Good ide for gui's

i am looking for a good easy to use ide for creating gui's. I am having a look at forte at the moment but it seems quite difficult to use. whats jbuilder like? any other good one's???

the whole point about this post is to find a goodide
so i dont have to build the gui from
scratch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think GUI builders are useful unless you know
and understand how layout managers work, otherwise you
cannot make manual adjustments.I agree with that. Its not just as simple as drag-and-drop, as java isn't like VB, and you are constrained in certain ways by the language when it comes to graphics.
You will not be able to get your head around GridBagLayout (the only choice for any GUI More complex than a couple buttons) in the IDE if you don't know what it does to the code.

  • IDE for gui development

    Does any one know a good ide for java gui development other than JBuilder...
    thanks

    I use both JBuilder and Eclipse, but to be honest, I never created a GUI with any of them. In my experience, at least some GUI-creators produce a lot of junk - the GUIs always looked different during runtime than they did in the editor window. Do it like I do and manually code them.

  • Is a time capsule a good idea for a college student living in a dorm?

    Is a time capsule a good idea for a college student living in a dorm?

    Before you buy......you need to check with the school to see if they allow wireless routers in the dorms, or on campus at all.
    Most schools prohibt the use of wireless routers due to interference issues.
    Even if the school might allow this, there is no way to know in advance how well this might work....and frankly this type of setup is difficult, even if you have a friend who "knows computers".
    If it were me, I would purchase a hard drive for backups....just like you do now.... and send an email once or twice a week to the student to remind them to "backup".

  • Free ide for gui programming

    can someone tell me what's the best free java ide for gui programming?

    No one can answer the question of which one is better. It's like answering the question - is red more beautiful than yellow?
    I can however say that the plugins into eclipse which lets you build swing ui by drag and drop are not mature, and I don't think they work if you modify the code by hand, and then want to go back into "drag % drop" mode. The ui builder in jbuilder is nice, and doesn't clutter the code, and it works even if you have modified the code by hand.

  • Reccomend a good IDE for Win95

    I desparately need a good IDE for my old Win95 laptop. I've been trying to do a lot of Java development on this pentium II IBM thinkpad 600 and getting nowhere. Right now I have JBuilder4 foundation installed on it and it's horrible. The code insight doesn't always work. The garbage collector brings all development (typing included) to a halt. Maybe someone can show me how to either fine tune JBuilder4 foundation for Win95 development or reccomend a good free IDE that I could use to replace it. I use Eclipse at work and that's the best but it's too fat for Win95. I just tried to install eclipse on my poor laptop and it won't even get past the splash screen. Help!

    Check out my freeware IDE Gel at http://www.gexperts.com . It is natively compiled for Windows so it is light and fast. It includes most common features such as code assistants (code completion, parameter hints, javadoc identifier, etc) for Java and Jsp, smart project management, integrated source control, etc. You can see screenshots at http://www.gexperts.com/features.html

  • Good IDE for JSP/Servlets Development

    Guys, I was looking for a good IDE for JSP/Sevlets development. I for myself wouldn't need or atleast wouldn't want to have one, but for our production they say they need one. So please can u guys advise one. I have downloaded and tried JDeveloper but it just hangs, dont know but looks like its too memory intensive. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance

    IBM's Websphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD) is a good one. It can also connect to any CVS servers, which allows you to control the versions. Hope this may help you...

  • Is this a good idea for house keeping? (re: render files)

    I have half a dozen or so projects that I am all finished with, and want to make some disc space.
    I am thinking a good way to make some is to delete all render files for a project, then open i and just re-render all so only actual files used in the timeline take up space.
    Is there any reason why this isn't a good idea?
    cheers

    Not that I can think of.

  • Any good IDE for J2ME/MIDI programming ?

    Hi
    I am new to the J2ME world. I have to develope a GUI based application on iPAQ4350. But I am not given any ramp up time with awt programming. So I am wondering whether there is any good IDE ( like VB Editor ) with all standard widget ( like button, textfield etc) which I choose and create my GUI.
    Someone please post.

    You can try Sun One Studio Mobile Edition, but even this does not provide you with visual development of GUI like buttons, drag and drop.....This is J2me World honey, learn to be small....

  • Should I use an IDE for GUI development?

    I have never wrote a GUI before and am wondering if I should use an IDE such as Glade (or something else) or if I should write everything by hand?  I want to develop with GTK.  What do you guys suggest?
    EDIT:
    Also the reason I was thinking of using GTK was because I am making a front end for a project I wrote in C.  From looking around it seems people like QT over GTK.  Is it difficult to use QT (C++) with C code?
    Thanks

    A lot of informal polls I've seen indicate coding GUIs by hand is more common than using a designer.  That said, there is nothing "wrong" with using a designer and they can be extremely helpful in some projects.
    To put it simply--try both and find what works best for you and your project. That is what you should use.
    Same goes for using an IDE.  If Vim gives you everything you want, great.  If you love Eclipse and use it for everything, well that's great too.  Choice FTW!!
    No one can make these decisions for you (except your boss... )

  • Would this be a good idea for saving some space on 1st drive?

