Good setup for editing Canon Vixia HF-S10

Am using a Canon Vixia HF S10 and want to edit. Thinking about an iMac 24 inch with
2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
640GB Serial ATA Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
and Final Cut Express
I see no reason why this wouldn't do the job, but would like some feedback from more experienced videographers and/or editors.
Thanks

You may be right lenn5. It is an amazing little camera. Not just the image but the way the controls are set up. It can be used fully manual. Its manual focus assist feature is especially good. When you start operating the manual focus knob on the front to one side of the lens, it jumps to a close up, a sort of instant zoom that allows for very precise focus. This helps to over comes what I anticipated to be a real short coming, the absence of a view finder. The real test will come when I have to focus in bright sunlight. It has a "brighten view finder" feature which is supposed to help with that. We'll see.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and .mts files

I want to know if I can move an AVCHD .mts file from my Canon Vixia HF S10 camera to my hard drive some place, or archive it, and then drag it into FCPX and start using it.
Or do I have to have it on my camera in order to get footage into FCPX?
I hope not. This is the same problem I had with FCP 6.3. If I moved the .mts files onto my HD, the log and transfer feature of FCP wouldn't recognize the footage. That's pretty stupid I think.
    Any thoughts out there?

I have an HFS100 and yes BUT don't just copy the .mts files.  I copied the whole folder structure across not just the .mts files and started editing right away.

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 and FCE4 - Log & Transfer

Please help. Have been trying for hours and can not find the answer on line, at least one that works. I have a Canon Vixia HF S10 and every time I attempt to "add clip to queue" I receive a red octagon that states "Error: No Data". I am using FCE4, or trying to at least. Does anyone out there know how to resolve this issue?

    Hi -
Verify that you are using FCE 4.0.1.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Now try connecting the camera and see if you can import your files via Log and Transfer.
If there are clips on the camera memory that are recorded with different settings, this can cause problems. The clips need to be all HD clips.
    Hope this helps.

  • CANON VIXIA HF S10

    Hi,
I am still using FCP 5.1.4 and I am very happy with it. I was told that I wouldn't be able to use this FCP version with the new HD camcorder CANON VIXIA HF S10.
    Could someone advise me ?
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan

Yeah, I think your only hope is to find some other software to capture or ingest the footage,
then convert it to a codec that FCP 5.1.4 supports, like DVCPRO HD.

  • Good Article on Disc Setup for Editing

Harm Millard has posted a good article on how to set up one's hard discs for editing. I strongly recommend anyone buying, building or reworking an editing computer read it.

Thanks for the compliment Bill. I appreciate you mentioning it. Maybe Eddie can consider adding it to the Wiki, as I sincerely believe it can help a lot of people in setting up their machine and improving performance. Otherwise I would not have written it.

  • IMovie 09 versus FCE 4 for editing Canon 25f HDV footage

I have two Canon HDV cams. I film 25f (I'm in PAL land). I have used iMovie 06 with no problems for DV editing via this old PowerBook, but for HDV I need more guts so am about to buy an iMac.
I have just purchased Steve Mullen's excellent "The Ins And Outs Of iMovie 09" and note with disquiet his comments to the effect that later versions of iMovie 09, and a new iMac comes with version 8.0.3., will treat Canon 25f (and 24f) as if it were interlaced footage. As a consequence those who require the best possible edit, say to produce a BD, will have to avoid all but the most rudimentary special effects.
I gather that this is in part (or wholly) down to Apple's presumption that those using iMovie 09 aren't bothered about " quality hard copy portable media" and simply wish to flit home movies around the internet or watch them on their " Macs".
Given that this negates the visual quality provided by HD in its various guises, does FCE 4 avoid these limitaions of iMovie 09?
    Ron

Thanks but not an answer to my question!
I appreciate that picture quality is determined by the camera, the lens, whether DV/HDV/FullHD/Progressive/Interlaced etc and not least by the cameraman/woman's skills.
In addition, unless I've got something very wrong, the NLE system will, to a variable extent, via compression/expansion of the original source material during the editing process, degrade the final edited images so that they will never be exactly the same as those input to tape, smart card, hard disc whatever at the filming stage.
I would like to know whether such "image degradation" is the same whether one uses iMovie 09 or FCE.
(I think I am right in saying that FCP provides the least "image degradation" of all the Apple NLE systems.)

