Good Secondary Monitor to go with 24 Cinema Display

I am using a 24 inch cinema display as my main monitor, I also have a Dell Ultrasharp 20 incher on the side. I want to get another 24 inch monitor so I have matching monitors, but I don't wanna spend another grand on another apple monitor.
What would be a good monitor to go with my 24' display. I noticed a lot of them are not as bright as the Apple, does anyone know one that is good quality (doesn't have to be as good as the cinema display. My budget is around 300-450.

I've been researching the same thing. I don't know your primary purpose for a monitor, but I'm looking for one I can use for photo editing and print design--and the high end monitors are far out of my unemployed budget...So if you're looking for a monitor for primarily photo editing vs. gaming, here's what I've figured out so far: basically, be very leary of monitors with super-low response times (which are better for gaming (and possibly movie editing?). From my understanding they achieve this at the expense of color reproduction. The ones to look for for photo editing use S-IPS panels. A few websites warn that some brands (like Dell) might vary the type based on production run. I'll also get either huey, colormunki, or spyder. Haven't had a chance to research those yet.
One I'm looking into is by HP...it's ugly, but it's the least expensive IPS monitor I can find, and it's currently about $530. But I also believe that if a product is any good, the manufacturer will stand by it for 3 years...without charging additional money. (AHEM! I clearly make an exception to this rule, but I don't like it!)

  • Color problems with duo monitor (MPB and 24' Cinema Display)

I have a new 24' Cinema Display attached to my 15' macBook pro 2.66 (not the new one with the SD slot) and I keep getting weird colors on the MBP display.
Here is a screengrab from the MBP. The main display is fine. What is my MBP screen experiencing?!

You can ell the colors are off on Tiger Woods on the bottom and on the background. Please help.

If I may jump in, I have almost the same question and would like to clarify the Cmd-F1 suggestion. (I'm looking at buying the 24" LED for my slightly older MBP with max resolution 1440x900.) If one runs this monitor in extended desktop mode, you can reach the max resolution for the monitor, if I understand correctly, but is some of your "desktop" then spread across your built-in MBP LCD? That's less useful than having the entire 24" available for keeping multiple windows open.
Just want to understand whether this is really worth it! Thanks, and PMFJI.

  • How to simulate windows pc monitors using a mac cinema display?

I occassionally have to produce jpegs to be posted on photographer's websites. These are high-end fashion images and the photographers are really picky about making them look good online with accurate hues, saturation, etc.
On my old iMac I used to 'preview' how they would look on a windows pc by simply changing my display profile to 'Generic Monitor' under system preferences. This worked pretty good and gave me results that matched the windows machines I have in my studio. However I just bought a Mac Pro with a 23" cinema display and for some reason this option is no longer availble, the closest thing in the Displays panel is now 'Generic RGB Profile' and testing this by comparing jpegs on my cinema display to those viewed on a windows laptop on the same desk I can see that this profile does not seem to come anywhere nearly as close to matching the contrast and saturation of crappy pc monitors.
Any one else had this problem? When I call apple tech support they seem very vague about what these profiles are actually meant to represent and why the very useful Generic Monitor profile is no longer present ("that monitor doesn't come with that profile, it's a professional monitor" one tech told me, obviously not understanding what I'm trying to do). This is kind of disappointing given that I've just spent over $6,000 on hardware that doesn't perform as well in this respect as my old iMac did.
Anyone know of a simple fix or somewhere I can download a profile that will work with my cinema display and mac pro? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
PS - I am not very technical so I don't know if these profiles are in some ways connected with the graphic card, my mac pro has an ATI Radeon 2600XT and is running Leopard 10.5.1.
    Thanks!

No, the saturation can't be adjusted during calibration. But the Cinema Display desn't have especially saturated colours. It matches the sRGB standard of most PC displays.
Cinema Displays are normal screens. Macs look different because the operating system adjusts the gamma to 1.8. There is nothing special about the monitor itself.
On the other hand, it will always look more saturated than a laptop screen. PC or Mac ...

