Going to try something silly...
I'm getting seriously annoyed with window managers in general lately and their quirks, be it Linux based, or good old Winders. I sat back and took a look at what I typically do on a day to day basis, and I thought to myself "I think its time to go on a timewarp."
Call it masochistic (or just stupid), as an experiment I'm going to try, for a month anyway, to run 100% console mode. No Windows. No Gnome/KDE. No Firefox. Good lord, no World of Warcraft. I have a Wii and XBox upstairs when the craving for mindless gaming hits me. I'm not going to rule out old DOS games via DosBox and the like though.
I was weaned as a kid on TRSDOS, wayyyy back with the Model 1, then moved onto MSDOS 2.1, and was a Microsoft drone all the way to the present day. I'm not scared of a console; I used to live with it daily, and I got stuff done and I had fun. (BBS's, text adventures, programming, later on DOS games when VGA came out with the jaw-dropping 256 color display)
I'll still have Gnome installed, I'm just disabling GDM and the like from starting up on boot. In a pinch I'll fire it up, but going to really try to avoid doing that for the month. Plus, if anything, this should be seriously educational, as I can't point and click my way thru things anymore.
My biggest problem is that I didn't grow up with Linux, it was DOS, and I really don't know a lot of what's out there for the console world. So, I'm basically looking for suggestions on good console based applications.
I know for example about Lynx for browsing the web. I'm mediocre with Nano. (Grew up with the Wordstar keystrokes; trying to find something close to that) But after that, I'm kinda stuck.
Looking for ideas/recommendations on apps, like an audio players and the like. Are Linux console apps able to switch into a graphic mode? IE, picture viewers, movie players, etc? And I don't mean cheating by loading up a GTK app from the console. Also looking for a console based journal/diary type software; I use one to track stuff I do for clients; I saw one a long time ago that was GTK or console based, but for the life of me can't find it again with Google. Newsgroup and mail readers? I just don't know what all's out there, and Google pretty much gives you current stuff of course for GTK or QT.

I realise the point here is to avoid a mouse, however, even in ncurses-type apps (mc, midnight commander) a mouse is useful. So I use gpm. I would probably die if I couldn't use mc in a console, as its saved my ass from the fire many times with its lovely menus & trash-like behaviour when deleting things.
The other editor you may wish to use is pico which can be easily set to use wordstar bindings. (Aside, pico was developed by a wordstar dev, iirc.) I also very happy to use rsync, as my other method of dealing with files (moving, copying, backing up...etc). I think axyftp is a client (haven't got it installed so look this one up), and if not try ncftp.

I updated to Mavericks 6 months ago on my new Macbook Pro and have had nothing but trouble ever since -- despite numerous trips to the Genius Bar. They all act as though It's only my machine yet I'm reading literally hundreds of similar complaints on the Internet. To start:
1) My machine now "runs" very slow (as in 1980).
2) Search and Spotlight yield jumbled information.
3) MAIL and CCONTACTS are near useless with a spinning beachball the norm.
My Apple store had my machine for 5 days with no loaner! They did a manual rebuild and shrugged their sholders when it still didn't work after all that.
I have the distinct impression that Time Machine is at the bottom of some of my problems. I've used it to migrate data from my last three machines and I'm seeing some odd stuff from my other machines. In particular, I used an exact Macbook Pro loaned by a client after my last Mac crashed (I was backed up) and I'm seeing their grayed out login ID autoentered when I try to update Imovie and so I cannot log into my apple account.
I've used Mac since 1995 when the first SE came out and I'm very tech oriented. I can only wonder how frustrated the lay used might be. Any thoughts out there?Supply information about your Mac (guessing is no use)

Nobody get back to me on my other question, so I'm going to try again. I am making a PowerPoint for a meeting and I want to take a 3D PDF and have it spin or rotate on a continuous loop. How can I accomplish this?
Please ignore PowerPoint comment, I can make the 3D PDF no problem with my converter plug-in for AutoCAD. Once it is made though you can spin it by hand/mouse in Adobe. but I want a video like scene with the object spinning by itself for modeling purposes?

