Google disappears on list of search engines on search bar

I used to have Google as the default search engine on Firefox search bar. After Firefox was upgraded to 3.6, I noticed the search bar shows Yahoo as the search engine instead of Google. Google also disappeared from the list of search engine available on the search bar.

See if you can get back the missing search engines if you left-click the search engines icon and open Manage Search Engines and click Restore Defaults
You can try to delete search.sqlite and search.json in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder]
See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_search_or_add_new_engines
You should check your plugins. You have two Flash plugins and two PDF plugins plus a few more plugins that need to be updated.<br />
You can check that via https://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/<br />
# Shockwave Flash 10.1 r53
# Macromedia Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 10.1
# Shockwave Flash 9.0 r28
# Adobe Acrobat Plug-In Version 5.00 for Netscape
# Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape
# Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_18 for Mozilla browsers
You can find the old Flash 9.0 plugin file NPSWF32.DLL in the plugins folder within the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\) and remove that file.
Also remove the flashplayer.xpt file in the components folder.

  • An add-on to force firefox switch back to default search engine in search bar

    Hi,
I have a couple search engines installed in firefox's search bar. I find it extremely annoying that each time I change the search engine it remains like that even after restarting firefox. Is there any add-on that would switch back to the one that is on the top of the list (which happens to be my default search engine for navigation bar as well) every time I restart the browser?
Let me give you an example: I use duckduckgo as a default search engine for the nav bar and in the search bar. Let's say I need to find a definition for which I use wikipedia search engine. I switch to wikipedia one then. I turn off the browser and the next time I start firefox the search engine that appears in the search bar is wikipedia and I would prefer it to be duckduckgo.
I hope it isn't to vague.
    cheers,
    Omen

Easiest is to set the preferred default engine to the preferred search engine via the user.js file in the Firefox profile folder by copying the related user_pref() line to this file.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can search the <b>about:config</b> page for browser.search. to locate the pref(s) that you need.
    *user_pref("browser.search.defaultenginename", "Google");
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
    * Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
    * Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) user.js file in this folder (the names are case sensitive)
    * Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as user.js<br />Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working user.js.txt file

  • How to change what search engine the adress bar uses when typing in a search to something that isn't Google

I currently left all Google services I used, Gmail, Chrome, etc.. because of the recent selling info to the gov and what not and although it may or may not be true I am being safe and switched to Firefox and a different email provider. Anyway so far I like Firefox I am using DuckDuckGo as my current default search and I would like to use it as my search engine when I type in a search in the address bar, by default it's Google how do I change it to a search provider I want to like DuckDuckGo?

    Hello,
If you have installed DuckDuckGo on Firefox, you can follow these steps:
    # Type '''about:config''' in the address bar.
    # A warning appears, click "I'll be careful, I promise!"
    # Type '''browser.search.defaultEngine''' in the search box at the top of the page.
    # Double-click the item that appears.
    # Set the value to '''DuckDuckGo''' or whatever search engine that you would like to use (case sensitive I think).
    (I have attached a screenshot).

  • How to make google default search engine in address bar.

How do I make it so that when I search with my address bar it ALWAYS uses Google, regardless of what search engine is selected in the search bar? It used to be like this, but a recent Firefox update altered it. Now, when I search with my address bar it uses the search engine selected in the search bar...if I wanted to do that, I would just use the search bar! Any suggestions?

I'm also having this same problem... it's the first thing that Firefox has ever done that's made me contemplate getting a different browser. The "update" seems like a step back, and a removal of a very good feature. I'm in the same boat of wondering if there's any work-arounds or add-ons to restore the old usage, even if it comes at the risk of having my address bar's search engine occasionally hijacked.

