Good plugin to spice up older mastered cds

Hi Guys,
I have a few older cds that were mastered very low and dont have much punch. I was wondering what would be a good plug in to use to punch up the tracks. I'm not looking to add more EQ but a little bit of exciter would be nice to brighten them up a bit.I was thinking maybe Magneto or psp vintage warmer, maybe waves L2 or 3? Also, I heard of a way you could take a track and brighten it up and then overlap it on the existing track along with a little compression I think.(I guess they did this on Motown recordings a lot) Does anyone know how they did this and could you tell me how to do it. I just wanna spice up these tracks a bit.
Thanks
George

You could accomplish most (if not all) of this in one hit with iZotope's Ozone mastering system. It runs fine within Audition.
Alternatively, if you don't mind a bit of effort, you could almost certainly do all of what you need within Audition alone - just check out the 'mastering' plugin, which is a limited version of Ozone anyway.
As for the old trick of overlaying a slightly compressed version of a track over the original, that's easy - just lay the file twice, in two tracks, in MV, and compress just one of them. Mix the output to taste using the channel faders, whilst adding the 'mastering' effect in the master track effects section.

  • Won't play older (thicker) cds

This may well be a hardware issue. I have tried playing some cds, and while they start playing, they slow down and eventually stop. Tried to copy them, but same thing.
Is there a good solution for copying...like finding a sloppy old player?

Sounds like your optical drive is fried. I am actually having the same problem with my 07 Macbook, although my apple care has expired on me. If you haven't taken it to the Genius's at the Apple store I would recommend doing so ASAP, and have them check the optical Drive. Good Luck!

  • What are some good Plugin packages for Logic - must be Leopard Compatible

I'm new to Logic, heck, Mac in general. On my PeeCee I used Nuendo v.1 and had the Waves Diamond Bundle. I'm looking for something with comparable abilities that's Leopard compatible. Also, I really can't afford the Waves stuff at this point, price is a HUGE consideration for me.
I'm seriously considering going to Logic Studio (use Express right now) to gain the multitude of instruments and Plugins. In your experience, are the plugins included in Logic Studio good enough that I'd get what I need using them and not have to find another package (for the time being at least)?
Thanks in advance for your help!

There aren't any classes in the API to do that, but there are 3rd party libraries that can do that. Just google.

  • Mac Mini struggling to copy/rip some older audio CDs

    Hello,
I have a 2012 Mac Mini, 2.6Ghz Quad-Core i7, 1TB Fusion Drive and 16GB of Crucial memory. Some months back I made a decision to re-rip my CD library as Apple Lossless, for streaming to the Apple TV connected to my receiver. I started with my newest CDs and worked backwards, but when I got down to the oldest of my CDs there were some (but not all) that the Mini struggled to rip cleanly or at all. With those troublesome discs, the results varied. Some discs would simply flat-out fail to rip or even copy to the desktop directly from the disc. Others would struggle to rip or copy but appear to succeed, only for the tracks to be riddled with millisecond audio drop-outs (this is actually more of a hassle, as it requires manually proofing every track for flaws). What's really bizarre is that even a directly copied file from disc to desktop would suffer the same audio drop-outs, even though it's a digital file going through no conversion and should be identical in every way.
So the logical conclusion would be that these discs have just gone bad due to age; but there-in lies the catch. Not only do the discs play without issue in other CD players, but I was able to successfully copy the same CDs on three other Macs (even using the same external optical drive in one case) successfully. The disc I ripped yesterday on my Mac Mini whose tracks were full of audio drop-outs now sounds flawless when ripped on my Mac Pro at work.
Obviously I have a workaround for getting these discs loaded - rip them on another computer - but now my bigger concern is what on earth if wrong with my Mac Mini? Is it a hardware issue? Something with the USB ports? Or the Fusion drive? The Operating System? Does anyone have any suggestions to try prior to me making a second backup of all my data and dragging it to the Genius Bar? Thanks.

    I have both:
    - an internal slot-loading drive in my mini, like you, and
    - an external USB-connected 5.25" mains-powered tray-loading drive.  A "proper" drive!
I too have problems sometimes reading/writing with the internal.  I've always assumed they have to make LOTS of compromises and shortcuts with the design and specification of the slim, low-powered internal drives, which are really intended for laptop/battery use- and always failing, as reading threads here will show.
I suggest you beg/borrow/buy a "real" external like mine for your old-CD rips. They're not expensive, and you can always sell it on when you've ripped your CD collection.

Alternatively, these days, you might have to buy an enclosure and drive separately and combine them, or get a used one off eBay.

  • Finding good plugin settings

After purchasing Logic Pro, I was surprised the setting choices that came with plugins (EQ, Space Designer, etc...) were not very realistic. A Piano in a Space Designer "Piano Concert Hall" sounds more like it's in outer space. The EQ setting for piano also sounds muffled and unrealistic. I've been able to play around with the settings to make them more realistic, but I was wondering if there is a forum somewhere where people post their plugin settings. It would be nice to share in all the hard work it takes to fine-tune these settings.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I did take the time to visit the spamgourmet site and have to say it really sounds like a great idea!
But anyway yes, we welcome all of your Logic presets: plug-ins, channel strips, Environments or song templates... and we already have about 40 of those files posted by members. I'd actually like to hear your enhanced piano sound preset.

