Good DVD Rippers

Does anybody know of any free or cheap good dvd rippers that work for macs, i have mac the ripper and cant seem to get it to work, when i burn it to another dvd it just replays the beginning 2 minutes of the previews, can anyone offer better suggestions or tips?

Nope.
It's against Apple's terms of use to discuss this, as it violates the DMCA to copy commercial DVD's.

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Know a good dvd ripper for mac?

I just downloaded handbrake and it's taking about an hour to get through 10%. Does anyone know a good dvd to ipod converter that is free and compatible with a mac?
    thanks

Yeah, it could certainly be due to the 2-pass encoding setting.
If you're at 10% on the 2nd pass after 1 hour... that's entirely normal.
2-pass encoding will yield a higher quality video file, but it will take roughly twice as long to encode.

  • Good DVD maker

what''s a good dvd maker for mac besides idvd?

    Hello,
I personally prefer iMovie and iDVD as a package (produce in iMovie and finalize / format in iDVD).
But, a very, very popular alternative is Toast:

If you have a larger budget, the pros use:
    DVD Studio Pro:

    Final Cut Pro:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/
    Final Cut Studio:

    I hope this helps.

This new Superdrive also supports DVD-Audio so you can load more music into it than a CD.

  • Any good DVD Player for KDE?

I have switched from Gnome to KDE, and I am liking it...
I used to use Totem and VLC to play dvds, so , is there any good dvd players in qt?

For DVDs, I still use kaffeine most of the time, but I also use VLC and kmplayer and regular old mplayer at times, too.  I dislike the direction kaffeine has taken UI-wise.  It used to be a thing of beauty, and now (IMO) it's a good example of what goes wrong with some KDE apps.

  • I need a good DVD creator app for Mac

I have been researching DVD creator apps in the App Store and I am really not finding anything good. A large majority (80%+) have poor reviews and the others either have no reviews or the positive reviews are very suspect like the creators friends and family wrote them. I mostly need this as I work on iMovie projects and would like to share them with people who don't do You Tube or prefer to watch movies/video on their DVD player. I guess I missed out when Apple offered iDVD as standard software. If I see a trend of replies mentioning the same app I will check it out. I don't mind paying for it, I just want it to work.

I've requested this post be relocated to an appropriate Mac forum, rather than the iPhone Accessories forum.

  • How do I get good DVD output from FX7 footage?

I just videotaped a dance concert and when I transferred the video to my computer and output it to a DL DVD, the quality is nowhere near as good as a straight HDMI connection to a TV. It doesn't even look that good on the computer in Premiere elements before I output to DVD. I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 7. I don't know if it's the project settings for the transfer, I chose HDV 1080i 30. Is Premiere Elements maybe not going to give me what I want? My Camera is a Sony HDR-FX7
    thanks,
    Eric

I assume you are working with high definition video in a high definition project preset and burning as a standard DVD. How much video do you have on the DVD... for maximum quality (8Mbps with PE7) you are limited to a little over an hour for a SL DVD and 2 hours for a DL DVD. Any more footage and the bitrate will be reduced lowering the quality. If the quality is still poor you could try downconverting in the cam and capturing as DV-AVI and working in a standard definition project in PE7. Certainly in early versions of Premiere Elements this gave better quality
Other thing to consider is that your standard definition footage played on a DVD (which is a compressed format as well) is never going to look as good as the high definition video played over HDMI from the camcorder.

  • Good dvd creator app for iMac

I'm looking for a solid app to create DVD's that will contain more that one movie with a menu of my choosing with background music. Most seem to fail with adding the background music on the burned DVD. Any help is welcomed

The very best video DVD authoring application, IMO, is iDVD. Granted it's been discontinued but there really is no substitute that can produce as professional looking, multi menu product as iDVD. iDVD offers nearly 90 different themes to choose from. As of now iDVD is compatible with Yosemite.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
I've not been able to test any of the other apps as I haven't found any that have a demo version.
When the time comes when iDVD is no longer compatible with Yosemite or its successor I have an external HD that has Mavericks on it which I'll boot into to use.

  • Best workflow to get good DVD from edited HDV

I have created a beautiful Blu-ray disc using the follwing workflow:
    1. HDV tape
    2. PE4 to edit.
    3. PE4 output HD 1080i 30 creating mts files
    3. Unwrap mts files to MPEG2 files with MPEG streamclip
    4. Author and burn a Blu-ray disk using a group of these files using TMPGEnc AuthoringWorks 4
    Results are great.
Now I need a workflow for DVD's. Simply having PE4 output to NTSC DVD Widescreen instead of HD 1080i, yields very poor results. I have read there are interlace issues and PE is not good at down conversion.
Is there some other path using PE4 or some other software operating on the output of PE4 (for example the HD 1080i MPEG2 files)?

Well from comments from over on Muvipix it would appear PE7 does a better job of exporting to standard definition DVD. A few folks have done comparisions and concluded that with PE7 the quality of burning a standard DVD from a high definition timeline is the same as using the downconvert in camera that Steve recommeded.
Also CS4 is reportly better at down converting to standard definition compared to earlier versions. I use Vegas Pro and get good results, although I dont do many down conversions as I mainly use a high definition workflow from import to export/burning.

  • Making a Good DVD with HD footage

    Hi there,
I am finishing up a feature as I speak and am having trouble getting a good quality image for the DVD. The Film was shot on an HVX-200 and looks just great. That is until I try to export it out. I get a good amount of Jaggy edges and artifacts throughout the 78 Min film. This especially occurs when Motion FX are in play as in the Main Title. We will be having a screening soon for the Execs and I would like to have the best possible quality picture to show them does anyone have an recommendations on how to get a great showable image on DVD or if there is another way format in which I could present it?
I am running FC Studio 2 by the way.

    Hi Jake,
If you export your movie in FCP use QT movie (self-contained checked) not QT movie conversion as that would recompress your movie.
Also check out the video on an external monitor not the canvas or computer screen.
To create your DVD first use Compressor (either send the timeline to Compressor or create a QT movie self-contained and import that in Compressor).
After you have done that in Compressor settings tab choose DVD;best quality 90 minutes, drag and drop it in the rectangular area above the settings tab where your video title is being shown.
Compressor will create an MPEG2 video and an ac3 dolby stereo audio file when you click submit.
In the inspector window you can customize settings.
When the compression is done then use FCPstudio4.
Following this workflow has served me very well when producing videos originally shot with HVX 200.
    Hope that helps,
    G.

  • Good dvd studio pro tutorial out there.

    Hi,
I'm just starting to get my feet wet with dvd studio pro. Is there a good introduction/tutorial online to help me get started?

Actually, I was not able to get around this - almost anything besides black is almost impossible to match. I figured that black would hard to mess up, because you ask yourself, "how much more black could it be" and of course the answer is "none… none more black". Unfortunately the answer to the other timeless question - "is it black enough" was "apparently not".
I started laughing before I even clicked the link. One of the greatest movies ever made
Curiously, the only player on which my black overlays turned gray was Apple DVD Player - no set top players I tested, or several players on the windows platform showed my overlays as gray. I wonder if my display card is a variable.
Could be. But even then it could be related to which version of Apple DVD Player with which version of QuickTime. There were a couple of things that only seemed to crop up for playback issues on certain versions of Tiger. This is the stuff that drives me nuts sometimes.
It's occurring to me that it might be possible to design a menu with some other geometric shapes that could have edges or a grid so that the background-matching overlays could be contained in a shape that might mask the edges in case of a color shift.
My favorite DVD that uses this method is Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses."
Have not checked that movie out yet. Keep on meaning to at some point..
