Good Deck Reccomendation

Hello-
I want to get a decent deck that I can use with FCE that will import Mini DV and VHS. Any assistace would be greatly appreciated.

miniDV decks are expensive.
I use a standard VHS deck and I also purchased a used miniDV camera in great condition on Ebay to use as a "full time" allways connected deck for my FCE editing system. My video camera has analog inputs so I hook it up between my VHS VCR and my Mac. It works great for under $200 total for both decks. You NEED the analog inputs in the video camera for the VHS tape capture. I do not know of a cheaper way to go and I do not think you could get any better quality of "capture" at any budget even if you spent 1-2 thousand on top of the line decks and a box. You may have everything you need to hook this up now. I purchased mine because I wanted it to stay connected to the computer all the time. It will also save wear and tear on my "GOOD" video camera I use for shooting. Your capture deck will see alot of wear and tear from pausing, FF, RR, etc.
Hope this helps.

  • Video Camera not detected through Firewire

I've been having trouble connecting my video camera to my computer for importing video into Final Cut.
After some deduction, my main conclusion/concern is that when I hook up my Canon minidv camera to the computer via firewire 400, it fails to show up in the system profiler under hardware>firewire.
I first tried all sorts of hookup sequences (involving turning off/on cpu, off/on camera, off/on program, and plugging firewire at certain times) No luck. Final Cut could not detect camera.
Secondly, tried the same thing with iMovie, but same result.
Thirdly, I bought a new firewire cable. Still didn't work.
Then, I switched my Canon with my friend's Sony video cam. Same result.
What's confusing is my Mac Pro's firewire 400 port works. I connect a Maxtor external hard drive, it is recognized, and it mounts all the time without a problem (I can also see the drive's info through system profiler.) However, when I connect my camera to the comp, and open system profiler's firewire status, I get the spinning wheel for a bit, then it says "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices." Sometimes I don't even get that message, and system profiler just stays the same saying "FireWire Bus>Built in Hub" as if nothing is connected at all.
I also tried daisy-chaining the camera through the recognized external hd to the comp. Though, when I attempted to check the status in system profiler, the computer froze and I had to hard shutdown. Not good.
I've attempted all I can think of. Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

is the camera on apple's "approved" list? I forget where to find it but there is or was such a list. do you have any other fw devices connected? for whatever reasons, often cameras must be the only fw device connected. My first attempt would be to turn on the device and connect it with no other fw devices connected. If it did not work, I would begin my standard hardware trouble shooting which consists of booting from my clean system hd that I normally keep on a shelf. It is an HD image of my system as it came from Apple. In your case I'd get an HD and install a clean 10.4 on the HD (without updates) and try connecting after that. IF 10.4 works you could try updating to 10.4.11 and so forth. Doing this process requires two drives so you can keep a good working boot drive while continuing to update till there is a problem. This supposes it's a software issue. Doing some searching on your camera make/model and cross referencing with apple and firewire should give you an idea as to whether others are having trouble and whether it's a common problem or a software issue. If others are having no issues then hopefully it's software. Another option would be to get a deck. I use a basic dv deck and you might want to go that route too. it's a much better thing in the long run anyway and if you can afford it and can find a known-good deck it would save a lot of trouble shooting time and hassle. obviously get one you can return if it doesn't connect.

  • What program can be used to convert lps to digital in mavericks?

What program works for conversion of lps and cassettes to digital now that Mavericks has changed my life?

    Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ <--free
    Audition - http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html  <---$19.99/mo
    WireTap Studio - http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/  <---$69
You may also need a USB turntable, but you can always use an RCA to 3/16" adapter
And there are USB cassette players too (http://www.amazon.com/Cassette-Converter-Helps-Recapture-Collection/dp/B005VQL1X 8) but if you have a good deck, you only need an RCA to 3/16" adapter to work with ANY of the software linked above.

  • Transfer VHS to DVD

I have an old video on a VHS tape I want to transfer to a DVD, or some other digital format. I was going to use a VHS - DVD Recorder combo, but I heard that there are better ways, and you can get better quality.
    Any suggestions?
I know this may not be the right place to ask, but with the amount of Video Professionals here, I figure people have experience.
    Thanks.

