Going from Iphoto 9.5.1 mavericks to Yosemite photos

I am thinking about updating my imac to the new Yosemite, I really want to experience the new photos app. I do have many questions and concerns when it comes to the major migration. I have a precious iPhoto library that I do not want messed up. Right now I am running mavericks latest edition and iPhoto 9.5.1. My app store shows no update for iPhoto. It used to have it as an incompatible update but now it is gone. I know I need to update my iPhoto to 9.6.1 for a successful migration of my iPhoto library to the photos app. It shows iPhoto in the purchased list but the date on it is from November 2011, and there still is an update button, would I update it from there, after Yosemite update? The question is what is the exact process for this update so I wont lose all or any pictures and family videos from iPhoto? Its about 10 years worth of photos (220 gb) obviously I would back up my library on an exHD. But then, would I update my Imac to Yosemite? After update to Yosemite would I then open up the "app store" and hopefully find iPhoto as an update and update it to 9.6.1??? And then after that is updated, would I then open it up and make sure its all there, then open up "photos" app and let the migration begin to unfold??  I just am very worried that something might get messed up between iPhoto 9.5.1 and the new photos app, plus Im not sure how to update iPhoto if It is no longer available to update. why would apple do that?? I need some serious help and direction here. shoot!

The new Photos.app requires MacOS X 10.10.3. So you will need to update to he new system.
First of all, make sure you can revert to your current system before you upgrade. Make a full Time Machine backup, just in case. That will let you revert your Mac to the way  it is now, see:  OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
know I need to update my iPhoto to 9.6.1 for a successful migration of my iPhoto library to the photos app.
Once you upgrade to Yosemite, you should be able to install iPhoto 9.6.1, since iPhoto is showing on your Purchases tab of the App Store.
After the update to MacOS X 10.10.3,  sign into the App Store and install iPhoto from the Purchases tab of the AppStore. If the update does not work, move the  iPhoto application to the Trash (don't empty it). Read the Purchases page of the App Store by pressing ⌘R, then reinstall iPhoto.
Before you upgrade to Photos, prepare your Photos library. Some features are not yet supported in Photos.
You cannot add locations to photos in the Photos.app, so add all missing locations to your photos while still using iPhoto.
You cannot batch change titles and captions. If you still have titles to add, do that, while running iPhoto.
Photos has no events, only albums. So your smart albums based on smart rules for events will not work. You may want add keywords to the photos in these albums, so you can define a new rule based on keywords.
Apparently Photos has a bug, that lets it show the times for photos taken in a different timezone incorrectly.  If you have many photos taken in different timezones, you may want to wait with the migration, until this has been fixed.

Open your iPhoto Library, go to that particular album and verify that you can view the full sized version of each image by double clicking on them.  Report back with the results.

  • Compressed image going from iPhoto to iDVD

Why is it that the image gets compressed—like a mild version of CinemaScope opening credits on 4:3 TV—when I export from iPhoto to iDVD? The QT looks fine when I play it in QT but as soon as I bring it into to iDVD (or DVD Studio Pro), it gets squeezed. Is there a workaround?
    Thanks!

I am curious about this as well. I can scan or import photo into iPhoto and they look perfect. Matter of fact, I know these are high quality images because I scan them in at 300dpi or larger and verify image settings in photoshop. They ALWAYS look good in iPhoto/Photoshop and in preview mode from iMovie but once burned in iDVD they come out like a low res preview in iPhoto - I keep waiting for it to bring in the high quality version but this never happens?

  • How to upload from iphoto to icloud in title order using photo share (not photo stream)?

I can get the albums within iphoto (V9.6) into title order, however when they are uploaded to icloud (photo share, not photo stream) they lose that order. Can the photo shared images on the icloud web link be uploaded/or organised into the order that I have painstakingly created?

December 2014 Case Resolved by midnorthcoast
I found Old Toad's remedy presented by Tedious Tom here Keeping desired order of photos when sharing on iCloud
After labelling (titling) each of the 300 or so images carefully in numerical order I wanted to be sure that that's how they would be viewed once uploaded from iPhoto to Photo Share (not Photo Stream).  Note that I didn't want the ensuing iCloud weblink to be automatically emailed to others. I wanted to email the link personally. I find the automatic invitation's presentation confusing in regard to having to register to view the images or simply clicking the less obvious link. Plus I wanted the invitation to be more personal.
    Here's how I did it:
Transferred images from Finder to their own album within iPhoto
With the album open, made sure images were in title order,  View/Sort Photos/By Title
    Selected all images
Followed Old Toad's advice (except I changed from 1 minute to 1 second),  Photos/Batch Change/Set Date/Add 1 second between each photo
    Shared with iCloud,  Share/iCloud
Dialogue box comes up, Clicked on New photo stream
Another dialogue box,  filled in one of my email addresses (not my iCloud identity), unticked Subscribers Can Post, ticked Public Website, clicked Share
Opened iCloud within iPhoto and waited until finished uploading
Highlighted the album, clicked Info, copied the weblink shown under Public Website and pasted into personal email invitations