  • Good/Bad idea: restore slightly older version of iTunes with Time Machine?

    Hi folks,
For years, my old but reliable Rio Cali mp3 player worked fine with iTunes and my Mac. All of a sudden, not only does iTunes not connect with the Rio, but it freezes/crashes the MacBook when I try! I've troubleshooted this several ways, including using different mini-USB sync cables (in case of short circuit) and even buying a much newer Rio Cali player, but same result. Then I searched the web, found that other Mac/iTunes 8.0.2 users have found the same problem ever since late November '08. Even though iTunes officialy says it's compatible with Rio Cali, it clearly is not.
So I'd like to go back to using 8.0.1 of iTunes (or perhaps 8.0). Can I use Time Machine to do this safely? All I want is the earlier version of iTunes, not the earlier version of all my iTunes music and App store app holdings! I know I can use Time Machine to restore for instance an MS Word document or my entire computer, but can I use it to restore just a single application, namely iTunes 8.0.1? What do I risk by trying? (I'd prefer not to screw up lots of other things).
    Many thanks!
    -- Josh
[PS Yes, I realize that it would be easier just to drop the old mp3 player. But it's nearly a one of a kind sports/athlete-oriented player -- rubberized and water-resistance-sealed for runners like me, useful logical hard buttons, and FM reception. iPod and nearly all other players fall short in each of these features which are important to me. Thanks for understanding.]

Ha! The manufacturer's support site? Rio went out of business a few years ago! Their websites still exist, but their last support posts about Mac iTunes compatibility are from 2004 and 2006. At that time, there was native compatibility, and there was also an iTunes plug-in which one could download and install in order to make the player and iTunes talk to each other (although I never needed it). That was back in the days of OS 10.2 and perhaps 10.3. That plug-in installer these days does nothing, it won't even finish running if one tries running it now. I know, since I've tried, and since I've thoroughly researched the other people and posts from Rio owners whose iTunes suddenly stopped working recently. I made a bug report to Apple, but who knows if re-establishing the compatibility is any kind of priority to them (doubt it). So I'm trying to handle this by using a slightly older iTunes version because I doubt there is any other fix.

  • Please help, I am trying to do a good deed and unlock an older Ipod Touch.

I know this might seem silly to some of you, but I desperately need some assistance. Every article I have looked up says I need to restore this old Ipod Touch and that will erase the memory, allowing me to get in.
I Don't want to do that!! HERES WHY:
My girlfriends mother was killed several years ago, and THIS is HER Ipod Touch we just found.
I am doing my best to try to get any old photos she might have had on here of her and her mother (she has so few of them that even the possibility of this being on there is precious to us) but it is password protected and if I "restore" it... it will defeat the entire purpose and erase any photos still there!!p please
If ANYONE knows how to help we would both be deeply appreciative!!!
    Sincerely,
    -C

Sorry, I'll try being rude to you this time maybe that will help you understand.
The ONLY way, genius, to clear the passcode without restoring it is to use means that are not supported by Apple and we are NOT ALLOWED to discuss here which is why I was being so vague.
So I will go ahead and break the rules for your benefit despite your name calling and rudeness:
Google the phrase "ipod touch passcode unlock without restore" (ignore the quotation marks) and you will get the information, including YouTube videos, that you need to accomplish your mission.
This thread will probably be deleted so save the email you get.

  • Professional quality mastering plugin?

I need good mastering on a Logic G5 and soon macbook pro system. The Waves L3 stuff looks nice but I think they work better on Pro Tools systems.
Are there any good options for non Pro Tools systems?

    hi noel, yep, would agree.
mastering, to me, is an extension of a mix. an enhancement.
i like to think they are part of the same thing.
a good ME will listen hard to your mix and attemp to enhance same.
but he/she would have a problem with a "bad" mix and should tell the client so.
this is not always the case. money comes into it.
i attempt to get the mix as good as pos., so very little mastering is required.
originally, when i started in audio at age 15, mastering was a way of matching tracks on an LP that weren't produced by the same artist, recording studio, monitoring system. one song would have more tops, another more bass, etc, and mastering was used to try to even out the spectral balance and percieved loudness between tracks.
today, things are much better technically, but, unfortunately there are a lot of people getting into audio/cd production that really need to gain experience by hard work in the real world. it's been made easy, and been made easy to screw up or overdo things as well.

  • I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes does this occur with the new extreme?

I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes. Does this occur with the newer version?

    1)  If the reception comes and goes as a result of wireless interference from other sources in your home and around the home...other wireless networks in the neighborhood....or...nearby cordless phones.....then a new router is likely to experience the same issues. See this Apple support document for symptoms and fixes of wireless interference.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
    2) If the reception comes and goes as a result of an aging power supply in the older AirPort Exteme or another component that is intermittently acting up, then a new router should take care of that.
What we cannot tell you is whether 1) or 2) applies to your situation.  If possible, it would be good idea to take the older AirPort to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

  • Final Cut Studio Plugins

Does anybody know where I can buy good plugins for Final Cut Pro? I'm looking more for the dramatic type of plugins...such as flickering in and out of the edges of the video, things like that. The closest movie that I can think of that has a lot of that would be Man On Fire.

