Goodbye to my old iMac
I am finally going to purchase a new intel iMac and will be getting rid of my old iMac (15 inch CRT display circa 1999, G3 / 333 MHz processor and 192 MB RAM with OS 9.2.2). I will probably donate it to a nearby school. I need to know how to totally erase the hard drive since I have been led to believe that hitting the delete button does not really get rid of material and with appropriate know-how, someone could retrieve files. Obviously, like anyone, I do have personal letter files, etc. which I must be assured are completely gone before I pass this machine on to anyone else. How do I do this? I read that with OS X this can be done relatively easily but with my old operating system I have no idea on how to achieve "total elimination" unless I take a sledge hammer to the machine which I really don't want to do. Thanks for any help.
Apple Discussions!
Actually, you take the sledge hammer to the HD not the computer will do the trick.
However, to answer your question:
Boot from your system install cd while holding down the c key.
Open Drive Set-up & select the HD & then access the Initialization Options from the Functions Menu.
Check the box for "Zero All Data". Click "OK" & then Initialize.
After a good chunk of time, your HD will be wiped cleaned.

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.
Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:

But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon. -
Old imac hard drive crashed... how to put ipod tunes into new imac's itunes
I'm sure this is something that's been revisited a number of times already... My "old" imac (2 years old -- yes I'm ****** but let's not go there) hard drive ceased living. I literally lost everything (had all data backed up, whew!).
Anyway, how can I put my itunes library, which is on my ipod, onto my new itunes on my new imac?
Thanks in advance for your help, CraigYou can't do this using regular Apple software (it's designed to work in one direction only). However if you Google "transfer from ipod to itunes" several helpful links come up with utilities you can download to do this.
But if you have protected music on your iPod, do remember to "authorise"" your new HD first. -

If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network -

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.
You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable. If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it. Time Machine can access it either way.

Apple shows only the 27" version supporting Target Display Mode.

My 5yr old iMac will not connect to the Internet. All other computers at home will, including my Mac Pro and iPad. I'm at my wits end. What should I do?
Which OS are you using (update your user profile).Try a
SMC RESET
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset. -
How can I transfer material from my old imac to a new imac without ransferring malware or viruses?
Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.

I recently had a data migration from old iMac to new iMac 11.2
How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

I'd like to know how can i connect my old iMac tiger with new one iMac lion. I wanna use the old one for external disk to collect files from there to new one.
Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
iTunes 11: Frequently used features
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

Thanks,

Can I hook up New Mac Mini to my old imac?
Can I hook up New Mac Mini to my old imac to share the display? I want to upgrade my iMac since I can not add more memories... but thought may be I can add New Mac Mini and use that along with my old iMac.. Will this work?
If your configuration supports Target Display mode, use that. If not, not without a standalone monitor and a product such as ScreenRecycler.

how do i transfer a cc license from my old desktop iMac to my new one? i use cc on my laptop as well
Hi Rose,
You just have to run one of the CC applications on your old iMac and do a "sign out" (on windows this is in the e.g. Photoshop "Help" menu, can't remember for Mac)...which warns you that you can't use CC apps on that computer anymore.
Then install CC on your new iMac and log in to it. You will then have to use the CC app to install photoshop etc on your new iMac.
