@Harm Millaard could you have a look at the Kingston RAM I've picked out here and tell me if is really 1.5V memory or if it uses those Micron chips? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-121-KS Are Kingston a bit dodgy and should I consider a different brand like Corsair (they would be my first choice but I'm a bit restricted in height because of my CPU cooler.
Tell me what you think!

The Mac Pro's are pretty killer for AE. On a Winbox, you simply get the
best processor(s) you can afford, max out the memory, get a good board
like ASUS or a Tyan if your really into finnicky thoroughbreds. The Vid
card will have little to do with AE, so research that on its own merits.

  • What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?

What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?
*also, It would be great if I could edit multi-channel audio on the software
    Any suggestions?

probably THE best software is Avid Media Composer. It's an industry standard for Feature Films, Television programs and commercials.
Professional editors and producers around the world have told them what the software needs to succeed.
-More efficient and easy-to-use video editing tools. An open platform that enables you to work with everything you want and integrate into any workflow. More power to eliminate bottlenecks, so you can work faster than ever.
-Create 5.1 and 7.1 surround mixes directly within Media Composer, or import from Pro Tools (watch the video)
I own this NLE and it truly is the best out of all of the editing programs I've used.
** It's quite expensive though. But worth it if you want the best!
    ~$2,499.00
Another option would be Final Cut Pro. The little brother of Avid MC. I have Final Cut Pro X and I am very disappointed with it. It’s not an update of the existing Final Cut, which is one of the most popular programs; it’s completely new and radically redesigned. It looks different, its strengths are different — "and after one day of using it, many professional video editors are running through the streets with pitchforks."
Final Cut Pro X Review - NY Times
** It's a good starting program if you just doing editing that isn't quite as demanding as feature films, TV programs and commercials. Many editors have been moving away from FCP after the release of the current version. However, It is a lot less expensive than Avid MC
    ~$299.99
Personally, having both Media Composer and Final Cut Pro X, I would go for Media Composer if it's in your budget. Definitely worth the price!

  • New video editing system for AE, GPU questions

    Hi all,
I am about to configure a new system to use mainly for After Effects CS6, and Premiere CS6. I'm experiencing some difficulties choosing the right GPU.. If any of you could take the time to answer these question for me..it would be greatly appreciated!
    - I read the GTX 7xx with Kepler structure aren't supported/CUDA cores aren't used, is this true of do they work fine?
    - Does a good video card (with 1000+ CUDA cores) only help for speeding Ray-traced 3D, or will the overall editing experience be faster as well? ('live preview' while editing 'normal video', as well as the final render?)
    - What are the critical factors to look for in a video card for editing? (GDDR RAM, Base Clock, Memory Speed, Memory Interface Width, Memory Bandwith CUDA cores) I mainly work with 1080P digital SLR video and video effects, not a huge amount of 3d texts etc.
    - If i would choose the GPU as render engine, will the work be done purely by the GPU, of will it just 'assist' the CPU?
    - So far, i think the GTX 760 would be a good option, what is your opinion about this card for AE editing? Would this be a good choice or will a GTX 6xx or GTX 580 be a much better option? My budget for the whole system (without monitor etc.) is max. 1000 euro.
    - Would buying an SSD for storing the program files and the project files, be helpful? Or won't this increase the speed in editing by too much?
The system I have on my mind so far, recommendations and changes are very welcome..

