Good PDF Printer/Writer?

I am looking for a good Mac PDF printer/writer.
One of the main features I need is when I save a PDF file, if the file name already exists I have the option to replace the file or append the pages from the current file to the start or end of the other document.
My PC does this very well with an app called PDF Camp but my Mac searching has proved fruitless.
Can you help?

As I said above....
One of the main features I need is when I save a PDF file, if the file name already exists I have the option to replace the file or append the pages from the current file to the start or end of the other document.
The built in PDF printer does not allow you to merge documents. If I did the action above, the built in PDF printer would just overwrite the file and not give me the option to merge the two file together.
I know I can do this with automator but it makes a one step process a cumbersome task.

  • How to install just the Adobe 7 Writer PDF printer

In our environment we need to be able to print to PDF, but we also have a 3rd party formcreation software that needs Adobe 8 reader to capture digitized signagtures.
After testing we have found out that we need to have the PDF printer functionality of Writer 7, and the digitized signature capture ability from 8.  Problem is that the 7 install (no matter ther order of installation) take priority over the 8 install and does not let us use 8 to sign the document.
the ideal fix is being able to install just the pdf printer from 7 Writer.

Nope, still using users HD space and bandwidth. The official June 17th release is still downloading and installing both 32-bit & 64-bit.
Double copies of CC apps installed - Why, and how to delete?

  • Adobe PDF (Print) presets: "Cannot create the file. The folder may be write protected."

In Windows 8, this feature of InDesign CS6 only works for the local Administrator account:
File -> Export -> Save as type: Adobe PDF (Print) -> Save -> Save Preset... -> OK
If you try it with any other account this error message is given: "Cannot create the file. The folder may be write protected."
For anyone else encountering this problem, a workaround is to run as administrator.

Which permissions exactly did you set, how did you set them and what did you set them to?
The path to the Drop Box would be /Users/someuser/Public/Drop Box but you obviously wouldn't want the ownership and permissions to be the same on all four directories.
Have you tried using Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) to repair permissions? That would probably be the best way to ensure they're correct.

  • Adobe PDF printer  - Use VBA??

I am using Microsoft Access 2003 and have Acrobat 7 (Adobe PDF) and Acrobat 5 (Adobe PDF Writer) installed on my machine.   I can print to the Adobe PDF printer by using this code:
    Set Application.Printer = Application.Printers("Adobe PDF")
    DoCmd.OpenReport strReport, acViewNormal, , , acHidden
I am trying to figure out if there is a way to use an Acrobat object to set the path and document name without user intervention (which the code above requires as a dialog pops up requesting that information).
So, I am pretty good at figuring out how to use the various properties and methods of objects but I am just not sure WHICH objects I should be dealing with and I got lost in trying to read the SDK.
Can anyone provide at least a push in the right direction?
    Bob
P.S. If I posted this to the wrong forum or category, please do not just tell me that I did, but let me know where it should go.  I posted this originally to the wrong place and was told so, but I had to use a private message to the employee (who told me I had posted to the wrong place and locked the thread) in order to find out that THIS might be the proper location.

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 - PDF Printer still not working & Distiller crashes on startup!!!

    Hello,
when 8.1.2 update was released my hopes where great but now I'm realy disappointed!!!
After 3 times reinstalling CS3 Suite (incl. clean cs) and updateing for hours NOTHING seems to be fixed! Oh, well, the bouncing icon seems to be but maybe just because I'm not using Acrobat any more...
Here's a summary of my specs and the problems I have:
    OSX 10.5.2 on a Intel 8-core MAC Pro w. 4 GB Ram
Suitcase Fusion (also for System Fonts)
    CS3 Premium w. latest Update(s)
    Xpress 7 + Love Bundle
Country settings: Lang. German, country Austria
    Installed Hardware:
    Superdrive
    ATI Radeon graphic card
Mighty Mouse wireless + New wireless Apple keyboard
    24" DELL TFT monitor
    2 x 500 Gb HDD's
The main problem is that I HAVE TO create print PDFs from Xpress doc's wich is impossible without Distiller!
The 8.1.2 update seems to fix the "pausing PDF printer Problem", now the PDF printer sends the PS file to Distiller wich just crashes!
Here's the Distiller crash log (looong):

I had a similar problem and finally figured out why (and now to fix it).
    Permissions were messed-up on ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat
I did not have read-write permissions in it and Distiller was failing to create the ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/Distiller 8/FontCache subdirectory.
I simply changed the owner and permission on ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat and the problem went away.

