Going to buy but should I import/embed or reference my iphoto library?
I have a complex mixed bag of photo situations. I have photos on my hard drive in Finder.
I have a few iPhoto libraries as well. And I want to avoid duplicates.
Should I import all my photos into Aperture and archive/delete my iPhoto libraries or should I keep iPhoto around and just reference the files in both my iPhoto and my Finder. Then is there a good tool to help with getting rid of duplicates?
Unfortunately I use to have an iPhoto reference library to save space but found the changes were not placed in the Finder file but in the iPhoto file so I really couldn't rely on going to the Finder to get the latest changes of the file (if I wanted to change using Photoshop for instance). I heard Aperture uses an non destructive XML file change tracking system which might make referencing a good way to go.
Ideas welcome. Thanks.
Dave
Hard to tell you what to do until we know what you want to do.

You'll have similar issues with Aperture.
You need to set Photoshop as an External Editor in either (or both) apps.

How do I get photos from the iPhoto import folder to the iPhoto library? It uploaded, but hung while deleting from my camera, so no imported photos are in the iPhoto library. I watched it upload about 400 photos, one by one. They're somewhere, but they don't appear in the iPhoto library. As iPhoto was deleting them from my camera, it got hung up, then a message came "you should eject before disconnecting a device." I hadn't touched the camera. The message came by itself. I couldn't get iPhoto to respond, so I disconnected the camera and did a Force Quit. Opening it back up, the pictures were gone. Can somebody help me?
What version of iPhoto are you running? Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I am so tired of iphoto crashing, losing work I've done. I want to switch to photoshop elements 10 but need to know if it uses the iphoto library or if I can import that library into elements
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired. -

Time Machine on my iMac won't open iPhoto. It goes to desktop screen automatically. When I select User/Picture/Iphoto library it only brings up the preview page with the size of the folder. I can't get into the library to look for lost photos.
Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos. Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

How do I import old photos into new iPhoto library?
I have a new macbook pro running iphoto 11. I am trying to import my photos onto the new computer from my old computer, running iphoto 8. I mounted the old computer as a hard disk, but when I go to import the photos into new iphoto library on the new computer, the old iphoto library is "grayed" out under the users/pictures/iphoto location.
How do I transfer the photos? To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else. -
In iPhoto preferences >Advanced, I originally 'ticked' the "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library" box. I have now installed a Drobo double back-up system and would like to delete these 'items' on my hard drive. Is this possible?
Not with iPhoto.
You can relocate the masters using Aperture if you're using the latest versions of both iPhoto and Aperture. However, if you're planning on using iPhoto going forward having the masters on one disk and the Library on another is not a good idea. Have a read of this

Can I import photos from an old iPhoto library?
Can I import photos from an old iPhoto library on an external hard drive to my current iPhoto library? The icon on the hard drive appears greyed out when I try via Import.
Open the older library and export the Photos from it to the Finder (File -> Export) and switch to the new Library and import those.
Or, use iPhoto Library Manager to move the photos, plus all the versions and associated metadata to the new Library.

Can someone tell me how to import a photo from my iPhoto library into Photo Shop Elements 11. When I am in Photo Shop Elements and I go to import the only option is to import from a camera. I want to import a photo from iPhoto. If I can't figure this out Photo Shop Elements is totally useless to me.
Not sure what you are trying to do
If you want to use PSE as an editor for iPhoto then set it in the iPhoto preferences (you need to search the forums for the exact settings - they are not obvious)
The general answer to yoru question is to import a photo form iPhoto to any other program is to select the photo in iPhoto and export to the desktop and import from there
Please explain what it is taht you want to do

... That is knowing that I have already imported all my iPhoto library but I selected the option "in their current location" from the "store files" pop-up menu.
So right now, all my pictures are referenced images in Aperture but stored in their current locations on the iPhoto folder.
I simply want to get the masters back into Aperture.
How can I do that?
Thanks a lot for you helpThere are some tutorials here
http://www.apple.com/aperture/tutorials/
one of which is specific to Aperture/iPhoto
Essentially though what you are wanting to do with your referenced master files is to
File/Consolidate Master/
Definitely worth having a read of the pro's and cons of managed vs referenced files.
RB maintains a great site with a wealth of ideas on workflows, worth having a erad of these.

How to import photos from an old iPhoto library
I have started using a new Mac (MacBook Pro Retina with OS10.10.1).
I saved my earlier iPhoto Library on my previous Mac to an external Drive. Now, if I try to open the old iPhoto Library file from my new Mac then iPhoto offers me to 'Switch Libraries' and to access pictures from the old library.
But this is not what I need. I would like to merge the old into the new (on my current Mac) and use a single iPhoto library for all pictures. In another word I would like to import content from the old library to the new and then use it as a single iPhoto library. When I try the 'iPhoto Library' files are inactive in the Finder....
Please advise steps to do do it.
ThanksiPhoto can not merge libraries
And you must NEVER Import an iPhoto library - it does not work and creates a massive mess
To merge libraries you must either use Aperture (being phased out this year) or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Or continue to have two libraries and switch between them

Importing movies actually stored in iPhoto library
I've successfully imported movies directly from my camera (with extension .mov).
But I've also movies (made with the same camera) in iPhoto Library (that I've imported from a backup DVD containing .jpeg and .mov). This movies are correctly played by Quicktime once I click it over.
Now I wish to export this movies from iPhoto Library to iMovie Library, to manage with iMovie.
I'm not able! I can't select this file.. I've tried to export to desktop and then to import in iMovie dragging it or selecting it from import menu but.. "this file can't be managed by iMovie" .
Can someone help me?
(thanks in advance and sorry for my english...)
-LottifurIt depends whether you want the edited in iPhoto copies or the originals.
If you want the originals, just control/right click the iPhoto Library and choose Show Package Contents, than drag the masters folder onto Lightroom.
However if you want the iPhoto edits, you will need to export cops from iPhoto and then import those to Lightroom. -