The GPU acceleration for Premiere is completely different than the Ray tracer acceleration in AE. The GPU specifications along with the system ram and CPU cores/clock absolutely effect the performance of the playback in Premiere. Which means selecting the correct GPU is based on Premiere's MPE acceleration and the workflow/media used. The concept that comes into play here is processing latency. A older card with 1GB of vram and a single or dual core CPU may be able to playback a single 1080 stream by itself without any scaling. However as soon as any effects or frame alterations are added then the time it takes for the data to process at the cpu, buffer into ram, and then process through the GPU is to long to maintain the playback. The clock speed of CPU, Ram, and GPU/Vram all come into play as to how long it takes for this entire pipeline to process. The amount of threads and cores decide how much data can process at any point in time. The more layers and effects to process along with frame changes, the more data that has to be processed in any time segment required for playback. This is similar to how much water needs to go through a pipe. This can be increased by either increasing the size of the pipe or the Water pressure in the pipe by how fast the water is fed into the pipe. Both aspects have their limitations based on where the water is coming from and going to and what the conditions required are. A balance is normally required between both the size of the pipe and the amount of water/pressure sent into the pipe. However the greater the volume of water required at any time segment the greater both aspects must be increased. IE this translates over into clock speed equals water pressure and threads equal size. SSD's also have a significant aspect on processing latency. The latency of SSD drives is a fraction of mechanical drives. This means the amount of time it takes for SSD drives to handle all of the read or write requests made by the application is significantly lower. This translates into lowering the amount of time drive requests effect the overall performance of the realtime playback along with how fast files are written. Since codecs have different data rate requirements often times SSD drives are cheaper options to handle data rates that normally require significant raid setups that are expensive. SSD drives also handle far more requests simultaneously which translates to putting more operations on a single disc. This often translates into better performance with more complex timelines or compositions.
The comments regarding GPU specifications not really having any impact are relating to AE only. This is absolutely not the case for Premiere, AME, and Speedgrade or almost any other GPU acceleration application.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo...good video making system???

First off...we have tried in a school district environment with our Mac lab on a network to start a videography educational direction. I have about 60 hours invested after school hours in this learning curve, and the last week especially I've called, "**** week"...
I have a video as the art teacher I created that is 55 minutes long...but to put the long story short, couldn't get iMovie5 to finish with the second half of audio yet to go. It dogged down, video freezes up while audio can be heard, hitting the stop command takes about 20 seconds more for it to respond. Sounds like a RAM problem...or size problem, but in another forum we've determined it is not. I still show 122GB of space left. The problem is that apparently in the transfering of data to our tech's computer room with the larger server and network, something is getting lost and the project has its problems.
So...we approached our grant writer (as we have some money to use) AND THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN...
We have determined it might be best for us to have a stand alone machine. No internet, no network chattiness of machines and a server.
Our tech looking on the educator's discount machines put a proposal together for this Intel Core 2 Duo machine....plus 500 GB...
I would like some feedback, one...the tech thought that perhaps this computer might come stock bundled with iMovie and iDVD already on the machine. Is this true...? Can't see that on the apple.com pages. Secondly, would you recommend the Final Cut Studio 5.1 for an additional $499.00 if there is no iMovie and iDVD over ordering the latest version of iMovie/iDVD?
would you recommend Final Cut Studio 5.1 even if the computer comes stock with iMovie/iDVD and if so...why?
    thanks

Hi there, this week i became a core 2 duo iMac owner after previously using a G5 iMac as my main editing system. I have the 17" C2D iMac now and it is approx x3.5 - x4 time as fast so whether you go for iMovie or FCP your gonna be sorted, just make sure you dont go for the really cheapy that uses the shared grafix, and the more ram the better.
As far as the system go's i like many others would class it as a big no no to go for a large internal drive to store video, audio etc. You need to bare in mind that your OS is on the internal drive and the two will be competing, thats where the problems start. I would recommend going for the bog standard 160Gb and investing in an external FW400 drive to store your project files on, if you can blow the budget and get a 24" iMac then they have FW800, even better. The price Apple charge for HD's i wouldn't imagine it's any less costly, just research the Firewire drives and make sure you get a drive that has the Oxford 911 chipset, they are renowned for providing the best performance on macs. Check out OWC computing over in the states for these types of drives.
As for which software you go for will depend on the complexity of your projects and how much freedom you want. Final Cut Studio is a phenomenal package and i absolutely love it, i have to be honest it took several months of fairly intense learning to fully get to grips with how the apps integrate but once you learn them, literally, the sky is the limit.
I personally find iMovie somewhat restricting, i.e. you can only have one stream of video and i think two streams of audio. On the flip side it has some great transitions and sound effects that allow someone with very little editing/film knowledge to make a fairly cool video. I'm guessing the question here is fun vs. complexity.
I mainly find myself using FCP to edit and iDVD to author. I have the freedom to do what i want in FCP and then just modify one of the iDVD templates to give a nice front end. DVDSP4 isn't something i've found you can enter in to lightly, i.e. you have to manually link everything but the flips side is total control over the project.
    Hope it Helps