ps there is nothing particularly complicated in filming birds. Long lenses are a must, as is a good tripod (my recently purchased Geman video head costs as much as FCP) and good knowledge of the subject matter i.e. birds and how they are likely to behave. Problems include camera movement, wind is a nightmare, over/under exposure, and focussing difficulties.Everything bar white balance is manual on my XLH1. Birds as well have a habit of not keeping still.
Editing for me ought to be straightforward. No fancy FX but a need for good dissolves cutaways and the like. A high proportion of my clips are about 10 secs. in duration.

  • Canon Vixia HF s10 + iMovie '11 -- I must be doing something wrong...

I am trying to download video from a Canon HF s10 to iMovie '11.  I am recording to an SD card.
I put the card in card reader attached to my iMac (I have 10.6.7 running).  I go into iMovie, then go into File, then go into Import.  In the Import dialog/finder box, I click on Canon, then Private, then AVCHD, then Canon, but it doesn't permit me to download, and it doesn't show the four test clips I have made.
Do I have some of the camera settings wrong (I turned off image stabilization, and I made sure it is not on 24 fps or on cinematic), or is it something else?  I know the files are there -- I can play them back on the camera.  Or am I missing some intermediate step?
It is so easy to import with the Flip...
Many thanks for the forthcoming guidance.

You do not need to drill down into the file menu with this camera. It will not work. You just connect the camera and the import screen comes up. If you are drilling down into folders, that will not work for an AVCHD camera.
Here is a tutorial of how it should work.
Here is another good Tutorial from Ken Stone.
If you still can't see the camera after watching the Tutorials, I would check the following.
    1) Can you see the icon for your mounted SDHC card on your desktop (or in the Finder)? If you cannot, you have a faulty card reader or USB connection.
    2) If you can  see the card, try making a Disk Image of the card using Disk Utility. Then mount the disk image on your desktop and import from there.
3( If you have a faulty card reader, try importing directly from the camera. A USB cable should have come with the camera. Be sure the camera is plugged in to AC Power (not batteries only). Follow the directions for your camera for which settings to choose.
    4) If it still doesn't work, I would call Apple and Canon.

  • 3D stereo setup for editing

I've been charged with coming up for a solution to allow for both our modelers (using Maya 2011) and our designers (using the stereo rig in CS5.5) that will allow them to preview their content in stereo on their machines (ex: in the composition window in AE).  Meaning new monitors, glasses, and graphics cards across the board.  After doing some research, it looks like NVidia's 3D Vision Pro with a Quadro card provides a hassle free means of viewing stereo content on ones own machine; however, there is no support for Macs (which is what our designers are running.)
Ideally I'd like to find a solution that is consistent across Windows (Win 7 Pro for our modelers) and Macs for our designers; such that we could both re-purpose the hardware if necessary in the future and provide a consistent use across the studio.  I've not been able to find any solution that supports Macs out of the box.  I'm continuing to look into this but I'd like to know what are other studios are using in their workflow?

    crydrk,
Thanks for the idea about polorization.  I have heard of this as being a viable option on both platforms, but as you indicated, at a reduced resolution (half iirc.)  We have experience with NVidia's 3D Vision and the only time we experienced dropped signals was when we would turn away from the signal.
As far as I can tell, AE does not appear to be capable of real-time stereo editing, where you can see the restults in stereo, outside of anaglyph mode, which would have been the ideal scenareo.  As a result I want to make it as easy as possible for our art and design team to preview their work in as uniform a way possible.  At this time I'm looking more into the 3D TV setup, which should work so long as the graphics card supports 3D out.

  • Will FCP X work with the Canon Vixia HF S10 ?

The HF S10 doesn't appear on the compatibility list.  If it currently doesn't, is there a work around to import files?  Thanks.

