Google Maps on Mac

This isn't necessarily a Safari problem, as it also happens on Firefox, but its definitely a problem that is exclusive to my machine.
Whenever I view a Google map, various tiles are missing. so I'll only get half of the image. On the same network, my wifes Mac can view the same pages (with embedded maps) fine. The maps load first time every time.
I have dropped the MTU on the router down to 1400. Emptied the cache on Safari. But still with no joy. Not on private browsing and pop ups are allowed.
Anyone had this happen to them and subsequently found a solution?

Bad news. The problem is back, and I can't fix it.
I've just upgraded to iLife 09. Places in iPhoto is a nightmare. Been working fine for most of the evening, now its gone doo lally again.
Tried, Checking Java config (with my wife's Mac, which works fine) all settings identical.
Repairing disk permissions.
Reinstalling Flash
Reinstalling Java
Rebooting machine. Still the problem persists. Some tiles are missing and this varies depending on the zoom level. Absolutely infuriating. Problem exists in Safari, Firefox AND NOW iphoto 09!?
Grrr, driving me insane.

  • Google Map Phone vs. Mac

My experience is that often (but not always) the iphone Maps demands more detail to get "Directions" than the Google Maps on a Mac or PC interface. For example, on Mac the Maps will find the directions using "Blythe, CA" for the start and "Cracker Barrel TEmpe AZ" for the destination. On the iphone Maps this returns "Driving directions could not be found between these locations." For this reason also a Google Map Driving Directions link in an e-mail will not open automatically in iphone Maps.
I would have thought that Google being the Map host and the phone requiring at least as much flexibility as setting at a desktop.
Is there something I can do to be smarter with my searches, or just live with it?
    Thanks much

Thanks for the helpful feedback. I've extended a text box to leave a little room below the map.
My Firefox still fails to display the map. I've just reinstalled it from a freshly downloaded DMG file of 2.0.0.6. And I've trashed the only prefs file I could find. (There must be other config files somewhere else, because after I trashed the prefs Firefox still remembered my home page etc.).
I have no idea what's wrong with my Firefox, but it's good to know that it works for other people.

  • Google maps does not work

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my Macbook Pro. No matter which browser I use, Google maps will not render the map detail - instead it just shows the target location with a letter 'A' or whatever, but the background map is just grey with no features. It  makes no difference how long I wait either. I have used the various features in browsers to clear out the 'junk' and have used 'reset safari' when in that browser, Still no joy. I have had the MBP for two years and I expect this simple feature to work as it does on all my Windows PC's and iPhone. I am at my wits end and feel somewhat duped into the Apple world by the triumph of 'form' over function. I want to love my MAC but it aggravates me instead because I spend too much time trying to figure out how to get basic features working when in fact they should work first time without user intervention.
Has anyone got a 5 minute fix for this ridiculous fault please? I cannot upload a screen grab either because (1) this Apple forum wont allow upload of my screengrabbed jpgs of tiffs, or (2) my MBP wont allow it (despite them being within the expected size limit). Another spectacular own goal by Apple.

Have you tried a PRAM and an SMC reset? They're longshots, but don't take long to try.
    PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Have you run Apple Diagnostics from the disc(s) that shipped with the computer?
Since the problem occurs in all browsers, it still sounds like a video hardware or video RAM or maybe a software issue having to do with layers and rendering.
The map layers aren't getting rendered, or if rendered, aren't getting displayed.
Do you have any browser add-ins? Pop-up blockers?
Since you have two video chipsets, it's possible that might be related to the issue.
This non-Apple website talks about switching between chipsets on the various MacBook models so equipped, and points to a free 'donationware' program for the menubar that lets you easily switch between chipsets:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-unibody-faq/macboo k-pro-unibody-switching-between-graphics-processors.html
Trying to think of other software that might help pinpoint the problem, does the iPhoto Slideshow 'Shatter' template work? Working properly, it 'shatters' images into several color layers and rotates them in and out to build and deconstruct photos.

  • Safari and Google Maps are useless

Safari and Google Maps invariably quit and return to the home screen. They are essentially useless. I tried to empty the cache and history...no luck. I then tried a reset and when it restarted got a message to please connect to iTunes. iTunes told me my phone needed to be restored. A progress bar indicated it was extracting some software and then it was preparing the iPhone for restoration. After some time I got an unknown error message (1603) that said it was unable to restore. I am looking at it as it sits uselessly in the dock with nothing but the apple icon showing. Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have a solution? Should I just return it to the Apple Store.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

James, I'm sorry to say buddy, but you might just have a defective product. If restoring doesn't work there really isn't much more you could do. You can ether wait for the next update, and hope that would fix it, or just take it back to the store and exchange it. You have 30 days from the day of purchase to return the item. Thats my recommendation. GL

