Good photo editing software? (a little off topic...)

anyone know of a good program for editing photos and other images in general? i used corel photo-paint on my windows pc, and i really liked the balance between easy-to-use and gets-things-done. i've also used photoshop, but i'm not as big a fan of that. any suggestions as to what i should get for my ibook? if it's free or cheap, that would definitely help.... thanks!

First here are two Apple KB documents that you should be aware of, particularly the second one:
iPhoto Library Description
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder
iPhoto is designed so that the user accesses the photos entirely from within iPhoto and not from the Finder.
You can seamlessly use PSE from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. Go into iPhoto's preferences under the General tab. Under "Double-click photo" select "Open photo in:" and then select PSE. Now when you double-click on a photo PSE will open and open that photo for editing. There is one caveat to all of this, you cannot change the name or extension of the file you're editing. If you edit it as a jpg and save as a jpg file you're safe. If you create a layered image required a change in format and extension to .psd you must save it to the desktop and then import back into iPhoto from there. Other than that it's completely seamless. I use Photoshop 7 as my editor of choice and it works great.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • I am looking for a good photo editing software, only editing, not sharing etc

any recommendation for a good photo editing software for starters, only to enhance picture, play arounf with colours in black and white background etc.

In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • What photo editing software is everyone using and why?

I am trying to find a good photo editing software to use and before spending any money on it would like to hear everyones opinion on what they use and why? Originally I intended on purchasing aperture ... but I am under the impression that aperture is being discontinued so now I am searching again ... thanks for everyones input in advance....

If after trying out iPhoto's editing capabilities for a while you find you want more capability give Adobe Photoshop Elements for Mac a try.  It's reasonably priced and can do about 75% or so of what the full Photoshop can do like these:
There's a free, open source application that's a lot like the full Photoshop: GIMP for Mac.  Another full featured editor along these same lines is Pixelmator.
Some Image Editors That Support layers:
    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
    Pixelmator - $60
    GIMP for Mac - Free
So there are a lot of choices out there to investigate.

  • Photo editing software

    Hi
I have a Mac which I purchased in July 2010 I’m sure it’s running snow leopard. Will I be better off upgrading to the latest OS or staying as I am? The reason I ask is, I am looking into getting some photo editing software either Aperture or Photoshop Lightroom (is Aperture better for Mac?) to move up from the next level of iPhoto. Now I have never had a problem with my Mac in the three and a half years since I have had it and don’t want to do anything that will slow it down or mess it up. Any suggestions would be most welcome. My Mac is: iMac, Intel Core i3, 3.06 GHz, 1 Processor, 1 Core, L2 Cache (per core)  256KB, L3 Cache 4MB, Memory 4GB, Mac OS X version 10.6.8

Aperture and Lightroom are made by Apple and Adobe, respectively. Both are higher end photo management apps for cataloging your photo library. As you note, both are quite a step up from iPhoto.
You can do some editing in both, but nothing like an actual image editor. Photoshop, as Klaus1 mentioned, is expensive. For around $70 online (like at Amazon.com), you can get Photoshop Elements. About 80% of what the full PS app can do for far less. PS Elements does remove CMYK color support.
Pixelmator does a lot for not a whole lot of bucks. GIMP is an open source editor that does much of what Photoshop does, and it's free. Like PS, GIMP has a large learning curve.

  • I'm looking for photo editing software

I am looking for photo editing software that is fairly easy to learn and I also want the feature of adding a splash of color to a black & white photo.  I've seen there is Photoshope Elements and there is Lightroom.  What is recommended?

For editing an Image, as you describe, Photoshop Elements would be my choice.
There is also a very helpful, and active Ps Elements Forum, where you will find easy instructions on doing what you describe, plus much more. Should you go with Ps Elements, that forum is: http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements
In general, if you have a Grayscale Image (B/W), just change the Color Mode to RGB, create a New Layer, and paint in the color that you want. However, since I do not use Ps Elements, there might be some extra things, that will help you get the desired results, and that Ps Elements Forum will be great at helping you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • What graphics/photo editing software do you use with dreamweaver?