  • Best Practice, Going from iPhoto to Aperture 3

I'm looking for advice on a best practice of moving from an iPhoto Library to Aperture 3. That is, if I even should do so.
I know that I can keep the photos in place (in iPhoto) and still access them from Aperture. (Or import just selected photos as needed.) Assuming disk space isn't an issue, would it not be better to import all of the iPhoto library into Aperture and only use Aperture going forward?
Is there a reason I might want to consider another path?
Any other setup advice for about to be first time users would be appreciated. Anything from your experiences you'd wish you had done differently etc.
    Thanks

Welcome to Aperture. The question of whether to use just one photo app be it iPhoto or Aperture or to try and use both has been covered here extensively.
The short answer is to pick one of the applications and commit to it. Trying to use both in some combination is at best going to make your life miserable and at worst, well whats worst than a miserable life?

Yes you can keep the photos in iPhotos library, you can move them into Aperture library or you could move them to some other place on your disk and have Aperture access them from there. Again if your going to use Aperture then the best advice is to only use it.
Any other setup advice for about to be first time users would be appreciated. Anything from your experiences you'd wish you had done differently etc.
Take the time to become familiar with the different possible configurations of the Aperture library. The User manual is a good place to start, they did a good job explaining it all. And of course use this list, there are may good posts if you search for them, and many good people willing to offer advice.

  • Going from iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 6 - caveats?...anyone?

I have iPhoto 4.0.3 and am seriously considering iLife06. Aside from the usual smartness of backing up all 1,500+ photos first, will it really be as simple as installing iLife06 or should I just as soon leave it all well enough alone ans stick with iPhoto4?

    Hi,
I just did exactly that upgrade, 4->6, on Saturday. I've had no problems whatsoever. I have a huge iPhoto library, something like 17,000 photos and ~39 GB of data, so I was naturally worried, but I'm happy to say that so far, not a single problem, and vastly improved performance.
All I did beforehand was backup my entire library to an external hard drive (I keep rolling backups regularly as well, but I made a complete, new backup just to be extra cautious.) I also then dismounted and disconnected that external drive, just to further safeguard my data. I then did a general clean up & permissions repair of my system and photo drives. I use the tool called "Cocktail" to do the cache cleaning, permissions repair, and such, but the permissions repair could also be done 'manually' using disk utility. I further used disk utility to just do a 'verify disk', which showed no problems with my photo library drive.
I think this is pretty much ordinary prep work for any significant upgrade, and if you're confused about any of it, you can certainly find lots of other posts about exactly how to do any of these steps. I think the two significant ones, really, are "Verify Disc" (and repair, if indicated), and "Repair Permissions". Consensus seems to be those two are critical.
Anyway, after all that was done, I put the iLife DVD in and just ran the normal upgrade. Once it was done, I launched iPhoto and let it go. It churned for quite a while -- it reorganizes the photo storage into a different folder hierarchy, and creates new thumbnails, so that took a while. Once it was all over with, iPhoto is working great, with no problems detected so far at all.
As part of the process, it also found a few hundred "orphaned" photos, and it asked me what to do with them, so I had it put them in a new album, just so I could see what they were. It looks like they were mostly photos I had deleted; one theory I have is that they were somehow orphaned when iPhoto 4 crashed on me -- which it did multiple times over the years.
I'm not sure what the previous poster was referring to by "Messy." It does re-organize the photos from the old date-sorted folder structure to a new Original/Modified and segregated by Film Roll structure. I don't ever muck around within the iPhoto storage hierarchy, so this has all been totally transparent to me, although I did have a peek just to see how it is implemented. I think this is a part of a new option to have iPhoto leave your photos where they are rather than copying them into your library location (which in principle should allow photo libraries to span multple discs, but I haven't verified that part.) So while others are considering the re-org to be a disaster, I look at it as a good thing. All the film rolls and photo albums I had in iPhoto 4 transferred flawlessly to iPhoto 6, and that's all I really care about.
So far, I'm thrilled with the upgrade. iPhoto 4 had gotten frustratingly slow to use - I was so tired of watching the rainbow spinner! 6 is super quick and smooth, and the editing tools are greatly enhanced. I played with the book, calendar, and iWeb export, but haven't actually followed through with any purchases yet. I did export a few photos and upload them, with no problems.
    Good luck!

