Good routers w/MBP C2D

We need a list of wireless routers that work flawlessly with the Mac Book Pro C2 Duo. Please list in bold below and nothing else.
There is another topic here for BAD routers:

Ted,
I have never tried the WRT54G without encryption.
To be honest with you, I'm not sure what the firmware version is. I have never even checked it. I set it up right out of the box.
I hope you can understand that I'm a little reluctant to go fishing around my router's settings in fear of screwing it up. It's not that I don't want to help, I just don't want to "fix what isn't broken".
What I can tell you is that I did a lot of research before I bought the WRT54G. I started by researching my internet service provider. I have Earthlink DSL service. Looking into their home network wireless offerings I learned that they provide the WRT54G with their service. Further research on their website, I found detailed instructions for configuring the WRT54G. Follow this link to find the documents:
Link
I referenced articles: 170749, 3905, 25705, 25695 and 25257. To set the WPA2, I followed article 25695.
Hopefully you will find them helpful.
Good Luck,
John
p.s. This reply is proof. I'm sending it from my MBP via the WRT54G.

  • Bad routers w/MBP C2D

OK, the other thread related to this topic:
is getting kind of convoluted with too much stuff that does not belong in there.
So I am starting this new thread, as well as a thread of GOOD routers that work ok. When posting, only post your router that IS NOT working with the Mac Book Pro Core 2 Duo via wireless, and it's model number. NOTHING ELSE!
The thread for good routers is here:

I will start with the first reply...

Apple airport extreme base station 5.7 and airport express 6.3, WPA2 personal, randomly drop connections and fluctuate signal strength (15-5 bars).
My first mbp c2d which I shipped back and a new replacement mbp c2d (pure apple software out of the box osX 10.4.8 + 2006-007 patch, no 3rd party, no data transfered from an old pbG4) randomly drop connections (can easily re-establish, thou) and the signal strength fluctuates between 15 and 5 bars, which cuts the average download speed by 50% (e.g. 4Mbit/s)compared with an old pbG4 which (on the same network) never drops connections and is on average faster (10 Mbit/s ) when close (~3 yards) to AEBS or AE.
In a larger distance (~45 feet) from AEBS the mbp c2d has better signal and download speed than pbG4.

  • Who has a good MBP C2D display?

Sincerely, I need to know from people of have a good MBP Core 2 Duo display.
Because I just went to a Best Buy (sadly, we don't have Apple Stores over here) and had a look at a MBP Core 2 Duo matte display. I could see the uneven illumination and the white brighter stripe at the bottom of the screen. And there seem to have lots of discussion concerning the display issues!
And comparing to an iMac 20"inch C2D display, the MBP C2D had nothing to envy.
Please post your comments and recommendations! (I'm hesitating for an MBP replacement between a new MBP C2D or iMac 20" inch. I'd be ready to give up portability to avoid big issues like uneven illumination.)

I know you were asking if anyone does have a good MBP C2D screen.. but mine is pretty horrible. 17", uneven backlighting all over the place, and a very definite brighter bar along the bottom. also there are lots of 'pinched' areas around the edges where it seems like the display is fastened together, and there very bright patches in these areas.
I get used to it and mostly ignore it while working, but when you start up the machine and it's all grey, it's always a sudden reminder that this screen is awful. it's actually a bit embarrassing given that my machine is the absolute flagship laptop that apple are currently shipping. a director/3D animator friend who saw my machine for the first time the other day was impressed by everything about it, the design, the power, the silent performance.. but when I started it up again and he saw the restart grey screen, his jaw dropped.. 'omg, take it back, that is appalling' is what he said..

  • Anybody gonna cancel order for 17"MBP C2D if shipping gets delayed again?

Just wondering if anybody else will want to cancel their order if our "updated" shipping date estimate is pushed back again. This is my first Apple (not including my ipod) and it has been a bad experience so far. I was looking forward to my new mac world but right now my trusty PC is looking better and better. If the delay was for something other than supply issues I might not want to get on this sinking ship.