  • Cant add or change search engines in search bar

When I try to add search engines on the search bar via the Manage Search Engines... option it takes me to:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search-tools/
which is just a list of 5 search addons that have nothing to do with adding search engines to the search bar.
My main problem is the default google that is provided:
    http://www.google.com/firefox
    I want google.com not google.com/firefox

The link to the mycroft site in the post by pelagos restricts the search engines to the UK.
The main entry to the search engine site is: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/
To qualify what you might be seeking, use this link: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html

  • Can not remove yahoo search engine from search bar

I have tried to use the suggestions listed but I am very dense and need a walk through. How do I permenently remove yahoo search from my list of search engines?
I can remove it by manage search engines... but it comes back.

I had the same problem...I searched many forums for answers...Finally this one works.
    Click Start....Click Run...enter this:
    c:\program files\mozilla firefox\searchplugins
A page opens showing all the search engines in firefox.
Simply right click the ones you do not want and delete.
It has been a week now and Google is still my only Search engine

  • How do I change default search engine in address bar?

I know in previous incarnations of Foxfire I could use about:config and change Keyworld.url to change my default search engine. I recently reset my Foxfire because I've been having issues with the Origin website and.. now it's defaulted back to Google. I do not want to use google. How do I change this? I do not want a search bar, I do not wanna change things in a search bar. I just want the address bar to work the way I've always had it work for me before. Can ANYBODY help me?

That does not help me at all. I do not want the Search Bar. I don't wanna change the default on the search bar. Why would ANYONE want a search bar when the address bar does the searching for you?
I want to change the default on the ADDRESS bar. The main bar and only bar I have. The one that if you type in anything, it automatically searches Google and there seems to be no way to change it. You could change it before by going to about:config and changing Keyword.url, but Foxfire removed that. Now.. I want to take the Address bar off it's default of Google and switch it to something else.
Once again, I want NOTHING to do with the Search Bar. I don't want it, don't want to change what it searches, nothing. I never use it and never have. I want to change the ADDRESS bar's default search.

  • Changing search engine box also changes default search engine in URL bar

I just updated to 23.0, and for some reason changing the search engine in the search box also changes the default search engine in the URL bar as well. I'm not sure if this is intended functionality (I hope it isn't), but it is kind of irritating. I wasn't sure if it was related to an addon I installed around the same time, so I tried disabling that, but the problem was still there; therefore, I'm tentatively assuming it has to do with 23.0.

I'd like to cast my (imaginary) vote in opting out of this behaviour. I hate it.
We previously had the option of two search bars. Now it's reduced to one.
The URL bar should be for URLs with default to google for real name searches. That's what makes sense. Not having typos look up YouTube, The PirateBay or whatever you have specced in the Search Bar.
Really, really, stupid change. At least give us the option of restoring the old system.

  • How to add Custom Search Engines to Search Bar

In the past I managed to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' (Windows Version) by just right-clicking that site's own 'search bar' and choosing 'Add to search bar'. I had no third party plugin installed to do this. It was provided by Firefox itself.
Or am I mixing up this feature with Google's 'Add Custom Search Button' ?
Anyhow, is there a way to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' from any website, WITHOUT having to:
    * install an add-on (like: Add to Search Bar 2.0)
    * acquire search engines on 'mycroft.mozdev.org'
    * acquire search engines from 'Manage/Add Search Engines' from the drop-down menu in the search bar ?
    Thanks!

Just made this [http://www.tobtu.com/customsearch.php custom search creator] to do this since I couldn't find one either.
Although I wouldn't trust a stranger so here's the hard way:
Install Apache (lamp/wamp whatever) or get free web hosting from some site.
    blah.html:
    <a onclick="window.external.AddSearchProvider('http://localhost/blah.xml');">blah</a>
    blah.xml:<br />
    <br />
    <pre><nowiki><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <OpenSearchDescription xmlns="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/">
    <ShortName>Blah</ShortName>
    <Description>Blah blah</Description>
    <Image width="16" height="16">data:image/png;base64,BlahBlahBase64AndUriEncoded%2B%2F</Image>
    <Image width="16" height="16">http://blah/OrJustAUrl.png</Image>
    <Url type="text/html" method="get" template="https://blah/?blah={searchTerms}"/>
    </OpenSearchDescription></nowiki></pre>
Now go to http://localhost/blah.html and click the link.