If you will be transfering a lot of old VHS tapes and Dont have a good deck with TBC, consider the canopus ADVC 300 AD converter with noise correction. Below is a review i did a while ago...

For me the biggest benefit of the box is doing the color correction in real time as it is captured while cleaning some of the grain at the same time. This is faster for me than correcxting it in PPRO. Also, it is better to attempt the clean up while the video is analog rather in post; there is more information available. I liked the AGC (auto gain corrector) for video and audio. As sceens change it does a decent job making adjustments. (Sometimes the changes are too abrupt, so it depends on the footage)
Note; My VCR has a TBC built in. So, it does a pretty good job on its own stabalizing footage ebfore it even gets to the ADVC300. So, the results would be more dramtic if I was using a VCR without TBC.
For the curious, below are links to 5 videos I output to WMV showing the videos captured via a DV deck -vs the ADVC (using split screen)
    My setup is as follows:
    - Capturing without the ADVC300:
JVC HRS9911 SVHS VCR conneted through a sony DSR-25 DV deck via Svideo. The sony DV deck simply provides analog passthru to DV. Of course the deck is connected to my NLE via 1394.
    - Capturing with ADVC300:
JVC HRS9911 SVHS VCR connected to ADVC300 via Svideo. ADVC300 connected via 1394 to my NLE
Test 1: Old VHS Beach footage
    http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/advc300/beach.wmv
This was using the default settings of the ADVC right out of the box.
Test 2a Home movie with 3d NR filters on strong
    http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/advc300/home_movie1.wmv
This compares original to advc with the 3d NR filters on the strong setting. The 2D filters are off. Note; you will see some of the ghosting problem during the fast movement.
My WebpageTest 2b Same Home movie capture showing NR on AND off
    http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/advc300/home_movie2.wmv
Same footage as the previous clip. This time the left shows capture via ADVC300 with NO Noise filters on. Right side is with the same 3D NR filters on Strong.
Test 3 Wedding footage vhs dup in EP mode
    http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/advc300/wedding.wmv
Here's everyone's favorite. A VHS wedding copied to another VHS in EP mode. No magic here, but the NR does improve the background quite a bit.
Test 4 Old super8 footage that was transfered to VHS several years ago
    http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/advc300/super8.wmv
I encoded these to WMV ata fairly high rate so you can hopefully see the differences. I hope these help others who may be considering this box. It cant fix eveything, and there are tradeoffs to the 3d NR, but my quick testing reveals the box does improve footage. And thats what I was after.
Conclusion: If you have a VCR without TBC or are just using a cam Passthr, you will see improvement in the video quality if you route though this box rather than a cam or non tbc vcr. If you do analog xfers alot, this box can really help. If you have a VCR with TBC (or an external TBC) then the ADVC300 will provide SOME improvment, but I suspect the TBC will in itself make a big difference. Not for the casual users as it costs $500.

  • VHS to digital conversion

I've recently converted a few home movie vhs tapes to mpg format. At low resoution the quality is still quite good. However, TVs are much larger today than 15 years ago. I'd like to watch them on my 46" HDTV (4:3 of course). How do I change the resolution to a larger size and maintain the video quality. Currently, the mpg files look terrible when played on my 46" HDTV. I'm told Premiere has a function to up-convert (I hope that's the right terminology) and keep video quality. I'm a noob to Adobe Premiere Pro. I have CS4. Thanks.

John mentioned the ADVC300.  I did a review on it for a magazine long ago.  Here's a summary with some online demos.
I dug this up from an old post:

  • New IPT Now I need wifi network upgrade

Well there are a few good deck days in Iowa. My current Express and original silver saucer Apple Airports just don't give me good coverage outside the house. Time to add another Express or go large with an Extreme. Anyone think there is an advantage with range of the Extreme over the Express? I heard that using a second Airport slows the output of the piggy backed Airport way down. But that has to be better than a one bar signal does it not?

(See guys, this is exactly why I wanted to draw the line at whether or not you can get the job done using CS4. All software will have issues at one point or another. You can't draw the line at does it work perfectly and expect the results to mean anything. The bottom line for potential customers is can they actually produce and collect that paycheck.
When I left the poll the tally was 11 for whom it works, and only 2 for whom it doesn't. That's pretty encouraging. What the hell did you guys do after I left to make Jeffery have to ask this question?)

