Good mouse for a powerbook?

I'm leaving home to go to college soon and I decided to get a second hand powerbook to replace my bumbling old pc. It's all great, I just need a good (fairly cleap) usb mouse for it as I can't stand trackpads. Are there compatability issues with third party mice? Any recomendations 'd be swell.

I have/use 4 different cordless mice and 2 USB mice. I never use the USB mice anymore because I like the freedom of cordless. In any case, any USB mouse should work fine at the basic level, but on some you may not be able to program all the extra buttons, at least not without added shareware.
I have 2 favorites; one is the Logitech Wheelman (cordless) which you actually operate with your thumb (can program its 3 buttons, has scroll wheel, and is a nice change up if your mouse hand gets overused). It's for right handers only.
The other is, believe it or not, a Microsoft mouse, the Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000. It has 4 buttons to program, is shaped more like a regular mouse, but smaller, so I can rest my hand on it and it's almost like just resting my hand/arm on the arm of the chair, until I decide to move the mouse. It also has this cool "zoom" button which you press and zoom the display as large as you want; simply press the button again and all is back to normal size. Scroll wheel also has sideways scrolling.
I have both set up to use at the same time, the Logitech in my right hand and the Microsoft in my left, so I can switch hands easily and give one hand a rest (carpal tunnel). I also like having two for their different functions, tracking, feel, and thumb vs "regular" mouse.

Apple mice have always been awful; I only ever liked the +ADB Mouse II+.
I'm very happy with my Microsoft Intellimouse Optical six years on. The five buttons work really well with Dashboard, Exposé (and Spaces) and worked just as well back in OS9. The cable is also a decent length. I've also got a wireless version (1000) in grey/white with just three buttons, although the transceiver is quite chunky.
Here's a five button Bluetooth version (link) that I've got my eye on at the moment.

Mouse for G4 Powerbook

Having just purchased a MacBook Pro, I have given my old G4 Powerbook to my daughter. She says she would like to use it with a mouse. What is the best mouse to get for it? It is running OS 10.3.9.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

That's really a personal preference. Have her go to a store which has displays of mice (Best Buy, Office Max, etc.) and let her find the one that feels the best to her. I have at least 9 mice, 4 of them within reach right now that I use daily. I use different mice for different purposes, some for right hand, some for left. Consider which features she might want/need, such as wired vs wireless, trackball vs regular mouse style, scroll wheel, programmable buttons, size, etc. I doubt I'll ever buy another corded mouse, wireless is much less hassle. I also doubt I'll ever buy another rechargeable mouse, too much hassle, batt dies sometimes and have to switch to another mouse instead of just replacing batt. I don't know if they even sell mice which operate with the rolling ball underneath (as opposed to LED/laser) but if they do, there are very few reasons a person would want one. I have 2 trackball type mice, but they operate with the thumb, which took a short time to get used to, but now they are my favorite mice. I have another "air mouse" that I use for giving presentations and other situations where it isn't practical to set the mouse down on a surface to use it. As far as quality, it would be difficult to find one that won't function just fine.

Just wondered which BT mouse set up you guys can recommend. I understand the Mighty Mouse is not compatable with 10.3 and as an Apple Newbie, I want to make sure I buy the correct one.

New Macbook a good replacement for 12" Powerbook?

I think, besides the inch in display difference, that the new macbook WOULD HAVE made a GREAT GREAT GREAT replacement for users loving or wanting the portability, yet pro versatility of the old 12" Powerbooks. I think however that Apple has missed the mark in one BIG BIG WAY! Firewire. People who wanted something like the 12" powerbook wanted the power of the Macbook Pro in a smaller package. Apple hit the nail on the head with incorporating the same graphics performance, by using aluminum, by making it lighter, and by putting in the illuminated keyboard (only in the 2.4 model though). But on the last detail, they missed it. Firewire. there is no workaround. period. Why preload the systems with iMovie when you can't import video from MOST modern digital camcorders? WITHOUT EVEN introducing a new port with adapters (like they did with the Display Port). I think I would've sold my old macbook pro and had instantly purchased the new macbook if Apple had just included that one VITAL port. I would even prefer them putting it in the place of one of the two USB ports. But without being able to import video from my NEW minidv, there is just no way i could buy that macbook and call myself a proud mac owner. What kind of digital hub would that be? Isn't your slogan "works right out of the box."...? what do you guys think about the new macbook being a 12" powerbook replacement??