I feel your pain...I ordered the new MBP C2D then cancelled the order, because I wanted to wait for some more feedback. I had ordered a custom configuration and when I called Apple to hold the shipment until I was got back to them they said that normally they won't do that and with it being a custom config it was not returnable. If i cancelled before shipment I would be able to in essence get a refund but in that case I wasn't even being billed for it since they don't charge the credit card until it is shipped. this all happened last night (sunday). I was made aware that if it were shipped anyway because it had already been built I could still return it for a refund since I had made the decision and it is on file with Apple before fedex got their hands on it.
fast forward to this morning.....Fedex got it before Apple pulled it from the loading dock......in the end, I don't really mind the situation. I will just drop it back at fedex. apple didn't pressure me into keeping it and even helped me expedite the return. I also don't need a replacement computer, so I am not in a bind.
Also, I guess, it i needed a new 'puter I would be ****** off with the delay....on the other hand, I would anticipate any delays or problems if I needed a new one.
good luck and hang in there....you won't be disappointed (i hope)

  • Can't Remove Office 2004 Test Drive from new MBP C2D.

I received my new MBP C2D yesterday. I'm trying to remove Office 2004 Test Drive so I can install the full version. When I run the the Remove Office application it posts a log on the desktop that indicates that it located the Office 2004 Test Drive folder, but when I get to the Results page of the Remove Office application it does not show me the option to remove the folder. When I click continue it says: "You have not chosen to remove any Microsoft Office items." Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there any other way to remove the Test Drive? Please help!

I installed the office 2004 software, and at the end of the installation it will give you the option to uninstall the test drive software. Good luck.

  • PB AL 15 to MBP C2D not going well

Tried using Migration Assistant but old PB G4 Al 15" 1.33Ghz always froze as Target Disk on any transfer over 5GB (all that mattered). So moved stuff manually, so no big wonder I'm hosed now.
Please spare me the "wipe it and start over" stuff, installing all the apps & pwd's from scratch will be last resort only, and I manage >60 G4 & G5 Macs at work that will soon migrate to Intel so I need to know how to fix things.
So new MBP 15.4" 2.33Ghz is fine except for:
    1. MBP goes online fine at work (web, POP mail, whatever) but typing 1 character into any text field like Google or banks or anything freezes Safari instantly with BBOD. Firefox is fine. Unable to re-install any Java software update or 10.4.8 combo update
    2. At home old PB & MBP will connect to Belkin FD7230-4 wire & 802.11g gateway router fine (wireless or wired), can ARD & fileshare fine between them, Network pref's show "connected to network 'xyzap'. ..connected to Internet via Airport (or Ethernet, or both)" but the new MBP can only get RSS feeds (with Safari but NOTHING with Firefox, web sites get "ur not connected 2 internet" [Safari] and "Server not found" [Firefox] nor POP mail for that matter, haven't tried FTP yet..)
    x. Why does Migration Assistant fail with target locking up? Tried DU & DW repairs, no luck. On manual moves there were a few files that would kill transfers with "can't read or write" type errors, moving them separately by themselves or deleting got past that.
*** does this tell us? Need some help here.
    Thx, dh

Not much attitude about m&a (migration assistant?), but about these forums, I never get any help here.
On about the 5th wipe and install try used ma after install instead of during (not the 1st time trying that way) and it left a log file on desktop (never did b4) which pointed to the mail.app files that were the culprits, deleted them, wiped & installed again and success moving 1 home directory.
That said it seems clear from posts elsewhere that there are issues with "can't read or write" issues. The G4 PB had no problem with the files in question.
And as to internet connections, also obvious from posts elswhere that there r issues with MBP C2D's and wireless gateway routers (NetGear, Linksys, D-link & Belkin (I have Belkin F5D7230-4US8.01.07, what a POS, worked with a couple all day at work trying to set up WDS / bridging, when their "tech support" hung up on me in 1st 5 seconds with 2nd level guy I threw 'em back to wally world). Dug a bit deeper tonight, plugged the MBP straight into cox cable modem again, no luck again UNTIL reboot cable modem then joy.
So reran AirPortUpdate2006002.dmg but no joy. kaka. So anyway gonna mark this 1 done and post over at "Getting Online & Networking" to see if the help there is any better.

