Good SQL learning resource ?

I often scan the discussion group articles because I always learn a lot from them.
There are many constructs used in various SQL examples in this group that are totally foreign to me (because I am a novice).
Can anyone recommend a book or location where I might become familiar with these advanced SQL concepts and how they are used.
I am thinking of something with good examples so Oracle reference may not be satisfactory
Thanks

Hi,
This might can help you.
Buy Oracle 7.3 written by George Coch (X wise president of oracle corporation).
This is the best book i have found and i think i will help you try to get this release and also the new release because the older release have each and every things in details.

  • Need Report Builder Learning Resource -- Books, CDROM, etc.

I'm a seasoned SW architect and I'm pretty good at learning stuff on my own. I need a resources for learning Oracle Report Builder. I did a few of the tutorials on the web but they do little more than take you thru the wizzards. They don't cover more advanced topics like reports with several linked queries.
The only book I found dates from about 1999-2000 and covers Forms and Reports. Only about 20% of the book is Reports.
    http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Developer-Advanced-Forms-Reports/dp/0072120487/sr=8-2/qid=1169213574/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-6435048-1295048?ie=UTF8&s=books
Anyone know how much the product has changed in six years? Would that be too out of date?
There is an CD-ROM course from Oracle for $500. Anyone use that who can give a review?
I know there's also a one week course from Oracle for $3K. I'm not that into sitting in class for a whole week if I don't have to.
Anyone recommend any other learning resources?

    Try this URL
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/reports.html
This has links for 10g, 9i, and 6i. Look for the PDF called
"Building Reports" for the version you need. I just started learning Reports, and it is invaluable.

  • Learning resource

Can anyone recommend a good learning resource for photshop scripting? Something other than the Adobe scripting JS reference guides or Java Script manuals. Ideally,  a course focused on Photoshop Scripting.

As no one else seems to have had anything particular to recommend maybe this book by Jeffrey Tranberry has a chapter of interest to offer.

  • PI 7.11 - SXI_CACHE Issue - SQL 0904 - Resource Limit Exceeded

Hi PI & IBM I Gurus,
We are having the SXI_CACHE issue in our PI 7.11 SPS04 system. When we try to do the delta cache refresh through SXI_CACHE, it is returning the error SQL 0904 - Resource limit exceeded. When we try to do the full cache refresh, it is getting the issue 'Application issue during request processing'.
We have cleaned up the SQL Packages with DLTR3PKG command, which did not resolve the issue. We recently performed a system copy to build the QA instance and I observed that the adapter engine cache for the development is presented in the QA instance and removed that cache from there.
I am not seeing the adapter engine connection data cache in our PI system. The adapter engine cache is working fine.
All the caches are working fine from the PI Administration page. The cache connectivity test is failing with the same error as I mentioned for the SXI_CACHE.
Please let me know if you have encountered any issue like this on IBM I 6.1 Platform.
    Your help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kalyan

    Hi Kalyan,
SQL0904 has different reason codes ...
Which one are you seeing ?
Is the SQL pack really at its boundary of 1GB ?
... otherwise, it is perhaps a totally different issue ... then DLTR3PKG cannot help at all ...
If you should see this big SQL Package, you should use PRTSQLINF in order to see if there is more or less over and over the same SQL in, just with different host variables or so ...
If the last point should be the case, I would open a message with BC-DB-DB4 so that they can check how to help here or to talk to the application people to behave a bit different ...