I have the same situation. I wanted to upgrade from my 12" Powerbook and would move up to the 13" screen of the new MacBook (15" is much too big for my needs). Another family member has the 15" Powerbook and has always liked my smaller size. I was ready to order 2 of the 13" MacBooks and was then stunned to see that Firewire was missing. I have a Sony DV camcorder for movies. It appears Apple expects me to use my old Powerbooks to input the video into iMovie and then transfer it over to my new MacBook. This is not the cutting edge Apple Computer Company that I have been a customer of for 25 years.
If Apple wants to add firewire to the new MacBooks, develop a USB / Ethernet to firewire adapter, or add a 13" MacBook Pro (w/ firewire) to the line-up, they will have a customer. Otherwise, I will hold onto my old Powerbooks until this is corrected.

I didn't like the multi-colour flashing led, so replaced it for a constant blue one.
Life is so much easier with right click. The scroll works as intended and the scroll push down button even works with the odd game of Halo
You don't need to break the bank to have a good mouse.

What's the best BT mouse out there for my powerbook?

HI. I need a bluetooth mouse for my wife to use in photoshop. She is using a 17 inch powerbook. The mighty mouse gets bad reviews, so I'm not interested in it and she's not really interested in a tablet/mouse combo. If anyone has some suggestions, please let me know.

i've used the kensington "pilotmouse mini bluetooth" for almost a year, this is with a 17" powerbook
no problems at all
the power consumption means running it on rechargeables, unless you want to spend a lot on batteries, but i think all bt mice have this issue
unlike some bt mice, it does have a proper on/off switch, which saves battery life

Yes, that Powerbook can be used to make music or edit video clips. When it was new, it was required at the North Carolina School of the Arts for their Film program, using Final Cut software. Having a more powerful Intel CPU would speed up the rendering and processing times, however, the 1.67Ghz Powerbook can certainly handle video editing.
I know people that have used Garageband on it to make music.
The last operating system you can run on it is OS X 10.5 Leopard, with the last release being 10.5.8.
It's RAM is maxed out at 2GB.
As long as you don't need newer software that requires an Intel processor and aren't going to rely on that as your system to access streaming video's on the internet, it should work for you.

I need a mouse for this all purposes:
1)Reduce using the build in trackpad(to protect my built in trackpad)
2)Sometime I want casual gaming(Simcity,ps1 game, some other point and shoot game)
3)I 'm 183cm tall, so my hand is quite big, and I use my macbook pro as my primary pc, so need a all day use mouse(but I use my mac only about 3 hour a day).

As everyone's hands are different, I'd suggest going to any store with computer accessories and simply trying the feel of whatever brands of mice they sell.