I just purchased Dreamweaver CS5 a few days ago.
I'm using the demo version of Fireworks CS5 and have played around a bit with the demo version of photoshop element 8.
I'm wondering if I would be able to do everything with photoshop CS5 that I'm able to do in Fireworks CS5 and photoshop elements.
Guess I could ask this question in the photoshop forum, but I really wanted to hear from developers and designers that use dreamweaver too.
What would you suggest to use for a graphics/photo editing program.
    Thanks,
    jp

Thanks for the input so far.
Here is my thinking. I have used free html editors for years. Mostly first page from http://www.evrsoft.com/.
Then I decided to try the demo of dreamweaver after reading about the new integrated CMS support.
After just a couple weeks of using dreamweaver I purchased it. I like dreamweaver much better then the free editors I have used over the years.
So onto graphics/photo editing software. I have also used simple and free photo editing programs over the years. I have decided to try and learn not only more code, but also try to gain some graphic skills.
Most of what I would be doing would be graphics for the web, but I also need some kind of photo editing tools.
So do I buy just fireworks CS5 and use it for not only graphics, but to also edit photos.
Do I purchase both Fireworks and photoshop elements 9 or should I spend a little more and go with photoshop CS5.
Is photoshop CS5 more stable then fireworks or photoshop elements?
I'm running windows 64 bit system with a i3 and 4 gig of ram with duel monitors.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Photo editing software using Flash Lite

Hi all, I had been searching for an answer to this question
for quite some time and did not find any. Please help. Is it
possible to create a photo editing software using Flash Lite for
Nokia devices? Am expecting features such as brightness, contrast,
cropping, save and load function, etc... I am not expecting to
create it myself, but outsourcing the development.
If you know of any good development house, please let me
    know.

I've used GIMP for years, which is a powerful photo editing program.

  • What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?

What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?
*also, It would be great if I could edit multi-channel audio on the software
    Any suggestions?

probably THE best software is Avid Media Composer. It's an industry standard for Feature Films, Television programs and commercials.
Professional editors and producers around the world have told them what the software needs to succeed.
-More efficient and easy-to-use video editing tools. An open platform that enables you to work with everything you want and integrate into any workflow. More power to eliminate bottlenecks, so you can work faster than ever.
-Create 5.1 and 7.1 surround mixes directly within Media Composer, or import from Pro Tools (watch the video)
I own this NLE and it truly is the best out of all of the editing programs I've used.
** It's quite expensive though. But worth it if you want the best!
    ~$2,499.00
Another option would be Final Cut Pro. The little brother of Avid MC. I have Final Cut Pro X and I am very disappointed with it. It’s not an update of the existing Final Cut, which is one of the most popular programs; it’s completely new and radically redesigned. It looks different, its strengths are different — "and after one day of using it, many professional video editors are running through the streets with pitchforks."
Final Cut Pro X Review - NY Times
** It's a good starting program if you just doing editing that isn't quite as demanding as feature films, TV programs and commercials. Many editors have been moving away from FCP after the release of the current version. However, It is a lot less expensive than Avid MC
    ~$299.99
Personally, having both Media Composer and Final Cut Pro X, I would go for Media Composer if it's in your budget. Definitely worth the price!

  • I have bought Photo Shop Elements some time back . How can I upgrade it with new photo editing software of Adobe ?

Howto upgrade the photoshop Element photo editing software of Adobe

I've never used the Elements side of Photoshop. I've always used Photoshop full version and Lightroom. But from what I read it has a cataloging/viewer and you can make different catalogs and or collections with it ( a catalog and or collection is a collection of images which can be all in one folder or many different folders at the same time or both combined) and that it has the basic to slightly advanced editing functions. Not sure about levels and curves but I would think so. Although it may not have the layers functions like in the full Photoshop.
You can download a Demo of lightroom and use it for 30 days. you just have to deal with the startup screen thatasks Continue Demo or Buy Lighroom. Other then that it is funlly functional.
Depending on whether you do mostly JPG or RAW images the one thing I like about Lightroom is it can edit either JPGs or many different RAW formats without really touching, editing, the original image file. So that is always your Negative, in old Film Speak.
As VilleFromFinland says it really is about how you manage your images. But with iPhoto it wants to Manage them for you. Where they are stored and how you interact with them. Personally I rather put them where and how I want them then have a program that can view edit them.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

