Good Fretless Bass Libraries?

I've spent quite a bit of time checking out multisampled fretless bass libraries. As far as I've been able to tell, the most expressive, natural sounding libraries are the following:
_Yellow Tools Majestic_ – Contains all the basses in Yellow Tools' "Pure:e-Basses" libraries, Volumes 1 and 2, plus additional samples.
_Ueberschall Liquid Instrument Series: Electric Bass_ – Apparently these are the same samples that are available in Celemony's Melodyne Sound Library (MSL) - Electric Bass
_Spectrasonics Bass Legends_ – The complete library on CD-ROM, not the CD-Audio version.
Does anyone have any experience with any of those libraries in Logic Pro? I'm specifically interested in the quality, versatility, and realism of the fretless bass sounds in these or other libraries.
Thanks!

Sorry...it never occurred to me that there might be folks unfamiliar with the instrument, but that's probably an assumption I shouldn't have made.
By "fretless bass" I mean *fretless electric bass* of four or more strings. I do not mean the acoustic or upright bass ("double bass"), which also is a fretless instrument. I mean specifically the kind of bass—and especially the style of articulation, glissandos, slap, pop, buzz, vibrato, "growl", and other accompanying nuances—pioneered by Jaco Pastorius, and subsequently exemplified by such players as Michael Manring, Patrick O'Hearn, Kim Stone, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, and literally hundreds more highly accomplished players who have explored the expressiveness of the instrument. It is often (mistakenly) call a "fretless bass guitar", but there are may traditionalists who object to the electric bass being called a guitar.
Jaco's bass tells the story. He took a Fender Jazz Bass body, attached a Fender Precision Bass neck to it, ripped the frets out of the fretboard, and voilà—instant fretless bass. Fender and many other companies now manufacture fretless basses, but that wasn't the case when Jaco created his.
Anyhow, there is a half-decent fretless bass in the GarageBand instrument library, but it's very rudimentary. It's multi-sampled, but the velocity gradations and their corresponding nuances in the sample sounds don't come close to capturing the full range of expression of which the instrument is capable. BTW, I own a Pedulla Buzz-Bass (4-string fretless), which I play as needed within the limits of my skill. But I'm don't have Jaco's chops; there are times when I need a good fretless bass library.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder

A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Trouble getting a good bass tone--need advice

    Hey everyone,
I record my bass by pluging directly into my MOTU Traveler. I like to record dry and then try and adjust for a better tone in the mix. The problem I've been having is my bass tone always ends up sounding muddy or to "bassy". I just can't seem to get a simple, good sounding bass tone. I have a good instrument (Fender P-bass) and I'm meticulous about setting a proper level. Does anyone have any suggestions short of buying another preamp (instead of using the ones on my MOTU)? Any particular plug-in settings or other set-up advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Does anyone have any suggestions short of buying another preamp (instead of using the ones on my MOTU)?
If you want to greatly improve the tone from your bass, a better pre-amp or direct box will do wonders.
We all look for "plug-in fixes". The truth is, there aren't any. Get, good, solid tone going in, and you won't need to use any plug-ins. Wanting to use plug-ins, now that's a different story...
Other than dishing out the advice you asked not to receive (although it is the advice that will most likely fix your problem), I'll second the EQ option, and follow it whole heartedly with Timothy's recommendation on the Ampeg SVX plug-in.
The Ampeg bass amp plug-in sounds great. However, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't say spend that money on a high quality direct box first , like the Avalon U5, Countryman 85, or Radial J48...

  • Garage Band/Hammond Bass Sound/Casio Privia/Split Keyboard

Hi, I'm not great with technology so I would love a simple answer if possible.
I have connected my Privia 320 to my Mac and run it through garage band successfully, but I was hoping someone could answer the following questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a good Hammond bass sound available on Garage Band or a way to create or download one?
    2. Does anyone know how I can split the keyboard so that the left hand remains with this bass sound while the right hand can flip through various patches of other organs or synths or whatever? The keyboard itself has a split button but I can't figure out how this might help me while running through a computer. I have always found Midi stuff terribly confusing.
    Thank you very much...