GOOGLE - Type: Final Cut Pro Plug Ins. Pages and pages from which to choose, some free, most not.
Natress has a great set, but FX Factory from Noise Industries might be more what you're looking for
although I think it requires FCP 6.

  • [SOLVED] Possibly missing mpegts* in gst-plugins-bad?

I'm currently working on a DVB streaming project and it seems like there is a problem with the gst-plugins-bad package. This package is supposed to provide mpegts-plugins e.g. "mpegtsdemux", "mpegtsparse" and so on. However no application on my system can find "mpegtsdemux" or "mpegtsparse". I have installed "gstreamer1.2.4-1" and also "gstreamer0.10.23-8". Of course I have installed "gst-plugins-bad" for both versions of gestreamer and even all of the other plugin packages. I have also read that it is absolutely ok to to run both versions of gstreamer on the same system.
    First Example:
I tried to install Gnome DVB Daemon. Both, the version from AUR and from  here fail with the error
checking GStreamer 0.10 inspection tool... yes
checking GStreamer 0.10 mpegtsparse plugin... no
    configure: error:
Cannot find required GStreamer-0.10 plugin 'mpegtsparse'.
It should be part of gst-plugins-bad. Please install it.
But I have already installed gst-plugins-bad for gstreamer-0.10
    Second Example:
    gst-launch dvbsrc modulation="QAM 64" trans-mode=8k bandwidth=8 frequency=514000000 code-rate-lp=AUTO code-rate-hp=2/3 guard=4 hierarchy=0 pids=100:256:257 ! mpegtsdemux name=demux ! queue max-size-buffers=0 max-size-time=0 ! mpeg2dec ! xvimagesink demux. ! queue max-size-buffers=0 max-size-time=0 ! mad ! alsasink
    results in:

Thank you. I didn't know that you can use gst-inspect without any parameters. The output (mine is the same as yours) explains why there is no mpegtsdemux.
Actually I was mislead by the example from the comments of dvbsrc here. Ok, probably not the best source ;-)
Regarding the "First example" from my post:
Gnome DVB Daemon uses/searches for the mpegtsparse, so I assume that the plugin names really did change.
Gnome DVB Daemon should be using/searching for tsparse instead of mpegtsparse. I will write the developers a bug report later. Problem Solved.

  • How do I access older icloud dates?

how do i restore to a much older icloud date? I've tried to access an older date but i only have 3 options available.

According to Apple's documents they keep 3 last backups in icloud, but you can try to use computer backup. The good thing - those are way older usually- downside you need to find one.

  • Flickr plugin does not "replace" when uploading after elimination of Flickr Pro accounts

When uploading an image to flickr it has been possible for Pro accounts to re-upload a photo and replace an existing upload. This "replace" functionality keeps intact any comments, ratings, "favorites" etc that the photo has accumulated on the Flickr website since the original image was uploaded. The Lightroom Flickr plugin (authored by Adobe) has always correctly limited this "replace" functionality to Pro accounts (flickr did not allow the API call for non-pro accounts).
With the recent flickr policy change eliminating Pro accounts, flickr has enabled the replacement functionality for all users. However, the Lightroom flickr plugin still performs a check for a Pro account and does not attempt to replace a previously uploaded image if a user has a non-pro account (which is now all accounts that were not grandfathered in as Pro). The plugin currently uses the older behavior of first deleting the image and then uploading a new image, thus losing all comments, history, views, bookmarks etc that the old image has accumulated.
There is another non-adobe flickr plugin, and the author of that plugin stated on his web site that simply using the old Pro "replace" API call now works for normal flickr accounts.
I recognize that this flickr policy change happened recently, but I'd like to be sure that Adobe is aware of this change so that the next point release of Lightroom will include a change to the built-in flicker plugin to remove the check for Pro accounts and allow all users to replace photos. I used this feature a lot when I was a pro subscriber, and I think all flickr users of Lightroom would appreciate this change. It is still possible for all users to replace an image on Flickr by exporting to a jpg from Lightroom and then uploading the replacement through the web site, but enabling the plugin would obviously be better for customers.

I worked with Gokul from Adobe support, and we eventually stumbled into the solution.
    The system clock was wrong!
Based on something Friedl says on the blog for his Flickr plugin, the Flickr authentication APIs will fail if the system clock is wrong.  His plugin helpfully points out that the clock is wrong when you install it.  It also reports the error that he gets from the Flickr APIs: HTTP 401 (not authorized).  Unfortunately, Lightroom's builtin Flickr publishing plugin doesn't report any error, and it just fails silently.
In my case, Windows appeared to be displaying the correct time, but the time zone was incorrect, and my system time was actually 3 hours ahead.  I reset the clock and timezone and restarted Lightroom.  Now, the builtin Flickr publish plugin is working again.

  • IM Status plugins for iTunes

Does Anybody know a good plugin where you can show what song is playing in iTunes to Yahoo! Messenger for windows?