    I have sort of run out of space on my original drive
    until i can get more RAM so that it may stop spinning beach balls.. the space taken up is nowhere near the max, but it's obvious I need to speed it up a bit, asi can here the processor working overtime... (I have the stock 1GB, but I should be using 2GB to 4GB of RAM!)
    My new second drive is now where the backup of the first drive resides (YAY!)
    My question is, what should I do to put stuff from the first drive that is taking up so much space, onto the second drive?
    I was thinking this is the best way:
    1) Make an alias of each thing I can move temporaraily to the second drive.
    2) Place the aliases on the desktop instead of the actual files themselves.
    3) Make a folder for the actual files called:
    "Stuff i would rather keep on my desktop if i had enough RAM" and put them all in that folder.
    4) Move that folder to the second drive until i get more RAM.
    I am guessing the second drive is only active with RAM when i use it as the main desktop drive.
    Maybe there is a better way.. ? thank you

    Hi doofmaczemy,
    I just want to help clear some things up as you may be confused about what is happening on your computer.
    1. Are you short on hard disk space or RAM? You say the space taken up is nowhere near the max, so I wonder if what you really need is just more RAM.
    RAM is used by the computer to store information about currently running programs and the operating system. You don't necessarily use RAM directly as a user (ie to store files, etc).
    Hard Disk space is used by you directly to store all your files, programs and operating system. When you save a video file on your computer it is taking up Hard Disk space.
    2. If you have, say, over 10GB of Hard Disk space left you should be OK. You say you can hear the processor working overtime. The processor is actually silent in its operation. You are most likely hearing your Hard Disk reading and writing data. If it's making a lot of noise, this probably means you are swapping out RAM memory onto your Hard Disk due to low RAM. So this is a sign that, yes, you do need more RAM.
    3. All of your ideas 1 to 4 aren't very good at all. Using aliases is generally a bad plan for using files. What I would suggest is, if you really are short on Hard Disk space, finding out what is taking up all your space. There must be something. It'll most likely be music or video. Then, just move all that music or video on to your new drive.

  • Any ideas for GUI status manipulation?

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement with me, which I'm not able to figure out how to achieve. Here goes:
    There's a transaction in ERP system (CO11N) which was originally not designed (it seems) to be used with CALL TRANSACTION kind of way. But now a requirement is to call it that way... I guess I can do that anyway by passing the SET PARAMETER for the key input fields...
    But there's also another requirement that when calling the transaction this way, make sure two of the application toolbar buttons should be disabled. And they should be enabled when the transaction is called directly from the command bar (as /nCO11N).
    I don't have any set/get parameters to check for and disable/enable the GUI status Fcodes with it...
    Can someone please give me some pointers as to how this can be achieved?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mithun.

    Hello Jonathan,
    Thanks a lot for the quick tip.
    I thought of this technique as well... But then figured that using this 'export to memory' technique is not a very recommended way...
    Thus I want to keep this way as a last resort for the time being... But would like to know if there is any better way to achieve the same effect without using the shared memory sort of technique.

  • Would it not be a good idea for Apple to block an iPhone from being restored if in lost mode?

    Surely there should be more protection against this kind of thing. I lost my iPhone at the weekend, I believe it fell out of my pocket when I slipped over. I have searched for it where I slipped but cannot find it anywhere so I can only assume someone has picked it up. I immediately went on to iCloud to try and locate the phone, which worked for about a minute until the phone ran out of battery. The location backed up my suspicion that it had been picked up. I then turned on lost mode hoping that it may secure my phone a bit, to later find out that all it takes is for someone to restore the phone on iTunes and I won't be able to track it anymore.
    I hope that the person that found my phone may be a good Samaritan and either hand it to the police or if they manage to charge it will see the message I have attempted to leave on lock mode and return it to me, however, I fear that will not be the case.
    Would it be that hard for Apple to implement something that would stop a phone from being restored, when in lock mode, until the phone has lock mode turned off?

    In the second and third paragraphs where I mentioned 'lock mode' I actually meant to write 'lost mode!'

  • Good ideas for pattern design to achieve small code size?

    Hi there,
    i am developing a benchmark set for testing Java performance on J2ME. As this is for resource-constrained devices (PDA, cellphone), the code's size should be as small as possible.
    Here is the funny question: for example i have a class with name "LoopBenchmark", it has its own configuration such as "loop times", "operationType". The main program, running on a desktop could judge the configuration and load the class, Say with following snippet:
    switch(operationType) {
    case: ASSIGNMENT
    for (int i = 0; i < loopTimes; i++)
    int test = 123;
    break;
    case: ADDITION
    for (int i = 0; i < loopTimes; i++)
    int test = 3+7;
    break;
    case: MULTIPLICATION
    for (int i = 0; i < loopTimes; i++)
    int test = 3*7;
    break;
    default:
    System.out.println("unknown operation type");
    I want to create a JAR which could be load to a PDA and running there later. Of course, i hope the JAR could be as small as possible. How can i get just for example:
    for (int i = 0; i < loopTimes; i++)
    int test = 3+7;
    if i know already from the configuration that user wants to run addtion only? I don't want to pack all such SWITCH-CASE handling into the JAR file. Any ideas?
    cheers,
    eedych

    i think that what YATArchivist said goes further than that..
    int switchSelector=2;
    switch(switchSelector){
    case: 0
    //effectively not compiled
    case: 1
    //effectively not compiled
    case: 2
    //yeah you will get this bit
    .....its a guess bassed on faith in the compiler, i admit, but worth a look
    very possible to do, and even 20 year old compilers did this, so i see no reaon why java wont, they would calculate the range of values a variable may have at any point and issue warnings if your program was going to generate errors/ contain redundant code

  • OTAP any good ideas for content ?

    hi,
    I support the cisco wireless network at a city hospital and have been interested to read about OTAP which seemingly is a method of distributing updates and content to wireless devices.
    we run cisco 7921g`s and would like any feedback or ideas as to the types of things that may be of interest or use (im not talking specifics but methods) i.e news updates / bulletins
    does it work like that i.e is that the best way to deliver news updates or messages to an IP phone.
    sorry if this is a strange suggestion but if i have the feature sets i may aswell use them !
    many thanks

    Hi Megz,
    As far as I know, OTAP is only used as a means of WLC Discovery for AP's.