  • MBP C2D Wifi Packet Drop Solution

    Hi,
I just figured out my Wifi problem. Hopefully this is useful to someone else.
    The problem:
My Powerbook G4 has worked just fine with my D-Link DI-614+ router for the past year+, but when I got my MBP C2D the wifi connection seemed very slow and unreliable.
Opening terminal and doing a 'ping <router address>' revealed that about 30-40% of the packets were being dropped between the router and the MBP.
I set up my Powerbook G4 as a base station and connected to it and pinged in both directions with minimal packet loss 2-5% which in a noisy apartment building I consider fine.
So, what's the difference? Looking at the advanced tab -> performance settings I noticed that the 'Basic Rates' on the base station was set to 1-2-5.5-11 Mbps but the 'Tx Rates' was set to 1-2-5.5-11-22. As soon as I changed the 'Tx Rates' to 1-2-5.5-11 I stopped dropping packets. For good measure I turned off '4X Mode'.
So the 'enhanced' features of the DI-614+ were causing me problems. As soon as I turned them off and dropped to 802.11b rates it started working just fine.
    Hope this helps.

Many thanks, I too had the same problem with the D-614 and my new Macbook Pro - your suggestion fixed my problem.

  • MBP C2D + Airport Express + WPA frequently loses connection. but WEP OK

many people seem to have wireless connectivity problems with their MBP
-- here is the problem I see with my 2wk old MBP and my wireless setup at home (Airport Express) and at work (Linksys, model# unknown):
    1) MBP C2D + Linksys + WEP = no problems
    2) MBP C2D + Airport Express + WEP = no problems
    3) MBP C2D + Airport Express + WPA = frequent dropped connection, and poor range
    for reference, my previous laptop:
    4) Pismo + Airport Express + WEP = no problems
    5) Pismo + Linksys + WEP = no problems
with WPA (whether WPA or WPA2) and the MBP, I turn on Airport, signal looks strong, but then suddenly disappears. I have to toggle Airport off and on and then (sometimes) I'll successfully re-establish connection - only to possibly lose it again at some random point in time. Or it may work fine for an hour or more - it's hit or miss. no such problem or inconsistency with WEP enabled instead.
both laptops are running OS X 10.4.8. Of course only 802.11b on the Pismo, but results don't change on the MBP whether b, mixed b/g or only g.
The Airport Express is set up as a closed network, it's running firmware v6.3 (though I also reinstalled v6.1 but no change). I've tried many of the various other ideas for fixes - deleted Airport related keychains, etc played with various other Airport config settings - but all evidence points only to WPA as being the differentiating cause.
does this match anyone else's experience?
and more importantly, is there some fix?
thanks in advance for your feedback or suggestions
    MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.33GHz C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi!
Used to have same problems. But not anymore.
Here's what I did. I have a DLINK 624 router. not the same model but this could help you, I guess
    1) Disable Super G mode into router.
    2) Choose a 62 character key with a $ in front of it. (go https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm) and use wpa2.
    3) Uncheck the Robutesse Interference (sorry, i am french) in the airport menu.
    4) Change the advanced performance settings from auto to 11 (Tx rate) into router.
    5) Whent into keychains and only kept the one for the active wi-fi. Since I tried almost verything, there where a lot!
Since I did that, no more lost connection for a day now!
Now I am not saying that this is the ultimate fix....but It worked for me.
BTW, did not do the SMC and EFI upgrade, still a little scared after what I read in the forums...I bought my mac book pro last week...how come it did not came with all the upgrade done??!! bizarre.
    Good luck!

  • MBP C2D 17" delivery in HK

I am not sure if this is the place to post.....
I believe Apple rates US as the most important market in the world.
I've placed the order for the new MBP C2D 17" on Oct 26. Immediately I get a shipping date of Nov 10~12 and delivery date of Nov 13~15, which is almost 3 weeks.
I waited and waited, finally yesterday (Nov 10) I didn't see any change in shipping (WEB) so I called Apple in HK. The sales rep told me it should be shipped from Shanhai China on Nov 11.
This morning, I checked my order status again, it is now:
    Ships by: 15/11/2006 - 17/11/2006
    Delivers by: 17/11/2006 - 21/11/2006
    Another week delayed!
I know for new stuff usually it takes long time to get but this shows that either Apple HK has no clue on what is going on with delivery, or they are focusing on other section of the world and sacrificing HK buyers.
If the computer is deliver according to the new schedule, it will be almost a month to get a MBP 17" from Apple in HK.
p.s. the only optional thing I selected the the glossy screen. Everything else I kept the default selection.