  • Looking for a kind of Google Maps plugin

    Hi everybody,
I saw lot of tutorials about HoudahGeos Google Maps integration with Lightroom for Mac users. And i'm looking, for a while, to the same functionality for PC users. I do not own a camera with builtin GPS support or even an external tracking unit, but I'd like to drop a pin on the location of some photo I take.
Does anyone have a solution ?
    Thx

One particularly good thing about HoudahGeo is that it can identify folders and collections in Lightroom and list their contents. This is a handy addition to standard File Open or drag and drop ways to get the files. As a note, it seems better to use HoudahGeo with Google Earth, rather than Google Maps, as you then have the ability to search for locations.
I'd also recommend Geosetter for Windows. I feel it's actually the better of the two programs. One caution is to be careful about the order in which you do work in LR, and read in the GPS data. If there are LR adjustments, Metadata > Read from File can overwrite them - after all, that's what you're telling LR to do. So make sure that you run Metadata > Save to File first.

  • Google Maps and Skyhook - doesn't work as expected; it works better!

Hello all and thanks for taking the time to read this.
I was under the impression that when you pressed the Locate button in the Google Maps application that the iPod took the MAC address of the WiFi Router it was connected to and then polled Skyhook's database to get the Lat and Long of that router. After this the Maps application would also download appropriate map images to display underneath. This is all well and good however today I noticed that without connecting to any router Maps was able to track my position as I walked down a residential road with only encrypted home WiFi connections available - none of which could actually provide me with an Internet connection. Whilst I can see that the iPod could obtain the MAC address of these routers as I walked past I'm at a loss as to explain how it managed to turn this into the Lat and Long which was being displayed as a blue circle. I know I hadn't connected on a free WiFi connection as the Map images didn't update.
    Does anyone have any explaination?
    VMT
    mrtotes

    Thanks for all the replies.
I went to watch mrs totes play a Netball match on Saturday, somewhere I've never taken the +iPod touch+ before. It could see two encrypted networks and pretty accurately determined my position. As you can see only a certain amount of cached map image data was available. The fact that it still found my position spoiled my only theory that the iPod might cache a local MAC/Lat/Long table.
Here are some images to illustrate:
I guess you are suggesting that it downloads and caches a table of a certain radius when you determine your location and have an Internet connection. Interesting. I'm driving to 40 miles to Bristol tomorrow once I get they I'll see if I can determine my position.
    cheers
    mrtotes
P.S. They won 31-16 and mrstotes was 'man' of the match.

  • Google maps street-level view works in Safari but not Firefox 3.6.8

I've lost the ability to see street-level views in Google Maps, probably in the last couple of months, and suspect Firefox.

Perfect! Thanks cor-el: Good instructions. It was the add-on extension FlashBlock, which makes some sense, in that what wasn't happening with the street-level feature was that I wasn't getting the image of the street. Cannot now reconstruct what led me to <https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes>, but your instructions got me there, and following the trouble-shooting steps narrowed down the problem, the way one used to have to do with Mac extension, identify the culprit by process of elimination and going first for those that might make sense, as FlashBlock did to me, whether for the right or wrong reason.

When I attempt to open google maps in Firefox on my Imac, a dark screens descends over my monitor screen and a note tells me there's been an error, no number is noted, and that I need to turn off and restart my computer.  This doesn't help, but everything else works, including google maps in other browsers.

    This is a kernel panic.
First verify that Firefox is fully updated including all extensions.
    If this fails to fix....
Restart in Safe Boot mode then open Firefox.

    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears

  • How to get digital signature for Google Map geocoding V3 in PL/SQL?

    Hi, Gurus:
Could anyone provide me an example about how to generate digital signature for Google Maps service v3 in PL/SQL? We tried to upgrade our program using Google maps service from v2 to v3. We are using PL/SQl on background to send request to Google for geocoding. We found some sample code to register with digital signature, but none of them is based on PL/SQl. Notice I used Google business client ID "gme-XXX" and wallet.

Here is my code for V2. I notice in order to get signature, I need to use HMAC-SHA1 algorithm.

  • View pinpoint-information of a Google Map in a UIWebView

    Hello,
I'm building an application with a webview of a Google Map with loads of pinpoints. Those pinpoints are already placed on the map, and the map is succesfully embeded in my website.
When I click on a pinpoint in my Safari 'for Mac', I see the information of the pinpoint. When opening my application on my iPhone and start clicking on pinpoints... nothing happens.
Is there a solution for this problem?

I did another test and something seems to have changed since I had trouble with my app. If I place a href for [this URL|http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=1093915278307402071 25.0004463abd2c899f08839&z=14] into a WebView and tap the link to load it the pins work in the WebView!
