Good Luck with System Maintenance

Good Luck to Mark W. and team on this midnight scheduled system maintenance.
Looking forward to see my "My Posts" windows straighten back.
Regards,
Mike

Glad to hear that, but somehow my "MY POSTS" window still not in order.
But that is not a crucial issue for me, just to keep posted.

  • RAM: Has anyone else had good luck with Corsair?

First of all, thanks Bas and Scottg26 for pointing out the correct version of Memtest86+.
I know that Corsair has a crappy rep around this forum when it comes to the Athlon 64.  However, I've had nothing but good luck so far (knock on wood).  I've been up and running for almost a month now with no BSODs and the computer has booted every time so far.  I'm using Corsair TwinX 1024 LL in slots 1 and 2 with the speed settings on Auto in the BIOS with a voltage of 2.6.  I've run Prime95 for up to 10 hours or so with no errors and I just ran one pass of Memtest86+ v1.00 with no errors.  It took 18:50 and showed the following settings:
    Memory: 1024M  1447MB/S
    Settings: RAM: 200Mhz(DDR 400) / CAS:2-3-2-6 / Single Channel (64 Bits)
However, I will point out that the only real world test it's really passed so far is playing Call of Duty.
Here's a link to the actual RAM on NewEgg:  http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-435&catalog=147&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1
Is anyone else happy with their Corsair RAM so far or did I just get extremely lucky?

Yeah They are neat at that. Question is how well do they overclock?
I'm getting a 28Mhz fsb overclock out of these dimms that I have and They are used I admit, But like the seller said they are great overclockers!

  • Has anyone had any GOOD luck with FileVault?

I'm reading the horror stories here on the forum about FileVault. I just purchased a new Macbook Pro a few days ago. I'm running Leopard 10.5.2. I tried using FileVault for the first time.
I haven't had any problems at all.
I like my files to be secure. Everyone does... I just don't want to run into any problems down the road.
Is anyone here using FileVault and not encountering any problems? Should I just leave good enough alone and keep using it?
    Thanks!

I completely disagree with a brody. I've been using FileVault for years. I need it to protect proprietary data on my system. I want the backup to be encrypted. Backups should be encrypted in my opinion. There is no access to the data without a key I possess. Have you read Bruce Schneier's opinion on these matters?
    http://www.schneier.com/essay-199.html
The plural of anecdote is not data. Of course you'll hear horror stories here. There is no substitute for a good backup/restore strategy. If you can't handle backup and secure storage of data and passwords, than FileVault is not for you.
Backups are easier with FileVault than without. I can quickly backup my home directory with a simple tar command, and restoring is quick and easy, too.
With the new format in leopard, there are less than 200 files to read and write. I've restored more than once and I have never lost a file. It's easy to migrate an entire home directory to a new account, too. I've done it. Here's the tar command I use to backup my FileVault-protected home dir. I run it from a separate administrative account's home directory:
    sudo tar -v -C .. -c -f ./xxxx.tar xxxx
replace xxxx with your "short" user name. The '-C ..' makes the working directory of the tar /Users on an OS X system. The backup is written to xxxx.tar. The tar file easily be copied or burned to a dvd.
I toggle FileVault on/off to ensure the data integrity. It's easy, and takes about ten minutes, so I do it once/wk. I'm going to do it after I post this.
Are there any reports of "data corruption" or loss with the new sparsebundle format in leopard? I'm not aware of any.

  • I have not had good luck with downloads and need to get information on problems I might encounter with this download.

I am overwhelmed with all the updates, changes to new servers, etc. seems like it's everyday. I have had to bring my computer back from blue ( actually more like Northern Lights) screen(s) 3 times in the last 5 months. All crashes have been associated with a download, upgrade, etc. Once with Norton, once with Yahoo, and Java continues to cause me problems. I have a Compaq laptop running Windows Vista (I think), using Internet Explorer 9, using microsoft security (firewall, etc) and Panda virus. My current wireless provider is Comcast --but I can't afford the super fast connection anymore. I am continually having problems with Internet explorer just shutting down or going REEEAALLY slow. I figure it's probably from an update, or add-on, or some nasty "ruin your computer fun" gift from a hacker. But I can't figure how to pinpoint where the problem is.
I don't mean to sound like I'm helpless, but I am not very computer savvy. I am a 52 year old mom who loves having a virtual library at her finger tips and wants to be safe on the net. Thank you for assisting me.