If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

when is apple going to do something about this recent flood of spam to .mac. i have had .mac for 4 years and in the last few months im getting like 10 junk mails a day. all for worthless investment tips. i came on here to find alot of others getting the same junk mail from the same sender. so it is obviously a target to .mac addresses and not just mine. come on apple, this has been happening for a few months now and is getting worse. are you going to do anyhthing about it on the server side of things? im paying over $100 for .mac and expect a fix. anybody else with this problem please please sound off here. we need a fix for this.
yes, i agree. over 3 years with 3 .mac addresses and this is the first time i've had any sort of a problem... and it's becoming an onslaught.
plus, not only is the mac filter not working, my mail 2.0.5 filter is not working. can someone let me know why these are not going into my junk folder? i think i've got it set up correctly as these are ticked:
enable junk mail filtering
move it to the junk mailbox (automatic)
(exempt) sender in my address book
(exempt) message is addressed using my full name
trust junk mail headers set by my ISP
can anyone from mac let us know that you are aware of the current problem and are at least looking into it?

I love AI love Apple. I own an iMac, a MacbookPro, an iPad, and an iPhone. I’ve been a loyal Mac user since the ‘80’s. But, please, when are you going to do something about iCal and its Reminders component? Attaching documents is clumsy. If you’re on iCloud, as I am, repeating events is impossible. The ability to copy text or graphics into either events or Reminders doesn’t really exist. This is an easy fix. Why not get it done?

You are having this problem because you are trying to use an existing Apple ID. There is a process, that if you follow and create a new Apple ID with an iTunes/Mac App Store account, you can create the account without a bank card.

FCP 7 export into FCP X, going to try out
Well I'm going to try and export from Final Cut 7 using a work around and it will be a lengthy export process.
I have feature length film I'm working on and most of the editing has been done, all in FCP 7. After doing a test run with another small project I've decided that all the effects and editing in FCP X will make it easier and faster to actually finish the feature film I've been working on.
Soo here it goes. Here's my prep
Step 1. remove all the filter effects. keep the timing.
Step 2. Export Video tracks one at time.
Step 3. Export Audio Tracks.
Step 4. Import into FCP X all tracks put into timeline
Step 5. This will be the time consuming part. Remove all the blank space from each Video track.

I just imported 70 photos successfully, edited them, and then attempted to upload them to a Facebook album. It did not work and got hung up, so I force quit IPhoto and was going to try again. The 70 photos have DISAPPEARED!! Help !!!!
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Help !!!!!!!!!! I upgrade my itunes to 10.5, But, my cpu start to reach 100%, and I cant connect to Itunes store! Morever , I did try something that ppl saying delete all program and reinstall again! It dont work to me! It drive me CRAZY!!!! HELP PLEASE HELP!!!!
It took about an hour to upgrade my iphone. You're also left a couple of times with a blank screen on the iphone whilst it does things in the background which is a bit confusing. Suggest you wait - it starts doing things again (like reload your apps and then your photos etc) after you think it's finished. It's finished only when it says it is.....

Kerberos/Keychain and PHD: Am I trying to do something silly?
Howdy-
I'm new to Mac OS server; and I've run into a slight issue - I've set up a Network Account with a roaming profile on OD, and that works fine - Kerberos/SSO all works, and the keychain shows my normal keychains.
However, I'm forever transferring gigs of temporary data into and out of my user account - Which means that I'm constantly waiting for data to move onto and off of my server. I'm only on 100mbit lan, so this can take a while.
So I thought if I switch my user to a Mobile account, I can work like a local user; and simply sync data at the beginning and end of session to keep my roaming profile up to date. This works beautifully albeit one caveat:
Both kerberos/sso and my keychain don't work. So whenever I try to connect to a server, either for screen sharing or AFP, I get prompted for a username and password every time I connect.
I've tried repairing the keychain; adding a new one, etc to no avail - So I'm wondering, am I being silly and I'm trying to do something which the system isn't designed to do?

- KogenYou've not provided a lot of detail so I am going to suggest that you look at a common point of trouble. But before I do, I will ask, is your DNS working properly (forward and reverse resolution), and if so, when you open /System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos, do you have a valid TGT after login (this is a Kerberos ticket granting ticket)?
Ok, if the answers to those questions are yes and yes, then try this:
1: On the server, open Terminal
2: Type the following command:
sudo serveradmin settings afp:kerberosPrincipal
3: You should get a result that look something like:
afp:kerberosPrincipal = "afpserver/[email protected]"
4: If you do not get this, then your AFP service is not configured to properly use Kerberos.
5: Correct the value by using the serveradmin command line tool and determining your proper hostname (hostname) and realm name.
Hope this helps. Oh, if the answers to either of the first two questions is no, then either fix DNS or resolve the issue of why you are not getting a TGT. Remember that time is critical. You client and server must be within 5 minutes delta for basic authentication. Less than that for many services. Time and DNS is the mantra.