    Hi,
Here is a book that has gotten great reviews:
Oracle SQL By Example (4th Edition)
    Alice Rischert, 2009
    Publisher is Prentice-Hall.
    ISBN-10: 0137142838
ISBN-13: 978-0137142835Unfortunately I do not have a copy, therefore this "recommendation" is from hearsay. It is very well regarded. Personally, I like to learn by example.
The remaining books I mention are not Oracle specific, (which depending on your viewpoint, could be a good thing)
I am using the following book to learn SQL:
    SQL Cookbook
    By Anthony Molinaro
    Publisher: O'Reilly
    Pub Date: December 2005
    Print ISBN-10: 0-596-00976-3
Print ISBN-13: 978-0-59-600976-2 I recommend this book with some reservations. In many of the solutions he provides he relies on completely artificial relationships in the data (relying on anything but enforced relationships in the data is a very bad thing to do!). If you study the way I do then, those bad solutions are actually a good thing, reworking the poor solutions into something that is production worthy is an excellent exercise. Lastly, if you decided to learn using this book, you will need to read the Oracle manuals to supplement the information (good thing to do anyway.)
    I have also used
    The Practical SQL Handbook
By Judy S. Bowman, Sandra L. Emerson and Marcy Darnovsky
    Publisher: Addison Wesley Publishing
ISBN: 0-201-62623-3I consider this book a very good book. Chapter 2 is probably the best short, succinct and lucid explanation I've read on how to design and normalize a database, why to index, not index on a column and, other fundamental concepts of database design. (I wish more DBAs had read that chapter :( .) The information on those topics is presented in a single chapter, yet, they do a better job at it than other books do in hundreds, if not thousand+, pages. Their explanation of the SQL language is good but slow paced for my taste. Still, chapter 2 alone is worth the price of the book.
Lastly, one thing I recommend is, don't learn just what the test requires. You want to KNOW your stuff. Passing the test is just a formality, be aware of what they will ask but, don't limit your acquisition of knowledge to the domain defined by test.
    HTH and good luck,
    John.

  • What is a good ApplesScript Dictionary resource

    The title says it all....
I have picked up and read a couple of books on AppleScript and am making progress but am essentially stuck at learning and understanding the AppleScript dictionary...
I would appreciate someone pointing me in the direction of a good resource which explains -- in detail -- the understanding and use of the AppleScript dictionary.
    Thanks.