As for question #2: GB doesn't allow you to split the keyboard, sorry. It can only listen to midi signals on one track (=instrument) at a time.

  • Looking for Bass plugin like Musiclabs 'Real-Strat'

Basically I'm looking for a very realistic Bass guitar AU that works similarly to Realstrat. It needs to cater for natural slides and ideally have performance repetitions. I've tried using the EXS patches to no success and I can't find anything on the market. There's loads of these things cropping up now (EZ Drummer etc) but I don't see a bass version...
Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Yes - wait for Spectrasonics' Trillian which should be here in a month or two.
Or, Scarbee do some excellent bass libraries for Kontakt (if you have that) - Black Bass etc which have performance articulations and intelligent on-the-fly automatic articulation switching.

  • Looking for cinematic bass

First of all, what kind of bass sound is this, starting at 18 seconds?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UJKHsLKyyM&list=UUt6paKp4Sr4s5sxSxKWOIcQ
Also want this smooth bass sound in the background, which you easily can hear at 3.48. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRDgVm7TixY Have been searching through my library, but I can find this clean bass.
    Any tips?
Can you recommend an additional contents?

Bass sound 1 could be almost any bass (electric, acoustic, synth) made soft & mellow by heavy Lo-pass/Hi-cut filtering and with some chorus on it (it's a stereo sound).
Bass sound two sounds as if it started life as a sampled fretless Bass, that also been Hi-cut a little, chorused and with some resonant filtering at its' start.
Both sounds can be made using Logic synths/samplers (EXS24, RetroSynth) & effects, though I personally favor the free Podolski synth for basses.

  • Uograde to Logic Studio just for Sculpture?

I'm really happy with Logic Express, and have added a lot of multi sampled libraries for the EXS24. But
I do love physical modelling syntheszers because they can emulate acoustic plucked instruments really well, and I've heard that Sculpture is a physical modelling synth. But surprisingly there are no videos about this synth on youtube.
So, is it a good idea to upgrade to Logic Studio just to get Sculpture? If not, should I get Applied Acoustic Studio's (physical modelling synth)"String Studio VS-1, instead?

AAS String Studio is indeed a great Plug In but it sounds nothing like Sculpture and isn't as versatile. String Studio can create very special sounds as well as bread&butter stuff, the fretless basses sound great, the guitars not so much and you can get some incredible experimental sounds and pads out of it as well but it has more limited modulation and editing capabilities than Sculpture.
In Sculpture you can sidechain an Audio Input to trigger/disturb the string yielding to incredible results like rythmical textures (if you e.g. use a drumlooop/sequencer as sidechain Input) which you can't achieve with String Studio. Also you can record Midi controller data and turn that into a sequenced loop which is another fantastic feature of Sculpture. The characteristic of the plucked string can be anything between nylon, metal, glass or wood, abusing the parameters let's you create instruments you've never heard of. Also the morphing feature is great where you can dynamically morph between different aspects of a sound all synced to the clock of your DAW. The Jitter LFO´s are very useful too and the Modulation matrix as a whole is very well developed.
So I would say yes, upgrade to L8 (there are many other reasons for that by the way) and you'll be a happy musician/producer.

  • I don't think I've ever complained about apple - but wow...

Logic 8! Not to sure about this.
Having used PT, Nuendo, and SX, the drum machine and sampler (samples are horrible) and you would think they would be better - - I know good samples when I hear them, EWQLSO, VSL, and these are terrible. And why do they tout SOUNDTRACK as sound design. SOUND DESIGN IS something like FX EXTREME - wow, 5 years and nothing even close to having any of these (sound design plug ins, drum machine, guitar sim not even that good), and I still can't get LOGIC to see Drum Core or any REASON rewire device.
Maybe I just don't know it well enough yet - but for the most part, I never EVER had to pick up a manual for a DAW. Never. And this version is supposed to be easier to use - and yes I remember 5.5 it was pathetic just to hook up a virtual synth.
Any tips or advice, including but not limited too, suggestions, greatly appreciated.
First complaint ever. And why can you double click on a track and have it open the channel strip?
    Things they need to do:
    • Create great drum machine similar to strike (DIGI) but sound like Drum Core
    • Design a good sound design device ala FX Extreme
    • Create a good Guitar/Bass sim. The pro is very noisy and does not sound that good.
Maybe I need more time, so we'll see but so far....hmmmmm.