Thanks for taking time to respond and for the info on the two free scanners.
I do believe I finally uninstalled Norton - I'll check again. I had AVG for awhile and I unstalled that when I downloaded Panda. The microsoft system security is supposed to alert you when there is a system conflict -- the key words here are SUPPOSED TO.
I am very leary of downloading/installing/updating anything. For a couple of reasons -- one --if there is a system conflict, a virus, bad cookie (probably doesn't even go well with milk), etc -- I don't know how to fix it. I bumble through somehow, probably creating more messes than I had, or at least different ones. If there's a BIG problem and support is needed . . . Did I say SUPPORT?? Panda was the only company that actually spent time with me. Microsoft, HP,
Norton, Comcast, Motorola (modem), and a couple of others ALL refused to help me because it wasn't their problem !!
So is having Firefox as my default browser a good thing or bad?? Will I then have to update/download all different kinds of programs. Yahoo is my email provider and my microsoft email is not currently set up. I have used Firefox before, but not on this computer.
Are there any other programs I should be aware of that might conflict with Firefox.
Are there any ADD-ON's, drivers, plug-ins that might create problems ( I really don't understand all the previous terminology, I just know those are the areas where the problems are always occuring.
Thanks again for your time and information.
    God Bless You, Tami (tamaroo47)

  • Good luck with the forum + ePub feature request

Good idea about the new forum! I'm sure it will thrive.
EPub creation in InDesign has advanced by leaps and bounds. Last week I created a fairly heavily illustrated fiction ePub out of InDesign in "one sitting", and -- amazingly -- without having to touch the resulting ePub in an external editor!  (This was a book that I had typeset for print in InDesign as well, so of course that makes it easier.) Just a little custom CSS, and some custom paragraph styles and object export settings. I think that's great, and thanks to Douglas Waterfall who is clearly doing an amazing job, plus is very attentive to listening to users' requests and ideas.
Avoiding the use of an external editor is in my opinion very desirable, and currently, InDesign's Achilles heel when it comes to that is the navigation pane. The navigation pane is constructed according to a TOC that the user has created in InDesign, but not everything can be created with an InDesign TOC.
On the most basic level, chapters in the actual ePub might be formatted as so:
    CHAPTER 1
    Trains
    CHAPTER 2
    Planes
    CHAPTER 3
    Automobiles
... but in the nav. pane, one would prefer:
    1. Trains
    2. Planes
    3. Automobiles
As far as I'm aware, the only way to achieve that currently is by opening up the ePub after export with an external editor and editing the nav pane manually.
So if InDesign could offer some way to have more flexibility with that, and avoid the need to edit externally, that would be great.
    Ariel
PS And of course, some sort of live preview when editing for ePubs in InDesign is also crucial.
PPS I still can't help wondering if a separate Adobe ePub editor wouldn't be better than foisting it all on InDesign. Obviously, this ePub editor should be able to open InDesign files.

You have a wonderful positive attitude, Pierre, but two things:
    1.  They shouldn't be a work in progress - they should be polished and complete.  As it is it gives people the impression that the company's products are unpolished and lacking in function.
    2.  We may have a say, through threads like this one, but it rarely seems to make any difference.  Again that seems to reflect Adobe's overall current philosophy for product development and release...  Consider the fact that they virtually always plan to release what they already have built - even though people may feed back many problem reports during beta testing.  It happened with the Photoshop CS6 beta, it happens with the Camera Raw betas, and we have this forum software that, despite being released in an unfinished state, isn't being actively modified per anyone's requests.
There's only one good reason for exposing unfinished software - to solicit feedback to help find what's unfinished and prioritize what needs to be done to finish it.
    It's not working, Adobe.

  • USB PRINT SERVER... Anyone had GOOD luck with one ???

I want to add a couple different USB printers, a scanner and ext drive to my home network. I want to find a good USB interface that will be hard wired to my router.
I've seen some units with 1, 2 & 4 USB ports. Some will handle all functions, others just printing.
    Any ideas?

