Good troubleshooting book for tiger

hello, has anyone heard of the "x-lab" book by dr smoke? is it pretty good? i read a little and it seemed like it could help. before i get it i wanted to check and see if anyone knows or can recommend other books for troubleshooting and repairs and such for tiger. i have the missing manual book and its good, but it's more like an intro to tiger. i would like to learn how to fix my mac and do troubleshooting and learn more about the os.
thx

Hi! Dr. Smoke is one of the "masters" and is revered by all one these boards. It's a good book to have around in that time of trouble especially if you don't have another computer that you can use for research on a problem. Also one of the best ways to learn is by reading the posts and especially solved ones. You'll soon pick up on the best "experts" and you'll always find yourself reading anything they post! Tom

  • Can anyone recommend a good instruction book for intermediate Mac users?

I have been using Mac for 3 years now so am not a total beginner, but still need help in many areas of OS X use. These forums are brilliant and thanks to the willing help from more expert members I have learnt a lot ( thank you), however there are times when just having a book open in front of you is the easiest way to get to grips with something. Can anyone recommend a good user manual for people like me who don't need a real beginners guide but also don't want a mind numbing, in depth, advanced text. I already have Maria Langers Visual Quickstart Guide which is useful but is exactly what it says, a quick start, and David Pogues Missing Manual which I find a little frustrating as he seems to fall short of explaining exactly how to do something after he says it can be done!
I guess what I am really after is a clearly written book that is good for beginners and more advanced users alike, with screen shots to show you what you should be doing.
    Grateful for any suggestions.
macbook white 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512mb ram and 60gig hard drive,

    Hi again,
Many thanks for the feedback and the star!
For troubleshooting, Dr Smoke's Troubleshooting Mac OS X eBook is invaluable. Again, I have the Panther edition. I haven't, yet, felt the need for the Tiger edition with so many of the tips available free via his FAQs.
The only drawback, of course, is that when one is in a fix and possibly unable to boot up, the e-book isn't accessible unless one has a copy on another Mac.
    Have fun,

  • Good tutorial book for non-flash developer?

I need to learn flex for our company. I am a .NET developer
although I have used Flex 1.0 before and was doing well with it. I
am by no means a flash developer, so I'm looking for a good
beginner to intermediate book for someone who is looking more at
flex application development rather than design.
I need a book that focuses more on database/XML/webservice
integration and not something that focuses SOLEY on rich GUI's.
Yes, I would like for the book to focus also on design, but not
have that purely be the focus.
What do you all recommend? Thanks!
    Ryan

I found the book Adobe Fex 2 Training from the Source VERY
helpful. I read and did everything and am also finding it useful as
a reference. One reason I liked it is that it takes you through an
appliation step by step refining the application over time as you
"discover" more succinct/efficient ways to do things (e.g. making
components and a more reusable design). It takes you through
multiple ways to get at server stuff too. I also highly recommend
reading the Cairngorm articles posted on Adobe's website to help
you get off on the right foot using good design principles for
    Flex.
P.S. I am very much a newbie myself and am still climbing the
    learning curve.

  • Is there a place to download address book for tiger?

I was dumb and pasted my address book from my laptop which runs 10.5, to my G5 which is still on 10.4...so I pasted the address book application to the G5, overwriting the original file and the new file doesn't want to open...so is there a way to get the old address book from somewhere??

You don't need to download Address Book, nor can you. It's on your 10.4 install/restore disc. You just need to insert the disc, navigate to the Optional Installs folder, open the Optional Installs.mpkg file and check the box to install Address Book and run the installer.
You will also need to run Software Update to update your system to 10.4.11 if you haven't already done that, or apply the 10.4.11 Combo Update again to update Address Book to the latest revision for Tiger.

  • Good reference book for FinalCut Express

Can someone recommend a book for a beginner in FCE?
    Thanks

I don't agree with that. The book does cover some advanced topics but everything from the basics upwards is covered. For example, "Title" in the index lists page 479: "To generate a basic title screen".
    1. To generate a title screen, do one of the following:
    - From the generator pop-up menu in the lower right of the Viewer window choose Text > Text.
    - On the Browser's Effects tab, choose Text from the Video generator folder (Figure 17.7).
The new Outline Text Generator appears in the Viewer.
2 In the Viewer, click on the Controls tab to access the generator's controls; then specify your text control settings as outlined in the previous section, "Text generator options checklist" (Figure 17.8).
You can specify only one font per text generator.
    3. Click back to the Viewer's Video tab and edit the text clip in your sequence in the Timeline. If you want to superimpose your text over video, choose the Superimpose edit type when you perform your edit (fugure 17.9).
You can edit, filter, and animate text clips as you would any other video element.
Pretty simple and complete. I find it useful to remind me later how to do something once I have learned the technique from doing one of Tom's Lessons in his book.

  • A good Java book for beginners?

    Hello
I am new to Java language. This year I will go in university (computer science major) so I thought I could study a bit during the summer. So I have choosen to learn the basics (or more) of the Java language. I dont know any other programming languages (So I am completely new to programming too).
I would like to know which is the best online-downloadable book with which I could start to learn the basics of Java (using the Sun's SDK or Borland's JBuilder Personal)? Any suggestion would be appreciated.
P.S. Is it good to learn programming using Java as the first language? A friend of mine told me that is better to start with C, then continue with Java.

Everyone will say that the language they first learnt is the language you should start off with. Java is a good as any language to start with. Whether to by a book or use an online tutorial depends on you.
Online tutorial are up-to-date, but require a good internet connection and plenty of access to a computer.
Books can be carried around (read in bed etc.) but learning about computers away from a computer is weird.
A good book (to download in PDF or buy in a shop) is "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel. It takes you from beginner to expert, in only 1,125 pages!!
If that's not your thing, try the sun tutorials, links on your left.
    good luck

  • Address book for tiger

Hey guys. I just deleted my address book app completely. is there any way i can download it from a website or can i get it from software cd. Thanks

    Hi Ralph.
You can reinstall Address Book as described in the second part of the following article:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
Note that Address Book may appear grayed out in the installer, but will be checked if you check Applications there, and will be installed if Address Book has been removed from the /Applications/ folder.
If the version of the system software on the Install discs is earlier than what you’re running now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re running, to bring Address Book back in sync with the rest of the system:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.

  • A Good Guideline book for Database systems

could any one tell me what is the best book regarding database systems that covers issues like transaction processing, locks ,database recovery, database design , concurrent control techniques, etc ...
and i need the book to explain the concepts then to explain how are those implemented in oracle databases.
    Thanks

I will just add my generalised tuppence-worth:
Anything written by Tom Kyte or Jonathan Lewis is a must.
Most stuff published by O'Reilly probably deserves a look: I know their technical review process is tight and their production qualities are high.
Anything published by Oracle Press needs to be treated with caution. The later books (last year or two) are OK, but much before then is distinctly iffy in terms of technical precision and accuracy.
Practically anything published by Rampant Press should be on your 'desperate and dateless' list. Whilst the material some of their stuff contains is mostly factual, it is also often highly simplistic and equally often just a dry regurgitation of the official documentation with not much by way of explanation or insight offered to supplement it. Their material reads often as if it's written to a deadline rather than to a quality control directive. Grammar is often poor; technical subtleties are often missed or described plain inaccurately; production quality is oftentimes dubious.
None of that makes them evil (deadlines are a fact of life in a commercial environment, after all), but it does mean I would turn to their stuff last and least, if at all.

  • Good JSP book for beginners to intermediate level

    Hi:
I want to buy one book, could you suggest one?
how is "JSP 2.0: The Complete Reference, Second Edition"?
    thanks.
    -Z

well, that depends very much on your background. If you are really new to JSP and Java, I would suggset 'SAMS Teach Yourself JavaServer Pages in 21 days' by Steven Holzner. It is very simplified and easy to understand. However, note that since it is some basic, it doesn't cover a lot of in-depth details.

  • Whats a good JAVA book?

What do you think is a good Java book for someone who has a little expericne with java? I have experience in COBOL and a little touch of C, and Visual Basic? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Justin

I would suggest Java: an Introduction to Computer Science and Programming by Walter Savitch. This book assumes that the reader has no programming experience and it's aimed at students. I realize that you do have experience with COBOL, but I would recommend this one over the Core Java series to start out. Core Java volumes 1 and 2 are not good as an introduction for someone coming from a non-object oriented language. They would be a lot better for someone migrating from C++. They frequently refer to C++ and VB in their examples. They are excellent books, but better as a reference than an initial learning source.

  • "Good" beginners book to Oracle DB administration

I am as new as it gets to Oracle and I need a good beginners book for database administration. During my searches online I have found mostly poor reviews on all the Oracle DBA beginners books I've found, including Oracles 10g for beginners own publication. The one book I've found that is highly supported, but not necessarily for the newborn, but a must have is "Oracle Database 10g Insider Solutions". I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books for beginners, that are good books, and for beginners. Those seemed to be the two most common problems in all the reviews I read. The software I'm going to be using is Oracle 10g.

Please do not consider reading any other Oracle books before reading the Oracle documentation. Tom Kyte offers a good list here http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/06-mar/o26asktom.html. See the section "Where to begin". I also strongly advice reading his book Export Oracle Database Architecture for fundamentals, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1590595300/sr=8-1/qid=1154697462/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8631501-9759232?ie=UTF8.

here is a sample the service class handling REST stuff:
    myServices.factory('resService', [ '$resource',

                    method : 'PUT',

  • Good reference book

    Hi,
MII was introduced to our company just some days ago. So, the knowledge of the subject is quite poor. Now we're searching for a good reference book for MII to have good and quick support.
I'm wondering whether the following would be a good choice - well, we're just beginners in this moment ... :

Propably you have a better idea!?
    Best Regards

    Hi Michael,
As per my knowledge This is the only book on SAP MII which is availble
It is a very nice book.
other than that I use to follow SAP MII Help.

There is plenty of documents and blogs available in SDN for SAP MII you can check out below URL
