Good resources for learning how to use Aperture's adjustments
I'm a long-time visual artist who is just now getting into photography. I own both Lightroom and Aperture, and I must say that, for me, Aperture's interface and philosophy are my favorites. I love the way it handles photo organization. I have one problem, however. Being a relative photographic newbie, I have a terrible time with the adjustments. I seem to have a much easier time making good-looking adjustments in Lightroom. In Aperture, I just aimlessly noodle around, make a mess, and undo all my changes regularly.
I just found the Apple manual on making adjustments. I was wondering what other resources you more experienced photographers used to learn your way around.
Thanks,
Mark
Thanks I have that one on order from Amazon even as we speak. As an update, I've also found some information on bagelturf.com, and it looks as though Aperture Users Professional Network is going to start a 7-part series on Adjustments in Aperture. That sounds just like what the doctor ordered.
O'Reilly's "Inside Aperture" site also seems worthwhile. I'm sure you all know about these. I'm glad they're there. I've subscribed to a couple of podcasts as well.

for me excellent sources. It's no 'from zero' content, more focussing on one issue/aspect, but teaching 'drive by' many, many basics and specialities. as a non native English speaker, I do appreciate the perfect audio/speaking ... -
Of course going to school would be a good option, but I want to know if one-to-one is also a good way to learn how to use logic pro. Has anyone been through the one-to-one program for logic pro and can say that they learned how to use logic pro well because of it?
For sure, one to one training, if given by a tutor who is capable, will hand you the means to build up self-confidence and will therefore let you operate the hard/software in an intelligent manner, instead of going for the trial and error method which has its pro's and con's too. Once you've passed this beginners phase you will make your own decisions intelligently and then you will also start to get experience and learn even from your mistakes. Something like that in theory and the rest is up to you!

Good Resources for learning Bash Scripting
I know, I should probably be lectured for the fact that I'm a heavy Linux user who programs in a variety of languages, but is very limited when it comes to bash scripting itself.
So, I've decided now is the time to learn. It seriously beats writing configuration scripts in C, I think (that's not really what C is used for these days...).
So, anyone know of some good (preferably free) resources on learning Bash?
Edit:
OR if someone has any suggested alternatives (e.g., Python as a replacement?), do tell.

Good resources for understanding how the internet works
Hi everyone,
I got quite a lot of spare time at my hands these days, so I thought I might learn about how the internet (and networking in general, after all I'm using the internet daily, and I've even programmed with Java sockets for ages)! Specifically, I'm probably talking about the OSI model and its components.
Historically, reading Wikipedia entries doesn't quite cut it for me, I tend to get the hang of things a lot easier with a book. So, if you know a good book (though a good online guide / explanation is fine, too), please let me know!
Cheers,
- AllanAt my uni, we use "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach" by James Kurose and Keith Ross for all our networking classes. I wholeheartedly recommend it; it's clear, approachable, and something you'd want to read if you didn't have to read it.

What is best method for learning how to use mySQL with Coldfusion?
I have been using access databases for years with Coldfusion. I have a client that wants me to build an online classroom. I figure it's time to finally start using mySQL, but there is so much info out there, I don't know which way to turn.
Where do you experts recommend I get started?
Also, I am using coldfusion entrprise on my system at home. My machine is a 64-bit, 3.30Ghz AMD FX - 6100 six-core processor with 8gig of ram. Can I install mySQL on the machine and run CF8 without any problems? How much RAM left on your system? If the computer is strictly for development, then you have more than enough to run ColdFusion, MySQL, browsers, and other development tools.
For MySQL download the MySQL Community Server and MySQL Workbench. There is also all-in-one package for Windows, http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/windows/installer/ that you don't need to download the server and workbench separately. The installation should be straight forward.
By the way, other CF users may suggest you to use MariaDB (https://mariadb.org/), which is a branch of MySQL. -

ThanksHey Lee,
You find yourself in that position, I find myself in that
position, every
damn developer/programer in the world find themselves in that
position. It
may be on different levels, but everyones in the same boat.
Here is my suggestion. Take the existing knowledge you have,
pick a
technology that is a bit more futureproof (if the one you
have is getting
outdated) and one that isn't too far removed from the one you
know and put
it all into that one area.
Databases are really important if you want to be a decent web
developer. If
you're serious and want to be good then devote time to a
particular database
and get to know it well. I would suggest SQL Server. You
don't have to be
DBA standard but get as much knowledge on it as you can.
Never underestimate
your required knowledge of databases.
Set yourself goals. Say to yourself "In 6 months I want to be
a proficient
developer in this language" and go for it. Don't get
side-tracked into
something else just keep focused on one area and get good at
it. Yes, that
language will become outdated in time but you will be all the
more ready to
take on the next because of your past experiences.
I try to look at it like this; It is better to a master of
one technology
and know enough to get by in others than a Jack of all
technologies but a
master of none.
Pat.

I need to learn how to use Illustrator CS6
I have tried to access both the help topics and the video tutorials for Illustrator CS6. Help topics always have no listing for learning how to use the program. And the video tutorials will not run.
What does that mean "will not run?" Any error? Doesn't show? No sound?
Which system? Which browser? Which page exactly? -

Websites, books, and other resources for learning to use Premiere Pro
What websites, books, tutorials, and other resources have you found useful for learning to use Premiere Pro?
I want to make sure that we have a comprehensive list of good resources for Premiere Pro. See this page for a list of high-quality After Effects resources that I put together; I want something like this for Premiere Pro.
I'll start. In no particular order, here are some resources that I've found valuable:
this forum (of course)
Premiere Pro Help documents and Help & Support pages in several languages
Community Help search for Premiere Pro
Getting started with Premiere Pro by video2brain
Premiere Pro CS5: Learn By Video by video2brain
video tutorials on Adobe TV and Video Workshop
Premiere Pro CS5 Classroom in a Book
Premiere Pro team blog
Premiere Pro team Facebook page and Twitter feed
PPBM5 (Premiere Pro CS5 benchmark) for performance information
Best of Premiere Pro by Eran Stern> I see mention above of Lynda.com, but either missed Total Training, or perhaps they have merged?
I didn't mention Lynda.com.
And, no, Total Training and Lynda.com certainly haven't merged.
Total Training has some good Premiere Pro stuff, but it's not the first place that I'd point someone for Premiere Pro. -
Best place to go to learn how to use my iPad mini?
Where can you go online to learn how to use the iPad mini?

There are other good books available, but the User Guide is an excellent reference. -
Suggest a good book for learning?
Hey, all.
Trying to get into the automating/scripting thing as I've started a new job that has to do a lot of versions of similar animations/illustrations. I'm no programmer, but have had some success with simple AppleScripts in Illustrator and Photoshop, but After Effects doesn't like to play nice with AS. So I figure I may as well focus my efforts on ExtendScript/JavaScript to work with all the apps, be cross-platform, plus help with my limited Expressions knowledge.
So can anyone suggest some good books for learning the JavaScript language? I've done online tutorials, which have helped a little, but just a big ol' consolidated JavaScript book, teaching the structure and syntax from the beginning (again, not a programmer by trade) would be best for me. Thing is, 95% of the books I've looked at are focused on web design, which I'm not that interested in. I'll use one if the core JavaScript teachings are well-presented and I can just ignore the web stuff; just don't want to buy a book that I'm only going to read half of and not learn everything I need to.
All suggestions welcome, and thanks in advance.Hi there - lots of resources...
Look up "eloquent javascript" online for a pdf.
Javascript - The Definitive guide
NewThinkTank on youtube
Codeacademy
Then it's the scripting guide for the other half.
