Good recording volume

Alright, so here are some dilemmas I'm facing.
1. When I put the recording volume up too high, it creates distortion in my song.
2. When I put the recording volume too low, it makes it where I have to turn the playback volume up too high to have to hear the song well.
3. When I turn my volume up, I tend to get a background buzz on all tracks. This is really annoying, and it does it on every real track, so the more tracks I make, the more buzzing.
Is there a quick fix to this? I'd like to solve this problem so I feel like I'm making stuff people actually want to hear. It's important to me not to get my sound too bassy and distorted, but also to have it at a regular playback volume. And no buzz!
Please help.

I have the newest Mac. Twenty-inch. Home. Using a Samson C01U USB Studio Condenser Microphone. Is that the kind of info you need?

  • Mic recording volume too high

    Even with the lowest input volume setting in System Preferences / Sound, the mic recording volume is too high and I'm getting clipping. I'm using an MXL Desktop Recording Kit from Marshall Electronics, with a Griffin iMic USB interface, and recording in GarageBand 3 on a Mac Mini.
    I'm a folk singer playing a nylon-string classical guitar, so I'm not even especially loud! The MXL mic captures great sound quality, but it is so sensitive that even when I'm six feet away, my acoustic guitar and vocals frequently max out the sound levels and get clipped. The room where I record doesn't allow me to get much farther away, so I need a different solution.
    I've tried using compression while recording, but this doesn't appear to limit the peaks or prevent clipping. Do I need to buy a hardware mixer or some other interface to allow me to further reduce the mic input level, or is there another software contol in GarageBand or someplace else (other than System Preferences / Sound) that I'm missing?
    I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, David
    Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   GarageBand 3

    Thanks for these suggestions. I suspected GB effects wouldn't change the recording levels, but appreciate the confirmation. I checked the Audio/Midi setup in GB preferences, and I don't see anywhere to adjust the recording level there, just a selection for the audio input (source).
    I have been using the iBooster, so I tried plugging the mic directly into the iMic and boosting the input level in System Preferences/Sound. This achieved a much lower input level; so low that the GB tuner couldn't even recognize the pitch of a single string when plucked. So this seems to create the opposite problem (recording volume too low). Good idea to try, though.
    I will experiment with the room acoustics and try a larger space, but it still seems the recording level is just too high, period. Any other suggestions?
    I saw a reference to a simple mixer in another GB thread (Behringer UB502 Eurorack). Could something like this be a possible solution?
    Thanks, David

  • Input (Recording) volume vs. Monitor volume

    I have scoured the boards and can't find an answer to my problem -- many apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. I'm sure it must have been.
    I am trying to record an electric guitar as a Real Instrument track, while monitoring the signal with all the internal effects, etc., as I play.
    The instrument is going in through an M-Audio FireWire Solo recording interface.
    My problem is: how do I adjust the volume of the instrument that I am hearing back for monitoring purposes without altering the input/record volume of the track?
    At present, I have the slider in the Track Mixer section set to how loud I would like the track to record, but I cannot hear the backing track clearly in order to play along, as the electric guitar is so loud.
    Turning the Track Mixer slider down seems to decrease recording volume and result in a weak signal, while the "Track Info" volume slider doesn't seem to affect anything at all (even though it is not greyed out).
    How do I monitor my performance within the context of a usable working mix while still recording the signal at a good level? There must be a way!
    Many thanks in advance!

    what do I use for setting record levels?
    the interface (the FW SOlo)
    the Track Info volume doesn't seem to do anything

  • WaveStudio recording volume control

    I'm using WaveStudio 7 in concert with my Soundblaster to digitize lp's. I'm also using a Graham Slee preamp with good results. I might be missing this feature somewhere, but I can't seem to find an adjustable recording volume feature. I've even tried to reduce volume input-via the sound card through the Windows device settings. This feature is greyed out.
    The older version of WaveStudio had an adjustable input level feature. Does version 7 have one somewhere?
    Much thanks!
    Zound Guy

    Think I have solved it. Go into control panel->sound. Under the recording tab select the appropriate input, Line-In in my case, set as default then adjust properties. Under the levels tab you can increase the volume of the input.

