Good raw workflow in Elements 12

What's a good workflow for raw files in Elements 12?  I shoot with a smaller sensor--Lumix FZ150, and wonder if I can get better results than with the camera's built in JPEG engine.

If you're forced to use only PSE for editing RAW files, then dj_paige's answer is the workflow to use.
However, the PSE Editor is a very poor choice for editing because it has almost zero support for the 16 bit per pixel images generated by RAW processing software.

I'm also using a camera with a small sensor -- the Panasonic LF1, so even though it's sensor is larger than the one in the FZ150, the concerns are the same:
"Better results" depends on the end use of your images.  If they're only going to be posted in a Web blog or used in a picture frame or printed as wallet sized pictures, then the PSE workflow (or the camera's JPG image) will be just fine.
If you want to get the ultimate quality out of your RAW images and are willing to spend the time working on them, then the workflow will be like this:
Use the free RawTherapee application to process the RAW file to pull the absolute best quality out of the image.  RawTherapee has a million options and adjustments, so the learning curve is quite steep, but there's no better software for getting the best out of the image.  You'll save the result as a 16 bit per pixel image (in PNG or TIF format) if you need to further edit the image.
Use an image editing application that fully supports 16 bit per pixel images, like PhotoLine or PaintShopPro, to make any final adjustments.
That's the workflow I use and the results are spectacular considering the small size of the camera's sensor -- I have no qualms about producing A4-sized prints or PNG images from the LF1.
The bottom line is that you have some choices to make.  My experience is that it was only when I mastered this workflow that the resulting images justified shooting in RAW with such a small sensor.

  • Cost of Goods Sold by Cost Elements Accounting

    EBS Version: 12.1.3
    Is it possible to define the COGS (OM: Generate Cost of Goods Sold) to capture Cost of Goods Sold by Cost Elements ?
    The way the cost is built through the WIP process is through Cost Elements:
    * direct material,
    * direct labor,
    * manufacturing overhead
    * material overhead
    * etc...
    All these elements are captured separately in WIP and in separate accounts.
    Is it possible to keep in separate COGS accounts (COGS -Direct Material, COGS Direct Labor, etc.) and not just be lumped into one Total COGS account at the time of sales order issue.
    Is It possible with SLA Customization (derivation rules, etc.)? or modifying workflow?? I need detailed solution please!!!
    I need the information in SLA, i don't care if not possible in material distributions.

  • RAW Conversion in Elements

    I have a D70 and shot a bunch of pictures in RAW. I am trying to learn using this format and what I can do with it in Elements. Is there an easy way to convert these in a batch to TIFF?

    Bob.....
    You need to consider the variations in your images before thinking about 'batch conversion' should it exist.
    With any Raw processor, batch processing would rely on the fact that all your images would need the same adjustment. This may be true if you've shot several images of a similar same scene but if not each may need a different 'tweak' anyway.
    Elements is not ideal for processing many Raw images. I used it for a long while doing just this but there are other programs that are more suited to a Raw workflow. Right now I'm trialing Adobes Lightroom which is free as a Beta version. I'm impressed and will probably buy the released version early next year.
    Lightroom and similar programs (Bibble, Capture One) have the ability to Synchronise the adjustments from one image to many others. Plus many other features. You can do the same in the full version of Photoshop but not as well as Lightroom.
    If you intend to stick with Raw take a look at Lightroom

    NEF's for the D7100 should work with the latest version PSE13

  • Can't open Canon Rebel T5i raw file in elements 10

    I am trying to open a raw file (CR2) in my Elements 10 program, but I keep getting error messages that it's the "wrong type of file".
    I've looked around & downloaded the plug-in that was supposed to fix that, but it still isn't working.
    What am I missing??
    PS - I am also using Windows 7, the camera raw plug in version is 6.7.0.339, and my camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T5i
    *edited to add*
    so I just followed this link:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5316&fileID=4946
    because it looked like my camera raw plug in needed updating, but I got an installation error code: U44M2P7

    my camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T5i
    The Rebel T5i was first supported by Camera Raw 7.4 which is only compatible with Elements 11 and later

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
    Unfortunately Elements 10 is only compatible with Camera Raw up to version 6.7. It's not compatible with Camera Raw 7.4 so it'll never be able to open T5i Raw files.
    If you want to open T5i Raw files in Elements, you'll have to upgrade to Elements 12.
    Alternatively, if you want to stick with Elements 10, you can download the free DNG converter from Adobe, convert all T5i Raw files to DNGs. Then open the DNGs in Elements 10.

  • Opening Nikon D7000 raw files in Elements 8

    I am unable to open Nikon D7000 NEF files in Elements 8. I have been unsuccessfull in downloading the version 5.7 update from the web site. After downloading several times the files are still not recognized in Elements 8.