  • How can I find search engines for search bar?

This is actually a suggestion; but, when I tried the suggestion page, it appeared that nothing was happening when I hit the "Submit" button. (Yes, JavaScript was enabled.) Here is what I wrote:
From the search bar drop down "Manage Search Engines" dialogue, there is a link called "Get more search engines." That sends you to addons.mozilla.org, which I find to be almost useless for finding a search engine add-on. Why not send the user to the Mycroft Project, http://mycroft.mozdev.org/? That is vastly more helpful. I tried to find "Google News" at the add-ons site and failed completely. I also tried "Rotten Tomatoes" and got a poor one there. However, at Mycroft, searches for the above two immediately returned good results. I did not know about Mycroft until I complained, on the Firefox forum, about my inability to find Google News.

    This worked for me

Incidentally I have more than 70 Video Tutorials on my site for free, many of them on iWeb so please have a look, as some of them definitely address your question.
It is at http://www.australianmac.com and click on Tutorials on the top of the page. If they do not help then email me from the site and I will make you one that does.

  • Cannot access search engine - maybe "search" is not recognised as a context

    Hello,
I cannot access the search engine
    http://server:port/search
    doest not work.
Maybe it is linked to another problem:
I wanted to make a mapping between a
    context and a directory,
but "additional directory document" does not work.
So I created another Web Application
    (in web-apps.xml)
so maybe search is not recognised as a context.
well I don't know, and I wish someone had this problem and has a clue.
Thank you very much in advance,
    Pascal

    Hello,
first, thanks a lot for answering,
and sorry for the poor description
    - the request to access the search functions of Sun One
    is: http://server:port/search
    - If I define a web app (in web-apps.xml)
    with an empty context
and whose document root is /docroot,
    the request http://server:port/search
    does not work
    error: "file /docroot/search not found"
    - If I define a non empty context for my app
    the request http://server:port/search is OK,
but I will have to make a lot of modifications
    in my app :-(
Do you think there is a way to make Sun One 6 understand
that "/search" is not a subdirectory of
my app even if my app has an empty context?
    Thanks a lot,
    Pascal

  • Why is there no default search engine in search box ?

I have reset Firefox but the searchbox at the top right hand side has no default search engine or any others so I cannot do a search.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 20.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • My prefered(default) search engine, but searches in FF4 return only Yahoo results. How do I fix this?

I installed FF4 this morning, and while I expected addon problems, I did not expect this. All searches return Yahoo results, even though my default SE is google. The google icon still shows in my search bar...I'm confused.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, the-edmeister, thank you! I am in your debt, sir!

  • Desktop search engine: boolean search and highlighting hits

On Windows I had dtSearch to search the desktop (www.dtsearch.com). Is there something similar for Mac OS? I have already tried out several apps. DEVONsphere Express provides boolean search, Insider has preview, but the preview doesn't work with binary files as "DOC" etc.
DtSearch allows sophisticated boolean search and provides a very performing preview with highlighted hits. It works with many types of files, including including Office, different email-applications etc. dtSearch allows also to limit the search on a selection of folders and/or files. Unfortunately, there is apparently no Mac OS Version of dtSearch.

Some of the free or cheap seach apps match with my boolean search needs. None of them hights the hits in a preview. That's my issue: I want to have a preview with highlighted hit. I want to jump from hit to hit with lightening speed.
Now I have found out that DEVONthink Pro Office is a program for Mac which is similar to dtSearch. It costs a bit less, but also about $ 150.
DEVONthink works quite well. Only the boolean NEAR-function has to be improved. "term1 NEAR term2" highlights all the term1 and term2, not only the ones which are close to each other.