  • Other photo editing software for the Mac

Couldn't really find a category to put this question, so please bare with me. I have read some stuff about iPhoto (any version?) sometimes giving problems. Was wondering what other kinds of photo editing software is good to use on Tiger. PhotoShop Elements etc.? I have a Sawtooth 400mHz with 620MB of RAM. My Tiger is the original release: 10.4, but plan on updating to a newer version shortly.
    Thanks.

To add to Larry's list: take a look at Pixelmator also.
These are some of the system requirements for iLife 08:
    "System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor.
iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster). iMovie HD 6 can still be used and is preferred by many of us.
iDVD requires a 733MHz or faster processor.
512MB of RAM; 1GB recommended. High-definition video requires at least 1GB of RAM.
Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later.
    3GB of available disk space.
    DVD drive required for installation.
    QuickTime 7.2 or later.
Burning DVDs requires an Apple SuperDrive or compatible third-party DVD burner. "
It doesn't look like your G3 meets the system requirements. You may be able to install some parts of iLife 08 but I'm not sure. Do a search in this forum for "G3 and iPhoto" or other similar search criteria to see if others have been successful.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo editing software that specifically has tools that stack images?

I want to invest in photo editing software that specifically has tools that stack images so that a can merge them into one photo (Image J just isn't good enough anymore)
Please can you advise which products have these functions.
    Auto-blending might be nice too.
    Thanks.

Download the trial of either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and put your images into layers.  Try different blend modes.

I currently have an imac 27", i7.  I have iphoto on this computer. What is the best photo editing software to purchase or download?
On my previouw mac I had Photo Shop Elenemts and Photoshop CS3. Both of the later had features that I liked.
I am an amatuer family photographer; What is the best photo editing software. I do not think I need the power and confusion of full version photoshop.

I take it you are looking for replacements for the apps you used on a previous Mac?
I do not have Photoshop Elements, so I do not know about compatibility. But this site will tell you:
    http://roaringapps.com
Photoshop CS3 does run in OS 10.9.1. (I use it just about everyday.) You do not have to give it up.
And there is Gimp, which is free and powerful.

With SO MUCH photo editing software available, what would be the best for me if I am a digital camera newby? I do not need Photoshop CC! I do not want to spend $700 bucks! My camera is a Nikon D90. Please help.

Where did you come up with the $700 figure?
Photography plan - $9.99/month or $119/year - Creative Cloud Photography plan : Adobe Creative Cloud
    Single App - $19.99/month
Complete plan - $49.99/month or $599/yr - Creative Cloud free trial & plans : Adobe Creative Cloud
Ah - If you wish to cancel early yeah $74.99 which would total for the year at $899.88. But that final total would be if you canceled in the 12th month but if you plan on keeping it that long might as well go for the annual contract. Then cancel at the end of the term limit if you need to.
If you are not sure what to get, Either Elements as was suggested by Peru Bob or the photography plan.

  • Free photo editing software for Macs & PCs?

    Hi folks!
I am looking for a free photo editing software to use for an upcoming class. I have a MacBook at home, but I will be teaching in a classroom equipped with PCs. I was hoping to find a free software that students could practice on in class and then download free for use at home afterward.
Have been trying to download Gimp 2.8.2, but I can't get it to install on my Mac OS 10.6.8 - It downloads but will not start.
Please let me know any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance!

i guess i want something where you can directly play with the images...cut out a section of the picture.....replace it with something else (like add icon/pictures over top of it)
also, the ability to paint colors over the picture and alter them in other ways, not just image quality or resizing it...
if there are no free programs for this, what are some cheap ones?
i looked at the programs that have been posted alreaedy, and i don't think that they are really what im looking for...
    thank you!