  • Quark / PDF Printing Problems (Save as PDF in OS X)

I upgraded from Quark 4.1 to 6.5 about a year ago, and ever since then the files I create and print don't look as good. The primary issue seems to be color -- colors don't come out as deep, there seems to be less color saturation, sometimes colors are just pretty far off. I'm working in Mac OS 10.4.8.
For many years my method has been to design documents and output as PDFs to be professionally printed. These days my PDFs don't print as well. I suspect that the problem has to do with the process of creating the PDF. In Quark 6.5 I create PDFs by selecting "Save as PDF" from Quark's Print menu. Back when I was using 4.1, since Quark didn't have a built-in PDF-creator, I would go into the Chooser, select AdobePS as my printer, and then just choose Print in Quark and it would "print" to a PDF.
One other problem I've had since the upgrade is that the PDFs Quark creates are HUGE files -- tens or hundreds of megs -- often too large to email. When I used to create PDFs from the identical Quark files using 4.1, the resulting PDFs printed much better and were much smaller files (often far less than 1 meg). Solving the color problem is a higher priority for me than solving the file size issue, though.
I've spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this with our local printer here in Albany, NY (the same guy who printed my stuff in the old days, when it came out looking a lot better). Things we've tried that haven't seemed to solve the problem:
    - Increasing the LPI to 300
    - Checking the box for Full Resolution Tiff Output
    - Experimenting with OPI active and not
    - Experimenting with different PDF options like "Save as PDF," "Compress PDF," "PDF-X," etc. (Compress PDF does result in smaller PDFs, but the quality of the resulting prints is even worse)
Also, if anyone has suggestions about Quark-specific forums I could post this to, let me know. I tried creating an account on the discussion forms on Quark's website, but I don't receive their confirmation email to confirm my account.
Any advice greatly appreciated -- thanks so much!

    Marshall,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
colin clarke1’s info is spot on. I will add a bit more. Acrobat Professional includes Distiller in addition to a print driver called Adobe PDF 7.0 (version number matches version of Acrobat). I think the print driver installs automatically, but if not, you should choose to install it and then it will show in your list of printers. This will allow you to make PDFs from Quark XPress much as you did with Quark 4.1.
Distiller comes with some pre-defined Settings (formerly know as Job Options) for different types of printing, i.e., Smallest file (low-resolution like online viewing), Standard, High Quality, Press Quality and others. These Settings are general standards in the industry in terms amount and type of image compression, font embedding, color management, compatibility with previous Acrobat versions and etc.
colin clarke1’s method of saving a Quark doc as a PostScript and then distilling it is one method. (You can set this in your Quark Preferences.) Alternatively, you could do the following within Quark XPress…
    (a) Select Print, which brings up the Print window. At the bottom of the window are some buttons. Click on Page Setup and in its window, for Format for: select the Adobe PDF 7/8, the appropriate Paper size and then OK.
    (b) Returning to the Quark print window, make all the necessary choices for Layout, Setup, Output, Options, Layers, Bleed, OPI and Profiles.
    (c) Next, click on the button Printer (at the bottom) which brings up a Mac OS print window. Click to the right of Printer and select Adobe PDF 7/8. Next, click and hold on Copies & Pages for a drop-down list of options and select PDF Options. Click on the bar to the right of Adobe PDF Settings and a list of Distiller Settings will pop up and select the one that best fit the type of printing you are doing, e.g., Press Quality. If you want to see the PDF version afterwards, then select Acrobat for After PDF Creation. Click Ok.
    (d) Returning to the Quark print window, click Print button (lower right). A Save window appears for you to name your document and select where you wish to save in on your computer. (If you choose to see the PDF afterwards, then Acobat will launch and the PDF will then appear in Acrobat.)
You could learn more about the latest version of Acrobat 8.0 (released November 2006) by Adobe’s “tour” at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/productinfo/features/
    Hope this helps.

  • Output file name in Adobe PDF printer

I am a new user trying to use the Adobe PDF printer to print a large number (34,000+) of single sheet reports from an application that is using ASP web pages with long trash names. The pdf printer tries to name them all 1.pdf. Is there any setting to have it increment the file name so that i do not have to name each of these documents? As you can imagine this would take slightly more time than would be convenient, not to mention the assossiated hand cramps

I am sad to report that apparently Adobe does not do a very good job with the PDF printer. I have just spent over an hour with support to get the answer we can not help you. I guess I will have to spend $50 for NovaPDF to handle my problem. It's a shame when a superior overall product like Acrobat is not able to keep up with the knockoffs on the small things.

