Good install here!

Had a good install on my MBP 2.16, 2gb RAM, 250gb HD. I did do a superduper backup prior to the install but I did NOT stop some of my "extensions".
I thought I might be hosed but they worked fine.
I'm running the following little addons:
MenuMeters - Gives CPU activity in menu
YouControl Desktops - virtual desktops (now have spaces too!)
YouControl - Hot spot menu
Meridian - Better clock
A better finder rename - Now appears in the "more" menu
LaunchBar - Quick launcher
SMCFanControl
I've tested Entourage, Excel, Parallels 3.x 5160, FireFox, RealBasic2007 R4, iChat.
Everything seems to be working well!
Thanks Apple!
All of the above are functioning fine.

Doing a happy Snoopy dance here as well. Installed in 40 minutes which surprised me as I wiped the drive and started fresh. Other versions took over an hour.
Have not installed any 3rd party apps yet but have noticed a minor annoyance...
I cannot import my Address book backup. I thought I'd be able to to just dump it from my iPhone back into Address Book but I can't find a way to do that. I reached for the backup I made last night...it did nothing. No big deal, I booted back into Tiger (Used Super Duper to clone my drive last night) and went into Address Book and exported another version of the database. Boot back into Leopard...open AB, try to import...nothing.
Anyone have idea how to get my addresses back?
Off to se now if Adobe CS 3 works **crossing fingers.**

  • The good install that has gone horribly wrong

I have identical iMacs in the house. New 2.8 gHz aluminum models. The day that Leopard came out, we bought a family pack since we have 4 machines capable of running of the OS.
The only two we've updated so far are the iMacs. While the initial install went what one would consider flawless (upgrade after backing up data), its only now that we've started having problems.
After working on setting up permissions for folder/file sharing (home network and all), NOTHING could be accessed, moved, or deleted WITHOUT requiring authentication. Tried for countless hours to try and fix the permissions on the disks to match the working iMac and to no avail could NOT add admin user back to the drives (internal drive + 2 external drives). Don't ask - I dont know HOW it got dropped. It was there one minute and gone the next after file sharing got turned on.
So, backed up what was important (since the TimeMachine drive got hosed as well), and did a reinstall.
Attempt number 1 - Same boat - using just simple reinstall tactics. No permissions fixed
Attempt number 2 - Wipe internal drive - install Leopard. While it fixes the internal drive permissions, the external drives were still hosed.
At this point, copied everything from the external drive to the internal and reformatted the drive with success (restoring permissions), so THAT is good to go.
Trashed TimeMachine backups, reformatted drive. Success with restoring permissions.
Now here's the problem. Since the 2nd install attempt was a clean wipe of the drive and a reinstall of the OS, you can now throw NOTHING away. Everytime you try and empty the trash or move anything even into the trash you get prompted for your password as if its an Administrator action.
Has ANYONE run into this and what can be done to fix it?
I am contemplating restoring the system with the original 10.4 disks and then upgrading to Leopard and not worrying about sharing any folders over the network until this is solved.

First rule in using these forums is to search them. Try permissions, ownership, authentication, etc. There're many topics addressing the problem. See these:

  • Another Mac failure to install - here's the log

I've been through all of the threads here - several times.
Checked what seems to be all of the solutions posted by others. AIR
still will not install on my OSX 10.4.11 intel MacBook Pro
    HERE IS THE
LOG I was running the previous version along with an
application with no problems. When I needed to upgrade I
uninstalled, again with no apparent issues. The subsequent upgrade
install of 1.1 has failed from the beginning. Please help, I have
purchased an expensive application that has been rendered
    useless.

This is resolved. I followed Pickle Jar's thread and deleted
certificates from my keychain specifically the X509Anchors. In
addition, removed the Apple Console certificate from the System
certs. I left a few that I knew I needed for specialized access but
deleted everything else. Rebooted, redownloaded AIR, and it
    installed!

  • Is MBP a good choice here?

My son is looking at getting a MacBook pro, after several years of pc laptops (lenovo, etc). He is not a gamer, but is inclined to have a lot of tabs open at once, download music, maybe movies. His previous laptops have died at about the four year point.  I know this is a broad question, but is there an average lifespan for a MBP? My iMac desktops have had long lifespans, but i dont know anything about laptops.
Also, when do newest models of MBP typically come out?
    Many, many thanks in advance,
    Jane

Macbooks and Windows Notebooks generally have the same lifespan.....
It's all about how once treats their notebook.  I still have my late 08 Macbook Uni that works great and will be passing it to my niece.
Like any other electronics out there, no one can really tell which will last longer.  Anything can happen.
I own a few Macbooks and a few windows notebooks.  To this day, they all work.
Macbooks generally come out with new models every year.  The same as windows notebook.
I suggest you compare price versus brands.
The cheapest 13 Inch Macbook Pro is $1200 - for that price you can buy 2 windows based notebook and still have some cash left over to buy some accessories.
Am I suggesting you should buy a windows notebook?  Nope......
Am I then suggesting you buy a Macbook Pro?  Not really....
I suggest you purchase one based on weighing the Pro's and Con's of each notebook.
Some will say that a Macbook Pro is better than a Windows Notebook - I am one of them.
Some will say that a Windows Notebook is better than a Macbook - That's based on the fact that there are more programs out there made for windows.
It's all up to you.  It's hard to say one is better than the other - This will be a long debate.
Last - how old is your son and does he need to be using a $1200 Macbook Pro if a $400 Windows Notebook can do the same job.
Good luck - and i'm sure other users will put in their .02 cents in too.

