Good (wireless) internet, but poor local wireless performance WRVS4400N

In short: I have a good wireless connection with the internet. But when I want to connect between two computers in the network the performance is VERY slow. I connected one of the computers wired and the performance was good.
I have Firmware Version: V1.1.08-ETSI
I've tried several options XP<->XP, XP<->HDX-1000, XP<->Vista. But always the same, when wired OK, when wireless BAD.
I'm running out of options here, please help!
Eelco

Hello,
after a firmware update it helps often to reset the configuration to factory defaults. Theis prodeure may help:
Disconnect all wireless connected PC's.
Save your old configuration "RouterCfg.cfg" to a save place.
Reset the WRV to "Factory defaults".
After the router finished the reboot login with user "admin" and passwd "admin".
Now you can restore the configuration "RouterCfg.cfg" saved in the 1st step.
If that is not helpfull you should use the following test sequence:
Disconnect all wireless connected PC's.
Enable the "Wireless isolation within SSID" feature
Connect all wireless PC's.
Download a large file from all wirelless connected PC's simultaneously.
Measure the download speed.
Disconnect all wireless connected PC's.
Disable the "Wireless isolation within SSID" feature.
Connect all wireless PC's.
Download a large file from all wirelless connected PC's simultaneously.
Measure the download speed.
Copy a file between the wireless connected PC's.
Measure the copy speed.
Report the reults to that forum.
Best regards

  • Windows XP hooks up to internet but NOT local network

I have an Airport Base Extreme with a local network that includes my machine and an old B&W G3 and my son's iBook G4. My other son has an IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP SP2. We've looked through the discussions and he's been able to wirelessly hook up to the internet but he doesn't show up on my local network. He's used the info from http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1011.html to help him hook up but he still doesn't show up on my network and he is repeatedly disconnected from the internet. Any ideas?

I'm running the WEP, that's all. My husband just got a new Dell laptop (from work). He was able to hook up to the network without a problem but I can't see him on it either. I can see the Mac and iBook that are on the network but not the Windows machines. Also, when I click on the airport icon in the menu on my iMac, I only see my network. My husband's PC sees other networks that are in our neighborhood.

  • Connects to internet but not local network

My AX worked fine for the past year. While traveling I disconnected the AX and set the wireless mode in Airport Admin Utility to 'Wireless disabled' and then connected an iMac by ethernet wire for our housesitter. All worked well. On my return I plugged in the AX and reset the Wireless Mode to 'Create a Wireless Network (home router)'. All appeared to work well for the past week. Until today.... when I tried to print wirelessly to a printer connected to my server in the office outside our home. The MacBook Pro was unable to find the printer or the server. It was formerly able to this with no problem.
The MacBook Pro can connect to the internet by the AX but not to my local network.
When I choose 'connect to server' from the Go menu I'm unable to locate the server. I determined that if I enter the local address in the 'server address' window I am able to connect but remain unable to print. My former protocol was to choose the 'browse' button and choose from a list of possible computers (their are a number of Macs possibly on the network).
If I take the MacBook Pro across the driveway to the office and plug into my network the computer finds the server and the printer with no problem.
I've done a hard-reset twice - to no avail. And attempted a factory default re-set 3x but don't believe it worked since the green light didn't flash 4x as expected - it came on briefly and then turned amber while it re-started, but when I used Airport Set up Assistant all my former settings were there and the same password I had entered so I don't believe it reset to factory defaults.
    Yow!
    I'll really appreciate any assistance.

  • Internet, but not local, service always drops at same time each day. HELP!

    Hi there,
At first this was laughable but now it's becoming a real pain.  For the past three weeks, sometime between 4 and 6 AM my router or modem drops the internet connection, but leaves the local only service in place.  After a simple reboot with the router everything is back to normal.  I am wondering what could be causing this?  It's always at the same time.  This doesn't happen at all during the day.  The router does not indicate a problem with anything, since it can still generate local service, just not internet.
We did recently upgrade to the high speed internet up to 7000 instead of 2000.  It's been happening since then.  We're using a Westell 2200 modem (have had for years, it seems) and an Apple Airport Extreme for a router.
Any ideas would be appreciated.  I am not sure how to get the numbers that were spoken of.  I do have a phone plugged into another jack, but that's it.  Have the inside wire maintenence plan if need be.
    Thank you!
    ---Sarita

I had the same arrangement and Verizon sent a new 6100 modem/router for the higher speed service.  The old modem did quite well but could not maintain the higher speed sync.  I was advised by Verizon, when I upgraded to the higher turbo speed, that a new modem would be needed.  I received one for no charge.  I was surprised that the old unit performed as well as it did considering it was not designed for the higher speed.  I suggest you call Verizon and request a new unit.  I am in MA also.

