Good diagnostics freeware

I'm looking for some good diagnostics freeware that could possibly tell me what's wrong with my mac pro.
I redid my system with 10.6 but it is still rebooting alot maybe even more then it was with 10.5 which leads me to believe that it's a hard ware thing not os thing.
So I'm wondering if I can run some software to diagnose what might be the problem, mother board, memory, etc. I just got a new video card 4 months ago so I don't think it's that.
I don't have my 10.6 or 10.5 DVD either.
Thanks
Jason

You're running Snow Leopard, but are posting in the Leopard forum, and your profile says 10.5.5?

Why not? The first thing to do is run the +Apple Hardware Test.+ It's tailored to your specific Mac's hardware, and was on one of the discs that came with it. If you don't have it, call AppleCare (800-275-2273). They'll send a replacement set for a nominal fee.
If you don't have your Snow Leopard disc, you're technically not licensed to run Snow Leopard. And you can't repair file system problems on your internal HD, restore from Time Machine backups, or reinstall OSX if needed. While you're on the phone with AppleCare, get a retail Snow Leopard disc, too.
Once you get them, if your Mac will burn dual-layer DVDs, copy them. See +Duplicating a Disk+ in Disk Utility's Help.
Also make one or two partitions of 8-10 GB on a hard drive, and copy them there via the Restore tab of Disk Utility. You can then boot and run from them there rather than the discs (and they'll boot and run much faster from there, too).

Could anyone recommend some good (preferably freeware) text editors that can parse Java and C/C++?

  • Have Any Advice for Proper Maintenance of G4?

    Good Morning?
I have had my Digital Audio 466 MHz G4 for several years now and it has always treated me wonderfully. However now that I have put thousands of songs from my cd collection, thousands of pictures and the multitude of data that one collects over the years onto this system, I am becoming a little paranoid about a catastrophic system failure.
I must admit, I have never backed up the hard drive or run any kind of maintenance on this system. I am now ready to start. What should I do, what programs should I use (preferably freeware) and how often? I am talking about backing up the hard drive, any kind of program that I should run to improve system performance, etc.
Currently the machine is running 10.4.8, has 768 MB of RAM, the 40GB internal hard drive that came with the system, an additional 120GB hard drive that was installed within the last year. I do have a 80GB external hard drive with a firewire connection.
I would like to thank everyone in advance for any help and for making this forum such a valuable resource.
    Strangeite

    Hi, Strangeite -
In addition to Tom's links above, some generalities -
    • Free space on drives. On a boot drive running OSX, keep at least 5GB or 15% free (unused) space, whichever is greater. On a non-boot drive, keep at least 15% free space. This allows room for OSX to use its auto-defrag routines, and helps prevent directory or access issues which can happen when a drive gets too full.
    • Backing up data. This should be done to a drive other than the boot drive - another internal drive, an external drive, a CD, etc. Partitioning the boot drive does not step around this - a partition of a drive is still physically part of the drive, which means that if the drive dies, so do all partitions of that drive.
If your data is very valuable, make redundant backups of it - such as to both another hard drive and to a CD. Backups are only as secure as the media they are on.
Setting up one of your additional hard drives as a backup boot drive is good planning - your machine is firewire bootable.
    • Drive maintenance. Run a disk utility on a regular basis on all your drives - the sooner something is found and repaired, the less damage (loss of data) will occur. OSX's Disk Utility is good for this - although it can not fix everything, it has good diagnostics.
If you can afford both Alsoft's DiskWarrior and Micromat's TechTool Pro, get and use both. If only one fits your budget, DiskWarrior is a good choice.
    • Physical.
Keep the machine reasonably dust free, and well ventilated. Heat is a killer; dust is an insulator. An accumulation of dust on fan blades can not only reduce the fan's speed, hence its cooling ability, but also stress the fan to early failure. Canned air, which can be got at places like Radio Shack, are good to blow out accumulated dust. Vacuum cleaners are not good - they are too powerful, and too capable of generating a lot of static electricity. Keep a couple of inches clearance around all sides of the machine, more in back - don't stifle cooling air flows.
Copper will slowly oxidize over time; copper oxide is not a good conductor of electricity. It would not hurt to break and remake cable connections annually or so, in order to keep the contacts in the connectors clean.
If your machine is critical to your life, keep some reasonable spares on hand - a spare mouse; a spare keyboard; perhaps some spare cables and hubs or equivalent. No sense being knocked out of use for lack of a low-cost item.

This is tough to guess because there isn't a lot of information to work with.  I'll provide some basic steps you can take to see if it helps. Try clearing the temporary internet files, cache, and other non-essential stuff from your system.    You can do this in tools menu, then internet options.  There is a good cleaning freeware program called CCleaner. I use that and it finds a lot of junk and discards it.  It also cleans up the registry for you as well. If your hard drive is very full this could slow it down as well. see if there are files you can backup off the drive or delete to free up space.  It's also possible that your system is dusty and dirty and it's slowing down the processor. Maybe it's time to clean the vents and see if the heatsink in the PC is clogged with dust.  Heat can also slow a PC down especially if it's left on a lot so make sure it's cleaned as well.
    Hope  these tips help you.