  • About Guitar Recording (volume problems)

    Hello all people
    Im an old fan of creative like most of us
    Right now i still use my Soundblaster Live 1024! Platinum
    I got the platinum version to connect my guitar through the amplifier on it and start recording
    While i had almost everything solved im left with 1 and only left problem
    Even if i get a very good recording quality , is always seems like the volume output from straight from my guitar or through the amplifier (just a little bit moved towards to 1) is toooooo much for it.
    I reach the best volume in my recordings but the problem is everything must be put to veeery low all levels included sound cards hardware and through windows software volume
    How do u think i should try fix this problem ?

    My friend, i understand your problem very well. There are 2 reasons in practical.
    1)Your guitar use a electromagnet to transform the string oscillation in electrical signal -as usually- and the high impedance of it not matched with the sound card's line input impedance. You -probably- must have and a little of distortion which you can't hear.
    2)The output of your amplifier has to much level -the line output not the speaker output-
    able to drive in clipping the line input of sound card. Thus and the very low settings
    in your P.C. software mixer.
    To solve this, you can use a mini mixing desk between your guitar or amplifier and the
    line input of sound card, but the quality of these budget desks is very low as include
    many unnecessary controls which included in the software of your sound card.
    A second approach, presented in my site at URL http://www.eal.gr and is a single channel
    preamplifier -self made- with high quality. Get a D.I. box from the market, and inject the
    signal from your guitar or your amplifier to this and connect the balanced output of
    D.I. to the input of the preamplifier, adjust the input gain, the output level and finally
    route the signal in every channel of your choice by the use of the preamplifier as an
    interface to the line input of your sound card.

  • Free Goods Record Maintenance Problem..

    Hi Experts,
    I found a strange problem while I was creating free goods record in VBN1. I found though I was creating an exclusive free goods record but in the back end a record is creating automatically in Inclusive as well with the same material. After creating the Exclusive free goods record if you save it end then enter with the change mode then you can see a record automatically created in inclusive as well though it has no impact in sales order.
    Please explain me the reason.
    Regards,
    Jeetsap

    Hi,
    Free goods is not currently supported in combination with material structures (e.g. product selection, bills of material, variants with BOM explosion).
    Free goods is currently only supported for sales orders with document category C (not for quotations, for example).
    Free goods is not currently supported for deliveries without reference to a sales order.
    Free goods is not currently supported for make-to-order production, third-party order processing and scheduling agreements.
    Free goods is currently only supported on a 1:1 basis

  • Recording 'Volume' with the midi notes??

    Has anyone figured out how to get GB-09' to record:
    -midi volume at the same time your playing the actual midi notes in? ( all at once )
    +maybe expression pedal or volume pedal? or re-mapping sysex, or....
    GB 9' version 5.1 (398)

    GB doesn't record volume changes in Real Time, it does, however record velocity (which may appear as volume changes, depending on the instrument)

  • Creative Media Source record volume level slider doesn't w

    I had an older version of Creative Media Source and a installed the latest version off the website to try to fix the problem, but the same thing occurs in the current version. I want to record, but the slider is grayed out and when I try to use it, the whole media source window moves, not the slider. It's stuck on zero. My sound card drivers are installed and working correctly. I can play music and adjust the playback volume. The record volume used to work. I don't know why it stopped.
    Any thoughts on how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Russ

  • Recordable Volume Change Control Number?

    Does any one know the midi control number that Garageband 09 uses to record volume changes on a software instrument track?
    I'm not talking about the standard Midi control number 7 for volume - this only controls the left-right fader in the track header and Garageband does not record volume changes to this fader.
    There's a value from 1 to 127 that will record volume changes as a part of the track itself. Does anyone know what that number is? Or does anyone have the table for all the control numbers that Garageband uses, or can anyone provide a link to such a table of such control numbers?
    Thanks.