Okay, I have almost 200 posts, you have 12? Troll alert?
    Indeed.
Anyway, yes I have used Logic Express, but always found it limiting,
I also have BFD, and DKFH, the beauty about STRIKE is in its design, one key and instant round robin,
even if you select one patch, it won't sound the same, hit another key and poof a new fill.
    Okay, so a few things.
I opened mainstage, much better samples...I also had all the jam packs before.
Also, does the NODE thing really help or is there latency involved? Other computer at home is on network, using a MBP 2.2, would I be better of getting a new MINI Duo core 2, will this help?
I set up a template and used 5 tracks to record and it was a hip hop type and the CPU was almost spiked, wondering if NODE would really help. Anyway, starting to become more impressed.
    Now a few things.
Can you record the MAIN STAGE?
Also, if I have a project open in Sound Track pro, my performance track that I imported is a bit off (midi instruments bounced to AIFF) and was wondering either in Logic or Soundtrack, is there a way to take a beat I like and found in Sound Track Pro 2, and somehow use its beat map and apply it to my performance so it's just as tight?
Thanks...its getting better the more I use it.
Also sounds better than Logic 7. There is a performance done at gearslutz, 7 vs 8 same song, 8 for sure sounds better.
Regarding AUDIO, I have scored trailers and produced sample libraries for Sony.
And hoping this is the new way and away from Pro Fools.
    Thanks

  • Picassa vs iPhoto

I have used iPhoto for several years, and thought I'd give the competition a try.  I've listed below some of iPhoto's shortcomings, which resulted in my  switching to Picassa.  I'm tired of submitting feedback to Apple, and with each new release of iPhoto (and iMovie), critical functionality is still omitted.
    1. iPhoto photo management is horrible.  Other photo management software such
as Picassa or Lightroom allow you to simply import a top level directory,
after which subdirectories with their meaningful names are displayed in
the application.  No such directory hierarchy awareness exists in iPhoto.
    2. Photo management with Picassa is automatic.  If I add or delete individual photos,
or subdirectories in "watched folders", they are automatically updated
       in Picassa.
    3. Picassa and Lightroom are referenced libraries, and work extremely well
in that capacity.  iPhoto does not work well in that capacity, and I've
read many recommendations in these forums to NOT use iPhoto as a reference
library for that reason.  Instead they recommend that you import all of your
photos directly into iPhoto.  The problem with this is that iPhoto will
eventually become bloated and painfully slow.
    4. Picassa allows you to take still snapshots from videos.  Brilliant!  iPhoto
never had this ability.  iMovie actually did have this feature, but Apple
in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the ability to take still
snapshots from movies.  The "workarounds" recommended in numerous forums
is to take a screen shot, or use MPEG Streamclip.  I still cannot believe
       Apple removed this critical functionality.
    5. Picassa allows you to view your photos metadata.
    6. Picassa allows you to select a start point and end point in a video and
export just that small clip.  Nice!
    7. Picassa is free and runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