On Nov. 15, My order status on the Apple Web states shipped, with delivery date of Nov. 20. Apple is using BAX Global to deliver my notebook.
I tried to locate the package using BAX Global online tracking but got nothing, got in contact with BAX Global with no good result. (BTW, BAX Global are very helpful, even though they couldn't find this package on the system, they really tried)
At the same time, I send inquiry to Apple, but like my previous request was not yet answered.
Anyway, BAX Global contacted us on Nov 16 around 4:00pm that the package will be delivered on Nov 17 3:00~3:30pm. Will see what happens. If that is true, then the package will be 1 day late compare to the original delivery date. (I know I am in HK)
    Not bad at all.
But honestly, Apple should up the service in Asia because for some reason non of my request gets answered. Even the email notification that I received before (regarding the delay of delivery), was 3 days after the initial ship day, unlike other poster on this forum that gets the notification within a day.
With all the problem such as 'Grainy screen', heat, wireless issues etc. I need to give the computer a good run to see what happens. I will let you know how it perform once I get it. I am on business trip in China right now, will not be able to get the notebook until next week, 8(

  • Mbp c2d help!

hi there i have a mbp c2d and it states on the apple site the idle tempreture is 30 - 35 degrees but mine runs at about 43 - 47 is this normal and also iv noticed the ejects key and the escape keys are at a slight angle to the rest of the keys should i phone up apple and get a replacemtn as i dont live anywhere near an apple store. plz can anyone help

The heat on the specs page mean the heat on the outside the machine is best suited for operating in as an external environment. The heat on the inside of the computer has no published limit. Temperature measuring tools online measure the heat sensor on the inside, whose temperatures have nothing to do with the spec page's heat indication and only have meaning for an authorized service technician since Apple does not publish to the general public what the internal heat sensor maximums are. Generally users here have guessed what the arbitrary heat maximum is based on experience of frequent crashes or random shutdowns just after the heat reaches a certain limit. However, this may be meaningless still because it could be caused by bad RAM, bad preferences, bad cache, or bad permissions. A more reliable indicator would be a hardware test that tells you the RAM is bad, your hard disk getting too full, or repairing permissions or repairing disk yielding something it can't fix. For more on directory and permissions repair, see my http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Before doing any such repair, backup your data as my backup FAQ explains:

  • MBP C2D 2,16 GHz instantly shutdown when unplugged

    Morning.
Since today my MBP C2D instantly shutdowns after appr. 2 sec when the power adapter becomes unplugged. If I only unplug the MBP for less then 2 seconds it remains working.
And without power adapter it's not possible to start the the MBP. When I press the on/off button, it clicks, the fans and the HDD begin to race but after less than a second it shutdowns.
I've tried three PRAM resets and three SCM resets without fixing the issue.
What's wrong? What can I do to fix my MBP?
    TIA ans kind regards, Friedrich

Your battery sounds very healthy. Here is my battery information for comparison:
    Battery Information:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: SMP-ASMB014-3717-8b8
    Manufacturer: SMP
    Device name: ASMB014
    Pack Lot Code: 0002
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0102
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 6488
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 6526
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 53
    Condition: Good
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12543
The only thing that strikes me is that you have all zeros in the Pack Lot code, the Firmware Version, the Hardware Revision, and the Cell Revision, where mine has numbers. I don't know if this is even significant, since my battery is for a 17" machine and is I think a later model.
I am wondering if there is a mechanical problem with the connection between your battery and your MBP--maybe a bent pin or something so that the battery is not engaging properly. The connection might be good enough for the System Profiler to recognize the battery, but maybe not good enough for the battery to run the computer.
Inspect the pins on both the Mac and the battery, and see if you can see what the problem is. If nothing is obvious to you, you might want to have a trained professional take a look, like either at an Apple Store or an AASP.
    Good luck!

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

  • MBP C2D 15" display blacks out!