As a first point let me say thank you for taking the time to explain the Dictionary / helping me as this is currently the stumbling block which is keeping me from being more successful in scripting.
As a second point let me say that I am not a programmer in that I have no formal programming experience or training other than 25 years ago when I was a university student and starting my career.  I was, at that time, extremely proficient in programming in FORTRAN, PASCAL and other language of the day – yes, I am old / older.
As far as explaining the hurdle or stumbling block that I am running into i) I have done my best noting it was extremely difficult to do via this media and ii) I will use the Messages Dictionary.
As far as the basics are concerned it is my understanding t—which may be wrong – that:
A Class – the English equivalent of a noun – is the category or group to which an object belongs.  Classes include dates, integers, list, records, etc.  Objects in in the same class have the same Properties.
A Command – the English equivalent of a verb – is an action or instruction.  Classes include [b]make, open, save, etc.[/b]
A Parameter – the English equivalent of an adverb – is an argument or value which more fully explains a Command.  Parameters include save file [b]filename[b], etc.
A Property – the English equivalent of an adjective – is an attribute or quality of a Class.  Properties include [b]count[/b] of letters, [b]name[/b] of a document, etc.
As far as the Dictionary is concerned it is my understanding that the leftmost pane lists all the Suites starting with the “Standard Suite”, the “Text Suite”, the application’s general Suite and finally any other groupings. Each Suite groups together related features in the application.
As far as the Dictionary’s middle pane is concerned it lists the Classes and Commands for the Suite that is highlighted in the leftmost pane.
As far as the Dictionary’s rightmost pane is concerned it displays the description of the Class or Property that is highlighted in the middle pane. The description of a Class may include the plural form (eg “cells” is the plural of “cell”), a list of Elements (eg a range of cells may contain several rows and columns); a list of Properties (eg each cell has a formula, format and lock value) etc. The description of a Command may include a list of parameters (eg “sort” can specify a reference to the “cell range”, the “orientation” and the “key cell data”), and a result.
Based on the above understanding – which may or may not be correct so please let me know – let me explain the problem I am having in understanding / using the Dictionary through a real life example because I think this best explains / illustrates the problem.
I want to write a script that will identify the name of the individuals / people who have sent me a message .
[b]Step 1[/b] – As the information is contained in the Messages application the script must be contained within a tell block.  This results in the following code:
    tell application "Messages"
    end tell
[b]Step 2[/b] – As the information is contained in the Messages application the next step is to access the individual conversations that appear in the Messages window.
I do this by opening the Messages Dictionary’s Messages Suite and scrolling until I find the Chat class (because I believe or think that Chat is synonymous with the conversations).  The Dictionary appears as follows:
This has me thinking that the next step is to access the Chat which in turn results in the following code:
    tell application "Messages"
           set myChat to chat
    end tell
This text is incorrect.  The proper coding is:
    tell application "Messages"
           set myChats to chats
    end tell
[color=red]With that, how am I supposed to know that i) Chat needs to be plural (i.e. Chats) as I see no indication of that in the Dictionary and ii) that Chats contains all the chats (i.e. it is not described as a list)?[/color]
[b]Step 3[/b] – As I have now accessed the collective conversations (or collective Chats) the next steps are i) to access the individual Chats and ii) to access the participants form the individual Chats.   This first item leads to following intermediate code:
    tell application "Messages"
           set myChats to chats
           repeat with aChat in myChats
           end repeat
    end tell
I now focus on accessing participants from the individual Chat’s by clicking on Participants in the rightmost pane. The Dictionary appears as follows:
[color=red] [/color]This is problematic because it tells me that Participants is a list of Buddy but i) provide no guidance on how to access the Participants from the list of Buddy and and iii) provide a link to Buddy.[/color]
Though I am feeling very confused / lost I decide to click on the buddy link.  The Dictionary appears as follows:
While studying the Buddy definition I notice that i) Buddy is a class whose properties include “full name”.  I recall that hierarchy is chat -> participants -> buddy. This leads to the following code:
    tell application "Messages"
           set myChats to chats
           repeat with aChat in myChats
set ConversationSender to participants of aChat
           end repeat
    end tell
[color =red] While the above code works it is confusing to me as to why i) Chat needed to be “changed” to Chats (i.e. the plural) while Participants was provided in the plural (i.e. why was Participants not provided in the singular like Chat). The lack of consistency is extremely confusing![/color]
While this seems to have me on the right path I now need to access Buddy’s “full name”. I think i) aChat contains all the information for a single chat ii) ConversationSender contains all the “list of buddy” for that single chat and iii) because Buddy is a list it needs to be accessed along the lines of “item x of list of buddy”.
With the above hopefully properly reasoned out I now need to think – what item in the list do I want to access / reference.  With each chat having at least one person I settle on the item 1. This results in the following code which thankfully works:
    tell application "Messages"
           set myChats to chats
           repeat with aChat in myChats
set ConversationSender to participants of aChat
set ConversationSenderName to full name of item 1 of ConversationSender
           end repeat
    end tell
[color=red] With the script having run I now think to myself that Dictionary is usable / workable but conclude that this is not the case because i) there was a lot of confusion along the way (i.e. see the red text above) ii) there was the need for a lot of thinking along the ways (i.e. accessing a Class versus accessing a list, recalling hierarchy, etc.).
Worth also noting is that while I understanding Classes, Commands, Parameters and Properties I am still do not by the Dicionary’s meaning / use of the highlighted references / terms in the below image. [/color]
I hope the this post gives you enough information to understand the issues / problems I am encountering in working with the Dictionary.
Again, thank you for all your patience and help.

  • Best SQL beginner Resources?

I know there are a few SQL knowledgeable people here in the PowerShell group. I'm starting to use SQL to track user\group\workstation migrations between domains. Any advice on some good beginner resources? Books, youtube channels, pluralsight cources etc.. My focus will be more PowerShell SQL manipulation, however I bet know more about SQL in general will help.
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    Thanks everybody.
First off, I abbreviated the catch portion for the
sake of brevity. I should have mentioned that.
I too, was under the impression that closing the
connection would release the related ResultSet and
Statement resources. However, another guy in my
group is telling me that I'm wrong. Additionally,
there is an event that took place today which spawned
all of this. The database guy called me to complain
that my app had a ton of open connections to the
database. I've been checking the code all day to
look for any connections that were not explicitly
closed. I did find one, but it shouldn't have lead
to the scale of the problem.
On the other hand, I did have a bunch of
PreparedStatements, Statements and a few ResultSets
that were not closed. I've been cleaning them up as
I go along hoping that will help.
However, if closing a Connection does indeed close
ResultSets and Statements, I may be barking up the
wrong tree. It's also possible I'm wrong. Or that the driver you're using has bugs or does not properly adhere to the contracts. I'm absolutely certain that closing a Statement closes a ResultSet, it's in both the ResultSet and Statement documentation. In fact, many operations in Statement close any existing ResultSet before making a new one.
I don't see at the moment anywhere in Connection that mentions if it closes Statements.