    Check out Linksys.

  • Good luck with this one folks..

Just came back from vacation and dowloaded my photos to Iphoto in Guest status.  ( I did not realize I was logged into guest until much too late) I logged off and the photos are gone. I let the laptop wipe my SD Card as well.  Tried to recover from the SD Card..Apple does a good job of deleting items....Ouch.  Two weeks and 1000 photos gone like that.  Any ideas? My stupidity definately, however I think the engineers should have built some redundancies in to alert you when you are dealing with this much data.  Why it even alows me to sync my I pad to a guest profile is beyond me....I think I have the perfect storm here....So it goes.
Any last ditch efforts will be taken..ideas?

A quick google search turns up many "recovery services".  I've not used any of these but here's one:

  • How to Launch a "setup.exe" with LabVIEW app? No luck with System Exec.vi

I've got an application that I'm trying to update with a separate LabVIEW application (the "Updater"). It's the "Check for Updates" capability you see on other major apps.
Here's the glitch: When the Updater tries to launch "setup.exe" using "System Exec.vi", The installer seems to catch the attempt and pops a dialog titled "Windws XP Setup" saying "Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components".  The install does not begin and the installer closes (if it was ever open!).
Running the same installer by double-clicking the "setup.exe" file from windows runs just fine.
Here's the question: "How can a LabView app launch an installer?"

    Could you show the code.
Look at the path where you want to run the code.

  • Has anyone else honestly had GOOD luck with the Kin TwoM?

I recently purchased a Refurb Kin TwoM off ebay...I havent yet activated it but I did want to pass this along to others (as I was curious about) that I WAS able to take my old Samsung Intensity to a VZW Store and they transferred all my contacts within about 5 minutes! I wanted to make sure that would work first before anything!  Also, I tested out the wifi @ home and Mcdonalds and it connected just fine!..its like a Wifi-Enable Mp3 player right now and it only cost me $40, so hopefully once i fully activate it the actual PHONE will work!  There are a few quirks Ive noticed like others have pointed out..such as the screen lock doesnt actually lock the volume controls on the side....and the browser is awesome for a basic phone but isnt quite as smooth or 'fluid' for webpages like our Ipod Touch is...(but you really shouldnt compare it to any smart' devices that like) Im not sure if its true for all Kin's but I havent been able to play videos offline like Youtube? anyone else have this issue? I also wish with there were some simple Apps like FB / Twitter/ Maps available but I suppose I cant expect too much!

I know I'm tempting fate by posting this, but yes, I've been quite happy with my KIN TWOm.
I got mine originally in June, 2011. A couple of weeks later, it dropped from the holster on a dirt path and must have hit a pebble or something, because a small section of the screen stopped working. VZW sent me a "Certified" replacement (cost me $99 because of the apparent physical damage), and it has been performing fine for the past 13 months.
Sure, there are some software quirks (It's Microsoft, remember?) but the benefits clearly outweigh those.  Probably the thing I miss most is the lack of any voice recording/command function.  But I love that it has WiFi, and the nice camera and 8GB memory let me take over 400 pictures when my normal camera was stolen on the second day of a trip to Europe.  The Zune music player is nice as well, and the e-mail client, while limited in function, is much nicer than the one on my previous phone.
As for the actual phone functions, I text more than I talk, and the physical keyboard is very nice for that. As for voice calls, I do that pretty seldom, but have not had any problem with dropped calls, volume, etc.
OK, the big elephant in the room is the "black screen" that seems to affect so many people. It's happened to me a few times as well. I think my background as a computer guy has helped me deal with this.  When this has happened to me, it's always been when the device was "sleeping", and just didn't want to wake up. Like maybe it wasn't recognizing the interrupt from the "back" button. In those cases, I've found that holding the button down a little longer, opening the keyboard, or briefly pressing the power button will get its attention. Or sometimes I just need to let the device rest for a minute or two and it manages to untie itself.  There have just been a very few times when I've had to do a cold boot (remove/replace the battery).
You also need to be careful as to how you put the device in your pocket or belt holster. Make sure that you don't position it in a way that the power button can be accidentally pressed when you sit down. There have been a few times when I take the phone out of my pocket and the little power off confirmation box is displayed. If that happens, be careful not to touch "OK" -- unless you want to power off.
Anyway, maybe mine is living on borrowed time, but overall I've been very happy with it so far.
I know there are others who have not had such a good experience, but this thread asked for people who were happy with their KINs, and I am.