    I am using Windows 7. I tried selecting the folder that contained the folder holding the pictures to be converted. I then single-clicked the folder holding the pictures and hit select. A message came up stating that the source folder did not contain any supported camera raw files.I have spoken with my Elements software supplier and this is his response:
    "I've done some digging and it turns out the Nikon D7000 wasn't supported in elements until the release of version 6.4 Adobe Camera Reader.So to make sure you have the latest ACR update installed. You can check which one you have by going into elements and clicking Help>About Plug-In>Camera Raw. And if it's not 6.7 then Help>Updates will find it and let you install the latest version. You could also try saving your camera files as .RAW instead of .NEF, and then opening them in elements. Adobe lightroom 4 should already have these plugins available right outside the box, but if you can save the money and run updates instead that would work just fine." I have checked for Elements updates for the Camera Raw plug-in and the message appears stating no updates are available. The camer raw plug-in version is currently 6.1.0.250.

    What operating system are you using?
    The most common cause is pointing the dng converter to the actual files and not just to the folder that the camera raw files are in.
    There is an example of how on a windows system in this thread:

  • Opening raw files in elements 10

    I can't open raw files in elements 10 from my new compact canon G15 camera on my Mac OS X version 10.8.3. the message says it's unable to open this file type. Raw files do open ok from my  50D. Can anybody please help me? I purchased this version of elements 10 from apple online so have no disk to reload from.

    Every camera model has its own raw format and the camera raw plugin has to be updated to work with new cameras as they appear. PSE 10 can't use any version of camera raw 7, the current version--it's too different to be compatible with it, so you would need to update PSE to be able to use 7.3. It doesn't have anything to do with mac or windows in this case. It's the same situation for either.
    However, if you are considering updating you should know that there is a problem with the App Store version of PSE 11. It comes with 7.2 for some obscure reason, and the app store rules don't allow updating anywhere but from via the app store itself, which means adobe would have to submit an updated version of PSE every time there's an ACR update, something that so far they have not done, so if you do decide to update, don't buy from the App Store.

  • Workflow issue - Main workflow container elements are not updated.

    Hi All
    We have implemented N-step badi for approval process and for this we have activated one workflow which contains subworkflow .
    During approval process , only the subworkflow container elements( approver list and last approver) getting updated with status and time.But main workflow container elements is not updating with these details.
    Binding between main workflow and subworkflow is perfect. But reverse binding ( from subworkflow -> main workflow ) will take place once subworkflow is completely finished. But here we will require / need to pass some information from sub workkflow to main workflow when still subworlflow in process( before completed itself).
    Please let me know is there any process / steps is required to pass values between subworkflow to main workflow ( binding is perfect).
    Please let me the way how I can update the main workflow container from  subworkflow container or from any step in sub workflow .
    In subworkflow . we have loop of  approvers and it will send workitems to approvers one by one.
    Here i need to update Main workflow with the information like last approver and approver list with status and approved time.
    So please suggest how Can I update main workflow container from subworkflow while subworkflow is still in process( subworkflow not yet completed).
    Kindly reply me ASAP.
    Thanks and Regards
    Madhukar .

    Yes I am setting SWC_SET_ELEMENT for my container values,the ones for which i have defined as EXPORT.
    And I have checked the task also...
    Everything has been checked properly..The binding is fine.

  • Camera RAW 7 and Elements 9

    I'm using the Beta version of CS6 and there is a CAMERA RAW 7 program that I would like to use in my Elements program. The RAW editor in Elements (current) always has the sliders in a pre-set configuration, not at zero. Using CS6 Beta, the Camera RAW (7) editor opens up with the sliders set at zero, a much better way to edit. Since I'm a bit overwhelmed by CS6, I've resorted to RAW editing with the Beta, closing it while saving the .DNG data, then opening up Elements and continuing from there. I'd love to have the RAW 7, but if someone can help with my issues with my version, that's cool too ! I've tried to vary the settings, nothing seems to do the trick. Thanks **

    ACR 7.0 is currently only availably in Lightroom 4 and CS6 Beta. It’s a brand new raw engine which produces amazing results in the highlights and shadows areas of images. The old brightness, fill-light and recovery sliders have disappeared. Whilst ACR 7.0 should ultimately to be available for PSE10 it’s unlikely an update for PSE9 will be available.

  • Will there be a RAW plugin for Elements 12 supporting the Canon EOS 7D MkII - or when will the DNG converter for this be available?

    I've just bought a Canon EOS 7D MkII but cannot open the RAW files in Elements 12. I also can't use the latest DNG Converter to convert them - will either option become available and if yes how long is it likely to take please?
    Thanks, Sarah

    Hi,
    The Canon 7D Mk II is currently not supported by any version of camera raw.
    It is expected that Camera raw 8.7 will include support and we are hoping that it will be released soon.
    PSE 12 has ceased to be updated - you will either need to update to PSE 13 or use the DNG 8.7 converter (when it becomes available) to convert the CR2 files to DNG files - PSE 12 will then beable to use the DNG files.