  • Vga to dvi with cinema displays?

are the aluminum apple cinema display DVI-I or DVI-D? we have some extras and some people with vga computers (analog out) want to use the monitors. will a vga to dvi-i adapter work with these displays? or are they dvi-d (digital signal only)?
    thanks

DVI-D digital only. A cheap VGA to DVI adapter won't work. You would need an expensive VGA to DVI converter, such as

  • MacBook Pro with Cinema Display - No Picture

I have a 2.16 Core Duo Macbook Pro 17". Today I purchased a 30" Cinema Display at the Apple store.
Because of issues I had heard about I had the Apple employees help me open the box and plug in the monitor to a Macbook Pro on the floor to check for dead and hot pixels and other screen problems. None found. I was so psyched!
I get it home and set it up. I run the DVI cable over to my Macbook Pro and nothing... The MBP screen goes blue and then refreshes when the monitor is attached or detached like it detects it, but under system profiler it never registers an additional display (and I did refresh the info). The soft power button on the Cinema Display triggers my computer to give me the shut down/sleep dialog so something is registering.
Basically everything works on the display but the picture. I just get a black screen. I hooked up my wife's G4 1.67 and it drives the screen just fine with a picture.
    Any thoughts?

Turned out it was a bad DVI port on my Macbook Pro. Logic board replaced and issue fixed.

  • Is it a Good time to purchase an Apple Cinema Display?

I am about to get the Apple Cinema Display and I would like to know if it is a good time to purchase it. Will the display drop price soon? And if it does, do I have any protection from Apple?
The other thing is that I am from Canada and does anyone know why there is a big difference between the US$ and CAN$?
The 20" display for educational in US is $699 and in CAN is $899.
I am sure that it is not because of the currency.
    Thank you

Welcome to the boards. First off the price USD is $799, at this point it does not seem like apple will be dropping the price of the Cinema Displays any time soon, last price drop occured only about 6 months ago. So now is about the best deal your going to get.
As far as any extened coverage for an ACD goes is that if you buy an apple computer AND an Apple Cinema Display at the same time you can get an Apple Care Protection plan for the computer and the display will be covered as well if you buy the the Display at a later date, the extended warranty will not cover the display. Had to find this out the hardway with my PowerBook and 20" ACD

  • Dual Display - help with Cinema Display for MacBook Pro where MB won't detect displays.

I just got a Cinema Display (a1081 20") ("CD") off eBay to use as a dual screen with my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 ("MB"). However, I can't get MB to recognize CD! I've tried power cycling both the MB and the CD with and without USB cord connected. MB won't recognize CD display in any situation. However, it is recognized in some capacity although I can't use dual display because the CD power button triggers MB to ask me if I want to restart, shutdown, or cancel.
    Any help is appreciated!!

Have you tried smc and pram resets?
Try Detect Displays in the Displays preference pane.
Does the Displays preference pane Arrangement show two screens?  If so do click gather windows and check the resolution setting of the new screen.

  • Using my macbook alternately with cinema display and without makes all my screens shift and change in size ?!

After I disconnect from the cinema display and than a few minutes later open up the macbook without the display connected, things are fine. But re-connecting to the display, all the screens are moved and/or changed in size. Anybody any ideas ?

I'm currently sitting in my office using my MBP and looking at a 24" Samsung display. At home I replaced my 4 year old iMac with a 2 year old 13" MBP which is connected to a similar display. That should be tell you all you need to know!

  • 10.4.3 update destroys portrait lid closed mode with cinema display

The 10.4.3 update destroys the ability to use an external cinema display in closed lid mode. In particular using the rotate by 90 degrees option. Once set the external display goes nuts and can not be set back to landscape -- even in open lid mode. Zapping the PRam is not sufficient to reset the display.
    Anyone solve this problem?

