Good site for intermediate knowledge on Mac system architecture?

I have had up until now only a Windows-based background. My son recently got a Mac. There are plenty of guides for beginners which are aimed at the user-interface level for basic tasks. However I would like to read up on more of the Mac Operating system architecture itself eg I am fairly familiar with using Windows Control Panel, Device manager, the Windows registry itself - basically comfortable and knowledgeable about anything in windows system settings. Have had extensive training in virus removal so can interpret log files etc....I don't need or want to go to the extent of knowledge to program a Mac or anything of interest to Developers, but want to go a bit beyond understanding what the icons in the Dock represent.
Is there a good website to start....yes, I know, playing around with the Mac is the best way to learn but I can't get near it for one thing, and I don't want to go experimenting till I know more about it. Would appreciate a pointer to any good reading material, especially if it has screen shots of various system folders or applications showing the menus available, etc.
As an example, if I download a new device driver in Windows, I know where to look for it...we downloaded an updated printer driver the other day & it self-installed but I have no idea where it was installed....

Thanks guys, appreciate the suggestions, hope I'm not sounding picky/ungrateful for the help, but I'm not after stuff to do with developers/programmers. It's just wanting to find the Mac equivalents of things like msconfig, regedit (if there is such a thing in Mac), disk defrag, disk clean-up, tweaking settings - I guess this kind of stuff is mostly in System preferences? Things like the Administrative Tools in Windows where services can be stopped or disabled....pardon my ignorance if this is not relevant to Mac, I really know nothing about it. Maybe Confucious was right! Might need to get my own Mac The only time my son lets me near his computer is when something goes wrong & then he wants me to fix it. LOL!
Mac OS is (un)fortunately very good at doing most of the above itself. i expect the terminal app can do some of it but i'm no good on the terminal side. i'd use 3rd party apps with a GUI such as Cocktail

    Hello everyone,

    If your friend is preparing a real estate site, I would assume that...
    your friend would use actual photos of the real estate he is selling. There are no existing sites for that. He needs to take his own pictures of his properties.
    your friend might want generic stock photos. The first two links in those google results point you to a perfectly useful paid service and a perfectly useful free service. How you cannot find usefulness in those search results is beyond human reason.
    If you want the benefit of useful input from humans instead of a search engine, provide a useful question. You gave no hint as to what type of real estate and what kind of photos you are seeking.

  • Good site for game app reviews???

    Has anyone found a good site for app reviews of games/entertainment titles in particular?
    I am interested in getting a racing game - either Real Racing or Need for Speed - and curious which one is considered better.
    Thanks, Steve

    I've been using TouchArcade for a few years now to find games for my iPod Touch and they've started reviewing iPad games too. They're great!

  • Good site for Video Editing tools (open source)

    I'm a recent convert to Mac, and I'm having a hard time finding comparable tools to what is available via open source on the Windows side. Specifially in the H.264 arena. There are a multitude of open source encoding tools for Windows. I'm sure there have to be some for Mac. Are there any good sites that list these? I'm tried versiontracker and The Mac Orchard, but I'm hoping for something more specific like VideoHelp.com
    Any suggestions? I'm looking for encoding software that can do inverse telecine, import DivX/Xvid/DV, Trim video (to remove letterboxing), and encode to H.264.
    Thanks!

    Can't help with the video stuff, but since you're a newcomer to the Mac, see these:

  • Goods Issue for Reservation using Bar Code System

    Hi,
    Our client wants to use RF devices to post the goods issue for reservations (movement 261) and reversals of these movements (262). I have checked the RF t codes and I do not see this functionality available.
    Typically client wants to select a reservation from the list (run MB26 on handheld) and then post GI by selecting the reservation.
    Can anybody suggest how to handle this situation using handhelds?
    Thanks,
    -Shekhar

    HI,
    you should developed your own transaction for this functionality.
    You can find some documentation on service.sap.com/scm [Radio Frequency (RF Programming Guideline) |http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000341390&]

  • How good is oreilly site for learning PERL on Mac??

    I am trying to learn perl from oreilly site.
    http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2000/10/begperl1.html
    Instructions said to save this text in a file.pl (I copied and pasted this into a plain text file and named it as p.pl)
    #!/usr/local/bin/perl
    print "Hi there!\n";
    and go to the directory with the file and run from command line perl file.pl
    And nothing happened.
    Then tried these things and finally it worked..
    #!/usr/bin/env perl
    removed whitespace by hitting the delete key..
    Not sure what I did but it worked..
    Any suggestions how to avoid this problem in the future...
      Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Generally, the O'Reilly sites are as good as it gets - they have some of the best technical documentation around, although not necessarily the best for beginners.
    In any case, the link you reference does state:
    In this series, I'm going to assume that you're using a Unix system and that your Perl interpreter is located at /usr/local/bin/perl.
    Like any unix system you need to know a little bit about your environment in order to get the most out of it. In this case perl is not installed in /usr/local/bin and therefore you need to make some adjustments to your scripts.
    Mac OS X installs perl in /usr/bin by default, so you should rewrite the first line as:
    #! /usr/bin/perl

    Well I am rather impressed by the OSX re-release of Solarian II, originally released in the late 1980s I believe and they have kept the appearance perfectly.

  • Good site for free fonts

    This site has a great selection of free fonts available for download.
    http://www.dafont.com/
    For anyone who may not know:
    Download, extract the files. From control panel, open the fonts folder and drag the new font file into the folder. It should then be available for use.

    FANTASTIC - exactly what I was after !

  • Making an iweb site for .mac on a computer with no internet connection

    Hi.
    I am making an iweb site for publishing to a .mac account on a computer that is supposed to have internet access via airport, but it's not working properly at the moment.
    I would really like to transfer the site onto my other machine in my office which has a decent broadband connection (I have iweb installed on there too). Is it possible to transfer a site that is yet to be published from one computer to another?
    regards
    David T

    David,
    You might want to try burning your Domain file to a CD or DVD by using http://iWebFAQ.com/iWebBackup.zip and opening the file & Publish from the other computer while effectively backing up your Domain file in the process.

  • Good Website for Printer Drivers

    I've found this really good site for 3rd party printer drivers:
    http://linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/
    I've seen quite a few other posts in this forum also talk about it. Most of these drivers also need gplgs & Foomatic, both of which are available on this site. This is good for a LOT of brands: HP, Epson, Lexmark, Ricoh, etc. Current version of Foomatic from January, 2008. Gplgs is 2.8.12
    Another good place is http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php. Current version is 5.2.3

    i am using an old imac blue/silver crt for my kids. it is not hooked up to the internet, but i wanted to add a printer to the imac, so the kids could print off their art projects.
    i purchased a HP Deskjet D4360. It says it is compatible for OS X.3.9 (what the imac has)
    When i test the printer, it runs all the printer test pages, however, if i bring up an application, it does not print, and the printer utility says, "no driver"
    we are also running OS 9 Classic, (so the kids can play the mac games that need classic view)
    is this the reason the computer has no driver? is there any help for installing this printer?
    thanks

  • Sites for Flash tutorials?

    I'm looking for a site with really good, up to date Flash tutorials. I have a membership to Lynda, but I'm looking more for short tutorials on things like text effects and feature focused tutorials. Something like the Tuts+ sites, which I believe use to have a site for flash tutorials, would be ideal. I searched the Adobe forums, but the last relavent post was in 2009. THANKS!!!

    http://www.gotoandlearn.com is a good site for tutorials but, you should just lean to use a search engine like google to find tutorials that appeal to you.