  • If You Had a Good Install, Say "I".

I know some times things do not go smooth, but I just wanted to say that I think Apple did a very good job with SL. It works just like they said it would for me(at least so far;-))

  • Enterprise CC Acrobat XI won't install. It looks like a good install, but no sign of it!

I have put numerous packages on a suite of various up to date Macs, all of which have installed successfully.
Lastly, I try to put on Acrobat Pro and although it says Successful installation, there is no sign of it anywhere.
When I do a search, the only thing I can find is the uninstaller!
    Any ideas?

Thanks Bill, but I didn't find my answer in there either.
Helen, I've got it working using the following method.
Using the Packager, I selected "Custom settings"
I unticked the "Disable Adobe Creative Cloud desktop application" box.
I reinstalled under the "Build" folder,
I then installed over that from the "Exceptions" folder (which was empty under the previous package).
On build, it asked for a serial, which wouldn't accept my enterprise serial so I used the trial version.
On successful build, it opened and I have a trial period of 37 THOUSAND days before it stops working.
That should see me to retirement!

  • Been testing with my new Vista 64 install here's what I found

Some one correct if I'm wrong but I've been doign alot of testing since adding Vista 64 to my computer. There's been alot of speculation about Vista 64 and possible benefits to premiere. From what I can tell there are none. Besides Photoshop being 64bit native.
The 'Vista 64 difference' is only comes into play with After Effects because it can spawn multiple versions for each core using 3 gigs Ram each. (easily checkable in the Vista Task Manager)
My question is why didn't hey make Adobe Media Encoder the same way?
After effects doesn't make you render with AME and if you render an After Effects file in Vista 64 and with only 6 gigs of ram it renders a good bit faster than in Adobe Media Encoder.
With this in mind, if you render your Premiere project with After Effect Dynamic linked files, it will render slower than if you imported the whole thing into After Effects and just did a render from there. Unless you want to make a DVD (you still can't encode MPEG with AE, probably a save money license thing).

Hey Josh Townsend, I have a good idea, lets go to adobe.com, and type in the search bar "feature request" and fill out the form on implementing that feature into the adobe media encoder, so that it will render just as fast.
If we don't make our requests known, adobe can't act on them!
P.S. AE has the same multi-core functionality on XP-32 so the question you might ask yourself is why go with Vista, when XP is clearly better!

  • I live in pakistan and i downloaded ibooks from the apps store and it's good but here's the catch i can only download free books from the ibooks store not the one's that have to be paid what should i do?

I live in pakisan and i downloaded ibooks and it's pretty awsoem but here's the catch it doesnt download books that r to be paid for but it does download the free ones. My cousin came frm the usa (she also has an iphone) and she didnt knew what to do she said that it works fine like her does but cant download the the books that r not free and doesnt even shows the books except for the free ones.

No, we told you why you could get the paid books in the Pakistani iTunes Store; because Apple has not been able to obtain the rights to sell them there. There is no "fix", in Settings or anywhere else, to that problem. You cannot purchase paid iBooks in Pakistan, and you cannot use another country's iTunes Store.
You did not ask any other questions that I can see.
And you're being a bit rude in your replies, though perhaps that is due to an incomplete mastery of English and not intended to be impolite.

  • Good install - but QT doesn't open

I did a complete install without any errors. I try to start quicktime and it never opens. I went through all the suggested troubleshooting to no avail.
I can open the control panel but when I try to use anything on the control panel I get this error ...
An exception error occurred while trying to run Shell32.dll,Control_Rundll" "c:\Program Files\Quicktime\QTSystem\Quicktime.cpl"
Any ideas on how to get QuickTime to run would be greatly appreciated.
    Rick

okay. let's try swapping out your QuickTime one more time.
head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall QuickTime.
now, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll try to get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • Good Article Here...

    http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2548&p=1
While this deals primarily with OC'ing a system, it also gives some insight into what kind of quality parts that you should stuff your box with - like RAM, PSU's & etc.
Especially useful if you're just getting started in the "hobby".
Of course all you "gurus" & "uber clockers" already know this stuff!

thanks for the info, the Oracle website has a lot of good articles, but finding them can be a challange

  • My C drive is 19.5 GB. xp sp3 took 5.05 GB.Firefox also installed here . There's no room for new downloaded files. So I changed the save to option in another drive. Still when downloading large files 'low disk space' message shown.

suppose I want to download a 4 or 5 GB file,in C:/ there is usually 2 or 3 GB left.So I changed the directory of saved files to E:/.Still low space problem occurs and the newly downloaded file is not saved.A low disk space message is shown. Why is this showing? How to resolve this?

in options under the "general" tab change the download folder,if that does not help change the option to "ask every time".I recommended to use DAP to download your files its great and accelerates your speed quite a lot.

  • Shortly after loading, the latest version, downloaded and installed here 5/22/13, reports an error with ntdll.dll forcing a shutdown.  Apple's temporary work around works for me; launch  Itunes while first pressing  and holding CtrlShift keys ...

This  startsitunes in it's own  "safe mode", allowing normal functions.

By running in safe mode the plug-ins are not running. The issue may be caused by a plug-in.

  • Are they some good typist here?

Do you look at your keyboard when you do type fast? Or not, as you would do with your computer?

I was able to type 60 wpm without ever looking at the keyboard on a manual (non-electric) typewriter. I suspect that I'm even faster on a computer keyboard. However, it's a whole new ball game with an iPad. First, it's essential that I look and second, my rate is probably in the range of 5-10 wpm.