  • Computer to router constantly sending and receiving packets

I have two separate computers, one wireless and one connected direct to my router. One running XP home and the other running XP pro, both will all current updates. Both computers running ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and Kaspersky antivirus and should be virus free. Both computers are constantly sending and receiving several packets to the router every second (even with internet unplugged, this is just computer to router traffic). It is svchost.exe that is doing the work. It is TCP traffic with around 200-7000 bytes of data. Sometimes when redoing the connection (power down router, unplug cable, ect…) it will quit doing it. I had the same issue with my past USRobotics router. What could be causing this? It is interfering with my ability to monitor my internet bandwidth speed and usage.
    WRT54GL XPsp2

Since no one has any idea, I did some things on my own. The first thing I did was to use my computers firewall to block the destination port to each router (they were both different). The second thing I did was to update my linksys router firmware with DD-WRT. That seems to have solved it for good, as I have disabled the the firewall blocks and all is good. Freeware hacks rule.

  • Mac OS 9.1 (and 8.6) photo screensaver?

I've assembled some nifty astronomy photos that I'm using as a screensaver on my two machines running OS X 10.4 Tiger, and I would like to do the same for two older (beige) Macs at my son's school, which run OS 8.6 and 9.1.
My question: is there a way to rotate through these photos (about 10 of them) as a screensaver on those older machines, either built into the OS (as with OS X) or via some good downloadable freeware?
A lower-quality version of one of these images can be found here, for those who're interested:

    Hi, John -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
OS 9 has nothing built-in to do that. There are a lot of freeware screensavers available; look for one with a picture module - many of those can be set to use pictures from a folder in sequence or at random.
Here are some sites where you may find something suitable -
Screen Gear - Screen Saver, Image Displayer
    MacScreenSavers.com - Free screen savers

I'ave updated to Win7 Pro and am trying to reload the Business Center with My DVD from the lenovo site.  It loads in compatibility mode with XP, but after installation and the initial run, it gives a message "The certificate file is missing or has been corrupted.  Please reinstall it.".  Is this certificate file its looking for in the download, or is it a separate file somewhere?
    Thanks

    Hi cba1,
Is this update necessary or can you ignore this update message?
In my opinion updates only necessary if something doesnt work properly
I dont use Toshiba CD creator because there are some good alternative (freeware) programs, like CD Burner XP. Have you ever heard of that?
If not its worth a try!!! ;)

  • Snapshot Image Backup

Can anyone recommend some good shareware, freeware or any other cheap application/s for snapshot imaging? My aim is to preserve some applications which i no longer have install disks for. I was thinking of making a new blank account and copying that if at all possible but I'm quite certain that snapshot imaging can only copy the whole drive.

    Hi
You're welcome and no a RAID is not a Snapshot. Neither is it a backup. Although yours and my concept of what a RAID is and does might be two different things? I did say "Assuming I've understood what you mean by Snapshot?" Yes there is specific software that does take a "Snapshot" of a drive's contents at a designated time depending on what it is you want to achieve.
Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is free as is iBackup which you could use? Both can be scheduled and both can be configured to backup specific items/folders if you wish. You could Google for more yourself?

  • 1920 Intermediate codec - 1920 mp4 .... any good freeware software?

Are there any good free programs that will convert 1920x1080 intermediate codec straight across to 1920 mpeg4 without loss of quality?
I've heard that iMovie '08 doesn't actually export at full 1080i but upscales somehow. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to actually export the EVENT as such (the full size, 40GB/hour icod/mov files). Whenever you select SHARE > export using quicktime it always is exporting the project and not the event. But the projects are much smaller files. I want to work directly with the original event files and transfer those over to mpeg4 for use and viewing on a PC.
    Thanks

Not sure, but you can try MPEGStreamclip. Have a look at the website to see if this will do what you want:

  • Any good freeware battery tester for the Macbook?

I searched for battery tester on versiontracker and there are no results. I saw the genius bar used an ipod nano to test my battery. I wonder if anybody knows a good downloadable battery tester for Macbooks.

In addition to that link (which is very good) there are two popular applications I see a lot of members post about:
    Coconut Battery Monitor (http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/index.html)
    iStat Pro (http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/)
The iStat widget is a system monitor, that includes a portion on battery health.

  • Clean Restore? Good Idea?

So I've had my MBP for less then a year now but it's been bogging down a lot lately. I'm debating whether or not I should completely erase the whole volume and restore OS X to its clean an new condition. Will this do any difference to the overall performance of my laptop? I'm not sure what to do plus theres some third-party applications that I've lost serial numbers to so It's gonna be a hassle...

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

From your statements above, it sounds like you never tried to burn a CD for at least the first year that you owned the laptop, as it had a one year warranty on it. While you might have used it frequently to install software,  play DVDs, Blu-Ray disks, etc, that's unclear from your statements. Nonetheless, it might just be dirty-dusty. So, before deleting-uninstalling any software, and given they're cheap, try a CD-DVD Cleaner Disk first and see if that resolves your problems.