  • PL-SQL learning

    Hi friends,
What book do you recommend for me that could dominate PL-SQL?
    Also sites of learning.
    thanks

I'm not sure about dominating, but Oracle PL/SQL by Steven Feuerstein with Bill Pribyl (and contributions from many others) is excellent.
I can also recommend Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions by Connor MacDonald.
Anything by Tom Kyte is good, though he focusses on understanding and using the database rather than specifically the PL/SQL programming language, and Jonathan Lewis is good for understanding the optimizer. While I'm at it, Christian Antognini's Troubleshooting Oracle Performance is another one worth looking at for an Oracle developer (particularly on understanding execution plans).

  • Project Online learning resources

Are there any good resources online for learning about Project Online/Project WebApp?  I've kind of pieced together some things here and there and I managed to get a Project Pro project imported but I can't find much beyond getting started videos
for actually learning about Project Online.  Or what I do find are old videos from the "preview" version that seem to be more marketing/sales oriented rather than for training.

My fellow Project MVP, Paul Mather, has put together a series of posts which exactly do this.

    Hello,
    Oracle Version 11.2.0.1
I want to learn SQL and specifically row_number...over(partition by clause) and regexp function, because these clauses and functions are very much used into solve the sql questions.  Kindly share your code in action with explanation and/or a good link, book to give me a start please.  I tried to understand from docs, but simple example with explanation will help me to strengthen basics.  Till now I have completed where, group by, having, order by clauses.
    Thank you.

  • More Java in SQL: Viewing resources

Okay, I'm trying to load and use apache's soap.jar into my schema from the HTML DB SQL Command Processor. This is the same jar that I have been using within JDeveloper during testing.
The resource seems to load properly, but when I try to reference the classes of the org.apache.soap package, they cannot be found. Can anyone see something I'm missing in my process? Otherwise, does anyone know how to access more information of the resources that have been loaded into the schema (packages, etc.)?
    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    Jonathan
    Process steps below:
(The jar is stored in a table called file_holder with a blob field called file_lob).
    1) Create the Java resource object:
create or replace and resolve java resource named "soap" using blob
select file_lob from file_holder where filename = 'soap.jar';2) Check to make sure it exists and is valid:
    OBJECT_NAME     SUBOBJECT_NAME     OBJECT_ID     DATA_OBJECT_ID     OBJECT_TYPE     CREATED     LAST_DDL_TIME     TIMESTAMP     STATUS     TEMPORARY     GENERATED     SECONDARY
    soap     -      273057     -      JAVA RESOURCE     18-AUG-05     18-AUG-05     2005-08-18:15:38:58     VALID     N     N     N3) Try to create a Java source using the JAR:
create or replace and compile java source named "JavaTest" as
    import org.apache.soap.SOAPException;
    public class JavaTest
      public static int returnOne()
           SOAPException se = new SOAPException("test","test");
           return 1;
    };4) Check errors. =/
    select * from user_errors where name = 'JavaTest';
NAME     TYPE     SEQUENCE     LINE     POSITION     TEXT     ATTRIBUTE     MESSAGE_NUMBER
    JavaTest     JAVA CLASS     1     0     0     ORA-29535: source requires recompilation     ERROR     0
    JavaTest     JAVA SOURCE     1     0     0     JavaTest:1: cannot resolve symbol     ERROR     0
    JavaTest     JAVA SOURCE     2     0     0     symbol : class SOAPException      ERROR     0
JavaTest     JAVA SOURCE     3     0     0     location: package soap     ERROR     0
    JavaTest     JAVA SOURCE     4     0     0     import org.apache.soap.SOAPException;     ERROR     0
    JavaTest     JAVA SOURCE     5     0     0     ^     ERROR     0
    JavaTest     JAVA SOURCE     6     0     0     JavaTest:6: cannot resolve symbol     ERROR     0

    Hi sekar,
Interesting, you're able to do a 'CREATE TABLE bla...' but are not familiar with 'SELECT'? I would suggest to read some basic stuff about SQL statements. What will you do when the next task is: "Hey, I need a pgm to change these values in the table!"?