  • Recording Volume

    Hello,
    I have looked for this topic without success. If I missed it forgive me.
    Forever I have been able to control the recording volume via the info track selection.
    Then just like that it is gray'd out and not allowing me to adjust it.
    My wifes G5 runing GB2 had the same problem but fixed itself when she plugged in the Snowball mic by Blue®
    I have the same mics and like I sid there were no problems. I have tried everything I know of, from rebooting to reinstalling.
    So now when I try to record audio, be it a guitar or vocal I am peeking out all over the place. Even if I go into the main system preferences and bring the output volume for the input way down, the recording is still sounding distorted.
    I am using a basic track with no effect either.
    Sincerely,
    At A Loss

    Sorry for the long delay. Never was notified you rang.
    Anyway yes it is a USB mic. Problem was:
    One the firmware on this new mic was not a Rev1 mic (meaning the Rev1 Snowballs volume input was controllable via the music software .
    The new mic's have changed things up a bit by making the user use the systems volume input via the system pref's. (which was a dumb move but oh well)
    They do have a better sound quality. Also i think it is note worthy to mention folks who are having problem powering their USB mic throug a HUB. The HUB needs to be powered. I use the HUB Belkin® made for the MacMini® and it works fine.
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • Why is it auto-adjusting the record volume when I don't want it to?

    I start playing and I want the levels to almost clip. It adjusts to a lower record volume. Why? I have the compression and noise gate off.

    That's odd. You're using the internal mic and you have the Automatic Level unchecked? If you turn the slider up high enough it should clip like crazy. I don't know why it would back the level down.
    Maybe try the "oddball" fixes:

  • Recording volume troubles w sop sax

    Having a problem with soprano sax recording in GB2. Very low volume on playback.
    This hasn’t happened before, so am I forgetting something?
    1) Using a Shure SM57 going tinto a PreSonus FireBox w XLR cable and into the iMac via firewire;
    2) Both GB2 and computer system preferences set for FireBox;
    3) Have tried both Channels 1 & 2 on FireBox, with volume/input dials starting at 12 o’clock to max of +30. Also tested the “Main Level” dial going from 12 o’clock to the max;
    4) Checked all cables to ensure correct, tight fits and tried both firewire inputs on the computer. Also tried another, identical, Shure mic to eliminate that as a problem;
    5) Tried upping the sax track volume ruler from 0.0 to the max. Same for the master track volume ruler;
    6) While recording, volume seems correct, more than adequate. Also, on playback monitored through FireBox headphones volume seems correct;
    7) While recording, and on playback...even though it sounds plenty loud... volume level activity is on the very low end. Just relatively low “green” VU activity;
    8) However, when playing back through computer speakers and headphones...after changing preferences from FireBox to computer built-in audio and internal mic.....volume is very low. Sounds like I’m half-way down the block.
    I’m hoping that I forgot something. Been a couple of weeks since I’ve recorded a horn.

  • Low Recording Volume w/ Fender Mustang III USB connection

    Using the USB connection from Fender Mustang III amp.
    Garageband recognizes the connection but grays out the "Recording Level"
    The end result even turning all volume to max is low input recording volume.
    What is the problem? Is there a setting I am missing or is this a bug?

    although i kind of doubt it, see if you can set the volume of the USB interface's input through the Audio MIDI Setup utility

  • 5310 - Adjustable Recording Volume

    Hello everyone, I recently bought a Nokia 5310 and I really like it so far. But there is this one thing that bothers me, and being a musician, I really need to be able to adjust the recording volume. It says everywhere on the net, and even in the manual that you can adjust the input volume for recording, but the amazing thing is that it doesn't tell you how! I have been looking everywhere in the phone 's configs for it, I've let my friends look, I've read the manual and there is absolutely nothing. Please help me out Thanks in advance, and sorry in advance if there already have been people asking the same (I just signed up a few minutes ago and I have to go make dinner now).

    There has to be someone else with a 5310 who has figured this out!
