  • Good time to buy?

Would it be a good time to buy the iphone 3G?
How long before the next one or an updated one comes out?
faster wifi or processor chip?... more memory?.. better camera?
Basically anything thats not upgradeable though firmware updates.
I made this mistake when buying my macbook pro, new one came out a few months later... I still like mine better

Something new will always be in the works. The best time to buy any technology is when 1) you need it 2) you can afford it and 3) the existing feature set meets your needs at a price that seems reasonable to you. If you always wait for the next new thing, you'll wait forever. Conversely, if you can't stand the thought that if you buy now you'll be upset when the next model comes out, whenever that is, then wait.
If you do choose to buy now, buy with the full understanding that eventually there will be something newer, flashier, shinier, neater, etc., but that won't stop your current product from doing exactly what it did when you bought it and being just as snazzy as you thought it was when you purchased.

  • Is it good time to buy Mac Pro with display?

    Hi There,
I am thinking to buy Mac Pro with display and I wonder if it’s good time to do that. Displays still waiting for update. We have been waiting for Mac Pro update long and as far as I see the update wasn’t what people generally expected.
And disappointing thing about Blue-ray drive as well. I think it was good time to put one in by Apple.
So do you think its good time to buy all that stuff or wait longer and perhaps better Mac Pro with new display will come out soon?
    Regards

Um no.. It's more than an "extravagant speed bump," the new Mac Pro is using the new 45nm chip architecture. In addition, the significantly larger cache and faster 800mhz RAM make for drastic performance increase.<</div>
    Um...yes..
and with this new faster processor, I'm to do what with???...open an Excel spreadsheet a nanosecond faster, get a few more fps on Doom3? Woop-tee-do! I now have 8 cores but most software uses 1 of them while the other 7 purr in idle.
BluRay/HD video is here... or should I say HAS BEEN here for over a year now.... how am I going to use this new super-dooper processor with editing, creating, and authoring HD video and discs?
A faster processor at this point is meaningless without the tools to use it with.
All they did with the new MacPro is give you a computer that is worth the fixed $2800 price tag.
Reminds me of the tire commercial on tv where they describe this car with exotic and powerful 12 cylinder engine, and plush leather seats, and race proven suspension...... but with no tires.
It all looks great on a spec sheet, but you can't use it to do any real work.
I can film HD video all day long, but I can't use a Mac to put it on disc...... (but I can use a Dell!!)
There is no way anyone can explain this other than political.... I would bet that this has something to do with Steve's affiliation with Disney and other studios in regards to his doomed movie rental snafu. Apple has always been the ground breaker in bringing such technology to the market first (a mouse, a cd drive, multiple displays, a superdrive, etc.), and usually before the consumer even understands they need it. To be this far behind with BluRay, he's got to be holding back for a reason ... and I would love to hear it.
I've been a Mac user for 22 yrs and have only been embarrised to be so twice... once when the fruit flavored iMacs were introduced (eventually proved to be the best selling computer model of all times), and now with the absence of BluRay. I've been hoping Steve will prove me wrong again, but I've been hoping for year now... and am still waiting.
Um... No, the Mac Pros power isn't gonna do much for an excel spreadsheet.. However, I bought mine to use with Logic Studio which does take advantage of all eight-cores and the faster front side bus and RAM, and the performance is remarkable..
Just for kicks I timed how long it took to rip "Finding Nemo" with my old G4 dual 1.25 ghz using Handbrake's Apple TV preset... The G4 took 7 hours and 54 minutes.. My new Mac Pro did the same job in 24 minutes..
If you really want a Blu-Ray drive in your Mac Pro, then just buy one and stick it in the empty optical slot, but be prepared for the price tag... http://www.mcetech.com/blu-ray/
And if you use one of the Pro apps that takes advantage of multiple cores, the new Mac pro is a dream.. If you don't use one of those apps, you probably don't need a Mac Pro. At any rate, you're whole spiel about the Mac pro's power being trivial or useless is nonsense..

  • Good time to buy an ipod touch?

    hey,
im thinking of buying an 16gb ipod touch at the moment but a little unsure so i have a few questions, perhaps someone could help me out?
    - i read about firmware bugs, problems with video etc. is this still an issue for people and is it likely to be sorted out immenantly?
    - do people think it is likely that a larger than 16gb touch will come out in the next future (next six months lets say)?
the inclusion of mail and google maps has made me really want to buy one but not sure yet!
    Dan

Regarding deficiencies of the touch, you should consider points made here last september:
Engadget give it a less than stellar review:
And the ilounge review here where they give it their lowest ever rating of an ipod.
    to quote:
"iPod touch doesn’t equal or surpass the best portable products Apple has released this year"
It is a very nice device and all but its clearly not as good as it could have been. The next gen will probably be much better if they decide to put more effort into it. But I don't feel confident that they'll put much effort into it because I don't think they know what to think of this product. Apple loves the iPhone as that brings in much more revenue, and they love the nano because its sells so well. Apple obviously loves the Mac. I don't think Apple loves the touch. For sure they don't love original touch customers (of which I am one). I recommend you consider other options before spending the money.

  • Good Time to Buy Shake?

