Going From Ipod Touch to iPhone 4

After having used an iPod Touch for the last three years, I am purchasing an iPhone 4. I understand that when I first hook up my iPhone 4 to iTunes I will be offered the option of syncing (migrating) all my iPod Touch data and setting to the iPhone or recognizing the iPhone as a distinct device. Though essentially transferring all my data and apps to the iPhone is attractive, what happens the next time I attempt to sync the iPod Touch with iTunes? Will I go through the same dance and will it be repeated every time I plug in one then the other until such time as I relent and recognize two devices? Perhaps it would actually be simpler to do the migration and set up the Touch from scratch rather than vice versa. What do you think of that approach? Your response may be altered after you read the next paragraph.
The other issue is the apps. If I elect to go the two device route, which is what I am inclined to do, is there a way I can easily move the apps from the iPod Touch to the iPhone or will that require reinstalling them on the iPhone. I don't have a lot of apps, so that isn't a big concern. What is a concern is whether having purchased some apps for the iPod Touch, will I have to re-purchase them for the iPhone even though I am using the same account?
I would appreciate any comments on these matters.
Bill

So if I understand you, even if I choose to set up as new, I can still load any or all of the apps or other content that is currently on the Touch on subsequent syncs.
Yes, but the content is in your itunes library. That's where you make the choice as to what content to put on each device.
Why would someone choose new over restore? Would it just be a matter that there's a lot of stuff on the Touch I don't necessarily want to put on the new iPhone now and I'd just as soon choose what I want rather than just take it all?
Most people who restore from backup do so because they are replacing their current device with a new device & want to maintain all of their current data on the new device. If you're gonna keep both, you may want to setup as new, but again, the choice is yours.

If you sign in to your Apple ID then your apps will be visible by clicking the "purchased" tab at the bottom of the screen.
Music you've purchased from Apple will appear automatically if you sign in to your account. Other music you'll need to download from your PC assuming you're not subscribed to iTunes Match.

  • How do I copy music (personal & purchased) from iPod Touch to iPhone 5c?

I have 464  songs on my iPod Touch 4th gen; however, only the 194 songs I purchased from the iTunes store show up in the iTunes Library on my Mac.  Accordingly only the purchased (194) songs are being backed up to the Cloud.  I recently purchased an iPhone 5c and was able to load what was in the Cloud.  I would, however, like to be able to access ALL of my music (i.e., all 464 songs on my iPod Touch) on my iPhone.  How do I get the 270 songs (not in the Cloud) onto my iPhone 5c?
If this can't be done within iTunes, is there freeware available for this purpose?  I downloaded an application called "iExplorer" (from Macroplant) only to discover that this "free download" is not, in fact, free to use, but costs $34.95.  I only want to transfer files from my iPod Touch one time; hence, $34.95 is a costly one-time fix, especially if free/less expensive options are available.  Thanks, in advance, for any help others may be able to provide.

To copy non-iTunes purchases you need a third-party program. Try the free iFunBox

  • Can't get Contacts/Calendar to transfer from iPod Touch to iPhone 3Gs

Just got the new iPhone 3Gs, and I have an iPod Touch (1st gen). I chose to sync manually because I didn't want my son's apps on my iPhone, but when I tried to sync my contacts and calendar from the iTouch to the iPhone, I get no contacts. How can I transfer my contacts and calendar from my iTouch to my iPhone? Thanks!

You need to sync them from iTunes on your computer to your phone
In iTunes on your computer click on tones in left column and make sure your ringtones are there.  Plug in your phone to computer with USB cable.  Click on phone name I left column. Click on the tone tab on the right of iTunes screen and then select sync all tones and then click on apply or sync at the bottom right of iTunes screen

  • Transfer applications and settings from iPod touch to iPhone

    Hi all,
Currently, I have an iPod Touch. I have bought applications and I have configured some applications on it.
I am quite interested to buy the last version of the iPhone. But before buying it, I would like to know if it is possible to transfer the applications and the settings from the iPod Touch to the iPhone.
If it is possible, do you know how to do it? Restoring the back up of the iPod? I don't options about that in iTunes.
    Thank you for your help.
    Damien

First, be sure all your applications are included in your iTunes library. (iTunes > File > Transfer purchases from XXX's iPod Touch).
The application data is not included in the app, but in your ipod Touch backup file.
You can upgrade one device with the backup from a different type of device; most settings will transfer to the new device. See this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

  • Swapping from ipod touch to iphone 3g. please help!

my dad wants to swap his iphone with my ipod touch.
i want to transfer my songs to his iphone and vise-versa for his.
we each have our own laptop.
so do i just plug-in my dad's iphone to my PC so i can transfer my songs???
    please help

i'd hold on until someone confirms this, but i think you just restore both with the backup from the other one.
plug in your iPod to his computer, click restore, when the option to restore to backup comes up, click that.
then plug the iPhone to your laptop, and do the same.

  • How do I transfer data from ipod touch to iphone?

I have an ipod touch and would like to transfer my data to a new iPhone.  I also need to know how to create a new library on itunes on the PC so I don't mix my info up with my sister's library. Thanks!

Move your existing iTunes Library that you use to sync your iPod to a new Library. This can be on your sister's computer or another one. Then, sync your iPod with that library.

  • Question about transferring apps from iPod touch to iPhone 5

I currently own a 3rd generation iPod Touch. If I buy an iPhone 5, can I download all the apps purchased for my iPod Touch to the iPhone using the same iTunes account?

Yep.  There is no limit to the number of iPods, iPads, and iPhones you can sync to one iTunes library, computer, or iTunes account.

  • Is it better to register iPhone on iTunes or restore backup from iPod Touch

I just got an iPhone 3gs. When I plug it into computer USB and iTunes is open, iTunes asks me if I want to register it as new iPhone or if I want to restore from my last iPod Touch backup. I'm not sure which one I should do, because I actually do want to transfer all the apps from my iPod Touch to my phone as well. So if I choose restore from backup, all the apps would be placed on the phone, correct? But I'm not sure if iTunes will or will not recognize my phone as a phone afterwards. Will it recognize it as the iPod Touch after that?
    I basically need to know:
    A) If I should register or restore from backup
    B) How to transfer apps from iPod Touch to iPhone [I did already transfer all purchases to iTunes from iPod Touch]
    C) How do I transfer contacts from Outlook to my iPhone?
    Any help is MUCH appreciated!

set it up as a new device.

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How can I transfer my music from ipod nano to iphone?

    hi,
i'm seriously considering buying an iphone. but before i do, i just have a couple of questions:
    1. How can I transfer my music from ipod nano to iphone?
    2. Will there be an iphone with higher memory capacity than 16gb? If so, when will it be out. (If there will be memory sizes of ipod similar to ipod classic, then i think it's better if i wait a little longer considering that there's only little difference in the price).
    Thank you!!

I don't believe there will be an iPhone with storage capacity equivalent to the iPod Classic anytime soon - at least not within the next month, or even this year or the next.
The iPod Classic has a hard drive. The iPod Touch and iPhone have Flash storage. Flash storage is more expensive than the hard drive equivalent, but the cost for Flash storage is coming down - supply an demand is probably helping this. The iPod Touch has double the storage capacity of the largest iPhone storage capacity since the iPod Touch doesn't include a cell phone - the case has more room for two 16GB Flash drives. More than likely there will be a 32GB iPhone at some point, but I believe it will be a while before we see a 64GB iPhone or larger approaching the storage capacity that is available with an iPod Classic.