I'm interested in this issue too, as I intend to get an MBP but use it with an external screen and keyboard most of the time.
I'd also like to know about ventilation - where does the cooling air come from and go to? What parts need to be kept clear, and which bits can I have up against or close to a bookshelf or hutch or whatever?
    Thanks in advance.
PS, I think the glossy screens look fantastic, but also think I'll go for matte since they are more practical.

  • Ipod dock sync problems into G5 / works with Cinema Display

after buying a new printer i had to reshuffle my usb and firewire arrangements, so i moved the ipod photo dock to the usb port on the back of my G5...before it was going into the back of my apple cinema display's usb port.
now, i get the (-36) message whenever i try and transfer songs with the ipod in the dock when connected into the back of the G5. if i bypass the dock and use the usb cable directly into the ipod it works fine, and everything (dock included) still works fine if it's plugged into one of the apple cinema display usb inputs. i just can't use the dock anymore if it's plugged directly into the G5. i do have Isight hooked up to firewire and some of the other ports used, but Isight didn't interfere with anything before this.
anyone have any clue what's going on?

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to get my iPod to sync. Tried everything that normally cures all problems and quite a few new things. No joy.
Anyway, every so often, due to having to disconnect without ejecting or force quitting applications, my iPod becomes unrecognisable.
What works for me is to boot the computer using my Installation Disk. As soon as you're past the welcome page you will have access to Disk Utility. It always seems to be able to see and repair the iPod. I then cancel the "Installation" and reboot from the System on my Hard Disk.

  • Restarting MacBook pro with cinema display and lid closed?

Is it possible to restart the macbook pro with its lid closed when it is hooked to an apple 20" cinema display?
I have a 15" macbook pro 2.33GHz and want to be able to use it like a desktop system with just the external display when I am at home.
Also should I worry about heat issues running it with the lid closed sitting on the wood desk top?
    Thanks

Thanks, I just realized that I phrased my question rather badly.
My real problem is how to start my computer without opening up the lid. I have a stand on my desk that the display is on and the macbook slides under when it's closed. Having to unplug it and pull it out every time it is shut down and needs to be started is rather a pain. The button on the side of the display seems to work for sleep/restart/shut down, but it doesn't seem to be able to start the computer once it is shut down; so my question is, is this possible?... am I dreaming?

  • Macbook Pro/Sleep with Cinema Display

I have a 17” Macbook Pro connected to a 23” Cinema display with the lid closed.
When the Macbook Pro goes to sleep, eventually, the pulsating white light becomes a solid white light.
The problem only occurs with the Cinema Display connected.
The only way to get the computer to work after the occurrence is to hold the power button down until it turns off and then power it back up.
I would like to allow my computer to go to sleep with the Cinema Display connected.
    Is there a solution?

Taylor_C, I think i'm having this trouble too... but I can't find the USB error in my sys log that you mentioned. Below is my sys log during the time I had to hard reset my computer 3 times due to black screen (well, first plug cinema in to sleeping macbook pro 10.5.2, get a brief leopard desktop flash, followed by blackness with no pulsing light on MBP, followed by me opening MBP to find only black screen, followed by hard reset). Here is my sys log... see anything interesting?? I'm wondering if Parallels is suddenly trying to mess with my USB drivers??? I am using the USB and firewire from the cinema display, will try plugging in to MBP instead.

  • Help! MacBook Air with Cinema Display or iMac?

I've recently been getting much more into Photography, and I would like to do more editing. The only problem is that I'm finding the screen size of my 11" MacBook Air a little too small for it. It's fast enough, but it has quite a small screen, not a lot of storage space....
So my question is, would it be better to add an Apple Cinema Display to it (not necessarily one of the latest ones, I don't mind the older 20" or 23" Aluminium models), or should I get myself an iMac?
I am a student so obviously I will be doing word processing and internet browsing quite frequently, but in all honest my MacBook Air does not move from my desk that much. Any advice would be appreciated! Is having a MacBook in addition to an iMac being greedy?
    Thanks!