My week old MBP C2D 15" blacks out on me. I find that it happens when applying light pressure on the back side, at a surface square underneath F1 - F5 - F - Caps Lock. Light pressure makes it flicker, a little harder results in complete black out. Obviously a production fault and I will of course take it in when I have time... this is my work tool so no way I can just leave it in for days. But that is another issue. Maybe someone else experience the same black out? My build is 8N1037

    Hello
Did you find out the reason? The same message shows up in the system.log of my iMac Core Duo after the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update, but the iMac works fine.
Cleaning all caches, repair user rights, PRAM and SMC Reset didnt help. Also no luck with Preferential Treatment tool to check for corrupted preference files, it didnt find corrupted plist files.

  • Help! I Can't Boot from Firewire Drive (Previous MBP C2D Hard Drive)

Can a hardrive from a C2D Macbook Pro start an i7 Quad MBP?
I just sold my 2008 15" 2.4ghz C2D MBP, (that had 10.6.5 installed), and today bought the newest
    17" 2.2ghz i7 Quad Core MBP, (that has 10.6.6 pre-installed.)
I installed a fresh HD on the 15" before selling it, and kept its HD, and put it into a FW800 enclosure.
+(note: The 15" Macbook Pro I just sold, booted fine from this HD in the FW800 enclosure.)+
Before migrating my data, from the FW800 drive, I figured I would upgrade the old OS to 10.6.6, so it would be a seamless migration.
While up and running on the brand new i7, I could see the FW800 drive with 10.6.5 as a Startup Disk option in System Preferences.
I rebooted holding down the option key, selected the FW drive, and pressed the arrow below to continue startup.
The grey screen with the apple came up immediately, but I was horrified that the spinning gear never did appear, and startup froze at that point. I left it like this for five minutes. Grey screen with apple. Frozen.
So, I held down the power key, shut it down, then restarted holding down Command-S to run Disk Utility in SIngle User Mode, (/sbin/fsck -fy). Disk was okay.
I rebooted into the new internal, installed Diskwarrior 4.3, and checked the FW800, and it had no errors.
I opened Startup Disk in System Preferences, and chose the FW800 drive as the Startup Disk, and rebooted. Same result. Grey screen with apple, and no further...
Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?
Should I be able to boot this new MBP i7 with the HD from my old MBP C2D?
Is there something incompatible between the old C2D and i7?
    Thanks in advance!

That CD2 OS will not boot into a new computer's OS.
    Hi, thanks for replying.
I knew that the switch to Intel from ppc, meant a ppc drive, partitioned with APM could not boot an intel machine with a GUID partition table.
    Do you know:
    1. for certain that a C2D HD cannot boot an i7 machine?
    2. and why?
    Ho Lee MACkeral wrote:
Why not use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder?
I am planning on doing this.
    My old drive was 10.6.5.
The new machine has 10.6.6 pre-installed.
I figured that if I was able to upgrade the old drive to the same OSX first, it would provide a more seamless migration.
I was also concerned that my applications on 10.6.5 might become broken if they were migrated to 10.6.6. I really do not want to have to install everything.

  • MBP CD w/256Mb video or MBP C2D w/128Mb video?

    Hi.
Its a shame i am writing my first post in a PC machine..but the reason is im going to buy a MBP very soon.
Im going to use the machine for Architecture software (AUTOCAD 2D n 3D running on windows), Adobe creative suite CS2, etc...
The question is: should I buy a MBP CD w/256Mb Video or MBP C2D w/256Mb? both have 2.16GHz and 1Gb RAM.
Im going to buy it from the refurbished section and both are very close in the price. U$S1599 for the MBP C2D w/128mb video and U$S1499 for the MBP CD w/256mb video.
Could someone give me a hand with this decission? thanks a lot.

If you are going to use the current version, 2007, of AutoCAD you might want to check the the system requirements. The difference with this version is that it does make use of the GPU although I'm not usre how much a difference VRAM will make.
Regarding your choice though, I'd probably go with the Core 2 Duo model. It runs cooler, has 802.11n capable hardware and is capable of 3GB RAM which will be important for apllications like Adobe Photoshop. Be aware that the 2.16GHz C2D model has "only" 128MB VRAM.