  • Acrobat X Pro suddenly no Adobe PDF printer available within applications

I have been using X Pro for 2 months following installation of CS5.5 Premium. I used to be able to print-to-file using the Adobe PDF printer in the print dialog box from within apps such as Word and Finale. Suddenly that option is absent from my print dialog box in all apps.

    Hi Bill,
I'm SO glad I tried your HELP suggestion first because un- and re-installing was going to be my next step and I dreaded it, and now, given the info you provide below, it appears it was a good thing I didn't do it. Thanks for the further information. I keep a log to refer to when gremlins like this pop up and this is going into it ASAP!!!

Great. We often hear of folks having uninstalled and reinstalled and problems not going away. The repair is the first line of defense if you have not been able to track down a problem. The last line is a reinstall. One of the problems with reinstalls is that folks do not clean up the system before the install. That clean up should include removal of all latent folder parts left by Acrobat and also running a registry cleaner (MS used to have one, but it is not longer available -- making CCleaner the typical cleanup). So if you have problems in the future, try to trouble shoot it and come to the forum if you need help. Sometimes, the repair is a quick fix, and lastly with no other answers do the reinstall--BUT with the cleanup along the way. Again, glad it worked for you.

  • After Acrobat 9.4.3 update, Adobe PDF printer hangs

I just updated to Adobe 9.4.3 and tried to print to the PDF printer. The process hangs with about 4 bars on the progress bar. Nothing prints and the original document is also locked up. I've had to close Firefox using Task Manager. MS Office documents provide a program recovery box allowing me to End Now. What on earth is going on now?

I repaired the installation and that seems to have fixed the problem. Thank goodness.

  • Adobe PDF Printer disappearing after 9.4.2 update

A few hours ago I updated Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to 9.4.2, supposedly coming from 9.4.1.
Since then the Adobe PDF Printer is no longer available among my printer options. That is for all applications: Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Preview or ArchiCAD 14.
It seems there's a similar issue with the 9.4.2 Windows upgrade (see Acrobat Windows forums). What now? Deinstall Acrobat? Or how do I revert to a older version?!
    MacBookPro 2009 (5,3), Mac OS X.6.6.

    Ditto...
This is a whole lot of pain  unfortunately. I am sitting here lamenting why oh why did I upgrade?? But then it can only improve right? Whats the harm? Surely this will make things better? After all, it didn't really point out that the Acrobat Printer would no longer be available. I will never again do an upgrade on Acrobat as it has done this  to me before previously and it was a pain to sort out!
Graphics users need the Adobe Acrobat PS Printer as without this we are  not able to set document parametres for print iro commercial printing.  Crop marks, page size, reg marks etc. Which can only be accessed via the  software once the Acrobat PS Printer output option has been selected.
Simply selecting create Postscript file or PDF.... has none of those  attributes and is probably less useful than a chocolate teapot.  certainly not a "Pro" - "Professional" option, but rather meant for the  masses who have basic Acrobat requirements.
I don't really care to get into the realms as to who did what and  whether it was Apples security option or Adobe's upgarde. This outcome  is going to upset a lot of graphics users who have paid good money for  this package as it was originally intended (for the professional with  professional requirements ie PS options) and I for one am annoyed at  software companies changing the rules as time goes on. Its the consumer  that keeps being inconvenienced all the time.
If memory recalls, we have to totally uninstall and reload. But  theres a catch there somewhere if I remember correctly as the  uninstaller does not recognize certain files and if you apply the  reinstall using the older version of Acrobat, residual files from the  newer version create issues. Something like that. Not sure that makes sense to me either. But I remember theres a curve ball there somewhere...
Going to be a long night!
Rule for the future. Don't upgrade.

  • Adobe PDF Printer gone after updating!?

    Good afternoon,
My PDF Printer has literally disappeared after running the automatic update (9.4.4) early this morning.
In fact, the sequence has been like this:
    1. Running InDesign so I keep on working on a project.
    2. Adobe updater pops up
    3. Since I was experimenting random and automatic "pauses" on the PDF printer, I decide it is a good idea to update in the hope this will fix the random pauses.
    4. Work nice as always. PDF creation goes fine, however, random pauses did not go away. Doesn't care too much, at the end it takes only a split second to "resume" the printer back and you're done.
    5. Out to lunch and back
    6. Open same InDesign doc to perform corrections as addressed in client email
    7. Go to print dialog box and... voila! PDF printer is gone...
So, at this point, I go to the printer Apple pref pane and surprisingly, there is NO PDF Printer at all.
Try to add one maually. Worthless, there is nothing to be added. I restart the iMac.
Once back in, try the same. Nothing to add.
Navigate through forums and the web and nothing seems to address such behavior.
I decide to reinstall Acrobat from scratch using the CD. That is, to downgrade. Back to normality. Annoyed, indeed,
So, Has anyone experienced such a thing? Any known solution?
What about the random "pauses" or standby?
    Thanks in advance!!!  ;-)
    Juan.

