Good book for learning code
Hi, I know that book recommendations come up frequently in this forum but my need is somewhat specific.
I need a book that will help me learn actionscript 3 and provide examples so that I can enter the code, think about it and see it work.
Can anyone recommend a book that will do this? Many thanks.
Your question isn't unique, but the answers to it vary based on who ends up providing a response. I have collected numerous such responses to help make answering your question faster and more complete. I do not use books, so I cannot personally recommend any of them, but they have all been recommended by knowledgeable folks over time in these forums. I have to believe that any one of them rely on showing examples that you can try and learn from...

Suggest a good book for learning?
Hey, all.
Trying to get into the automating/scripting thing as I've started a new job that has to do a lot of versions of similar animations/illustrations. I'm no programmer, but have had some success with simple AppleScripts in Illustrator and Photoshop, but After Effects doesn't like to play nice with AS. So I figure I may as well focus my efforts on ExtendScript/JavaScript to work with all the apps, be cross-platform, plus help with my limited Expressions knowledge.
So can anyone suggest some good books for learning the JavaScript language? I've done online tutorials, which have helped a little, but just a big ol' consolidated JavaScript book, teaching the structure and syntax from the beginning (again, not a programmer by trade) would be best for me. Thing is, 95% of the books I've looked at are focused on web design, which I'm not that interested in. I'll use one if the core JavaScript teachings are well-presented and I can just ignore the web stuff; just don't want to buy a book that I'm only going to read half of and not learn everything I need to.
All suggestions welcome, and thanks in advance.Hi there - lots of resources...
Look up "eloquent javascript" online for a pdf.
Javascript - The Definitive guide
NewThinkTank on youtube
Codeacademy
Then it's the scripting guide for the other half. -
Good book for learning pl/sql quickly
Please suggest me a good book that covers all aspects of pl/sql in depth.
Thanks in advance. :-)A good book for learning PL/SQL quickly?
That is not a function of the book. That is a function of your ability to learn and understand new concepts. No book can make you learn "faster".
Also, even before trying to learn PL/SQL, there are concepts and fundamentals to understand. Specifically:
- [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm]Oracle® Database Concepts
- [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14251/toc.htm]Oracle® Database Application Developer's Guide - Fundamentals
- [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14261/toc.htm]Oracle® Database PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference
And after that, also have a look at Application Developer's Guide - Large Objects, Application Developer's Guide - Object-Relational Features. Not to mention the SQL Reference and the PL/SQL Packages and Types Reference guides.

Any good books for learning flash?
I'm trying to learn how to use flash, and there's only so much I can learn on my own. I looked up some books on various websites, but I don't know which would be the "best" to use for someone completely new to the program.
I would recommend anything by David Stiller. He posts a lot on these forums and has a great way of explain the why and how of doing stuff in Flash.
It also depends upon if you are planning on learning code or timeline animation (or both). Chris Georgenes (who also often posts here) is a genius animator and has some good books too.
For animation through code I recommend Keith Peter's "Making Things Move."
There are also great on-line tutorials like at gotoAndLearn.com by the amazing Lee Brimlow.
That should get you started... -

Good book for learning to use?
is there an apple pro training book on aperture? if not, would anyone be able to recommend a good book on using aperture?
Yes there is a book in the Apple Pro Training Series. It is entitled "Getting Started with Aperture" by Estelle McGechie. It might be available at a local Borders or Barnes & Noble or you can get it at www.peachpit.com

Buy it if you think you might benefit. Be warned, it is a complete waste of paper.

Recommend good books for learning java?
im using Java How to Program, Deitel&deitel.
i find it all right.
what do u think about this one?
can u recommend any other?
NatashaThere's a lot of online reference available, too:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/second_edition/html/j.title.doc.html
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/index.html
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html
There's links to all the online documentation, as well as to a few recommended books that you can buy, at:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/index.html
As for specific book, sorry I can't help you. I personally learned a lot more Java by browsing through the API reference than I did by checking out coding examples. But that might only be because I already had a decent background in programming when I started. If you start Java as your first programming language, then an example and explanation filled book would be really useful. Like I said, sorry about not being able to provide any solid recommendations.
Hope that helps though. Check out those links, they are pretty useful. The tutorial is pretty helpful sometimes, too.

A good book for learning will be?
Sorry, new to java here, I though was just a cup of coffee. ; )
I used the Core Java books, but that's already long agoo.
But after reading those books, you still need a lot, but really a lot of coding.
When time is right, study for the SCJP exam (now it's called different by Oracle).
This will give you a good theoretical knowledge of java basics. -

I know Servlets and JSP and i want to enhance my knowledge with programming and also i have to learn structs, ajax.
which is the good book for this. You can log into http://en.wikipedia.org and search for EJB to see what its about, and read about what that article says about the Spring framework.
Although there are many IDEs out there, I recommended Eclipse IDE because its free and is used by a very large number of professional developers. Also, just reading books isn't much help if you don't have a platform to try things out in. Normally when you are starting out in Java, its recommended that you work with java in a text editor and run code on the dos command line to get familiar with that before moving onto an IDE. If you want to read more on this topic, one links is: http://www.javaworld.com/community/node/4587 Sorry, I'm not going to get into an IDE war on which one is best or more likely to be used by a future employer. I haven't come across any unbiased articles that really stand out on this issue. -
Know any books to learn code?
Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good
books for beginers on Dreamweaver. More over, I want to learn
myself the code used.
CheersI spent several weeks learning how to write html using the
Mac's TextEdit. I had tried DW first, but as we all know here, I
couldn't get anywhere without knowing some code. I did some
tutorials and worked on my own html pages until I felt comfortable
with the basics. (I was preparing for a DW workshop, so I had extra
incentive -- and it was very helpful!) Besides, it was interesting
and even kind of fun.
Books that were helpful for me:
1. For HTML (not DW), take a look at Head First HTML with CSS
and XHTML by Elisabeth Freeman and Eric Freeman (O'Reilly). The
book may look a little unusual, but it worked for me! (I had tried
several other books first.) Also from the Peachpit Press Visual
Quckstart Guide series, the HTML, XHTML and CSS answered some of my
questions. A book that is now a little older but one with a
straightforward approach that covers the basics is Learning Web
Design, by Jennifer Niederst Robbins (another from O'Reilly). Her
newer book is Web Design in a Nutshell, which is more of a
reference book instead of an instruction guide (it's pretty dense
and doesn't include tutorials).
2. For CSS, try the O'Reilly book, CSS, The Missing Manual,
by David Sawyer McFarland. Includes a chapter on Dreamweaver.
3. For Dreamweaver, someone already mentioned The Missing
Manual. I didn't get far with the Macromedia/Adobe Training from
the Source book/CD (although after working hard on this stuff for a
few weeks, it will probably make more sense to me now). The Adobe
on-line tutorials are good if you can find the ones you need (with
all the Adobe resources on line, it can be challenging to find just
the right ones). The Help files that came with DW seem to talk in
circles, so I have really needed some extra resources.
Good luck!