  • Anyone having good luck with a G5 Dual 2.5 PPC?

I've been a Mac user for quite a long time going back to my SE30 and I can say that only one time before have I ever had this much trouble; (The first version of OSX).
I have performed every version of the install and the end result is always the same. I'm having severe issues with the Finder crashing and restarting itself. None of the Apple apps work without constantly crashing and me restarting them several times. FYI, I did download the combo 10.5.2 update and apply it myself and I have repaired permissions all along the way. I've even installed each update one at a time just to see if my issues were related to any particular update and it wasn't. I have since gone back to Tiger and my machine runs GREAT! I would really like to upgrade to Leopard without having to purchase a new computer.

Apparently you didn't read my FAQ. RAM can go bad ANYTIME.
RAM errors can not be detected even given the age of the universe in testing time.
If they happen, then you know it is bad. It only takes one sequence of bad registers which you can't test for given the age of the universe to trip up RAM.
And it doesn't necessarily happen on every machine.
I'm really starting to believe that there is an issue with the Dual 2.5 G5/PPC and Leopard that hasn't been addressed yet.
If there were such issues, they would have appeared in testing the computer itself. Apple said all G5s and all G4s of 867 Mhz or faster are supported.
Issues that they can't address are third party issues, as those would also take longer than the age of the universe to test every combination of possible factors.
The fact you had this on an erase and install suggests something is wrong with the hardware of your machine that was undetectable under normal tests.
Only replacing the hardware of the machine (the RAM being the easiest to do since all of it is under lifetime warranty from most manufacturers, and you can get identical spec from numerous manufacturers) will you eliminate the potential problems you are seeing. And those problems you have witnessed are identical to those seen by people who have had issues with RAM.

  • Arch Linux System Maintenance

I have a few questions regarding maintenance of Arch Linux.
I come from Gentoo where I typically execute the following:
    emerge --sync
    emerge -uDNv world
    emerge --depclean
    revdep-rebuild
I suppose emerge --sync && emerge -uDNv world is equivalent to pacman -Syu. But as for emerge --depclean, I have not seen what command could be used to find stray/obsoleted dependencies and have them removed. Should I be using pacman -Rs <package_name> every time I want to delete a package?
revdep-rebuild probably does not apply to Arch Linux as it is binary based.
Additionally, I was wondering if there are more things I should do to ensure that my installation is healthy. Any help/tips would be appreciated.

For most users Archlinux is not a pure binary distro in practice.  We need packages from AUR for a complete system.  On my Arch system today I see that that there are 182 binary packages available in abs/core, 1957 packages in abs/extra, and 2340 packages in abs/community; so there are a total of 4479 binary packages available in Archlinux.  By comparison my Gentoo system has 17348 packages available in portage, and more packages available in various overlays, and they are all updated properly by emerge -auDN @world.
There are 41182 source-based packages available in my copy of Archlinux's AUR.  Unfortunately pacman -Syu does not know how to update AUR packages and they may be left with dangling references to libraries that got updated out from under them.
AUR packages tend to get broken by updates.  So we do need something like revdep-rebuild but so far as I know we don't have any equivalent maintenance tool.  I use my own script for checking my system for AUR packages that need to be rebuilt:
    #!/bin/sh
    # check all binaries in /usr/bin for any with "not found"
    # library links
    cd /usr/bin
for file in $(find . -type f -executable -readable)
    do
    ldd $file | grep "not found" >/dev/null && echo -n $file " links to an missing library " && \
echo "(rebuild `pacman -Qq --owns $file`)"
    done
Good luck with your new Archlinux system.
Thanks very much, I added that script to my system! I am half surprised that something like this doesn't exist natively in pacman.

