Google Maps Local in Km instead of Miles

When I use Google maps for directions and navigation it properly shows everything in miles but if I use the Local feature to search for a restaurant or attraction the distance is in Km and I see no way of setting it to miles. Has anyone else had this problem? Have you resolved it?

I am in Quincy MA, USA. Using Google maps in the upper left corner there is a pull down menu with options like navigation, local, offers, my places, etc. If I use navigation all my directions are in miles. If I use my places, local, or offers the miles listed to that location from my current location are in metric. But if I then select the location and choose get direction the directions are in U.S. miles again since I am using Navigation. I stopped into the Avon store and the salesperson was stumped.

  • Can i use WebApps to build a Google map with polygon territories instead of points (pins)?

I built a map with Google Maps Engine Pro - http://www.jmbcompanies.com/Services/Mitigation/map.
It showcases territories using a Google map polygon shape.  I wrote custom KML to create it.  However, with Google Maps Engine pro you cannot create custom hyperlinks.  It will link a URL that you put in the data, but you cannot name it or target the parent window, so therefore it opens a new tab for each click to more details.  I really want it to open the WebApp detail page for that item within the same window.
So, is there a way to use the BC integrated Google maps technology and show polygons instead of points on the map? I've used {module_webappsmap,20754,a} to place individual locations on a map, but what about territories or polygon areas?
I'm sure that I can create a WebApp to generate the KML for each placeholder.  But how do I turn that into a map?
    THANKS!!

You can not create a kml file in BC through webapps. Modules do not work in other file types and you do not have server code access to generate a file type of results.
You need to use the google API and do this yourself or you can just use this:
And embed it into a custom field. My Maps

  • Open google maps, youtube, video etc links with app instead of browser?

According to the search maps and youtube won't ask if you want to use an app to open the links because google doesn't see firefox as a mobile browser (which is weird given that it will always load the mobile youtube site...)
But the same thing happens when I want to watch streams from other websites. Instead of asking me if I want to open media files using an app it will automatically use the built in player. But I want to open media with a different player (mx player) as I don't really like the firefox player.
How can I have firefox ask me to pick an app/browser to open certain things like google map links, youtube links, media file link (mp4 etc)?

My biggest bugbear with the Play Store opening in the browser is that it's slower than the native app, so waiting for the page to load before given the option to launch the app isn't a lot of help. Would it be possible to have an option to automatically load such pages in the associated app? Perhaps when using the address bar icon it could ask "Do you want to do this automatically in future? Yes/No/No and don't ask again".

  • I am in nanchang jiangxi china but my local weather and google map is showing unknown location so Plz help me

I am in nanchang jiangxi china but my local weather and google map is showing unknown location so Plz help me

The weather application is powered by "Yahoo". It doesn't have all cities listed in the database and your city is also not listen. Therefore it's not showing your local weather. You can "ADD" a nearby location in the weather application.
For the location problem, turn the location service "OFF" & "ON". Restart your phone (by long pressing the ON & OFF button on top right & slide to tun off). Then use a WIFI connection to run the google map application and locating your position. I hope this will fix the issue.

  • Google maps works locally but not live. not addon problem

Google maps in an iframe seems to get stuck loading.
    Regular google maps ok.
    by locally I mean:
if I load the file with the iframe from the version on my computer, it's ok, but when I put it on my server, it fails to load.
Happens only in firefox. opera/ie/chrome just fine
Tried the usual fixes (safe mode, skype addon, about;config images.default, clear cache, )
For me, the page shows a blank.
    here are sample links...http://contrakyoto.byethost9.com/DirectionsAndWhatToBring.html
    http://www.daniweb.com/web-development/web-design/html-and-css/threads/268779
But in my IDE, I can use the mozilla engine, and I can see the map partially loaded with the "Loading/still having problems" message. I can sometimes see this in FF too. Also, safe mode iwth all addons off also doesnt work.
What is odd, is that if I load the same page LOCALLY...the map works fine.

pasting all that HMTL is not necessary, it is not relevant
here. Make sure you have the FLV, and the FLV's Skin SWF uploaded
    and they are targeted correctly.

  • How can I go back to google maps instead of apple maps?

