Goodbye Entourage, Hello Mail!

We just upgraded to Exchange Server 2007 allowing me and others in our organization to use Snow Leopard's Exchange client. Wow!
Between a natural impulsiveness and a visceral contempt for all things Microsoft (despite us being Microsoft developers), first step I removed Office 2008 completely along with my Entourage data files.
Whereas 21 months of my email took up 6GB of file space on our Exchange server, the same email took up close to 36GB on my MacBook Air, this despite my having gone through the awkward process of compacting the data base a few months ago. So first dividend: 30GB of additional HD space! Huge on a 128GB drive, especially when I was previously down to under 5GB.
Next benefit: Goodbye, Entourage! No more constant crashing, increasingly sluggish performance, no HTML support, no access to Exchange global address list, inability to see my iPhone messages and numerous other inane and insane bugs and deficiencies (compared with Outlook) such as listing 'sent' search results by sender (me) rather than by recipient.
Just being able to forward HTML formatted emails, paste HTML content into emails, view my iPhone sent emails, easily send emails to all or a group of our staff...
And so far I have seen no problem opening, modifying, creating Word, Excel and PowerPoint files using Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
What joy!
Upgrading from Exchange server 2003 to 2007 cost us over $10K...and it was worth it. A while back we started to buy our staff MacBook Pros, even to run Windows. Now they are beginning to convert to running Snow Leopard full time.

Satcomer,
Thanks. I forwarded to our sys admin.
The joy continues. My Air runs a multiple faster and without the fan running (Entourage had become more and more unstable and had begun to consume total CPU spontaneously). And Mail is a pleasure to use as in it just works.
And Microsoft has announced they will ship Outlook for Mac in late 2010. Before or after they close their retail stores, I wonder?
Apple rocks!

  • Switching from Entourage to Mail: use Entourage Groups?

I'm attempting to switch from Entourage to Mail and Address Book (not least because of the attractions of smart folders, etc), but I can't figure out how or if I will be able to send occasional email mailshots to large groups of people.
I run an occasional newsletter in email format. Because the list is very large, it wouldn't make sense to set up individual vCards for each individual email address on the list, and yet that seems to be the only way to email all the members of a group using Mail and Address Book.
With Entourage, on the other hand (and I would dearly love to wave goodbye to it in all other respects) I could set up a Group exactly as I would set up an individual contact, then copy the entire list to it, and could even add occasional new email addresses whenever I liked or delete others as they opted to leave the group.
Am I missing something in Mail / Address Book, or will I have to cut and paste into the To: box my entire long list each time I need to send a mailshot? (And doing that would involve using a word processor or text editor in order to manage the list, which is adding yet another programme to what should be a pretty simple task...)
Many thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

Yes. Importing your mail from Entourage does not affect the Entourage database.

  • Outlook emails at work - transferring to mac Entourage or Mail or anything at home !

    Hi,
I use PC Outlook at work.  I have loads of personal emails but work does not allow me to use the "export" function to export any emails from my work system, even if personal (ugh).  So I cannot export my emails or folders as a .pst file (or anything else).
What I am able to do is copy and paste individual Outlook emails on to my personal hard drive, as a .msg file.
Is there a good way I can transfer these .msg files on my hard drive into a readable format on my Mac at home (e.g. I have Entourage or Mail or Yahoo or Gmail)?
I know I will have lost the date/time stamp/ordering system, but I would be happy just to be able to access the email text and attachments (even if not ordered by date/time).  Is this possible?
Apologies if this has been discussed to death on these forums.  I have tried searching the forums but most of the previous discussions seem to presume you can export the files from work, rather than the messy cut and paste of .msg files.
    Thank you.

Oh !  I have now found a discussion thread which recommended this, which looks like a solution: http://www.element26.net/products/shop/outlook-msg-viewer/  .  This forum is great !
But if anyone has a better solution (i.e. a free solution ! ) or a better tip of transferring Outlook emails (without using the "export" function, as it is disabled at work), then I'd be grateful.
    Thanks.

Just moved my email from Entourage to Mail. Having real problems with getting my signatures to work properly despite sending email as Rich Text.
When adding in a small company logo to the signature, PC's / windows computers only receive signature and logo as attachments.
I've tried all possible fixes I can find including getting a PC user to format the logo but no joy. Has anyone experienced this and any ideas on a fix gratefully received.