  • HT204570 Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. I the error message from iPhotos after the so called upgrade to Photos which left me with a blank screen

Photos upgrade a disaster. No images appear in Photos. Able to re-establish all images in iPhoto only to have the app crash after uploading new photos from iPhone. Impossible to reload photo library as it needs 161 GB of space. The non functioning Photos library is 107 GB and the original iPhotos library from which it was created is 118 GB. I only have 146 GB available on this 1 TB drive but I am reluctant to trash Photos library in case iPhotos is truly damaged.

    And your question is?

  • Trouble setting an album from iphoto as screensaver. It says no photos exist in the album and yet they are clearly there.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • HT204022 How do I delete photos on my phone that were synced in from iPhoto? I do not want these photos on my phone!

This is what the website says to do:
    On an iOS 7 device
In the Photos app, tap Shared at the bottom of the screen, then tap Streams at the top of the screen.
Tap the shared stream you want to remove, tap People, then tap Unsubscribe (if you’re a subscriber) or Delete Photo Stream (if you’re the owner).
You can also tap Shared, tap Edit, tap the Remove button on the left side of the shared stream you want to remove, then tap Unsubscribe (if you’re a subscriber) or Delete (if you’re the owner).
However, when I go into my photos app, there is nothing that says "shared" at the bottom of the screen.

    unsync via itunes
plug device into computer - open itunes- click name of device click photos- uncheck all photos you want to remove- sync or apply at bottom

  • Unable to sync photos from iPhoto

Got an 8GB iPod Touch yesterday. I can sync everything except my photos from iPhoto. When I go to the Photo tab in iTunes, I place a tick in the check-box that says "Sync photos from:" and then I select iPhoto from the Combo-box. There are 2 radio buttons but only "All photos and albums" is available... "Selected Albums" is greyed out. The box below the radio buttons is also grey and has no entries.
If I try to sync "All photos and albums" I get an error message on my computer that reads: "The iPod [iPod name] cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
Software updates have all been applied, I have restored my iPod, have verified and fixed file permissions, etc. I have rebuilt the iPhoto library (Command-Option). Both iTunes and iPhoto have been working fine, with no other problems. I am using iLife '08 so I am using iPhoto '08 (version 7.1 (347)).
Has anyone any experience with the problem? I'm thinking that my next step is to reinstall iPhoto/iTunes but I would much rather not have to do that... any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Bill
P.S. I can sync photos from my desktop, just not from iPhoto '08.
P.P.S. My 5th gen video iPod can sync photos from my iPhoto library!

    Hi Damon,
Thanks for the update and the suggestion of trying a new user account... I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Well, you will not be too surprised to hear that with a new user account the photos synced no problem.
That leaves me with an iPhoto library rebuild on my hands. The Apple provided rebuild didn't resolve my issue when I tried it last week. So I will need to do a manual rebuild... something which I have done once before but vowed never to do again as I lost hundreds of hours of work organising and tagging my photos... something which I have invested considerable time in recovering and don't want to lose them again.
With Leopard around the corner, I will be performing a clean install of the new OS on a fresh HDD within the month, so I am going to recreate my iPhoto library that way... rather than invest time now only to see it wasted later.
Thanks once again for the pointers to those Apple docs... most useful.
    Kind regards,
    William

  • Creating DVD from iPhoto Slideshow with music

I'm trying to create a DVD of a slideshow with music that was created previously in iPhoto and then "Shared with iDVD". The .m4v file located in Pictures> iPhoto Slideshows is not accessible in iDVD. The only way I can make it work is to spend the hour or so required to start from scratch by clicking "Share with iDVD" from an open iPhoto slideshow, thus creating a .m4v file and then going directly to the iDVD menu that's automatically opened at the end of the "Share with iDVD" process. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the forums.
When I'm going from iPhoto to iDVD with a slideshow, I get good results by Exporting from iPhoto to a large-sized Quicktime movie. I can preview the video and music, and if I'm happy, I can then just drop the Quicktime file onto the iDVD menu area (not into a drop zone, that's just eye candy). It's been a reliable process for me.

  • Will my previously sync'd Flickr photos (from iPhoto) get removed from Flickr

    Hi,
I am very nervous of using the new Photos App and losing all my previously sync'd Flickr Photos that I configured from iPhoto - some of them have thousands of views / comments and fav's that I would hate to lose.
My photo library has been migrated to Photos App now, so I presume that as long as I don't fire up iPhoto again, I should be fine - as once the photos are sync'd to Flickr from iPhoto then as long as iPhoto doesn't try and remove them it should be fine and it can't do that if you don't start it up.
My concern is what happens when I try and share a photo to Flickr from the new Photos App - is this going to reset all my photos that have been previously shared to Flickr (and hence lose the previously uploaded ones from iPhoto) or will it just share additional photos as a new individual photos? It seems whereas iPhoto ran a complex Sync type relationship with Flickr, the Photos App Sharing to Flickr is much more basic.
Can anyone put my mind at rest because I would be mortified to end up losing my Flickr Photos?
    Rgds