I am considering buying Shake but I have heard a lot about a possible replacement software called Phenomenon. Does anyone have any info on this, and should I go buy Shake now? Also, how many installs can you do with Shake? Because I have 2 computers I use for editing. Thank you.

Shake is a great environment to learn and do top-notch compositing.
For what you get, the price is fantastic.
    Nodes rule!
There is a lot of literature and expertise out there to help you learn.
You can get to work now.
Authorization is by entering a serial number.
Two machines with the same serial number can not operate on the same network.
On the other hand, Shake has been end-of-lifed.
Apple has taken a few of its components (smoothcam, optical flow retiming, etc.)
    and merged them into FCS.
Apple is letting the moment slip by for releasing something like Phenomenon,
as Nuke begins to take Shake's place.
Rumors of a 2008 Phenomenon release have turned out to be empty.
Providing real support for specialty software like Shake or Phenomenon
is quite expensive because of the small user base; it makes more economic sense
for Apple to offer a package like FCS.

  • Good Time To Buy?!?! MBP

    Looking at a MBP 15" 2.8ghz 4gb ram
I will be doing word docs, itunes, and Final Cut Pro video editing on the laptop. The reason I ask this is because of how many people are having freezing problems or have they figured out the problem now and the Brand New Laptops on the shelves today dont carry the freezing problem?
    Thanks!

I am not aware of any specific freezing problems. I have not even seen a significant number of comments with respect to freezing for any generation of MacBook. Having said that... there are some people experiencing issues after a recent firmware update who have installed their own hard drives / SSDs. If you don't plan on installing your own drive, this isn't an issue.

  • Good time to buy an iMac?

    Hi All,
I currently own a 2006 Macbook Pro and I really like the new 27" iMacs but with Intel releasing new processors yesterday and USB 3.0 gaining ground, I'm wondering if I should wait for an iMac refresh later in the year. Do you think that those upgrades are coming for the iMac and are they substantial enough to warrant holding out for one? Thanks!

The Intel processor announcements I noticed were for chips running slower and some with less cores that are designed to run on laptops, not the iMac desktops. As for USB 3: there are also other new fiber optic-based transfer protocols under development that could see the light of day this year but no one knows if and when they'll arrive until the announcements. I would not wait if you need a new computer now. You may wait a year and see little change while missing the pleasure of using a powerful computer today.
If you need more features or power, consider (the next iteration of?) the Mac Pro as that will surely be an improvement on the iMac.

  • Time to buy?

OK, I've been waiting since June for Apple to iron out any problems with the MacBooks before I replace my 12" PowerBook G4. Are the newer models better? Is now a good time to buy?
Looking to buy from John Lewis (UK) who offer a 2 year warrantee as standard. Thought this might be best on a portable.
    Any happy customers out there?
    Dual 2Gh G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, I would say now is a great time to buy. I just got my Macbook about a week ago and it has been flawless. And with Core 2 Duo the speed is amazing.

Where are you and where did you get the phone? All iPhones come with a 1 year warranty from the original date of sale.
Make an appointment at the genius bar of your local Apple Store and take it in for them to have a look at.

  • HT1449 Can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?

    Hi
Would anyone know if I can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?
This would give me some hard drive space on my iMac and more importantly mean my iTunes library is available all the time. Although I have Home sharing I need my iMac on and if not I use iTunes on iCloud I always seem to be downloading the tracks I need.
    Current configuration / devices:
    iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007 - nearly full!
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    OSX Mavericks
    Time Capsule (1TB)
    iPad
    iPod Touch
    Apple TV
    iTunes 11.1.5 (5)
    Many thanks

What "devices" are these?  By devices I normally understand i-devices and not computers.  How many computers?
If you put the whole library on the Time Capsule (TC) you can only use it with one computer at a time because the iTunes library file can only be opened by one copy of iTunes at a time.  If you put only media on the TC but have a copy of the library files on each computer you can use media by multiple computers but you then have the headache of trying to make sure that any changes done to the collection by one computer are mirrored by the libraries on the other computers which will be more or less independent.
I hope this TC isn't also your backup drive.  When the TC drive fails (and it will someday) then your whole collection is gone.  Don't rely upon Apple to always have copies for you to download.  For one, if a distributor puylls an item then it is gone period.  Additionally, Apple only keeps media, not the actual organization that is your set of library files.  If you do this, buy another backup drive.

  • The Time To Buy iPad, Or Not?

    Hey everyone,
I have been thinking about buying the iPad ever since it came out and to this date have not been able to. I have the money, but is now the time to spend it on that 9.7" beauty? I would like to use it for web surfing, email, apps(of course), and I would also like to pick up on the reading for the rest of high school. This is the time for me, I need to decide in the very, very near future. I need two burning questions answered though, is it the right time to buy? Also, Which one to get? As far as which one to get, I plan to use this mostly around home and of course whenever I travel. I think that as far as videos go, I would be putting a few on when I take some trips then take them off if I find myself not viewing them often. I would always have my computer relatively close though, so I would be able to get content on and off quick.
Merging into the next question, I would only get the 32GB if I would have it for a while. If the next one would have killer features then maybe I should wait off for the next generation. The feature that I think is guaranteed is a front facing video camera, I don't think that I have a huge need with that. I have my MacBook Pro for most of the stuff like that. I don't know how much I would desperately need the speed bump that could also surface next spring, because, like I said I have a laptop that I do a good amount on. Or do I not need one at this time? I am a big fanboy so this product is in my mind a great buy.
I need some help here, just tell me what you think. Anyone who has been in the same situation or is in it themselves, feel free to chime in.
    Thanks for any help.
SIDE NOTE!!!!!: If anyone has some thoughts about refurb iPads coming up, tell me as well. I don't think they are coming since it has been a while.

I just got my 32gb 3G iPad about a week ago for my bday and I'm absolutely loving it. I was planning on buying one myself but was saving up for it. Anyway since it had been a few months since it came out I thought to myself that if I waited this long couldn't I just wait till the 2nd gen but I decided that I still wanted it. Also I figured if the 2nd gen came out and if it had some feature that I just couldn't live without that I could probably sell my 1st gen iPad for a good amount. I've owned every version of the iPhone (except the 3Gs) and I've always been able to resell them for a good price.
The reason I wanted the 3G was in case I wanted to use my iPad somewhere wifi wasn't available. But so far I haven't had to activate the 3G service.
The other thing I love about my iPad is that it really is useful. I've only used my laptop to add movies to my iPad Undoubtedly when school begins I'll need to laptop for writing papers and such. But otherwise my iPad is perfect for carrying around and using everywhere. Until the iPad I was considering buying a new MacBook Pro 13" because my 15" (almost 3yrs old) was just to heavy and cumbersome and I didn't like carting it around, even in the house (4 floors).
Anyways the point of this rambling is if you want an iPad go ahead and get it now.

  • Is now the time to buy? (The CREATIVE ZEN 8

I want to know if now is the time to buy, people on these forums don't seem happy although I have read reviews on amazon/play etc. and they are good on the whole
In a slightly off-topic way: I hear that video playback is limited in resolution. I have x-vid videos with width 624 and height 352 pixels. Normally I convert them to MP4 with PSP Video 9. Will the x-vids work on the Zen or will even the converted .mp4 work
    Many thankz for help.

everything is great on the zen. Appearance, video converter is great and even crops widecreen videos to 4:3 without stretching, sound quality is great and has a bass boost which is a v nice extra . The only thing which lets it down is the battery life, can perform well straight after a charge ( ran a whole 2h30mins film losing under half life) but tends to drain when not being used a fair bit. Having said that it is however a lithium ion battery (like in a laptop) so cant be overcharged unless u leave it long enough to overheat and damage, and also can be topped up all the time.
Neway i say get it it's the best media player out atm i reakon

  • Time Machine AFP shares for client machines

I have migrated a Mac Mini from 10.6 Server to 10.7 Server. This is my own internal mail server etc so it is not too critical.
I have a DROBO connected to the mini and the DROBO has been partitioned into 4 partitions. Three of the partitions are shares which I used for the Time Machine (TM) backups on my MBP, my wife's iMac and the mini server. The fourth partition was for shared files. All this worked well in 10.6 but it seems broken with 10.7. I did this so I could limit how much space was available for each client machine's TM backup.
First in the Server.app the TM service I though was just for the server but it seems that once you specify this it created a shared folder which serves as a target for client machine backups. There doesn't seem to be a way of designating specific shares for different client machines.
Second, the shares that I used in 10.6 are still there and permissions are correct but even though I can connect to the share via the finder, TM on a client (MBP running 10.7) looks like it stalls during the preparing backup phase then fails.
If you cannot specify individual shares for client TM backups this is huge step backwards! With little or no documentation and a ludicrous dumbing down of the Server management interface I can't see 10.7 server as anything but a toy. Not to mention the switch from MySQL and removal of pptp VPNs this product is just half baked. Sorry but the more I use 10.7 server the less I like it.

Well, it appears to be working. I used the "Connect To Server" option from the "Go" menu of the Finder and connected via IP address. The Mini is set up with a static IP. I'm not sure if it is working consistently, yet. I got one good Time Machine backup so far.
I do seem to be experiencing some inconsistent network behavior as far as seeing the Mini on the network via my Lion machines. It seems to drop off the Finder sidebar for no apparent reason. Will post another update later.

  • HT203208 Why do I have to keep putting in my security code every time I buy?

I have to put in my credit card's security code every time I buy something from iTunes. I seem to be the only person that has to do this because I've asked friends and they don't have to do this. Is there a setting I need to change in my iTunes profile?
    Thanks in advance.

No Problem Demo.. They said to keep trying they would get back to me later this week, she had to talk to the tech people that has a longer history than what she has availabe.. We also ran the diagnostics on the ipad and all is fine with the firmware and the battery.
One thing that leads me to believe i am locked out of the servers, when i do a restore through itunes I get that little lock in the window just above where it says the servers are unavailable.
I have also been intouch with verizon and they said they would run some diagnostics on there end and would get back to me, that was 2 weeks ago.
Thats what I like about apple they're good on the follow up.
