2361 for the Intel Integrated Graphic Card. Where did you get that version ?

Going From G4s to Duo 2 Core Questions

I'm going from 2 G4's to Duo 2 Cores (shipment to arrive early next week). Three questions to those who have already done it, to avoid problems:
1) I will import my data from the G4s to the new Macs via Target Disk Mode (no Migration to avoid bringing something over that might muck up the works).
Which computer should I boot into Target Disk Mode - the source (G4) or destination (Duo 2 Core)?
Should I boot into Target Disk Mode and then firewire connect, or firewire connect and then boot into TDM?
2) I currently use Office X (Word and Entourage) as my data staple; am upgrading with the purchase of the Duo 2 Cores to Office 2004.
How do I get my Office X Word and Entourage preferences (Normal Template; Address Book, etc) into Office 2004 once 2004 is loaded? Should I install the 2004 appliication onto the Duo 2 Cores, then copy over my Microsoft User Date from Office X (from the G4's to the new computers), then launch Office 2004 on the new computers and somehow import my prefernces; if so, how? If not, what's the best procedure?
3) I use Firefox as my main browser. I do a lot of public records research. Most public records are in PDF format. I currently use the PDF Browser Plug-in (private edition) for viewing. Is that a safe option for Intel Macs? If not, any alternatives suggested?
Lots of questions, but thanks in advance for any input and assistance!

1) I connected my new MacBook to my turned of PowerBook while the MacBook was on. Then I turned on the PowerBook booting into FireWire Target Disk Mode. BTW, I copied Library folder from my PowerBook onto the MacBook's desktop. The rest I just copied directly into my new MacBook personal directory. IOW I opened up both Document folders and copied from PowerBook to MacBook. I was more careful about what I copied from the old Library folder and I did just a little at a time so if trouble developed I could remember what I'd just copied in and remove it. This minimized the number of programs I had to reserialize and configure.
2) This is a good question - I bought MacOffice and used it with the PowerBook. I don't remember the process of moving in - whether it was done automatically or whether I was prompted for where to import files from. I just remember it being pretty painless. Perhaps the safest method would be to install Office on the old G4 first and get it all sorted out there first.
3) There's an Intel updated version of the plug-in available - I'm using it.

U460 Brightness Control Issues (Only goes from Brightest to Darkest)

My Ideapad U460 is having problems with the brightness level. It will only switch from the Brightest to Darkest brightness level...meaning it's either too bright or too dim. I've tried switching my power options too but everytime i try to adjust the brightness either by just clicking the "Fn" button to adjust the brightness or changing it on the Control Panel's Brightnes Options by moving the cursor down the brighness scale (it STILL only goes from the lowest to highest in brightness).
Please help! This is quite frustrating since it goes from being WAY TOO BRIGHT to WAY TOO DARK. Also, I recently had my screen changed because it was malfunctioning. Everything is fine in terms of my memory and just the laptop itself but the brightness issues are becoming unbearable. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR THE HELP

How do I update the Graphics driver and Bios of my system? Are both updates through the link you provide?
Also, how do I know which Graphics Drive to download (I attached the different drivers I see below)? I have Windows 7 on my Ideapad U460. And where do I update the Bios?

Flash player freeze a lot when playing Youtube videos fullscreen from Linux, but plays videos ok from Windows (CPU: AMD APU).
When playing video in default size it's OK (windows and Linux), but when setting video in full screen, on Linux there's troubles: video is hashed (freeze every 3 seconds).
CPU : AMD APU Athlon 5350.
OS : Linux Mint 17 (64 bits).
Browser: Firefox v31 (on Linux and Windows 7).
Linux AMD video driver : Catalyst v14.4 (amd-catalyst-14-4-rev2-linux-x86-x86-64-may6.zip)
Linux Flash polayer version: 11,2,202,400 (deteced from https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ )

Hi s, well congrats on getting your brother's computer up and running. On your system, you have all correct Flash Player
files for IE and FF, as well as the SWO and SWF.
Since the Install of Flash Player, have you installed any programs that would have added any ActiveX Controls, or any other add ons or plug-ins?
Have you had an opportunity to see if your brother's computer has the issue you have when watching the same websites?
Are you using any ad-block in FF(Firefox) or any pop up blocker software installed? I can't imagine updating to FP version 10 alone would cause this.
Is this happening only on the BBC website? Does what you watch come thru the BBC website or youtube directly?
We have your brother's computer to use to determine what is going on. If he is able to see the BBC website and what you
are having problems with, then we can rule out the website.
Other browser add ons, anti-virus programs, etc. affect the browser. Even tho, no problem with vs 9. Sometimes updates
can have an affect, even with Windows as we all know:-)

I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. Data not going from active data table to new data table -DSO activation iss

Hi Experts,
Data is going from DSO1 to DSO2. I see some of the records are getting missed in DSO 2 which are supposed to come.
There is start routine from DSO1 TO DSO2 and as per the start routine some records should come but they are getting missed.
Apart from that..to DSO 2 there are 4 other DSO sending data.