Hi all. Well first off, let me start by saying that my whole life I've owned PC's. And I'm not hacker Elliet. But I've gotten to know them pretty well. All the way from Windows 3.1 that came out a long time ago (more than 10 years ago)
So after a while of hearing about MAC's I decided to start small and get an iPod (since they are so popular here in NYC) and see what apple was about. Well I really saw that Apple had a great product and started asking about their computers. And did plenty of research. And before the new Intel Macs came out, I was going to get a powerbook. But I had a feeling a new laptop was coming out and waited a lil while and sure enough. The Macbook Pro came out. So I went out and did all my research (as to this being the first real purchase of a Apple product and knew about the possible implications of a new first gen Intel chip in a apple product litterally making history) I knew I might become a new beta tester.
So I started looking on these boards and did 2 weeks worth of hard research to see if the Mac Book Pro (MBP) was for me. And after all the problems i saw (ex: The whine, Right speaker distortion, heat coming from it, white line at bottom of screen, etc) I never saw or read anything about AOL connectivity problems. And I know, I know... alot of you are probably going to gripe and complain about AOL sucking and yada yada yada, but please. Cut me some slack. I actually like AOL. I got on it back in 92 when it came out, and really enjoyed it. And have been on it since. I like chatting on there, and so forth. And I hope you help with my problem instead of telling me to go get "a real ISP" I do have a real ISP, but I like my AOL too.
So now to my problem....
I have a Sony Viao 1.8ghz PC with 512 ram, 80 gig hard drive, 10/100 ethernet port. Connected to a Belkin Router (more info below on specs of router) connected to Opt Online Broadband Cable internet with VoIP. I use my macbook pro on the wireless network at my home.
I got a mac book pro 1.83 ghz running 512 ram on Tiger OSX 10.4.6 I thought that I would wait till a connectivity patch (which I thought would have been 10.4.6) fix the airport problems came out till I posted something. But now that I've tried everything, I'm hoping you open this thread and help me and possibly someone else out there as well. I just d/l'd and installed the 10.4.6 update last night and it did'nt help. So here's more info on my specs. I have a belkin router wireless G 2.4 ghz 54mbs router and I have configured the router with it's firewall, wap2 encryption (as it's the only selection the router has that is available that matches what airport comes with in encryption) I hid my network, and have tried to upgrade the firmware on the router.
Now Here's the real problem. I can connect to AOL on my MBP when I connect the actual ethernet cable to the MBP's Ethernet port (after I have let the cable modem do a hard reset to configure itself to a mac) I can connect to AOL. But when I disconnect the cable and return it to it's normal config, I can't connect to AOL. I can connect to the internet via safari, and firefox, and even AOL's IM on iChat. I can use Itunes all kinds of things. I can even play warcraft 3 wirelessly on battlenet. But connecting to AOL is a pain in the @$$. It's the only proggy I have that won't allow it to connect. I keep getting the error message "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." Of course All i see for a while is the spinning black and white circle. And it goes through step 1 and 2, goes straight to 6. Then it goes blank, and BAM! That message pops up. And what's so frustrating is that I've tried every possible configuration on AOL, my router and even system preferences, for it to let connect. I even went into system preferences on the mac and went down the the Internet & Network "Sharing" icon and tried 100 possible combinations on that in the services tab, and firewall tab. I've turned them on, off, tried to make exceptions ETC. And no matter how much I play with the personal file sharing and windows sharing advanced settings and sigh every possible combination to make AOL connect via wirelessly. And nothing. I then even tried to fix the connection under AOL in setup. I've gone through and selected TCP Script, Airport Script. Cable Script, And practically every script I can think of. And nothing. I even went on to AOL and downloaded thier alleged fix to wireless accessing AOL. And nothing. I've been searching all over google, AOL's website, and all over these discussion boards and no mention of anyone even having the same problem. But please, someone out there with their infinit knowledge of how Macs run and having more experience than me, Please make this a good experiance for my first post on any board anywhere reguarding a mac. A MBP at that too.
An update to this, But amazingly enough, I actually got it to connect to AOL wirelessly for the first time yest. But I have no Idea how i did it. I tried for 3 hours to reproduce it and no luck. I was accessing my router at it's website config screen and somehow I clicked on connect to AOL and while it was trying to connect to it, i reset the router and BAM, it connected to AOL. And I was in shock. I thought I solved it. Somewhere while it was reseting the router it connected and stayed connected to AOL till I signed off and tried to sign back on to see if I could now connect, and guess what. The same dumb message keeps popping up "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." And all I did was sign off to test it, thinking I had fixed the problem. I tried for 3 hours like I stated above, and BAM got it connected to AOL wirelessly again (somehow while the router was resetting). And thinking I fixed it, or figured out the trick to getting it to work, signed off... I kissed aol goodbye again. And have been unable to reproduce the "glitch". SIGH Can someone out there please help me?
I think I've made this message as detailed as possible, but please, can someone give me some constructive criticism on how to fix my AOL wireless connectivity problems. Do you know if it's my router? My MBP? AOL software? BTW, I got AOL software version 10.3.7 (Rev 4136.310 US) The latest version I D/L'ed from the AOL website. Anyone know If I should turn on or off some things such as personal fire sharing on, or firewall off or on? ANYTHING. Please. I've put alot of time into writing this post and making it as detailed as possible. And been having this problem for the past 3 weeks that I've had my MBP, and have waited long enough to use my AOL. If you need any further information or suggestions on making AOL work, please let me know. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this, and I really appreciate all of you in the time you take in responding back in trying to help me. I'll be monitoring this post almost hourly. FYI for the rest of you that might be having the same problem. DON'T USE A BELKIN ROUTER WITH AOL ON A MBP!!!!! It ***** wirelessly. or even hard connected, it won't connect. I went to best buy today, and got a refund on the belkin. I then went to J&R and got a D-Link router. And now it works perfect. I can now chat on AOL yet again, and I tried all the other web browsers I have and messengers, and warcraft 3 online via battlenet. And it works great. I want to give you guys a special thanks for taking time out to answer back to my post. FYI! Belkin wireless G routers do not connect you to AOL wirelessly on MBP's. No matter how much you mess around on them. I highly recommend a D-Link Router. They are easy to set up as long as you READ ( AND I MEAN IT!!!) read the instructions before you set anything up on it. Use the CD that it comes with, and you'll be good to go. Set it up and it works great Almost no dead zones in the house, and now I can use the MBP with all it's cababilities. Thanks people. I really appreciate it.
P.S. I called belkin last night when i decided to get a refund on my router for today and when i talked to the tech, after puersuading him to tell me the truth. And stop BS'ing me, he broke down and admited that AOL does not work wirelessly on MBP's. So to make a long story short this time, There you go. And one last note, I'm very happy now with my d-link router. I honestly thought it would suck. Not being a brand name router or anything. But amazingly, it works like a brand name item! FYI: You've not stated which of your listed Macs is having the problem. However, the following may help in any case:
1. Did you install Front Row using the Front Row hack on a Mac that did not ship from the factory with Front Row installed? If so, See my "Uninstalling the Front Row hack" FAQ. This has been known to cause a variety of problems, including the menu bar (Clock, Spotlight) issues you noted.
2. If you did not install the Front Row Hack, an incompatible or corrupted Startup or Login Item may be partly to blame for the problems with the menu bar. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
3. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
4. Re: Safari and Mail, if not sorted by any of the above, see also:• "Safari: Blank icon after installing Security Update 2006-002 v1.0."