  • Need a good U-matic (3/4") deck

    Hey guys,
I have about a thousand original Stella Adler U-matic tapes I need to digitize. I'm currently in the market for a few ancient U-matic deck (NTSC, preferably plays all bands). Not destroying tapes would be a definite plus as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be most appreciated!
Note: The decks will be hooked up to a Canopus ADVC300 and captured using FCP 4.5. Then backed up onto an xServe.

Smart @#$$#SS answers aside. There's a guy here in Louisville who has every piece of gear ever made. How he keeps it all in good running condition is beyond me. Video Kitchen is the name of his business. He's pulled me out of the fire with some old equipment and tapes I need dubbed. Surely, as large as Dallas is you guys have someone like that.
It may be more cost effective to have someone dub all of that stuff to a better format for storage etc. Just a thought if you can't find a deck you're willing to pay for.

  • Good DV Deck for capturing?

I dont won't to wear out the heads on the PAN GS500. Great camera by the way.
    -Brian

A second PAN GS500, Then you can shoot a second angle without the expense of a deck only investment. If you are worried about needing to replace this camera do to over use on the heads then replace it now and use it as a deck and camera.
    Good Luck

  • Reccomend a good IDE for Win95

I desparately need a good IDE for my old Win95 laptop. I've been trying to do a lot of Java development on this pentium II IBM thinkpad 600 and getting nowhere. Right now I have JBuilder4 foundation installed on it and it's horrible. The code insight doesn't always work. The garbage collector brings all development (typing included) to a halt. Maybe someone can show me how to either fine tune JBuilder4 foundation for Win95 development or reccomend a good free IDE that I could use to replace it. I use Eclipse at work and that's the best but it's too fat for Win95. I just tried to install eclipse on my poor laptop and it won't even get past the splash screen. Help!
    Cliff

Check out my freeware IDE Gel at http://www.gexperts.com . It is natively compiled for Windows so it is light and fast. It includes most common features such as code assistants (code completion, parameter hints, javadoc identifier, etc) for Java and Jsp, smart project management, integrated source control, etc. You can see screenshots at http://www.gexperts.com/features.html

  • Sony GVD-1000 a good choice for a MiniDV deck?

We need a fairly inexpensive (~$1,000) deck to use for reading MiniDV tapes. Is anyone using the Sony GVD-1000 with FCP? Does it work well? Are there any better choices?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Maybe take a look at this deck...JVC SRVS-30U(there may be a newer model available now). I used it at my previous job, and was pretty satisfied with it. Should still be well under 1K.
I'm currently working with a Sony GY-DV500 Walkman and am not happy with it at all. Several reasons, not the least of which is it only has analog inputs, no outputs. So I can't run my FW through it to a production monitor. Secondly, for it's pricepoint, I find it pretty featureless.
I looked at the specs on your model, and didn't see that many features on it either, but your needs may be different.
Just my opinion...others may have better ideas.

So, I found this GREAT program called Security Spy http://www.bensoftware.com/ss/ and I want to put a wireless, outdoor camera outside and cover my walkway.
Anyone have any experience with an AFFORDBALE (in $200 range) outdoor, wireless camera?

    Hello gPod,
    http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/axis0241004.html
While this is not quite in your $200 price range it is Mac compatable. I didn't check any local distributers to see if they discount but you can do that. And the cam is on bensoftware's list of acceptable devices as well.
Good luck and do post back to let us know what you end up with and your experience.

  • Who can reccomend a good Flash decompiler?

I'm looking for a Flash decompiler and I was hoping for a
    recomendation.
I work in an organization where we frequently have to update
    Flash files
that were built several months or more in the past.
    Unfortunately, the
organization system hasn't maintained the FLAs in any
    particular spot (until
recently), so the old ones can be very difficult to locate.
    Sometimes
impossible. The SWFs, however, are generally much easier to
    find.
I'm under the impression that a decompiler will help us
    convert these SWFs
back into FLAs so they can be edited and updated. Yes? If so,
    which ones
work the best. And why, if you care to share that info.
    Thanks a lot.