Hi pleibowitz. If what you are saying is true, and FCPX can only read from a camera and can't read and edit an MTS file that has been, say, archived on a hard drive, then I can't use FCPX. That's really disappointing. I don't want to pay a bunch of money for some software that can't read my video files except from the camera. How do I archive my original footage, then import and use it later?
This is really sad. All I want to do is be able to drag an MTS file from my HD into FCPX and have it let me start editing with out a bunch of conversion, or transcoding, or converting into ProRes. It just eats up too much HD space. I love how FCPX uses the Metadata and imports it all, but come on, can't I use it without?
I can only assume the metadata that FCPX uses in somewhere else on the CF card or Flash HD of the camera.
I guess I'll be sticking with Premiere. It reads AVCHD .mts files beautifully, from anywhere. Very nice. I may not have all the metadata stuff, but at least I can archive and move .mts files around where ever I want with the confidence that I can use them later.

  • What is the best audio setting for a canon vixia hf r42 with an external mic?

Hi everyone, i have a vixia hf r42 camcoder with an external mic and i wante dto knwo the best settings for the audio on the camcorder.I will be recording marching bands so  the sound will be pretty loud. Thanks for all and any help.

    Hi aj27801!
    Thank you for the post.
There are some presets in the menu that help with different situations.  You probably get the best results for what you will be recording by setting the Audio Scene to Music.
     1.  Touch to open the menu.
     2.  Select [Audio Scene].
     3.  Select [Music].

  • Canon Vixia HF S10 won't even mount to Macbook...

I've got this camera and I know people are having problems with the AVCHD log and transfer issue but this thing won't even be recognized by my fairly new Macbook Pro via USB cable that came with the camera.
Forget trying to figure out how to deal with files, I can't even see the camera...
    Any help is appreciated immensely.
    Thanks,
    B.

    Hi -
Are you asking if you should be seeing the camera mounted to the desktop? Some Canon cameras do not do that, unless you are recording on an SD card and move the card to a reader that is attached to the computer.
You should plug the camera in via USB to your computer, making sure you have the correct connection option for USB set +on the camera+ as I believe it offers an option to connect to a couple of different formats. I believe a menu option appears on the camera when you connect to the Mac to make sure you are connecting correctly.
Once connected, open FCP and go to the menu File > Log and Transfer and see if you can see your clips. Log and Transfer only works with HD clips, so if you have multiple format clips on your card, you may have difficulty using Log and Tansfer.
    Hope this helps.

  • System Setup for editing / motion graphics and color-correcting

I am looking to add a second monitor for previewing in FCP as well as color-correction. I've looked into a JVC LCD 20" Production monitor with SDI, etc. coupled with a Blackmagic Decklink HD card. But that combo costs over $3500. Is there a lower-cost solution to this? A second Apple Cinema Display? Or some other recommendation? And would I need a Blackmagic or AJA card to properly monitor?
    Any recommendations/brands/costs would be appreciated.
The bulk of the footage I edit with is shot in XDCAM-EX format (EX3).
I currently run a Dual 2.3 PPC G5, but will be upgrading shortly to a Dual 2.8 Quad Core.
    Thanks.

You want us to do all of the research and cost breakdown for you? Uh...no.
But I will recommend a low cost alternative. Matrox MXO and Apple Cinema Display (which Apple as discontinued).

  • Is a mac mini good enough for editing home video?

I'm considering buying a man mini to do basic video editing. This will be home videos, nothing heavy. Will a mac mini cope with putting an hours and a halfs worth of holiday clips together?

I would say YES. If you are planning of using iMovie, for example.
I was doing my family videos on my "old" iMac 2007, with Corde2Duo. I'm sure it's quite enough on the new plateform.
At least, it's the first price to do it.
I'm waiting a possible new line of Mac Mini, with latest features to get it.

  • Any Good Programs for Editing MP3's

I just need to clip off a few seconds of the beginning or ending of MP3's (or AIFF). I used to use Sound Studio when still on Panther OS 10.3, but noticed that it now costs $79 for the current version. Isn't there a less expensive option, maybe even freeware?

    Check out Audacity here: [http://audacity.sourceforge.net>
It's similar to Sound Studio, and it's free.