Send it as html so the signature is an image source URL

  • Migrating from Entourage to Mail, iCal and Address Book

    Hi
I am currently trying to figure out a smart/safe way to move from Entourage to Apple Mail.
    iCal
I successfully imported all my Entourage Calendar items into iCal. This created a "folder" under the "Home" and "Work" folders already in iCal called "Entourage".
However, I would imagine that if I delete anything in Entourage's Calendar, this will also be deleted in the iCal "Entourage" folder.
    *_iCal question_*
How can I move all of the items in iCal, so that they remain there permanently, even if I delete Entourage and its content?
    *_Address Book_*
All address book items in Entourage were synched with Address Book.
    *_Address Book question_*
If I unselect the option to synch Entourage with Address Book, will everything remain in Address Book, or will they be deleted, when I trash the data in Entourage?
    Mail
I have no idea how to import my email accounts and folders (I only have 3 emails in my Inbox - the rest is stored in folders located under the Inbox) currently located in Entourage into Mail.
    *_Mail question_*
Any clues as to how to do that?
Many thanks for your thoughts and responses.

  • Make Entourage default mail program for composing?

Hey folks. I'm trying to get Entourage to be teh default mail program for composing mail as well as reading mail. I already set it to be default for reading mail from the Mail program, bt when I click a "send to" someone type link, Mail keeps popping up. How do I change that? Thanks.

    DrSupachicken,
In Mail Preferences you can set your default mail reader to the preferred application. Which one is curently set as your default? I don't have Entourage installed so I Mail (3.5) is the only option. In your case you should be able to select either Entourage or Mail. Let me know if that helps.

  • Where did my Entourage e-mails go? Help!!

A couple of days ago I exported a couple of thousand Entourage e-mails from one MacBook Pro to a newer one. When I imported, they all showed up in the "Received Today" folder since they were sent that day. But they were not in the inbox or outbox as expected. Now that it is no longer that day, I have no idea where the heck they are at all as they aren't showing in any of the Entourage folders. And, I haven't see anything from the original MacBook's sent folder.
I can find all of these e-mails by using Spotlight though, so they are somewhere
    Help!

You need to copy this (Microsoft User Data) folder from the old computer to the new one. It needs to go in the exact same (Documents) folder on the new computer. It contains your email database where all your emails are stored. After you make the move, emails should all show up when you open Entourage.

Also, once this is done, how can I disable Entourage for mail, synch, etc.
Many thanks for your thoughts and responses.
    Dominique =)

After you sync with Address Book, and you uncheck the Sync in Entourage, they will not be deleted from Address Book.
For email, open Apple Mail, File Menu, Import Mailboxes..., then choose Entourage.
Or you can drag each folder from Entourage onto your drive, which makes a ".mbox" file which is compatible with many different mail programs. You can import those into Apple Mail (or into Thunderbird, or into Outlook Express, etc.).
You can also use a Gmail account, using IMAP (not POP), and drag'n'drop the emails from Entourage into that, then connect to it from Apple Mail and have them back.
Killing off Entourage is harder. Assuming you don't want to uninstall Office, you'll at least need to go to System Prefs, Accounts, and delete the Login Item for the Microsoft Database. I'm not sure what other steps may be necessary.

  • Migrating from Entourage to Mail

I want to move my E-Mail from Entourage to Mail. I'm using a new MacBook Pro with 10.6.1and wondered if there were any tips I need before I start the process.
I'm intending to use the "File/Import Mailboxes" function in Mail
Also - I have a lot of subfolders which will also need transferring to Mail and am a little scared of messing up the process and losing important messages.
Any advice before I make the transfer will be gratefully received.
    Thanks

I had nothing but problems with it.
I got a roughly 15 GB mail database (roughly 100.000 messages) which I am trying to import from Entourage to Mail using 10.6.1. None of my folders with more than roughly 2500 - 3000 messages in them could have been taken over. None of them. When the import reaches somewhere more than 2000 messages in the actual folder, the import stops and just results all the rest of the folders left empty.

  • Seriously considering switching Entourage to Mail. Any switcher advice?

