Gone mailbox

Hi everyone,
After opening the mailbox - it seems like it is brand new and asks me to set up a mail account. I previously experienced the same situation, I solved it with help of some forum by deleting some files- I can neither recall the forum nor the solution. I did not find the solution for my problem here. Help me please
thanks in advance

Sounds like your com.apple.Mail.plist file has become corrupted for whatever the reason. The file is located in <home>/Library/Preferences.
With Mail closed down, possible solutions are:
1. If you have a backup where Mail was working properly then drag that file from the same folder on your backup to the above folder and overwrite the existing copy. Re-start Mail.
2. Start Mail and go through the process of re-creating your email account. If Mail does not automatically find your old messages, by virtue of you re-creating your account, then you should be able to make them visible (they will be on your HD) by deleting the file "Envelope Index" from within folder <home>/Library/Mail. The steps are to close Mail first then Move the "Envelope Index" file to the desktop then re-start Mail.

• After upgrading to Maverick mailboxes have disappeared. Even after checking library, rebuild etc. they are gone. With important data. Is there any hope?

Maverick - lost all my mailboxes (Apple Mail) with important datat. Followed advice on help menu to reindex, rebuild; called Apple Chat. No help.
Losing important data is a HUGE problem.
Also, Maverick no longer has the many folders I once had in my Home scree. These folders included other important information
carefully arranged. Are the files somewhere else? In what order? What a mess!

I woke up this morning with the same problem (all was fine last night). Only way to get all my mailbox folders back was to use Time Machine while in Mail, choosing the backup file from previous night and selecting EACH MAILBOX to restore (23 for me). All appears okay so far today (except some of my accessories in the menu bar are gone).
I sure hope an update comes SOON. In anticipation of Mavericks and the new MAIL I switched from Outlook 2011 3 weeks ago transfering 17,000+ files and would hate to back

• After deleting my mail plist file all of my mailboxes are gone. How do I get them back?

I followed instructions to fix a preference file in mail and now my mailboxes are gone. How do I get them to show back up in mail?
I can see them in my ~/Library/Mail/V2 folder, but I don't know how to get them back into mail.

Re-enter your accounts exactly as they were before and everything should re-appear.

• My selfmade mailboxes are gone. How do I get them back?

I made myself extra mailboxes and one day they were gone. I have only the inbox, the send box and the paper basket. Somewhere I read that you can find it back in the Library, but I can't find them. Who can help me.

Were they "smart" mailboxes or real ones? If real, were they "On My Mac" mailboxes or were they on an IMAP server?

• Exchange 2007 mailbox move gone bad(?)

Hi to all,
I wonder if you can help me and point me to a direction to very "tricky" situation:
A have the datastore1 and datastore2. I have a backup (using backupexec) of both of them from Monday.
I moved some mailboxes from datastore1 to datastore2. Move completed successfully.
Later on, Disk on which datastore2 had corrupted, before a backup with the moved mailboxes has taken place. The files that exist now in the dir are:
\CatalogData-42f294a5-16b2-4c13-9080-698b7a7443bc-cc64dd2d-2428-4f12-bba2-79d6d34c4d27
E03.chk
E03.log
E0300000B44.log
[lot's of files....]
E03000117E6.log
E03000117E7.log
E03000117E8.log
E03000117E9.log
E03000117EA.log
E03res00001.jrs
E03res00002.jrs
tmp.edb
...as you can imagine the tmp.edb is not the filename of the datastore.
Can anyone suggest what can be done to recover the mailboxes??
Thank you in advance for any ideas...

Were you keeping the database and log files in the same directory? If you were, the problem isn't an Exchange problem, it's a problem of "where did the database file go".
If the assumption is that the file simply gone, with no hope of recovery, you can create a recovery storage group (RSG) and put the backup of the database of datastore1 in there. Then you can delete all the files for datastore2 and mount the database
(creating an empty database). You can them recover the contents of the mailboxes you moved (as of Monday) from the RSG to the empty datastore2. You'll have lost everything between Monday's backup and the time you created the empty datastore2 database.

• Exchange 2010 Shared mailbox permissions gone

In Exchange2010, I created a shared mailbox yesterday, then granted several groups and individuals "full access permissions" to the Shared mailbox.
When I arrived at work this morning and looked at the permissions, all the permissions I had assigned were gone, except for a single individual.
I re-applied the same permissions and checked them an hour later and they were gone again. I thought it may be related to the groups, so I selected several individuals and gave them Full Access Permissions to the Shared Mailbox. I checked
that some time later to discover that several individuals were missing again..
What might cause this to happen

Hi,
As Willard suggested, please check if these problematic mailboxes are members of Domain Admins or Enterprise Admins. Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins are assigned the explicit Deny permissions for Send As and Receive as on the main Exchange Organization
object in AD. If you want to grant them full access permission, you need to remove the explicit Deny permissions.
Hope this can be helpful to you.

• All mailboxes gone

Since yesterday my main POP mailbox is gone. Rebuild is not working, the spinner keeps spinning forever like it's getting new mail in, Junk doesn't show anything either.
I try to quit, wait 10 to 20 minutes, do a force quit, start again, same empty folders, spinner spinning like there's no tomorrow.
Once every two or three times, I can get to see the messages for the first 3 months of the year (I keep mails in the inbox for a year and then move them to another folder, I really don't get that much email on this POP account) and then when I select the inbox folder, they disappear and the spinner starts spinning as though it's downloading Paris Hilton's fanmail for the next 20 minutes or so.
Please advise.
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What does “Rebuild is not working” mean?
Means I tried rebuilding the inbox folder a few times, let it working aside while I did other things, came back to Mail and the rebuild option was available again for the folder but nothing had changed - ie, the spinner by the inbox label kept spinning as it were either downloading new email or working on the rebuild.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just
permissions), as described here:
Th
e Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all
about?
Ok, I think this might have pulled the trick. The messages seem to be there, anyway. I'll be 100% sure when I get back from work as I've totally put my morning to waste with this!
Strangely enough, I haven't had an abrupt shutdown since the last firmware update when the random shutdowns altogether stopped. How could my permissions go berzerk on me like that from one day to another?
Thanks for the help, btw.

• HELP! my emails disappeared after I modified the pop incoming and outgoing server settings in my apple mail email account. I have checked all my mailboxes--gone. How could they have disappeared? I am talking about 200 plus business emails

I have checked all my mailboxes--gone. How could they have disappeared? I am talking about 200 plus business emails. I am using Lion X.0

Thomas,
"Note that you were warned that this would happen and approved it. When you delete an e-mail account in Mail, you are shown a message like the following:"
You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account. I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN! It just deletes it - which *** for me. Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.) I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem. Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those. Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often. ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL! ;-)

• Recently updated mail now mailboxes are gone

I updated to Maverick with no issues, then yesterday morning I woke up and noticed all my mailboxes in mail were gone. Checked App Store and mail & iBooks were recently updated.
How can I get my mailboxes back?

Hi gambit j,
If you are having issues with Mail in Mavericks, you may want to make sure you have updated to the most recent release. You may find the following article helpful:

• Ahhh Renamed Mailbox and all Sent Messages GONE!

I have years of sent messages I need to get back to now suddenly gone after I renamed my mailbox in Accounts. I NEED them back, and can't find them anywhere on my computer, or through my webmail. All I wanted to do was rename it a little to make selecting the right mailbox a little easier, I had no idea this would happen (and it shouldn't). HELP!

Alright, false alarm, kind of. It turns out for some reason all of my sent messages randomly went to another sent account, go figure. They are all there, I just had to manually move them back (thank god for rules!) Can you just make this work like it should Apple?
However, I am still seeing something which is kind of weird. Hundreds of my messages from several different accounts are reading sent dates before the accounts were even open. Why is this happening? Thanks.

• MAIL: How do I get rid of *VIP mailbox? I really need this gone. Thanks.

MAIL: How do I get rid of *VIP mailbox? I really need this gone. Thanks.

Tried this - I think I'm doing it right - and not working. All incoming and outgoing emails appear in the VIPs and also in another unnamed stared folder in that box. I cannot delet either mailbox. I can delete mail within the boxes by choosing and deleting , often I have to do it 3 or 4 times before they decide to actually go away. Clicking on the star just highlights the message and then I delete, but new message from same recipient still shows up again. When the VIPs box and the folder in it are completely empty they are still there. Am I doing something wrong?

• Emails gone after Mailbox rebuild

I had a problem since I could not delete a message, it grayed out, but didn't go to the trash, so I rebuild the mailbox as advised, but now all my messages are gone.
Is there a way to get my messages back?
Gerrit,

I had the same problem when I updated from Panther to Tiger yesterday - used archieve and install. I found a partial solution, as follows: Go to your home folder, then /library/mail/(email account)/inbox.mbox. I found a folder in there named "Messages-(long alphanumeric string)". I renamed this folder as simply "Messages", restarted the mail app, and rebuilt the inbox.
Now I have my email messages back, but not all of them. At the time I upgraded, my Inbox in Panther had about 1100 messages, about 500 unread. After the upgrade and before doing the folder rename, the "Messages-alphanumeric string" folder had about 770 files inside. Because these were not being displayed in the Inbox in the Mail app, I don't know how many were marked read and unread. After the folder rename and the Inbox rebuild, I had 720 messages in my Inbox (400 unread) and 720 files in my "Messages" folder. The Inbox rebuild renamed every file in the "Messages" folder and deleted about 50 of them.
I had made a back-up of my Panther disk to a firewire drive before the upgrade. I imported my Inbox from the backup, which created an Import mailbox with the same 720 messages, 400 unread. Somehow, the import process causes about 400 of my Panther Mail messages to disappear.
The unhelpful Mail Help on this general topic says these kinds of problems can occur if your Inbox file exceeds 2 GB. This does not seem to be the cause of my problems because my Inbox folder is only about 160 MB.

• Sync changed mailboxes option gone?

For the last several weeks, I've found myself missing e-mails in searches that I know I archived. Turns out, Mail just isn't synchronizing my IMAP inboxes anymore, so my local cache didn't have the messages. When I went to re-enable it, I found that the option is no longer available! There used to be a checkbox in the Advanced tab of IMAP accounts to "Automatically sync changed mailboxes". Now it's just gone and doesn't perform this critical task automatically (not that it should).
Did the option move somewhere? I did some google and Apple Discussion searching and haven't found any mention of this anywhere. Not sure if it was changed in one of the latest system updates or has been missing ever since the Leopard upgrade. It's put a kink in things for me, for sure.

Sorry if I'm not being clear. I have no interest in arguing the merits of keeping copies for offline use. That's an absolute given here and is not something I'm arguing against.
The issue is in how often Mail.app refreshes the local cache of files. It used to be that there would be a periodic background check of all of your IMAP folders, where Mail.app would traverse your entire mail heirarchy periodically to check for changes. That was controlled by the "Synch changed mailboxes" checkbox. If you had that unchecked, the behavior was as it is today: it only refreshes the local cache when you expressly visit that mailbox by opening it.
Practically, this means, exactly what I said earlier: if you don't click on each of your mailboxes before doing a search, or opening a Smart Mailbox (which is really a stored search), you could potentially be getting less information than if you were to visit each of your mailboxes to refresh the local cache.
Is that clearer?

• Rebuild mailbox, all mails gone...

One mailbox of mine showed only headers but no message in the body. So i tried to rebuild. Now all (but one) mails the inbox are gone. In the send box the header are there, the body messages not (don't think i will rebuild again..). And yes, i didn't backup lately....
So were can i find the lost messages (or does the system dispose of them immidiately when you hit "rebuild")

Rebuild does not dispose of messages. Did you wait patiently for Rebuild to finish, and wait until message list disappears before reappearing?
However, if the message bodies were already gone, then Rebuild would further remove the list messages.
In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail -- if the mailbox rebuilt was the Inbox, then open the Account folder (likely a POP Account folder?), and further open the INBOX.mbox folder, and then further open the Messages folder within. How many xxxx.emlx files is the Messages folder reported to contain?
If the mailbox in question was one you created, then in the Mail folder, find and open the Mailboxes folder where that would reside, and make the same examination.
