"Good" beginners book to Oracle DB administration

I am as new as it gets to Oracle and I need a good beginners book for database administration. During my searches online I have found mostly poor reviews on all the Oracle DBA beginners books I've found, including Oracles 10g for beginners own publication. The one book I've found that is highly supported, but not necessarily for the newborn, but a must have is "Oracle Database 10g Insider Solutions". I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books for beginners, that are good books, and for beginners. Those seemed to be the two most common problems in all the reviews I read. The software I'm going to be using is Oracle 10g.

Please do not consider reading any other Oracle books before reading the Oracle documentation. Tom Kyte offers a good list here http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/06-mar/o26asktom.html. See the section "Where to begin". I also strongly advice reading his book Export Oracle Database Architecture for fundamentals, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1590595300/sr=8-1/qid=1154697462/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8631501-9759232?ie=UTF8.

  • Regarding Good book for Oracle Service Bus 11g

    Hi All,
What is the good book for Oracle Service Bus 11g in the below list(or You can also specify any book other than from below list)?
1)Oracle Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook
2)Oracle Service bus in 21 days
3)The definitive guide to SOA:Oracle Service Bus,Second edition (or)first edition?
Can yOu help me out which is the good book for OSB?

    Hi Deilby,
    Thank You for your reply.
According to my understanding(I don't know whether it is correct or not),If you want to have full-fledged OSB development,we need to have eclipse.
If you just need to have routing and transformation along with SOA suite development,We can use OSB console .
Can You also look into this below SOA forums thread with SOA-OSB questions? If I have 'Oracle
Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook' , Can I answer all those questions?
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2559964?tstart=0
My intention is clear,I want to have full-fledged OSB development information(important components) and that leads to have good exposure to face questions.
Can You help me out to clarify my understanding and recommend the book according to that?
Note: I already worked on SOA Suite.I worked on OSB console. I think whatever we can  do with OSB eclipse development the samething we can do with OSB console along with SOA suite.
    Can You clarify on this?

  • Recommend a good XML book?

I am looking for a good XML book.
I found 'Building Oracle XML Applications' by Steve Muench at AMAZON, but its dated SEP 2000, and for Oracle 8i.
    I'm using 9i...will this matter?
    Suggestions please...
    Thanks
    Terry Stevens

you can still get by with it and it is worth buying although it does need upgrading to 9i.
I have managed to produce XML files from it though and applied stylesheets to them so I would recommend it.

  • What is a good rmi book?

can someone please recommned a good rmi book, i know some things about rmi, having taken an advanced os class at college, so i'm familiar with stubs, and rpc, but know little about how to program with rmi. something for beginners, with examples, not all hello world programs.
    Thank you.

I am reading Java RMI by William Grosso (OReilly 2002). I recommend it. I especially like his emphasis on design principles. I wish there were more code to study. I also appreciate explanations on details that are presented as notes and boxes. Its a very enjoyable book to read, a nice presentation.
My introduction to RMI was chapter 5 (79 pages) of Core Java Volume II by Cay Horstmann (Sun MicroSystems Press 2002). I also recommend this. He has lots of examples and very helpful explanations and insights. I vaguely remember having to set up a Tomcat Web Server for one of the examples.
There are actually two OReilly RMI books. The other one is Java Distributed Computing by Jim Fairley (1998). I have seen it in bookstores, but I have not read it.
Java Network Programming by Elliot Rusty Harold (OReilly 2000) suggests Java Distributed Computing as further reading in his chapter 18 on RMI. This chapter is short, but as is the entire book, without peer in clarity of explanations. I must admit I only dip into this chapter when I am curious, I havent read all of it. But I really like the section Under the Hood.
(Also, somewhere on these forums recently, a person was asking about serialization. One of the replies recommended the 40 page chapter on serialization in Java RMI by Grosso.)

  • Reference book for Oracle Linux exam 1Z0-402

    Hi gurus!
Can you please give me useful reference books which cover the al topics for Oracle Linux Exam 1Z0-402 preparation?
    Thanks
    Mokarem

Can you please give me useful reference books which cover the al topics for Oracle Linux Exam 1Z0-402 preparation?By itself, 1Z0-402 does not grant any certification. Presumably you are going for Oracle Linux Administrator Certified Associate. That certification path also requires passing 1Z0-403. However, you can skip 1Z0-402 if you already have one of several other industry Linux certifications (LPI, Linux+, Ubuntu, Red Hat, or Novell). My recommendation would be to go for one of these certifications, then skip straight to the 1Z0-403 exam. I suggest that for several reasons:
    1. There is a lot more study resources for exams like CompTIAs Linux+ available.
    2. The other Linux certifications are better known than Oracle's.
    3. Since 1Z0-402 by itself does not grant a certification, going this route gets you two certifications for the price of one.

  • About this book: Expert Oracle Practices ( Oak Table)

    Hi folks,
I know that some of the authors of this book are on this forum so this thread is addressed to them.
Could you please provide the table of contents ?
Why did you decide to write this book ? What this book can teach more in relation to other books (ex:Tom Kyte's books) ?