Thanks for posting Steve, I still have to deep-read these links you provided but I feel like the answer might be there...
Yesterday, in the meantime, I was in a hurry so I just decide to re-install Acrobat from scratch wich blew away the issue.
Seems like Acrobat 9.0.0 does well with MacOs 10.6.1
As far as I have reade in the links, I understand that there will be no more PDF Printer in the future, am I right?
And, I was just wondering, if it is so, we wont have to use Distiller anymore?
Guess I have to invest sometime on this.
    Thanks!

  • PDF printing failing to embed fonts

I am an IT administrator over multiple machines each having various versions of acrobat (pro, std, 7, 8, 9, etc.).  We have a standard job options settings for all machines which forces embedding all fonts used in a document. We do this for compatibility with government entities (they refuse documents having font references without the embedding).  We recently transferred an employee to another machine and setup ver 7 pro on her machine, as she had on her prior machine.  We transferred all her different fonts to the new machine as well.
When she now prints to the adobe print driver using the embedding job options we use on other machines, the resulting PDF contains references to Times Roman and Helvetica (without embedding) showing substituted fonts (which have been embedded).  I understand that without having the fonts on her machine they will never embed, however on her previous machine and other machines in the office the PDF printer merely removes the references and embeds the substitute fonts, giving us a compatible PDF with all embedded fonts.
All the machines are using the same job options, so what setting am I missing that is causing this one machine to refuse to completely substitute the fonts and change the references to reflect only on the fonts which are embedded?  Where else are the fonts given instruction on embedding/substituting?
I should mention, just in case, that these are all windows xp pro machines. Also worth noting: this behavior has occured on this machine with ver 7 std as well as pro, and I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled acrobat to no effect.

Ok, good suggestions I did try the distiller default options before.
    More details:
She is printing a form fillable PDF from her browser. (I have recreated the steps exactly and shown different results on 3 computers with 2 properly embeded).
I have also taken the improperly embedded file and run it through another machine resulting in a properly embedded setup (replacing the non-local fonts with their substitutes without reference to original fonts and embedding the substituted fonts).
    Thanks

    Hello,
When i open for example Word, and try to print from there to the PDF writer like you proposed.
    I select print to file.
There is a warning something about PS fonts. After clicking this away.
There is a error that it is not possible to print but the filename  I have given is Created (.prn)
Opening The distiller, when I click there open. I don’t have the possibility to select my file because the distiller is closing directly without any warning.
When I go to Services , Acrotray is listed.
So the ACrobat 9 is Creation Nothing at all, it is just the main program that i can start, scan from scanner is no problem wut when saving the Actobat is closing.
The acrobat is upated to the latest version.
Is it possible that the Windows XP is corrupt ?
Can you proved me with a solution ?
    Thanks

  • Firefox 28 hangs when I try to print to Acrobat PDF printer

    Hello all!
I have observed a problem when I try to print a webpage in Firefox v28 using the Acrobat PDF Printer (Acrobat Pro 9.5.5) installed in a Virtual Machine (VMware View 5.2) with Windows 7 64 bits. The printing dialog hangs (no response) after the "Save as" pdf dialog. Then I have to force Firefox to close, and afterward a Acrobat PDF conversion dialogs appears with the progress bar stopped at the middle. I also have to close this afterwards.
The others programs (Office, IE, Notepad...) are able to print through the PDF printer without problems. The problem appeared after the automatic update to Firefox v28, since when I downgrade to Firefox v26 the problem disappears.
I checked a similar configuration in a physical computer (W7 64 bits, Acrobat Pro 9.5.5, Firefox v28), and everything runs good, so I think it is a change that happened in Firefox v28 that has some problem with the VM configuration. I also have tried to change the Firefox profile, reset Firefox and reset the printing settings and reinstall Acrobat. No luck.
I would like to know if somebody know some change in Firefox v28 related with the printing or related to some service or update that can have some problem in the virtual machine.
    Any help is welcome!
    Thanks!

When you updated, did you reset the printer settings in '''about:config''' under '''print.print_printer'''?