Welcome from a fellow Gentoo refugee !  I miss that distribution sometimes, but I love Archlinux; mostly because it does not seem to suffer the sort of bit rot with age as does Gentoo.  I recall that subtle changes in use flags could come back to bite weeks later when you update something seemingly unrelated (especially +doc) Spend some time around here and you will find that housekeeping is really not an issue.  I do still build custom kernels and don't use initrd; one cannot completely break old habits
Good to see some former Gentoo users here. I still use Gentoo as my desktop OS, but my new Ultrabook will have to use Arch Linux. I'd rather not kill the life of the SSD by constantly compiling packages (not to mention that the emerge times for installing something trivial could get stupid on a laptop). I've been doing as much reading as I can to get familiarized with Arch Linux and I am liking everything so far. It is a nice change to go to a binary distro that isn't Ubuntu.

  • Can anyone help with a good system maintenance tool for ML

Does any one have any suggestions for a good dependable all-in-one system maintenance tool for ML and is it straight forward and easy to use?
    Thanks in advance .....

You really have no need for one. That said:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.)
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion or later.)
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.

Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space.

  • Automated system maintenance timing

iMac early 2008, 2GB RAM, 2.8GHz processor, HD 320 GB total, 225GB available, OS 10.6.8
Whilst researching various causes for a Mac running slowly, I came across the statement that automated system maintenance procedures are scheduled by default to occur in "the early morning" hours, provided that the computer is running 24/7.  If I were to leave my computer on, it would go into sleep mode, as would I, during these early morning hours (assuming this to mean 1am etc.). Do the automated processes indeed occur in the 1am range and if so, will they happen if the computer is in sleep mode?

Sorry that you feel that precision is not required in dealing with a modern
operating system, and that the obsolete answer appears to fit your ideas
on how to maintain a Mavericks system when compared to an older one.
On more than one occasion, advice has been suggested without bearing.
So be it with your interest in getting an answer that fits Mavericks 10.9
since the factors that did change for this new system, are not addressed
by the reply you sought to include as a correct response.
And, I also gave you a bonus tip on a historically correct (to Mavericks)
source of content that can be used with Mavericks for issues of a slow mac.
Too bad I wasted some time and research, on your behalf. If I weren't
working for free, I'd bill you double, and offer you to try a retail product.
Your understanding of an answer has not been helpful to a resolution.
However it does appear you did not read the link that supports my point:
This is current to Mavericks, cited by Pondini as of now:
On Snow Leopard 10.6.x and Later, if your Mac is powered-on but sleeping
during those hours, the scripts will run shortly after it awakes.
If you do not want current information on OS X 10.9.5, why ask and
accept info that was OK prior to Lion 10.7.5 & think that's current??
Is english your first language? I can try google translate if it helps...

2.1. Check System Preferences > Universal Access > Keyboard and assure Slow Keys is Off.
2.2. You might also want to check Activity Monitor to see if some process is consuming high CPU. See also my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ for a variety of troubleshooting and optimizing tips regarding Mac OS X performance.
2.3. Finally, you might also want to note what you mean by "type in text boxes." For example, in Web forms, specific applications, etc. The more specific you can be concerning the circumstances under which the problem occurs, the better.Good luck!

    Hello Helpful Forum
I upgraded to system 10.4.4 (then .5 and .6) on my 17in POWERBOOK 1.67. What a mistake. Not only does Garageband 3.0 or 3.0.1 not load but the Help feature in every program crashes whenver I try to use it. The BACKUP application for my .mac account also just spins the beachball and quits. I have repaired permissions, rebooted in SAFE mode, tunrned off Log-in items: all to no avail. Any suggestions as to why this systme upgrade screws up several APPLE applications?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for your suggesitons. Unfortunately none of them solved the problem so I went back to the starting line and reinstalled the original system 10.4 then upgraded to 10.3.9 and then reinstalled Garageband from iLife 06. The application opened. Unfortunately some websites on Safari do not open as usual so it is another round of troubleshooting. Tiger has bitten me once too often. sigh

    Hi Paul,
i would suggest using single user mode.
Restart your computer. When the screen goes black,
hold down the "apple" key and the "S" key until you
get a black screen with white letters. When the
prompt shows up, type this exactly:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Notice the space before the -fy.
If this doesn't work, you should boot from your
system install CD/DVD or most recent OS install
CD/DVD and run Disk Utility to repair the disk and
    repair the permissions.
Good luck and let us know how it works.