To each their own, of course.
iPhoto photo management is horrible.  Other photo management software such
as Picassa or Lightroom allow you to simply import a top level directory,
after which subdirectories with their meaningful names are displayed in
the application.  No such directory hierarchy awareness exists in iPhoto
That's not "photo" management, that's file management.  It's one way of doing things. It's a hybrid between using the file system to manage the files while using the app to manage the photos. It's done by the app writing hundreds (and hundreds) of invisible files to the folders. With iPhoto, the app replaces the Finder. As you never access the files via the Finder, where they are stored is of no consequence.
Photo management with Picassa is automatic.  If I add or delete individual photos,
or subdirectories in "watched folders", they are automatically updated
       in Picassa.
Againm you're confusing photos and files. Well here's another way to look at it. File management in iPhoto is automatic. Delete the file from iPhoto and it's automatically remvoed from the disk.
You keep confusing files and the data they contain. If you do that will have issues with iPhoto, sure.
Happily agree that iPhoto is not good with referenced Libraries. Using them is pointless as it's more work for exactly zero benefit. iPhoto will not become "bloated and painfully slow". Why would it? iPhoto stores the files exactly like Picasa does (that's how you spell it btw), in the Finder. Each library can contain 1,000,000 images.
And if that's a key feature for you, then good for you.
How is Picasa at Slideshows? Books? Calendars? Cards? Uploading to Flickr? Facebook? etc?
    5. Picassa allows you to view your photos metadata.
Here's a thing: so does iPhoto.
    6. Picassa allows you to select a start point and end point in a video and
export just that small clip.  Nice!
Pretty sure I can do that with iPhoto too. If not, I know I can do it with iMovie or Quicktime player.
    7. Picassa is free and runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
iPhoto comes free with every mac. And you can be pretty sure that your photos aren't being datamined...
Oh, how is Picasa on integrating with the OS? That whole thing of every photo in your library being available to every app on your machine?

  • Windows xp

Does the problem with windows xp and java only affect java applets/web pages, or would it affect running a java program in dos?
To run a java program on a pc with windows xp, I would need to install JDK only. Is this correct?
    cheers

You need to install even less than the whole JDK. You see, the Java Development Kit includes development tools and a good deal of libraries.
If you're only interested in running Java programs, all you need is the Java Runtime Environment for Windows (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html).
If you only want to run Java applets, just download and install the Java plug-in (http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html).

  • Watching DVD's with external speakers?

We like to watch DVD's on our Air. Is there a way to hook up external speakers? I know the Superdrive won't work through a hub. Any ideas or suggestions?

I don't believe such an adapter exists, as a USB device would need software to control it. The software would not be able to "see" the USB device if it passes through the audio jack. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong and have a link to an appropriate adapter.)
If I may ask, is the built-in speaker not sufficient? Or are you trying to hook up the MBA to a large screen TV? If the later, then a simple cable to connect the headphone jack to the TV would be the simplest.
Even just some models of "basic" MP3 powered speakers are very good and are of reasonable cost. I have some off-brand powered speakers that were supposed to match the shape and color of the old CRT iMacs. I got them for $30 new several years ago, when the CRT iMacs where still being sold. The speakers have very good clean bass, not mushy, and are much louder than anything I've heard for under $50, yet still have quite good mid-range clarity. My point is that you may just want to try shopping for some different speakers as you may find some really good ones for a decent price.

  • HT4906 Why would a pro photographer use the latest iPhoto and Photo Stream?

I don't use Aperture.  The upgrade to the latest and greatest iPhoto is a reasonable cost, but I have heard complaints about it all.
      Thank you!
    Diane

    No and No.
iPhoto is not good with Referenced libraries, and so will hardly scale to the volume of images a pro is likely to have. It also has comsumer level tools for processing.
As for complaints: do you mean at the App store etc? If so those reviews aren't worth the paper they're not written on.
The problems with them are manifold: for a start, happy people are less likely to review, unhappy happy are much more inclined to. That's why we don't have thousands and thousands of posts on this forum from all the people who have no problems saying "look I have no problems". Unhappy people get cross and are more likely to express that anger in negative reviews.
Then what about the reviewer? What is his or her knowledge, experience and skill level? No doubt they are having problems, and real ones, but how do you know if their issues are problems with the app, their own inexperience, third party conflicts and so on. I've seen people on here claim the fact that iPhoto won't edit video is a bug. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of posts from folks on here who are certain they've found a bug, only for their glitch to be resolved. No review is worth anything unless you know something of the reviewer, his or her knowledge and experience.
So frankly, I never bother with those reviews on any such stores, not just iPhoto on the Mac App Store.
