Google Chrome and instability

About two weeks ago I decided to switch from using Firefox (because it was much too piggish with resources) to Chrome. At first, this was wonderful -- Chrome was lightweight and speedy, but starting a few days later all sorts of bad things began happening:
When not using my macbook for an extended period of time, I usually close it, so that it goes to sleep. This never used to cause a problem (though sometimes it would take a while to fully wake up), but since using Chrome it will work fine for a few minutes, and then will either suddenly hangup (the whole system becomes unresponsive, not just Chrome), or will suddenly lose Wifi. If I try to turn Wifi off, it turns off, but then trying to turn it on has no effect, and then the whole system hangs. At that point I have to power cycle the macbook (and always check with Disk Utility verify -- nothing bad is reported).
Starting last night I went back to firefox (which downloaded a new version -- maybe it will fix the piggishness) and will see if the system hangs go away.
I'm running Lion 10.7.4. Has anyway else had problems like these? If so, any resolution?

PS. One of the strangest things about the Wifi problem, is that when the browser loses network connectivity, I have iTunes streaming something to my Apple TV (which clearly has to go over Wifi) without a problem! This makes me think that Chrome is getting its speediness by doing something a bit illegal, and in the process stomps all over something in the system guts.

Unfortunately, current verions of the Chrome browser aren't designed with touch navigation in mind. There is a plugin in known as "ChromeTouch" that improves things a bit:

I've tried it and found it helps somewhat, but still has some problems. Your best bet is to switch to another browser with better touch support.

The figures you mention only make sense on your intranet. Are you still using the same wireless router. The verizon one is somewhat limited as far as max wireless-n performace. For one thing it only has a 2.4 radio. I like many people who wanted wireless-n performance before they even added a wireless-n gigabit router, have my own handling my wireless-n network.

iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C, Fan rpms is around 1000

I have restored this
from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.

There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.

MacBook pro battery drains fast w/ google chrome and Firefox

When I pull up a website with a video, IE YouTube, my activity monitor shows significant usage even with only 1 tab open and the video not even playing (and if it's completely loaded). Google chrome had 2 things at 50% ( google chrome and renderer) AND the shockwave plug-in at 28-30%. Firefox just has the plug-in at around 35-40%. So basically my question is if this is normal and if not then what some remedies are?

Go into FF Preferences & set it to be your default browser. This way when you click on an email link in Chrome, FF will open.

Google Chrome and Firefox won't open any sites. Internet explore can.

Internet Explorer will run any sites. After installing google chrome and firefox its opens the browser but then when i enter a site, any site, it just wont go... It's not giving me an error message... i push the "enter" key and the busy locator, the circle thing that rotates to indicate the page is loading. it just pops for like 1 sec still remains on the main page.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I installed google chrome and added it to my applications folder and it works but my desktop still has the icon of the chrome volume/disk and when i right click it gives an option to eject but it will not delete how can I get rid of it?

Drag it to the trash icon in your dock. This is a disk image, and you need to "eject" it, to get rid of it.

I can open Google Chrome and IE without any problems. My new version of Thunderbird won't let me see messages.

To fix the freezing when sleeping problem go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'Computer Sleep' to 'Never'. It seems there is a problem for some with Bluetooth failing to wake after sleep. This fixes it 100% for me and many others on here, until Apple issue a software update to address it.
Not sure what to suggest on the internet problem. I assume you are connected and receive and send emails OK.
Edit: To try to troubleshoot the internet issue maybe try turning the Firewall off: System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall tab.