After 7 years of being a power Entourage user (it's the center of my business), I'm considering, for the first time, switching to the Mail/AddressBook/iCal combo. The main reason is the need to be accurately synced between all three of my Mac computers. I just switched all 9 of my email accounts from POP to IMAP, and I'm seeing what a complex thing it is with Entourage. For the first time, a .mac account makes a whole lot of syncin' sense.
I know this is an odd time for considering a move, since Leopard is about to come out (probably with improvements) and the next version of Entourage is scheduled for January. But given that, I'd love to hear from other Entourage-to-Mail switchers, especially those that use sync to keep multiple Macs up-to-date, AND anyone that customizes things with AppleScripts. I have had a dozen customized AppleScripts created for my workflow, and I'm wondering if Mail can be scripted to do similar things. I don't mind hiring an AppleScripter to redo all the scripts, I'm more concerned if Mail can actually do similar things.
Any words of advice from other Entourage-to-Mail switchers? Also: any AppleScripters out there for hire?

The contacts process is almost as easy as Mail.
Go to the Applications folder and open the Applescripts folder.
    Open the Example Scripts folder.
Open the Address Book Scripts folder.
    Choose Import Addresses.scpt
Double click on the script file and click on Run.
Choose Entourage from the menu and import from the Application.
It will launch Entourage and import your contacts.
If Entourage exports label information then Address Book is capable of using that information.
I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "Categories associated with each contact."
Address Book has an Add Field menu choice under the Card menu to customize the categories of information and Edit Template lets you create whatever fields you are likely to need.
If you need to create directories or groups of addresses the file menu has the options.
You can also create Smart Groups.
There is excellent help in the Help menu, as well, to explain these options.
You may need to experiment a little, in order to create the appropriate template for the contact data to be imported into.
There is also information in Help under Importing contacts into Address Book with other ideas around importing and field labels.
You can test by creating new user accounts in system preferences and importing into the Address Book in another user.
This lets you experiment with the import.
It will help you to fine tune a Template and what method to use for the import.
This process is definitely faster than manually entering that many entries.

  • Switched from Entourage to Mail- # of messages shows but no messages!

I thought I successfully imported all the mail from Entourage into Mail but next to the folder is the number of messages but nothing shows up. For instance it says there are 622 Deleted messages but none show up. What did I do wrong? What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks for any help!!! Judy

Fixed it! Duh! Just needed to restart and they were all there. Answered my own topic. Judy

  • Importing from Entourage to Mail Question

    Hi,
I'd like to import from entourage to mail, however I'd like to select a cutoff date of the emails coming in. In other words, instead of 10 years of email, I just want to take the past two or three.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how easily to achieve this end result?
    Thanks

I haven't got a direct answer for you but I had similar experiences which may help you. I found the Mail import to be pretty ineffective and unable to cope with large mailboxes.
I started with Entourage and actually moved to Thunderbird when earlier versions of Mail were not really very good. TBird imported Entourage emails fine - about three years of emails.
With SL and Mail 4, I was looking for a way to import all my TBird emails - now 7 years with as the import into Mail was still flawed and also it had a bad habit of recovering EVERY email ever received, including all the spam. So I found "Eudora mailbox importer" which perfectly moved all my TBird mail straight into Mail with no fuss.
So if you get stuck, its Entourage to TBird to Mail !

I've been using Entourage for the past 6 months but it just slows my machine down and want to convert to Mail. How can I export my Entourage emails to Mail? I found an app to export Mail to Entourage (Mr Mail to Entourage) but not the other way around.

  • Groups from Entourage to Mail

I am desperately wanting to switch from using Entourage to Mail (use Mail at home and much prefer it). The thing is that I have a huge address book in Entourage and the addresses are grouped. How do I export them? just don´t have the time to do them individually. Hope someone can help
    Thanks

    Hi erika,
You should be able to export your contacts from Entourage A/B to your desk top and then drag them straight into Mac A/B.
To make it easy, make sure you have the same groups in Mac A/B that you have in Etour A/B. Then in Etour A/B go to file>export, click on the radio button that says "Items that are in the category:" and choose your category - hit continue. Continue thru the preference choices and save the file (should be a .rge file) to your desktop.
Once saved, just drag that file to your respective/corresponding group in Mac Address book and it should drop right in, giving you a total of the cards/addresses you are importing as confirmation
    Good Luck,
    John