Apple maps are very very very bad. Is it possible to go back to google maps. I come from Spain and maps doesn't work. Always finds what you are not looking for and what you want does not exist in 75% of searches. You find places and apple maps is not able to give a route. Says that no route available and that's all
The app that comes with the operating system is a disaster.
Any way to go back to google maps???

Download the Google Maps app from the App Store.

  • Google Maps and Skyhook - doesn't work as expected; it works better!

Hello all and thanks for taking the time to read this.
I was under the impression that when you pressed the Locate button in the Google Maps application that the iPod took the MAC address of the WiFi Router it was connected to and then polled Skyhook's database to get the Lat and Long of that router. After this the Maps application would also download appropriate map images to display underneath. This is all well and good however today I noticed that without connecting to any router Maps was able to track my position as I walked down a residential road with only encrypted home WiFi connections available - none of which could actually provide me with an Internet connection. Whilst I can see that the iPod could obtain the MAC address of these routers as I walked past I'm at a loss as to explain how it managed to turn this into the Lat and Long which was being displayed as a blue circle. I know I hadn't connected on a free WiFi connection as the Map images didn't update.
    Does anyone have any explaination?

    Thanks for all the replies.
I went to watch mrs totes play a Netball match on Saturday, somewhere I've never taken the +iPod touch+ before. It could see two encrypted networks and pretty accurately determined my position. As you can see only a certain amount of cached map image data was available. The fact that it still found my position spoiled my only theory that the iPod might cache a local MAC/Lat/Long table.
Here are some images to illustrate:
I guess you are suggesting that it downloads and caches a table of a certain radius when you determine your location and have an Internet connection. Interesting. I'm driving to 40 miles to Bristol tomorrow once I get they I'll see if I can determine my position.
    cheers

P.S. They won 31-16 and mrstotes was 'man' of the match.

  • Google Maps thinks I'm in Seattle WA - why??

Over the past two or three days, whenever I go to use Google Maps, the locator thinks I'm in Seattle. The problem with that - I'm at home in Metro Detroit! Even when I'm outside, with a clear shot at the sky, the GPS doesn't seem to lock in. I just get the .25 mile circle guesstimate of my location - which is always in Seattle as well.
I have turned off my WiFi, thinking that maybe it was pulling up an errant IP Location from a neighbor's WiFi - but still even on 3G Google Maps thinks I'm in Seattle, not Metro Detroit.
Any guesses at why it's doing that?
Is it a hardware issue? Something I should schedule some time with a Genius at the local Apple Store to have them investigate?
I do use the locator a lot when I'm using Google Maps, and I'm hoping to use other GPS location APPS as they become available. So if this is a hardware issue, I need to go get it straightened out to use my iPhone like I want to.

A GPS receiver requires two sets of data with which to determine location in conjunction with the real-time signals received from the satellites. These are known as almanac and ephemeris data. Normally (a non-assisted GPS receiver), these are obtained from the GPS satellites. Worst case, it can take 12-15 minutes for these files to be downloaded from the satellites.
With Assisted-GPS (as found in the 3G), the device will attempt to get a partial set of almanac/ephemeris data from the A-GPS server, based on where the iPhone thinks it is. This data is transmitted to the iPhone over the cellular data connection (3G or EDGE), or a WiFi connection, whichever is available. If your nearby AT&T cell tower is not correctly identified (bug in the tower CellID info, or an error in the A-GPS server), the iPhone will be given bad ephemeris data. It will then calculate its location based on signals from the GPS satellites and the faulty ephemeris data. That could explain why Detroit becomes Seattle.
Based on what's been reported in the many discussion threads concerning broken GPS, it appears that once the iPhone has obtained (faulty) assist data from the A-GPS server, it doesn't bother to keep listening to the data broadcast from the sky so it never receives correct ephemeris/almanac data.
Like many others, my 3G lost its GPS function after the update to v2.1. I eventually got it working by removing SIM card (so as to disable EDGE and 3G data), turned off WiFi and went outside for 20 minutes. Eventually, the GPS locking in to my location, with the pulsing blue dot. With no A-GPS server to fall back on, I surmise that the GPS receiver had downloaded the almanac/ephemeris data, and was thus able to obtain an accurate GPS location. Then I put the SIM card back in. My Location Services has been working fine since.
@MobileDev - it would be helpful if you could take your "Seattle-based" 3G outside (in clear view of sky) and wait a while to see if it eventually obtains the sky data and realizes that it is really in Detroit. That would confirm if this hypothesis is correct.

  • Google maps does not work

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my Macbook Pro. No matter which browser I use, Google maps will not render the map detail - instead it just shows the target location with a letter 'A' or whatever, but the background map is just grey with no features. It  makes no difference how long I wait either. I have used the various features in browsers to clear out the 'junk' and have used 'reset safari' when in that browser, Still no joy. I have had the MBP for two years and I expect this simple feature to work as it does on all my Windows PC's and iPhone. I am at my wits end and feel somewhat duped into the Apple world by the triumph of 'form' over function. I want to love my MAC but it aggravates me instead because I spend too much time trying to figure out how to get basic features working when in fact they should work first time without user intervention.
Has anyone got a 5 minute fix for this ridiculous fault please? I cannot upload a screen grab either because (1) this Apple forum wont allow upload of my screengrabbed jpgs of tiffs, or (2) my MBP wont allow it (despite them being within the expected size limit). Another spectacular own goal by Apple.

Have you tried a PRAM and an SMC reset? They're longshots, but don't take long to try.
    PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Have you run Apple Diagnostics from the disc(s) that shipped with the computer?
Since the problem occurs in all browsers, it still sounds like a video hardware or video RAM or maybe a software issue having to do with layers and rendering.
The map layers aren't getting rendered, or if rendered, aren't getting displayed.
Do you have any browser add-ins? Pop-up blockers?
Since you have two video chipsets, it's possible that might be related to the issue.
This non-Apple website talks about switching between chipsets on the various MacBook models so equipped, and points to a free 'donationware' program for the menubar that lets you easily switch between chipsets:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-unibody-faq/macboo k-pro-unibody-switching-between-graphics-processors.html
Trying to think of other software that might help pinpoint the problem, does the iPhoto Slideshow 'Shatter' template work? Working properly, it 'shatters' images into several color layers and rotates them in and out to build and deconstruct photos.

  • Phone numbers are not showing up on craigslist and google maps is not working.

I uploaded the 3.6 version of firefox and although learning a new look and figuring out what changes had been made were doing ok then the other night the power went out it shut the comp down and when my husband started it back up it had him update it again now my first page when I open it shows yahoo instead of ask, and when I use fire fox to open craigslist lots of the post do not have phone numbers showing up on them that does show up if I use internet explorer to view CL. Also, It will bring up google maps but when I put a location in the box to see it on the map and hit the search button it only starts to load the page with the little word loading... in the center above the location search box but then it says it's done. This also does not happen when I use IE. We tried to restore to a previous date (which there were only a couple to choose from, don't know where the rest of them went) but once the comp restarted itself after supposedly restoring it comes up and says it was not able to restore it properly. I did not have any of these problems with the first update to 3.6 but I think the update that was just loaded 3.6.11 or something like that has really messed something up or it's just not right some how.

Issues with phone numbers not displaying properly can be caused by the Skype extension (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

On the left hand corner you will see list of views in the report, on a basic analysis you will see title and table view. Select the table view and click on edit ( pencil symbol ). A new page opens up, scroll down a little and you will see the columns included and columns excluded sections. Make sure the column that you are trying to add to the report is not present in the excluded list. If it is, drag and drop it above.
Answer points if question is answered.

  • Google Maps no longer works with my S4

Ever since I bought my S4 a few months ago I have had problems with Google Maps keeping the satellite signal, but after installing the latest software upgrade on 12/11/2014 (NG6 to NK1) it has become useless.  When I open Maps it will usually find my location and give me directions to where I want to go, but as soon as I tap "Start Navigation" it becomes totally worthless.  If it can find a signal at all, then it will take me the wrong and longer way out of my neighborhood.  But more often it just stops working and I get the dreaded "Satellite Signal Lost" message.  I have cleared the cache, done a Force Stop and uninstalled/reinstalled the app...all to no avail.  This is really frustrating because I have over the past years relied on my phone's navigation more than my Garmin because it is/was usually more accurate.  I also see from other forums/discussions that I am not the only person having this problem.  Is there anything anyone can suggest to fix the problem?