    Farenheiit,
I do not believe that Apress has released a table of contents for the book yet (the book is scheduled to be published in January 2010). The book description on the Apress site (http://www.apress.com/book/view/9781430226680) and Amazon.com will probably be updated once the book’s table of contents is complete. The Apress website lists 16 OakTable Network members who co-wrote the book, and you will likely be able to find posts on this forum (as well as other forums and blogs) from several of the authors.
Pete Finnigan announced that he wrote two chapters for the book on the topics of user security and data security (http://www.petefinnigan.com/weblog/archives/00001272.htm).
I co-wrote two chapters with a very knowledgeable member of the OakTable Network. The chapter titles are “Understanding Performance Optimization Methods” and “Choosing a Performance Optimization Method”. The two chapters explore the vast number of ways to identify Oracle database performance problems, and demonstrate methods of attacking the problems once identified. Some of the techniques demonstrated in the chapters have not previously appeared in book form. The chapters also attempt to address some of the bad advice found when performing web searches on Oracle keywords. Several reproducible test cases are included.
Why did I decide to write a chapter? As I stated in a couple other threads on this forum, I do not like confusion, for example, cases where “B” does not logically follow (result) from “A”. Based on what I have seen, eliminating confusion and helping other people understand Oracle seems to be a significant motivator for many (and very likely all) of the OakTable members.
Personal opinion: I purchased a copy of Tom Kyte’s “Expert One on One” and two copies of his “Expert Oracle Database Architecture”, and have read both book titles cover to cover. His books are excellent, highly detailed, and include a number of test cases which allow the reader to understand concepts, while reproducing the output using their databases. The test cases also offer a method to determine if something was true in Oracle 9i R1 or in 10g R1 is no longer true in 11g R2. I do not know if it is a fair comparison, but you might be able to consider his books as the Oracle “Concepts Guide” written so that it is easy to understand, with real-world examples, and real-world “war stories” (quite a number of these appear in “Expert One on One”). I consider Tom Kyte’s “Expert Oracle Database Architecture” as the critical starting point, conveying the foundation knowledge needed to understand the material presented in other books including “Optimizing Oracle Performance”, “Troubleshooting Oracle Performance”, “Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals”, “Forecasting Oracle Performance”, and the “Expert Oracle Practices” book.

  • Good reference book

    Hi,
MII was introduced to our company just some days ago. So, the knowledge of the subject is quite poor. Now we're searching for a good reference book for MII to have good and quick support.
I'm wondering whether the following would be a good choice - well, we're just beginners in this moment ... :
<Implementing and Configuring SAP MII, SAP Press>
Propably you have a better idea!?
    Best Regards

    Hi Michael,
As per my knowledge This is the only book on SAP MII which is availble
It is a very nice book.
other than that I use to follow SAP MII Help.
There is plenty of documents and blogs available in SDN for SAP MII you can check out below URL

  • Creation of a Custom Folder in Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition

    Hi
Could anybody help me in solving this problem while creating a Custom Folder in Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition ?
    My Requirement is :
I Connect to EUL_US/EUL_US@<HOST_STRING> under Oracle Discoverer Administration Edition.
I selected a Pre-Defined Business Area Eg. General Ledger
There i created a Custom Folder by Name Test Custom Folder
The Query which i used in my Custom Folder is
    SELECT NAME FROM GL.GL_JE_BATCHES
When i Used this Query it says Table or view does not exist.
The Folder is getting created but without a Query.
I am not able to preceed further.
    Any Help would be appreciated
    Regards
    Nakul Venkataraman

Hi Nakul, you may be running into a problem with the sql for your custom folder. For some reason Discoverer Admin will allow you to create a custom folder with sql, but then if you change it and it has any advanced sql, i.e. grouping sets, analytic functions etc., you probably receive an error.
An option is to create a view using the same sql and create a folder from the database using this view.
    Hope this helps.
    Brent.

  • Oracle BI Administration tool has stopped working

Just now finished the 11g installation. But im not able to open BI Administrator.Im getting this error. Please help.
"Oracle BI Administration tool has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program"

I followed the below steps(taken from this forum) for installing OBIEE11g 64 bit version in a 64 bit machine.Installation completed successfully. But not able to open BI Administration tool.Any suggestions???
There is not a particular 64bit installation. I think it works like this: if you are using a 64bit JDK the apps server is also running 64 bit.
You can find the generic jar here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/ias/downloads/wls-main-097127.html and take the generic one (http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/middleware/11g/wls1033_generic.jar)
You install this by a command like this (you have to look up the documentation): java -XXm.... .... wls1033_generic.jar
    Then a installer pops up.
    So these were my steps:
    - installed RCU
    - installed 64 bits JDK (jdk-6u21-windows-x64.exe)
    - installed Weblogic (wls1033_generic.jar)
    - installed OBI as "software only"
    - configured OBIi (config.bat you can find in <obi11g home>\Oracle_BI1\bin)
All together it does not take much longer then the 32bit install. Only some extra steps to do.