  • Internet Explorer and local playing

Hello, I have a Captivate 2 project that when I play it from
the internet with IE everything is fine but if I try to play it
from the hard drive or CD Internet Explorer blocks it. Published
version only, the preview from Captivate is always OK. The Safari
on my Mac does it fine but from a windows machine IE pops up the
yellow bar and then gives an active x warning and then an x where
the swf should be. I can open the swf using IE but not the htm. I
need it run from a CD. Why is it OK from the internet but not
locally with IE. Thanks and desperate!!

    Hello there,
This sounds to me that you are running into the Microsoft IE
security change that was first introduced in Win XP SP2.
The logic behind this warning is that active content
(Javascript, ActiveX, Java, etc.) in a web page has more freedom
when run from a web page in a local file. Web pages downloaded from
an internet web site run in a more restricted security zone that
prevents many potential malicious actions. However, the local
security zone is less restrictive than the internet security zone.
So according to Microsoft, local web pages are more dangerous than
    internet web pages!
The workaround is to use the Mark of the Web; this will force
local web pages to run in the Internet security zone.
To add the Mark of the Web to a web page, just add the
following at the very top of the HTML file.
    <!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet -->
Note: The HTML comment must be properly formatted for
Internet Explorer to parse the information correctly. Proper format
includes inserting a space immediately following the opening
delimiter " <!-- " and just before the closing delimiter "
    --> ".

  • Suggest a good wireless router...

    Hello guys,
Need some help here. Being a total n00b @ computer technology, I need some advice purchasing a wireless router. We recently moved to a duplex house and got a wimax internet connection for which I need a wireless router. We also have a Vonage VoIP phone using a Linksys RTP300 which off late developed some issues.
So can I get a device which acts as both a VoIP adapter and wireless router?
If that's not possible i need a good wireless router and VoIP adapter.
I have zeroed on to a cpl of linksys routers viz.  Linksys WRT54GL, Linksys WRT 310N, Linksys WRT 160NL.
    My requirements would be:
1.Being a duplex house I need good reception on both the floors.
    2.Good data transfer speeds.
3.Budget is 150$ max(for router and voip adapter).
I have a cpl of laptops(Vaio VGN FZ35GN and 3 year old Dell). Heard a great deal abt WRT54GL but a lil apprehensive abt its performance compared to WRT 310 and 16NL.
    Help me guys.......

There are few things that you need to rule out - Out Of The Box - which are the following:
    1. Can you access WPA2 (Personal) on all the Laptops since you have mentioned that you have old laptops.
    2. If you cannot then you should try a Linksys WRT54 (G/GL/GS/GX) Since you can connect older ones with that model.
    3. If you do then you might as well go with a WRT310N so that you would be good to go even if you create a gigabit network.

  • Disappointed with TCs wireless performance--help!

I have a 1TB Time Capsule which I believe has the same wireless part as the Airport Extreme and my wireless performance and range is surprisingly terrible. Is the Airport Extreme known to have a better wireless characteristic than the Time Capsule? Do you prefer it over the TC?
-When I use "N" only. I cannot connect just two rooms away with my MBP and my iPhone cannot use the signal...
-When I use the N (with B & G compatibility), the range is extended and I can use it in my other bedroom but videos streaming to my Apple TV (full DVD rips or EyeTV recordings) do not play reliably...
Also, I can only connect 3 ethernet devices to my TC... I would like to expand this. Should I use a different router and ethernet switch on the front line and use the TC for NAS an WAP (Wireless Access Point) only? What's your topology and what router do you recommend? I need about 5 ports.... also, if I'm using the TC or Airport as a WAP can I use the switch on that box in addition to the ones on the router?
    Thanks,
    Robert

The best wireless bandwidth performance available would be to operate the wireless in the 802.11n only (5 GHz) mode with both wide-channels enabled and with the radio channel set in the higher range (channels 149 -165 in the US).
I assume that you don't have the latest simultaneous dual-band version of the TC so in order to maintain that bandwidth, you would need a second AirPort, like an earlier 802.11g Extreme or Express to create a second wireless network for your non-"n" clients.
As you are already aware, the 5 GHz radio does not penetrate through walls as well as the lower frequency 2.4 GHz band nor has the distance.
The bottom line, for best HD (especially 1080p) streaming performance, you would need Gigabit Ethernet.

  • Looking for a good wireless server..

I've tried Roadrunner's wireless service and it was horrible, does anybody know of any good wireless services?

I'd look into getting a Netgear DG834G instead. This is the best-selling wireless ADSL modem/router/switch for a reason.
For half the price of Airport Extreme you get pretty much the same set of features, plus 4 Ethernet ports instead of one.
Plus, there is also Internet content filtering, firewall with DoS protection and SPI, 50 user VPN pass-through and most importantly (for me that is), remote configuration from designated IP addresses only.
Or, if you are looking into a VoIP solution in the future, a WGR613V (http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/GWirelessRouters/WGR613V.aspx) would be the sweet spot.

  • Good Wireless Router for iMac

I just ordered my first Mac, an 20" iMac G5. Now I need a good wireless router for it. I looked at the Airport Extreme Base Station, but it sure is pricey. Any suggestions on some more reasonably priced wireless routers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Clayton,
Although a bit pricey, the next router I buy will be the "AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes". It is a full featured router that is certainly compatable with any other AirPort equiped Mac -- including WPA excryption. That router has the added Apple AirTunes feature that you will not find on any other router.
If you want to go the cheaper route (no pun intended) then I have had good luck setting up friends with several different models of both DLink and Linksys routers including my current DLink DI-624. I have had nothing but success connecting several Apple PowerBooks with old and new versions of AirPort cards to several different makes/models of these routers and can't say I have ever had difficulties.
One thing to watch when using WPA is that you choose exactly the same settings on both the Mac and the router such as "WPA-Personal" using "TKIP". Note that some routers such as Linksys may call the same settings "WPA-PSK" and preselect "AES" instead of "TKIP". As long as all of your protocols match and your network name and preshared key match then everything should work as expected.
Also, when choosing a model don't be fooled into paying for any of the "Xtreme", "Speedbooster", "SRX", "pre-n", or "MIMO" routers. Unless you have special needs the vast majority of home users simply need a basic 802.11g router.
The one last bit of advice I have is to NOT install the software that comes with home wireless routers (except for Apples'). Instead, simply use your web browser to connect to the routers IP address (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and then use the built-in web configuration to make all needed settings including the minimum: 1) changing default password, 2) turn off SSID broadcast, 3) set up wireless network name and WPA encryption, and 4) turn on NAT firewall.
    Best of luck,
    Tim

  • E900 cabled vs. wireless performance

The wireless connection barely registers in the Speed Test within Cisco Connect - .56 download, 5.35 upload.
A cable connection gives 2.4 download and 5.5 upload.
The E900 is not far from the computer with no obstacles between.
Is the wireless portion of the E900 set up improperly?
Is there anything I can do to improve the wireless performance?
    Is the unit defective?
Any suggestions or clarification is much appreciated.

Make sure the wireless settings are configured manually like you've created a different SSID not just the default so with the wireless security settings.

  • What is a good wireless printer that will work with a macbook and windows laptops?

What is a good wireless printer that will work with a macbook and windows laptops?

Any printer that visibly supports OS X will work fine. My personal recommendation is Brother, followed rather distantly by Canon.
Recently I have grown to favor Brother printers over the others. They are inexpensive, their OS X integration is well-implemented, their consumables are reasonably priced, and their technical support is free forever. If you need to call them and explain that you have a Mac, you will immediately receive competent assistance.
The third and subsequent choices are so far down from those two they're not worth mentioning. I have grown to dislike HP printers, for all the above reasons.
Read user reviews from vendor websites - Amazon is a good place to start, since Amazon lets people write almost anything they want... right, wrong, or completely idiotic.
Read the reviews on the respective manufacturers' websites as well, but consider the likelihood of them deleting negative reviews.
Process all those user reviews employing your own common sense, and draw your own conclusions.
Consider AirPrint compatibility for future needs. Those features add very little to the price over a USB - only or wireless printer. Understand that not all wireless printers are AirPrint compatible - AirPrint must be specifically indicated. Choose among this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
After OS X compatibility, the next consideration should be the cost of consumables. Laser printers are cheaper than inkjets in that regard.
Here is a list of AirPrint compatible Brother printers and multifunction devices