  • Advice on A video editing system please

    Hi,
I'm a serious hobbyist/user of a lot of the Adobe family, PS, Illustrator and more recently Premiere Pro.  I've got a Cloud membership package.
My question is this (and I know there will be the full spectrum of kit here from very high-end to low-end, plus Mac v PC) - what would ppl class as a good mid to high range system for me. This is it currently:
    asus P7X79 Pro mobo,
    16GB Ripjaws 2400mhz DDR5,
    Intel i7 3930K 3.2Ghz,
    Intel 250GB SSD (Boot),
2 x WD Raptor 500GB Drives in RAID (Media storage),
    2 x 120gb SSD drives both scratch.
ATI HD 7950 3GB Graphics (I know NVIDIA for MPE) but I cannot justify buying a Quadro card as this system is only 8 months old and was well suited to the graphics and illustration work.
NEC PA301W 30" IPS screen (25th Wedding Anniversary present)
To give an indication of how fast it performs on processing video currently - a 2560x1600 at 60fps which is in .avi format, gives me 4GB raw footage every minute - If put through AME and encoded to 1920x1080 using H.264 30fps AAC, it takes 4 mins to process each one.  these settings give me good end quality against file size.
Is this reasonable? could I maybe change anything and what would you recommend if that is the case?  and if anyone has any comments on the settings, i.e. they should be something else, feel free. I'm learning the program through adobe CIB and a well known online video training site.
I'll take all the help/advice you can offer.

    GraphiteGal,
Your system is quite strong overall, and your 25th Anniversary gift 30" sounds pretty sweet, but you do have two weak spots in the "balance" for a top notch Premiere Pro rig.
Most importantly, you should get a nVidia GTX video card to support the MPE (Mercury Playback Engine) capability. You do not need a Quadro and a GTX 670 or something similar would be a great fit for your other components.
Secondly, but WAY less critical, 32GB or even 64GB of RAM would help some with render speed. It would also help a lot with After Effects, but you did not state that you use it now.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • Looking to buy new MacBook Pro for editing with Premiere/After Effects, but wondering about trade-off between Processor Speed and Graphics Card

I'm a professional video editor (using Premiere and After Effects) looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am deciding between two models. The slightly older model has a 2.8GHZ i7 (3rd generation) Quad Core processor with a 1GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE GT 650M Graphics Card. Then newer model has a 2.3GHZ i7 (4th generation) Quad Core preocessor with 2GB SDRAM of NVIDIA GE FORCE 750M/Intel Iris Pro Graphics Card.
Which makes the most difference (processor speed vs. graphics card) with editing with Premiere and After Effects?
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Your MBP will be somewhat slower than your iMac, as reflected in the general speed; desktop Macs have more RAM and storage.
You recon? If he get's the 17", he would have up to 8x more RAM, 4 x more GPU,, and  a bit faster CPU;.
    2. Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of extra RAM. Loading up the slot will make juggling multiple applications easier, like Photoshop, VLC, and Safari. However, more than 4gigs of RAM will make loading your MBP on startup twice as slow - at least a minute, probably longer. That's why a MBP user with extra RAM should sleep their machine nearly always when not in use, rather than powering off.
I did not know this, I just upgraded from 4gb to 8gb the other day. Have not noticed it being slower, but I don't often shut it down. It's nice to not even have to bother with ifreemem.
    3. Additional storage and RAM will maximize the basic capabilities of your MBP, but you won't be able to make a 2.3ghz machine any faster than it already is.
    SSD
    4. I still feel that your iMac will be faster than your prospective MBP. The only way to dramatically increase the speed would be the installation of a SSD drive (like the lauded OWC series). But they're not cheap.
I don't want to rain on your parade, but want you to get a more realistic idea of your performance.
I chose a macbook pro, 17" of cause. I use it for gaming. Yes a iMac is better for gaming. But, it's nice to be able to move around. Set up a man cave in the lounge 1 week, or in the bedroom, the next. But you fork out a lot more dosh for that luxury. And yes, not as much power as Poikkeus has said.

  • CANON XA10 10.6.8 Good Video Editing Software

Ok, here's another Canon XA10 user needing help.  Just bought the camera and will need to get video editor.  Any good suggestions as to which brand plus whatever necessary converter software also if needed?  Read a lot of the other posts from everywhere, but can't seem to sort it all out yet.
    Please help.  Thanks.

I just installed OuickTime 7 Pro in my Mac Pro Ver 10.6.8. The video I am trying to view is codec h264 Compression dvcpro 50 hd. I have audio but no video. It says I need other software with QuickTime for it to work. Dose anyone know what I need?
H.264 video should be supported by your basic Snow Leopard operating system. The DVCPRO HD family of codecs is part of the Apple "Pro" codecs package which is normally installed as part of a "Pro" video editing suite installer or contemporaneously installed separately as part of one of the newer pro editing apps like FCPX. if you already have one of these pro suites or apps installed or available, then re-install the correct codec package that is missing. If not, you will need to purchase a Pro suite or app to be able to install the required codec package.

  • Video playback speed in After Effects

After importing QuickTime video into After Effects it plays back at about half (or even slower) the initial frame rate (13 fps or so instead of 29.97 fps). Also in the top right corner of the workspace (Info Panel) I'm getting a message that "...Layer 1 Retrieving Frame".
Could you, please, give me an advise how to return video playback to normal speed?

Technically possible, but not an ideal workflow. I can also cut through my filet mignon with a spoon, but I can do it a lot faster and with much less frustration if I use my steak knife.
I edit in Premiere and then use the Import>Adobe Premiere Pro Project option in After Effects to bring my edit into AE.

  • Trimming Video Saves Memory in After Effects CS4?

I'm working on this project, and I've got a bunch of large video files.  If I trim the video within the composition, does that save me memory  giving me longer RAM preview or speed things up?? Or would you suggest trimming it before importing it within the  composition. I'm worried if I trim the video before importing it, maybe  using VirtualDub or AfterEffects itself, I would lose the quality?
The clip was recorded using Fraps in 'full screen' mode, and I'll be  outputting it using After Effects to 1280x720 pixels. I need  to retain the quality so people can view it later in Youtube in HD.  It's a 6-min composition.
The problem is that the files are really large, a 2min30 sec footage  being around 3GB, and I'm not getting RAM preview longer than maybe 5-6  seconds now due to the number of files in the composition (most of them  will be used). I even turned on the multi-processor option and increased paging file memory. I was even using a 4 gig flash drive with Windows ReadyBoost.
    Composition Settings:
Preset: HDV/HDTV 720 29.97 (is this the correct setting if I want to post it up in Youtube HD?)
    Durating: 6 mins
PC: I got 4GB RAM on my system.
Total size of files: Around 20GB, 190 files.
There's one more issue, I actually need to crop the bottom/top part of the clips. For now, I've scaled the clips to exclude the top/bottom parts I don't need, but I was wondering if I should've cropped before importing them to the project. That would probably give me longer RAM preview, but then if I cropped the dimensions those clips beforehand would they lose quality? (Once again, done using AE4 or VirtualDub)
    Any help is appreciated

    >  If I trim the video within the composition, does that save me memory  giving me longer RAM preview or speed things up?
What, exactly do you mean by "trim"? Are you referring to shortening the duration of the video in the source file? That has nothing to do with RAM preview.
    > I'm not getting RAM preview longer than maybe 5-6  seconds now due to the number of files in the composition (most of them  will be used).
The number of files used as source for a composition aren't relevant to RAM preview length, either.
    > I even turned on the multi-processor option...
    Don't do that.
You only have 4GB of RAM. That's not enough for using the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature.
Also, by using that feature, you dedicate RAM to the background rendering processes, which subtracts RAM from what's available for RAM preview duration.
You have very little RAM, so your RAM preview durations aren't going to be great. See this FAQ entry for some tips on mitigating this:
