Good, inexpensive printer (and ink replacement cartridges)

I am in search of a good, easy to use, with inexpensive ink cartridge replacements, printer for a Mac Mini. I have looked at so many on my own, I am now totally confused. Since I also now have to buy an external CD/DVD, I guess that may or may not play a huge part in what I can actually spend for the printer.
Do they come with connection wires?? I`ve not a clue. My Mini does have Firewire, or doesn`t that matter? I think I read somewhere on the boards that hooking the external CD/DVD is best through the Firewire ... yes, no? Does the CD/DVD come with connection wires?
I guess these are enough question for now. Any knowledgeable help would be greatly appreciated. I didn`t see this topic in the list .. though I may have missed it.
Thanks in advance .. Murphy

Typically, printers do not come with connection cables. Most require a USB cable. One cable source is http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?spcDB=10303&spcWord=USB+Cable&keywo rd=usb .
On printers, I prefer printers that have individual color tanks, so I can replace specific colors as they run out. However, the lower cost end of printers typically have combination tanks - these aren't bad, just you replace it when one color is empty. I've been very pleased with Canon printers with good functions, good print quality, reasonable prices, good support. Online, check Amazon.com, Newegg.com, or use one of the price comparison engines like nextag.com, shopping.com, pricegrabber.com, etc. Amazon and Newegg both have user comments which I've found helpful. On Canon, I'd look at any of the 3 Pixma IPxxxx models, which they have 3 under $100.

  • Need a good, inexpensive printer

We are need of a new, inexpensive printer.  We have a Mac OS X 10.6.8.  We are currently using a Canon MX340.  The printer works fine, but there is no option to choose black and white printing...not in Pages, Numbers, or for an internet page.  It does everything in color.  We had an older printer that did black and white with the Mac, with no problem at all.  Because of how many coupons I print though, we eat up the color ink cartridge every month.  Other than that, we don't print a lot.  We mainly print my coupons, tickets to events, and a few internet pages here and there.  I just want to option to print things in black and white.  It won't print in grayscale (or whatever the Mac equivalent is).  So, we use massive amounts of black and color ink on every page.
I have talked to Apple and Canon.  Both say it is the other's issue.  Just want to be done with this printer.
Any recommendations for inexpensive printers (less than $100) that you know will give you the option to print in black and white AND choose the type of draft that you want?

You can buy most major brand home use style printers for very little. That's because they know their profit will come in the consumables.
If your usual need is for black and white I would go for a laser printer, and I wouldn't be too retiscent about buying an older laser like an HP 4050n or something similar off eBay. We have this older HP, the cartridges seem to last forever and are really cheap to replace. Our printer tech says "those things are built like a tank".
We also have a new Dell 1250c color laser (actually the newer LED technology). Once again cheap to buy, cartridges run about $70 for each color but do last a long time.
I don't think I'll ever fall into the trap of color inkjets again.
I believe the bottom line is look at the cost of consumables.

  • I cannot print a pdf-file normally, parts are good (good black printed) and parts are very light

Some parts of my page i can read some parts i cannot, that is, the text is much to light.
Mostly it happens with PDF-files and email and internet, i use the hp laserjet P1006

Yes i tried with new reader version 11.0.8, If i print file using these two reader versions 9.1 and 11.0.8 are giving good print exactly like in the file but the only problem is from c# program using 'DDE Commands' if i send the same file to the same printer this print looks differently ('colors shift and the black text prints a lot darker'') for sample code please see my first message. Do i need to change any thing in my code? Please do the needful.

  • HP printer 5510 not printing black ink after new cartridges installed

having an issue with the black ink not printing at all..Brand new HP cartridges.  cleaned screen with hot water  vent is open

    Hi 6043kmb,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 5510, you are unable to print in black ink after replacing the cartridge.
I would like you to continue here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
I hope to hear from you soon.

My HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One does not print black ink but the color ink is working perfectly fine even though the ink status shows that there is black ink left. After I've changed a new black ink cartridge, it will start to work again but after one day it stop printing black ink again. I've only printed a page the previous day and the ink status shows that there's black ink left in it (close to full). Hello,
Not printing black in.  Cartridge is installed correctly.  I went through the document that was post "black in not printing" (e.g. cartridge is not clogged, orange cap is off, etc.).  I've cleaned printer heads 4 times.  I've reinstalled drivers.  Nothing.

  • Won't print black ink

HP5510 All In One.  Printer started printing in very light blueish gray ink.  Changed the black cartridge (NEW HP ISSUED not refurbished) and it still didn't work.  Cleaned printeheads, aligned printer, unplugged printer and still didn't work.  I then ran out of yellow ink so I replaced it and it still wouldn't print black.  Then I ran out of blue ink working on all these issues and replaced blue cartridge now it won;t print at all.  I have repeated all the above steps. Now my magenta ink is low.
When this problem started all the colored cartridges were close to full. The ink has been depleted with repeatedly following the directions to correct the black ink issue.
I have put the printer in greyscale, black ink only and still the issue is unresolved.  The printer is not in warranty.

  • Epson Claria Ink Replacement

Thought I'd check-in here to see if anyone had any recommendations/experience with Epson printer Claria ink replacement. I've done some looking into this and the practice (of going with OEM replacement cartridges/ink) seems fairly ubiquitous/common. I'm looking to replace the cartridges in one of my Artisan 1430 printers and the following after-market ink sites seems to have decent replacement kits for this printer [links removed by moderator]
Has anyone else done this? Anyone have any experience with the above vendors and their dye sets? Any issues I should be aware of before following through with this?

The big drawback is in ICC profiling. Epson's inbuilt profiles (and third-party paper profiles for an Epson printer) all assume you're using Epson's ink, so the proofs will usually be out of whack when you're using off-brand cartridges or refills. I tried a bunch and typically the red/cyan tones were all over the place, so skies were... amusing. If you have a colorimeter you can always build your own custom profile for any combination of printer/ink/paper, but most people don't.
Personally I use off-brand inks on the old Stylus printer that whaps out stuff like invoices and it's never been a problem in terms of clogging up (though the ink levels on Epson's monitor utility are sometimes a little skittish). I'll buy whatever's cheapest, don't care. In the past I tried home refills, but it's a lot of faffing about and the unbranded cartridges aren't much more. I do have one of the little "chip resetter" tools so I can stop the thing wailing at me if Cyan's empty.
The printer I use for photos gets Claria ink, mostly so I know the soft proofs are accurate, but since everything that comes out of that tray is destined for sale, quality and reliability matter - someone asks for a reprint in 6 months, they expect identical colors. I could probably get the same results with off-brand ink if I calibrated everything and ran a bunch of tests, but it's not worth the hassle.

  • Ink, Toner, Cartridge & Printhead issues

I have a HP psc 1210 all in one printer.  The other day the error light came up to say that my ink cartridge needed changing.  I changed my black ink cartridge but still the light came up, so I then changed the coloured ink cartridge but still the light came up.  I know I have put in the right ink cartridges and they have both  been correctly inserted.. they also  move smoothly across when I open the door so nothing is jamed.  Also I cannot turn off the printer and have to remove the power lead to do this.  I have tried all HPs solutions.  I have removed power cable in the back and reinserted, I have cleaned the printheads as described etc etc. So, currently the lights on my computer printer are as follows: Yellow (on/resume) button lit, but not flashing Red  (check print cartridge) button flashing Large E (error) button lit up Size button lit up Paper type button lit up Black button lit up Colour button lit up      -    Please can someone assist me with this.

  • Printer and paper profiles

I use Photoshop CS on a Mac G4 (PPC) with OS X 10.4.11. My printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R340 inkjet with 6 colours.
I set out a couple of days ago to print a lot of greeting cards — A5 cards that fold to A6. The ones I got were matte ones, which I had never used before. I used the 'Print with preview' option with the following settings: Color Management / Document: Adobe RGB (1998) / Proof (not checked): U.S. Sheetfed Uncoated v2 / Intent: Relative Colorimetric / Black Point Compensation not checked.
Since I believe that my Epson SPR340 printer has the same colour characteristics as the SPR350, I chose a profile from the available Epson SPR350 profiles; namely MPHW (which is for heavy-weight matte paper). The results were terrible, with pale, washed-out colours. After hours of experimentation, during which I used up almost my entire stock of cards, I discovered that I could get good results (but with slightly overemphasised reds) with the same profile as the default proof profile (which, however, I have not checked), namely U.S. Sheetfed Uncoated v2,and even better results with the Epson Standard RGB – Gamma 1.8 profile.
I have now ordered a new supply of cards, but glossy ones, with which I have a little more experience, so I shall have to experiment some more, though these cards are supposed to be in the post in the next day or two in time to be delivered for Christmas. But I should be immensely grateful for any explanation or advice: why did the profile for my type of printer and matte paper, printing on matte cards, give such terrible results? What profile should I use for my new glossy cards? (My instinct would be to use the SPR350 profile PGPP, i.e. for premium glossy paper, but my experience with the matte cards has made me sceptical.) Any other information about profiles that anyone is able to offer?
    Thank you in anticipation.

Totally to be expected, Michael.  One can't do that, not even remotely!
The profile, if not custom made for your specific combination of paper, ink and printer, MUST be provided by the paper manufacturer for each specific printer model, and it will only be good for that particular printer, using the same ink on that particular paper.
    You can't "approximate".
Never buy a paper for which the vendor cannot supply you with a specific profile for your particular printer and ink.  It's that simple.

  • Mac compatible mobile printer and scanner

We have a macbook pro and macbook air and need a good mobile printer and scanner while traveling.  any suggestions?

For travel printer you can't beat the Canon Pixma IP100. However a printer-scanner combo you might look at HP envy series. The scanner makes the unit much bigger.