Can an iMAC computer be used as a display for the Powerbook laptop? Could I use the iMac keyboard plugged into the Powerbook and maybe the iMac mouse as well?

Where can I buy an airPort extreme caed for my powerbook? are they even available, if not how can I go wireless ?

eBay is a good source, though as ever, buy wisely and make sure you get the right card for your specific model.
Alternatively there are wireless cards available that go in the card slot. Again eBay is full of them but be sure they're OSX compatible - its a good idea to put this phrase in your search terms.

It just plugged straight in and was recognised as an Airport Card. This is from the UK site but I'm sure you can find the same thing wherever you live, or at that price just have it shipped.

[SOLVED] Tiling wm that supports keychains and good mouse support

I hope I'm not bringing up old questions but I couldn't really find anything useful using the search
Basically I'm searching for a new tiling wm that supports a few things, namely:
Keychains, absolutely necessary, dwm and i3 didn't seem to have this feature or I overlooked it
good mouse support, hard to say when mouse support is good but configurable menus would be nice
config files that aren't written in lua, ruby or whatnot wouldn't hurt either
I'm using pekwm at the moment (screw the *boxes), an excellent wm, but it's no tiler...
looking forward to useful answers

I doubt that you're going to have much success finding a tiling manager with all of that baked in; most twms are made by minimalists and seem to eschew extra programs, unlike gnome and KDE.
yeah I know, but pekwm is also pretty minimal and supports keychains

You might be able to use xbindkeys to set up keychains, but it won't be trivial since you'll have to write a guile scheme config file and implement the keychaining logic on your own.
I'm pretty sure I won't have enough time and skills to do that
