Good Archive Software

Dear Friends,
We have an interesting requirement in our project.
We need to archive the selected data from
multiple tables and be able to
retrieve the data to put it back in the tables.
I wondor if there is any third party software
to do it.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

After using OS X for several years, I am rather annoyed at the 3D interface. It's bubbly, rounded and spherical, whereas the displays are 2D, so it creates a rather false sense of interaction. While I was confined to a G3 iMac in between my Dual G5 and Macbook swaps, I found the Mac OS 9 interface to be rather appropriate for the 2D displays of flatpanels. It's lack of multi-tasking (though it's claimed it has it) rather appeals to me as in a way the user then focuses on one task at a time. If I'm writing a song, I'm not going to be posting on a website, if I'm painting a backdrop for a film I won't be composing a song in the background, too.
If Apple's future OS designs could allow the user to disable multi-tasking code entirely, and use a flat 2D user interface, I personally would welcome these additions. OS X is far too slow as it is, and OS 9 would literally fly on the new hardware. Imagine future porting Mac OS 9 and optimizing it for a Quad G5 and comparing the speed to Mac OS X 10.4?

Archiving Software/System or just configure Synology RS 814

Recommendations on good upload software?

I posted a ? about inserting hyperlinks, got one helpful answer, will try to implement it today. NEXT ? is what is good upload software that works with iWeb. 'Fetch' was mentioned in one post. What should I buy (since Apple Safari apparently only uploads to the .Mac site) to upload my page to my existing site? And I am trying to REPLACE a page uploaded using Claris Homepage (which works a lot better than the evil Bill Gates-inspired iWeb).

Check how many applications are starting when you log in, I found that if there was a lot of activity at login Finder did not display the icons on the desktop correctly, again like you it did not occur at every login, just occasionally.
For Safari have you tried resetting Safari, if that does not help you could disable plugins and extensions one at a time. You may find one of those is causing the problem.

Meeting place 8.5 backup/archive software

Hello all, we just migrated to MP 8.5 and it there is no more FTP option for backup and archiving, only ssh/rsync.
Does anybody have any recommendations that they are using for the archiving software?

MP 8.5 only uses rsync over SSH, no longer users FTP as a backup/archiving option.

I am happy with 10.6.8 but I have to upgrade to 10.7 or later to run a drobo set up that I need and Jam will not run on the intel.
I have imac 2.7 i5 intel with 8 ram running 10.6.8.

What is a good security software for Mac

My bank seems to think that my Mac has a virus, as my accounts have had several attempted hacks over the last month. My computer seems to run fine and I haven't noticed any problems, but probably should buy some sort of security software before I change all my account numbers etc. I'm leary of just internet shopping for security software as I am not knowledgable enough to know if something is for real or not. What would you reccommend for as good security software?

More than likely your bank considers using a Mac or Safari is a "virus". A lot (not all) of investment sites, banks, etc. think Macs are just not significant to them and get "confused" or just plain reject Macs attempting to connect to them because they are entrenched with Microsoft crap and Internet Explorer's particular variant of HTML.
The way around this of course it just change your user agent to make them think you are using Internet Explorer. This will usually shut them up but of course if they are using a Microsoft variant of HTML some stuff may draw incorrectly.
The way you can change your user agent in Safari is to enable the Safari Develop menu (Safari preferences --> Advanced --> Show Develop menu checkbox). Then in the Develop menu change your user agent to one of the flavors of IE. See what happens then.
If you are using Firefox there are user agent add-ons. One is User Agent Switcher.
I'm sure other browser also have a way to change user agents as well; builtin like Safari or add-ons/extensions as with Firefox.

You'll need additional for .wmv conversion. Flip4Mac isn't free (the player is free, but not the upgrade to convert).

What is a good defragmenting software for the mac, and what is the price ranges if there are mutiple ones?

I have had my mac for about a 1 year 5 months, coming onto 6 months. And I want to keep it running in top shape, or as close as it can get. I Am just wondering what is are good softwares for defragmenting a Macbook and what are the price ranges, and what are the recommendations. Which would you rate from best to worst in other words.

First Mac OS X doesn't need defragged. If your harddrive is ~80% full heavy downloading could hurt disk performance but I'd say you're in the clear. If Apple considered defragging a necessity they would have included it into Disk Utility.

Anyone know good transcribing software?

This probably isn't the place to post this, but I really didn't see a good category on the discussion board, so if there's a better place, just direct me.
I lot of my job involves transcribing interview off my digital tape recorder. I know there are Windows-based programs (like Dragon) that allow you to dock the recorder with the computer and upload the audio for transcription, something that would save me a lot of time. Does anyone know if there's that sort of software for Mac and where I might be able to get it?

Suggestions for archival software

I realize I'm not supposed to ask about what to buy on this forum site, but I have gone everywhere else and no one can give me a good answer so I thought I'd come to the experts.
I use Aperture to archive my photos with metadata. Is there something similar for video? I am only a hobbyist with about 10 Terabytes of video clips in many camera formats. I do not use servers. I only use one MacBook Pro. I want to archive my video with metadata so I can easily search and use them in Final Cut Pro for my hobby.(I create about 10 videos a year). Is Final Cut Server overkill? If so, what else is there?

FCSvr will do what you want. I think it may be an overkill for a hobbyist.
Although it is meant to be an out-of-the-box solution, it is not. We have spent an enormous amount of time developing workflows and tuning the server for an environment of 30 edit stations and 2 x XSANs with a tape archive. For this type of environment it was essential to go down the FCSvr path.
Unlike Aperture there is a steep learning curve with server. But you can tag all of your media with metadata which may allow you to easily find it again in years to come.
It sounds like your needs are simple. FCSvr is really for multi-user environments which have complex workflows which benefit from the automation of a variety of tasks such as email notifications and transcoding to multiple formats. If I were you I would spend a bit of time familiarising yourself with the Finders 'Smart Folders' and use a sensible file-naming convention along with a simple logical file-tree to help organise your media.

MPEG Streamclip is free. That's one of the best parts about it!
FFMpegX isn't bad, but I think it's harder to set up and use. It might be able to handle more formats, thought.

There should be a new System Update like good old Software Installer

I believe that there was once a program called Software Installer that was replaced by System Update. I liked the old one because of its clear layout and information: There was a column with software installed, column with current version and column with most up-to-date version of the software.Then you had checkboxes to indicate which programs you want to be updated, check them and start the update and it worked fine. In fact Productivity center still uses similar dialog for installation
What I don't like about System update:
1. Half of the time the Package server is unavailable. Everybody who ever used System Update knows that.
1a. While the package server is unavailable the packages (I mean software install files) are available through tthe software.
2. Dowloading 400kb of update list (or whatever) takes forever. At least its the longest 400 kb I've seen on my internet connection. This is especially ridiculous when you can just go to support website and check the updates yourself in seconds. Why can't System Update just comunicate with the website. It serves the same purpose and?
3. you can't use any of the information from the previous session: I have downloaded graphics driver and it is on the hardrive but it will install only after System update connects to database. I can install it manually but couldn't system update display it as some sort of avaible file?
4. There are four tabs to display my 3 updates, couldn't it all fit in one window? Also I have to expand the view to see my current and up-to-date version of software. I just click to install and I never notice which version was installed actually. Later when having problems I can't tell which version of software I'm having problems with.
5. Sometimes updates just dissapear. I once uninstalled Access Connections and since then System Update never showed it as an available update.
The way I see it the System Update software should rewritten almost fully. There is no way that the software that is suppose to help you update the system is slower and less reliable than a user writing down the updates, downloading and installing them through the website.
Having that said I'm not totally negative, for example it is a great feature is that an update is unatended for a group of updates. Yet it seems that System Update is somehow on the worng track.

Is there any good Linux software to show slideshows, videos and more?

Hi.
We are trying to replace windows and apple on all computers in our church. Now, I know we will most likely hang on to some of our macs for video editing purposes, but we have identified several computers that runs Windows that can easily use Linux.
We have come across one nut that we have yet to solve, and I would hope that someone would have some input on how to do this.
In the lobby, we have a windows computer hooked up to a tv. On the screen we are showing Slideshows with information on upcoming events, videos from meetings, twitter and also a list of all the Buses leaving from the nearby bus stop. The latter one is hooked to "Västtrafiks" (our local bus company) API, and update in real time.
All this is very easily done in WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation). Since there is no support in mono for this yet, we are looking to replace the application all together. However, we can't seem to find a suitable replacement. We have all been looking for a while, and we are starting to think that we may have to write our own program in Java.
Now, this would be a huge time sink, so I hope that some of you might have some insight about a software that could fulfill our needs.
The basic requirements are Image slideshow, background Music, Video slideshow, twitter feed, and perhaps rss feed integration. Now, the ability to show Västtrafiks time table would be neat, but I think we can hack that ourselves if we find a suitable open source solution for the rest.
I am going to try to get a video on what it looks like today, to get a better understanding about what it is.

A bit more information. Today we use a Dropbox folder to add media, like videos and images etc. After every loop that the software has made it stops to check if the folder has any new files. If it has, it automatically includes it in the feed, as well as deletes any media that has been removed from the folder. So everything is managed by uploading to the folder from anywhere, the box itself is headless and is only running this single output.
Today we only show the output on one single screen. But it may be interesting to do this over several screens in the future.
We could use openshot and manually edit the feed etc, but that takes away the ease of use. The idea is that anyone with something to say should be able to upload it without any tech skills. Right now, we are thinking about porting the functionality to Java, however I think that this would be at least 50 work hours to get it functional.