I have turned off the app, cleared all data and the cache, restarted the phone, and turned the app back on, and it still did not work.  Then I went to the Google Play Store and uninstalled the app from there, since there is not an option to uninstall from the app settings.  I then restarted the phone and reinstalled the app from the Play Store.  I then updated it.  I tried it going to my local Walmart and was pleasantly surprised, at first, that it now showed the correct directions out of my neighborhood...where before it had been showing the wrong and longer way out.  It held the GPS signal and gave me turn-by-turn directions to Walmart, and I was thrilled.  Then on the return trip I was right back to square one...as soon as the car started to move the directions stopped and I heard "GPS signal lost" all the way home with it never getting a signal the whole way.

  • Google maps turn by turn directions no longer interrupts iTunes music player in iOS7

I often use Google Maps app when I travel while simultaneously listening to music. I have my iPhone connected to my car stereo via the Lightning port. In iOS6, when Google would give turn by turn directions the music volume would duck and the voice guided navigation would play through the car stereo. After updating to iOS7, this feature no longer works. With both iTunes and Google Maps open, the music volume is always dimmed and voice guided navigation is always off.
I do not notice this issue with Apple's Maps app. So far it appears to work properly and I am using this as a work around. However there are several reasons I favor Google Maps as a superior solution for the moment. For example, if I ask for directions to a specific location such as a local business Google is able to provide this information 90% of the time. By comparison, the same query with Siri usually results in having to search the web for an address first and then having to go back and ask for directions to that specific street address. It is a minor inconvenience, but it is enough of a hassle that I tend to stick with the better content of Google Maps for now.
Perhaps this bug is iOS7 related or perhaps the issue is with the Google Maps app. Either way, I am reporting because I'd love to see it fixed. I have noticed several bugs (this being one of many that I am reporting) since upgrading to iOS7 which has been very disappointing. I am a huge Apple advocate and this has not been the experience of "It just works" that I have come to expect from my Apple products. It is because I care so much about the Apple ecosystem that has made my work and play so much more enjoyable that I will take the time to report these in hopes that Apple will take notice and that subsequent updates will address these issues.

I never did. Partly I believe it's the interaction with my car's bluetooth connection and instructions it sends the phone when they connect. It seems like if I actively QUIT all applications that could play audio (SiriusXM, Podcasts, Music), then I can get the directions without any music. (That said, the SiriusXM app doesn't always play nice. If any of these are open, not even playing, then they start up when I select bluetooth audio on my car stereo. But I still can't tell the audio to stop without it muting either Google Maps or Apple's Maps. They both behave the same way.

  • Battery drain with ios6   apps crashing!   google maps app is gone. The Apple version is like asking a blind man for directions! Awful. As consumers we are caught up in the squabbles between Apple and Google, and we pay the price.

Does anyone else have battery life problems with the iOS6 update? Some of my other apps crash constantly, bringing my reading or workflow back to the home screen. The new map App is a disaster! Is there an online petition to have Apple bring back the Google map app? It is like asking a blind man for driections! Addresses, postal codes, locations, area codes and phone numbers in the Vancouver BC area are consistently wrong! AUUUUUGGGHHHHHHH!

As someone who spends a lot of time writing reviews (for vidya gaems ;P) I enjoyed your review. I am also looking at getting a new phone soon (I am saving up to buy out on refresh). I was considering th next iPhone but from reading your review I may consider this device instead. What I need to know is this. When the phone is in a phone holder which you have in a car for example does the screen get pressed at the sides? I don't wan't to open up Waze put my phone in a holder and it get cancelled out by what it thinks is a button press. Also, is the screen goign to be scratched easy? I am guessing there is no decent screen guards yet. I did buy some screen protection liquid that was recommended on these forums and my lumia still got scratched by about an inch or so.

  • Create .kml based google map in iWeb

Using iWeb 08, I can easily and successfully insert google maps into my pages using the web widget. I am then limited to an address though for the base map.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to insert a google earth based .kml file in iWeb so that when a user opens the page, the desired placemarks etc... are displayed and available?
If so, how might I go about accomplishing this?
any pointers are very much appreciated!

Don't use iweb2 google map widget.
Instead, go to google map, enter the GPS coordinates, then add it using HTML Snippet. See this thread:
